novel. 00:01:17.259 --> 00:01:19.719 The word literally means 50th. 00:01:19.719 --> 00:01:25.719 It was the 50th day after the Passover. 00:01:28.299 --> 00:01:29.879 It was called by various names. 00:01:30.879 --> 00:01:33.319 And each of these names is important for you and I to understand. 00:01:34.719 --> 00:01:36.920 And what I want to do is I want us to kind of click on this link 00:02:02.700 --> 00:02:05.400 A week of weeks is 49 days. 00:02:05.400 --> 00:02:09.140 And the next day after a week of weeks is the 50th day. 00:02:09.960 --> 00:02:11.200 The Pentecostal day. 00:02:12.400 --> 00:02:14.159 The 50th day from the Passover. 00:02:15.840 --> 00:02:19.379 And what its significance is that the Feast of Pentecost 00:02:19.379 --> 00:02:23.460 and the Feast of the Passover are both linked together. 00:02:24.920 --> 00:02:27.520 You might be thinking, well, what on earth is the Passover? 00:02:28.780 --> 00:02:32.080 It's that moment where in Israel's history, 00:02:32.080 --> 00:02:35.580 they celebrated their redemption, their escape from Egypt. 00:02:36.640 --> 00:02:39.600 If you know the story, there was the shed blood of a lamb. 00:02:40.680 --> 00:02:45.800 It was put on the doorpost of where every one of the people of Israel was. 00:02:47.100 --> 00:02:49.880 And the Passover celebrated that great event 00:02:49.880 --> 00:02:52.040 where the angel of death passed over them 00:02:52.040 --> 00:02:54.260 and they came out of the land of Egypt. 00:02:56.000 --> 00:02:59.140 And so in Israel's history, every Jew, they got together 00:02:59.140 --> 00:03:01.000 to celebrate their redemption. 00:03:01.000 --> 00:03:05.759 And Pentecost came 50 days after this most notable day 00:03:05.759 --> 00:03:07.219 in the history of God's people. 00:03:09.319 --> 00:03:13.620 But the day of Pentecost that we've just read in Acts 2 and verse 1 00:03:13.620 --> 00:03:17.039 comes 50 days, doesn't it, 00:03:18.080 --> 00:03:20.659 after the most notable event in the history of the world. 00:03:22.099 --> 00:03:26.439 The offering up of not a lamb of God, 00:03:26.520 --> 00:03:28.920 but the lamb of God, the sacrificial lamb of God, 00:03:28.920 --> 00:03:30.159 who was the Lord Jesus Christ. 00:03:31.000 --> 00:03:35.819 And it's in his offering up of himself on the cross, 00:03:36.259 --> 00:03:37.379 dying in our place, 00:03:37.639 --> 00:03:39.139 and then rising from the dead, 00:03:39.180 --> 00:03:42.240 that the New Testament sees the fulfilment of the Passover. 00:03:42.240 --> 00:03:46.920 And so Jesus is the Christ, 00:03:46.920 --> 00:03:49.400 our Passover lamb, sacrificed for us. 00:03:49.620 --> 00:03:51.340 Therefore we keep the feast, they say. 00:03:52.680 --> 00:03:55.439 50 days after this celebration 00:03:55.439 --> 00:03:57.920 came this day of Pentecost. 00:03:59.180 --> 00:04:01.719 And that's of great significance for you and I 00:04:01.719 --> 00:04:06.979 because you cannot celebrate Pentecost from the Passover. 00:04:06.979 --> 00:04:12.859 And you cannot understand the significance of Pentecost 00:04:12.859 --> 00:04:18.560 apart from the offering up of Jesus as our sacrifice for our sins 00:04:18.560 --> 00:04:21.459 in order that he might gain for us 00:04:21.459 --> 00:04:24.819 all the benefits and blessings of our salvation. 00:04:24.819 --> 00:04:28.500 And so the day of Pentecost, what I'm saying to you, 00:04:28.819 --> 00:04:31.839 cannot be separated from the work of the Lord Jesus. 00:04:32.639 --> 00:04:35.360 It is in many ways the great climax. 00:04:35.360 --> 00:04:39.639 where the coming of God's Holy Spirit 00:04:39.639 --> 00:04:42.580 is to accomplish in God's people 00:04:42.580 --> 00:04:46.340 what the death of Jesus has accomplished for them. 00:04:48.240 --> 00:04:52.199 The coming of the Holy Spirit was to accomplish in God's people 00:04:52.199 --> 00:04:55.800 what the death of Jesus has accomplished for them. 00:04:55.800 --> 00:04:58.060 And this is the great link, 00:04:58.120 --> 00:05:01.400 the great link between Christ offering himself as our Passover 00:05:01.400 --> 00:05:04.900 and the day of Pentecost where the Holy Spirit comes in power. 00:05:06.139 --> 00:05:08.879 What Jesus had accomplished for us, 00:05:09.660 --> 00:05:12.199 the Holy Spirit comes to apply to us 00:05:12.199 --> 00:05:14.660 and accomplish in us. 00:05:17.180 --> 00:05:20.040 It is not sufficient, according to the teaching of the Bible, 00:05:20.040 --> 00:05:26.140 that Jesus, he accomplishes something for let me read to you from John 14 and 16. 00:05:51.920 --> 00:05:52.439 Jesus says, 00:05:52.520 --> 00:05:53.540 I will ask the Father 00:05:53.540 --> 00:05:56.520 and he will give you another helper to be with you forever, 00:05:57.520 --> 00:05:58.939 even the Spirit of truth, 00:05:59.600 --> 00:06:00.980 whom the world cannot receive 00:06:00.980 --> 00:06:02.640 because it neither sees him
