statement that was far superior to the other attorneys. 00:00:49.840 --> 00:00:59.520 In Romans chapter 2, Paul has been making a case against the religious, moralistic Jewish people. 00:01:00.140 --> 00:01:04.920 You know, those that look down on the Gentiles that Paul listed in Romans chapter 1. 00:01:04.920 --> 00:01:13.540 So he's making this argument, making this case, and we come to verse 25 through verse 29. 00:01:14.299 --> 00:01:21.760 And this is Paul's closing argument for the case that he's making against the religious leaders. 00:01:21.760 --> 00:01:31.439 So Paul, by the leading of the Holy Spirit, leaves no room for any religious, moralistic person to boast. 00:01:31.900 --> 00:01:34.540 He has removed what they trusted in. 00:01:35.380 --> 00:01:44.439 And what they found their security in, which was their heritage, them being Jewish, their bloodline, being God's chosen people. 00:01:44.439 --> 00:01:51.519 And based on Romans chapter 2, they can also no longer trust in their actions. 00:01:51.719 --> 00:01:53.560 In fact, Paul called them hypocrites. 00:01:54.299 --> 00:01:59.060 They can no longer trust in being better than others, because Paul is making a case that, 00:01:59.439 --> 00:02:03.500 though you may not be Gentiles like Romans chapter 1, you still are just as guilty. 00:02:06.859 --> 00:02:12.280 They can't trust in their security of knowing and having knowledge of the law. 00:02:12.280 --> 00:02:21.900 And this morning, Paul attacks their religious activities or ceremony mainly by discussing circumcision. 00:02:22.780 --> 00:02:25.400 So to turn there. 00:04:33.779 --> 00:04:44.279 Genesis 17, God has just finished reminding Abraham of the new covenant that he made with Abraham. 00:04:44.679 --> 00:04:47.639 That he changes his name from Abram to Abraham. 00:04:48.539 --> 00:04:52.939 And he says, you're going to be father to many, many generations. 00:04:53.099 --> 00:04:55.319 I'm going to bless you through your bloodline. 00:04:55.319 --> 00:05:08.480 So, Genesis chapter 17, starting in verse 9, we have circumcision for the first time. 00:05:08.480 --> 00:05:16.459 And God said to Abraham, as for you, you shall keep my covenant, you and your offspring, after you throughout their generations. 00:05:16.920 --> 00:05:21.480 This is my covenant which you shall keep between me and you and your offspring after you. 00:05:22.139 --> 00:05:24.339 Every male among you shall be circumcised. 00:05:24.339 --> 00:05:31.339 You shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskins, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and you. 00:05:32.939 --> 00:05:39.419 Circumcision was a ceremony meant to remind the people of the covenant made between God and Abraham. 00:05:40.479 --> 00:05:45.859 It was a reminder of the promise that God made to bless generation after generation. 00:05:46.919 --> 00:05:49.159 That Abraham would be the father to many. 00:05:49.620 --> 00:05:54.319 It was also a way that God was setting apart the people of Israel. 00:05:55.299 --> 00:06:02.079 It was a way that even the Jewish people knew that they were Jewish. 00:06:02.679 --> 00:06:07.399 And they setting them apart from was a reminder of the covenant that had been made and the covenant to come. 00:06:31.000 --> 00:06:34.960 A Savior would come and cleanse them from all their unrighteousness. 00:06:34.959 --> 00:07:45.379 It is important because though we don't have ceremonies of circumcision. 00:07:45.379 --> 00:07:48.600 We in this room have ceremonies of baptism. 00:07:50.219 --> 00:07:55.180 Both are an outward expression of what God has done on the inside. 00:07:55.279 --> 00:07:58.519 Or at least that's what God intended them to be. 00:08:00.159 --> 00:08:03.639 And that is where Paul is leading us in the text this morning. 00:08:04.560 --> 00:08:06.159 There are three points this morning. 00:08:06.259 --> 00:08:13.319 The first being that circumcision or any religious activity in Christianity is valuable and is worthless. 00:08:13.319 --> 00:08:15.740 It is valuable and it is worthless. 00:08:15.879 --> 00:08:19.300 The second being that circumcision is not just for the Jews. 00:08:20.420 --> 00:08:22.680 And the third, circumcision is a matter of the heart. 00:08:23.099 --> 00:08:25.899 Now I'm sorry I didn't get very creative with these three points. 00:08:26.019 --> 00:08:27.100 There's no wordsmithing. 00:08:27.159 --> 00:08:28.319 It's straight from the text. 00:08:29.500 --> 00:08:30.719 So let's go. 00:08:30.920 --> 00:08:31.680 First point. 00:08:31.980 --> 00:08:39.439 Circumcision or any religious activity in Christianity or Christendom is valuable and worthless. 00:08:39.440 --> 00:08:42.480 Verse 25 says, 00:08:42.800 --> 00:08:47.280 For circumcision indeed is of value if you obey the law. 00:08:47.960 --> 00:08:53.160 But if you break the law, your circumcision becomes uncircumcision. 00:08:53.820 --> 00:08:58.600 The value in being 00:09:27.500 Because not only has Paul questioned the value of this religious activity of circumcision. 00:09:28.379 --> 00:09:31.740 He has also said that it has no worth. 00:09:32.219 --> 00:09:33.099 It's worthless. 00:09:33.659 --> 00:09:37.679 Like the Gentiles who they thought were worthless dogs. 00:09:38.479 --> 00:09:40.339 If they cannot obey the law. 00:09:40.340 --> 00:09:52.280 So what religious life they have made with self-effort and self-determination is now being destroyed by Paul's letter. 00:09:52.960 --> 00:09:54.879 And for us, by the word of God. 00:09:56.000 --> 00:09:58.500 But this shouldn't surprise us at all. 00:09:59.680 --> 00:10:01.780 Especially up to this point in Romans. 00:10:02.340 --> 00:10:08.660 Paul has destroyed any ability for a religious person to trust in any of their action. 00:10:08.659 --> 00:10:15.579 He's destroyed any ability to trust in our own action that is not around Christ. 00:10:15.659 --> 00:10:19.679 That is not founded in the act and action of God through Christ. 00:10:20.459 --> 00:10:22.100 See, this is what the gospel does. 00:10:22.899 --> 00:10:28.620 It tears apart and destroys any ability of yours or mine to boast in. 00:10:29.000 --> 00:10:35.620 It destroys any ability for you or my own righteousness to make a difference. 00:10:35.620 --> 00:10:42.279 Because the gospel is completely 100% dependent on the work of Christ. 00:10:43.820 --> 00:10:57.560 So what Paul is saying here to us is that our religious activities, our baptism, our singing the songs, if you keep the law, are good. 00:10:57.559 --> 00:10:59.699 But if you don't, it is worthless. 00:11:00.459 --> 00:11:08.979 In other words, it is worthless unless it is a direct result of Jesus Christ in your life by which we obey the law. 00:11:10.219 --> 00:11:14.000 See, the gospel leaves no room for you and I to boast. 00:11:14.779 --> 00:11:15.199 None. 00:11:15.839 --> 00:11:18.199 It is a very one-sided action. 00:11:19.379 --> 00:11:22.879 We respond to the gospel, but after God has revealed himself to us. 00:11:22.879 --> 00:11:26.360 We can't even boast in our own religious activities. 00:11:26.639 --> 00:11:28.759 That's the point of Romans chapter 2. 00:11:30.019 --> 00:11:33.559 We cannot boast in anything we do except in Christ. 00:11:33.559 --> 00:11:45.059 And it is Christ who allows us or that, in verse 26 and 27, circumcision is not just for the Jews. 00:11:57.279 --> 00:12:07.480 Now, we're just progressing through the text here, so when we get to the conclusion of verse 29, you'll see that Paul kind of flips everything upside down. 00:12:08.500 --> 00:12:12.439 Verse 26 and 27, circumcision is not just for the Jews. 00:12:14.279 --> 00:12:18.759 Now, originally, circumcision was one of the ways that God set apart the people of Israel. 00:12:19.319 --> 00:12:19.579 Okay? 00:12:19.580 --> 00:12:25.480 But now Paul is saying to all of us that circumcision is no longer just for the Jews. 00:12:26.720 --> 00:12:30.240 So being set apart is not just for the Jews now. 00:12:31.900 --> 00:12:32.920 Verse 26. 00:12:33.920 --> 00:12:43.180 So if a man who is uncircumcised, meaning a Gentile, keeps the precepts of the law, will not his uncircumcision be regarded as circumcision? 00:12:43.179 --> 00:12:54.399 Then he who is physically uncircumcised, but keeps the law, 00:13:25.279 --> 00:13:26.799 It has nothing to do with us. 00:13:26.859 --> 00:13:31.659 And becoming a Christian is all about Jesus Christ and His call on a life. 00:13:32.919 --> 00:13:38.679 Paul again shakes up the religious Jewish people because they thought that they were the elect. 00:13:38.859 --> 00:13:41.039 They thought that they were God's chosen people. 00:13:41.039 --> 00:13:44.539 Now, for the time they were, but they were representing the spiritual church. 00:13:44.599 --> 00:13:47.379 They were representing God and Christ's church. 00:13:47.379 --> 00:13:54.340 They thought being members of this elite club was an eternal membership. 00:13:54.340 --> 00:13:57.960 They thought that they were part of this elite club in town. 00:13:57.960 --> 00:14:02.660 And like any club, they had control of who was going to be the members and who was not. 00:14:02.820 --> 00:14:07.240 They thought that they were going to be able to send out the invitations and invite who they wanted --> 00:14:53.360 It says, but whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. 00:14:53.860 --> 00:15:00.159 Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus as Lord. 00:15:01.620 --> 00:15:05.179 So we're not sidetracking here. 00:15:05.240 --> 00:15:06.059 We're not chasing rabbits. 00:15:06.159 --> 00:15:08.159 This has to do with our to zeal, a persecutor of the church, as to righteousness under the law, blameless. 00:15:33.240 --> 00:15:38.019 So all of that, Paul says, it was gain. 00:15:38.480 --> 00:15:41.120 But I count all of that as loss. 00:15:43.100 --> 00:15:44.699 And why is all that gain? 00:15:44.700 --> 00:15:46.400 Why does he count all that as gain? 00:15:46.460 --> 00:15:49.500 Because being God's chosen has --> 00:16:16.299 the Gentiles, 00:16:16.299 --> 00:16:17.699 but keeps the law, 00:16:18.220 --> 00:16:20.459 will condemn you who have the written code. 00:16:20.799 --> 00:16:21.740 They will
