wanted to take a moment this Sunday to look back into the Old Testament Scriptures. 00:00:15.860 --> 00:00:21.519 What did God say before Jesus came about the Messiah? 00:00:21.519 --> 00:00:31.600 What were some of the expectations that people might have had about the Messiah in Jesus' day 00:00:31.600 --> 00:00:35.600 if they were carefully listening to the Scriptures of the Old Testament? 00:00:37.019 --> 00:00:40.899 The Old Testament Scriptures point to Jesus in countless ways. 00:00:41.579 --> 00:00:45.299 But for this morning, we're just going to be doing a little sampling of some of them, 00:00:45.719 --> 00:00:50.640 some of those passages, specifically the ones that talk about the coming of the Messiah. 00:00:51.520 --> 00:00:53.440 We start here. 00:00:54.560 --> 00:00:57.740 What does the title Messiah even mean? 00:00:58.820 --> 00:01:07.340 The word Messiah comes from the Hebrew, Mashiach, and that word means anointed one. 00:01:08.879 --> 00:01:12.900 To anoint someone was to pour oil over their head. 00:01:13.340 --> 00:01:19.760 And doing that signified that they were being set apart from other people for a special role. 00:01:19.760 --> 00:01:30.400 At God's command, Moses anointed his brother Aaron and Aaron's sons to serve as God's priests at the tabernacle 00:01:30.400 --> 00:01:33.760 just after God led Israel out of Egypt. 00:01:34.800 --> 00:01:41.000 Pouring a special oil onto their heads was a visible and tangible symbol 00:01:41.000 --> 00:01:46.400 that God himself had chosen these men to serve in a particular unique way. 00:01:46.400 --> 00:01:52.200 But anointing was also practiced in ancient times at the installation of a king. 00:01:53.080 --> 00:01:57.140 There's a reference to an anointing ceremony in the period of the judges 00:01:57.140 --> 00:02:00.760 after Israel had come to rest in the land of Canaan. 00:02:01.880 --> 00:02:07.160 And this particular reference from Judges chapter 9 was not a good anointing. 00:02:07.159 --> 00:02:13.859 There were some men in Israel and they anointed a man named Abimelech and they crowned him as their king. 00:02:14.500 --> 00:02:18.340 But Abimelech was a treacherous and murderous man. 00:02:19.060 --> 00:02:21.199 And God actively opposed him. 00:02:22.079 --> 00:02:25.439 This man governed Israel for about three years. 00:02:26.000 --> 00:02:27.719 And then he was killed. 00:02:27.719 --> 00:02:32.580 This was a case of some of the Israelites choosing a man for themselves. 00:02:34.800 --> 00:02:38.280 But he was definitely not God's choice for his people. 00:02:39.120 --> 00:02:43.560 Though this is the first time in the Bible that we see this act of anointing, 00:02:43.680 --> 00:02:48.199 pouring out oil in connection with the selection of a king. 00:02:48.199 --> 00:02:54.759 Well, sometime after this in Israel's history came the prophet Samuel. 00:02:55.919 --> 00:02:58.039 This is about 1000 BC. 00:02:59.199 --> 00:03:06.620 And God chose Samuel to speak on his behalf to the people of Israel from the time Samuel was a boy. 00:03:07.399 --> 00:03:08.439 Maybe you know the story. 00:03:09.620 --> 00:03:12.839 You can read about it in the books of 1 and 2 Samuel. 00:03:12.840 --> 00:03:21.340 And there are several references in those books to the anointed one of God. 00:03:22.539 --> 00:03:25.360 And none of these references have to do with the priests. 00:03:25.659 --> 00:03:27.640 They all have to do with a king. 00:03:28.840 --> 00:03:36.539 In fact, by the time we come to 1 Samuel, we see that the men serving as priests in Israel are corrupt. 00:03:37.379 --> 00:03:39.280 They're doing all kinds of wicked things. 00:03:39.280 --> 00:03:46.920 And the eyes of the people in Israel have wandered away from God and away from his tabernacle. 00:03:47.680 --> 00:03:50.979 And they're looking instead at the gods of the nations around them. 00:03:51.879 --> 00:03:54.780 Nations, and they have rulers, and they have kings. 00:03:56.879 --> 00:04:03.819 God hints at what is soon to take place in those days through the prophetic prayer of Samuel's mom. 00:04:03.819 --> 00:04:07.120 Just after the birth of Samuel. 00:04:07.719 --> 00:04:12.539 We can read her prayer in 1 Samuel 2, verse 8. 00:04:12.719 --> 00:04:16.360 She's praying to the Lord and she says this. 00:04:17.219 --> 00:04:24.980 He, that's God, raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap. 00:04:25.819 --> 00:04:31.480 He seats them with princes and has them inherit a throne of honor. 00:04:31.480 --> 00:04:36.680 So who receives a throne of honor? 00:04:37.640 --> 00:04:41.780 The poor man that God raises up from the dust. 00:04:43.879 --> 00:04:45.280 She continues on. 00:04:45.280 --> 00:04:48.280 He will guard the feet of his faithful servants. 00:04:48.819 --> 00:04:52.220 But the wicked will be silenced in the place of darkness. 00:04:53.160 --> 00:04:55.879 It is not by strength that one prevails. 00:04:56.660 --> 00:04:58.840 Those who oppose the Lord will be broken. 00:04:58.839 --> 00:05:01.500 The Most High will thunder from heaven. 00:05:01.919 --> 00:05:03.959 The Lord will judge the ends of the earth. 00:05:05.000 --> 00:05:07.279 She concludes her prayer with these words. 00:05:08.619 --> 00:05:14.179 He, that is, the Lord Most High, will give strength to his king. 00:05:15.239 --> 00:05:20.120 And he will exalt the horn of his anointed. 00:05:20.120 --> 00:05:26.420 The people of Israel, up until this point in the story, have been under the attack. 00:05:26.939 --> 00:05:32.759 They've been under the dominion of various kings of the surrounding nations for the past 400 years or so, 00:05:32.879 --> 00:05:34.199 since the death of Joshua. 00:05:35.459 --> 00:05:40.160 And by God's grace, he raised up champions for them. 00:05:40.959 --> 00:05:45.379 Men who led and judged the people of Israel and even some women. 00:05:45.379 --> 00:05:48.500 And some of these guys were regional. 00:05:49.879 --> 00:05:52.659 All of them were temporary and short-lived. 00:05:53.959 --> 00:05:58.459 Abimelech might have been anointed and named king by those scoundrels who ran with him. 00:05:58.759 --> 00:06:00.159 But he wasn't much of a king. 00:06:01.959 --> 00:06:07.879 More and more, the people in those days wanted to have a great and powerful king of their own. 00:06:07.879 --> 00:06:12.079 Like they saw the other nations around them having. 00:06:12.199 --> 00:06:14.420 They wanted to be like the nations around them. 00:06:16.920 --> 00:06:25.339 Yet even as Samuel is born, Hannah, his mom, prays prophetically at the tabernacle. 00:06:25.339 --> 00:06:27.319 She says, 00:06:27.399 --> 00:06:43.879 For anyone with ears to hear, God was speaking through Hannah that day. 00:06:44.879 --> 00:06:50.959 He was promising that there was coming a king of God's choosing. 00:06:51.399 --> 00:06:53.559 A king whom God would anoint. 00:06:53.560 --> 00:06:55.980 For his people. 00:06:57.100 --> 00:07:01.040 Well, just a little later on in the story, after Samuel has grown up a bit, 00:07:01.540 --> 00:07:05.339 God sends this man without a name, at least not in the scriptures, 00:07:06.040 --> 00:07:08.720 to Eli, the priest at the tabernacle. 00:07:08.840 --> 00:07:11.100 And these are his words to Eli. 00:07:11.259 --> 00:07:14.399 He says to Eli, this is God speaking through the man, 00:07:14.840 --> 00:07:17.540 I will raise up for myself a faithful priest 00:07:17.540 --> 00:07:21.180 who will do according to what is in my heart and mind. 00:07:21.180 --> 00:07:30.360 I will firmly establish his priestly house and they will minister before my anointed one. 00:07:31.060 --> 00:07:31.699 Always. 00:07:33.379 --> 00:07:36.199 There was no king in these days. 00:07:36.199 --> 00:07:39.879 And yet God says, I'm going to deal with the corrupt priests. 00:07:40.300 --> 00:07:43.039 I'm going to replace the whole family of the priests 00:07:43.039 --> 00:07:47.439 that are currently in charge with a man who will be faithful and his sons. 00:07:47.800 --> 00:07:51.920 And they will serve before my anointed one. 00:07:51.920 --> 00:07:56.960 Again, God speaking of a man of his choosing who is coming. 00:07:58.780 --> 00:08:00.960 Well, as the story of Israel continues, 00:08:01.300 --> 00:08:04.860 in the days of Samuel, we see Israel's first king rise to power. 00:08:05.460 --> 00:08:06.439 A man named Saul. 00:08:07.819 --> 00:08:13.400 And Saul is indeed anointed by God in the sense that God has Samuel, 00:08:13.600 --> 00:08:16.540 his prophet, go and pour oil over his head. 00:08:16.540 --> 00:08:23.920 But as the story goes on, we start to see that Saul is more of a king of the people's choosing 00:08:23.920 --> 00:08:25.879 than of God's. 00:08:28.040 --> 00:08:29.160 God allows him. 00:08:29.560 --> 00:08:33.379 God puts his choice behind the choice of the people. 00:08:33.519 --> 00:08:38.240 But we start to see that this man is more of a reflection of the people, 00:08:38.340 --> 00:08:41.399 the kind of king that they are desiring in their faithlessness 00:08:41.399 --> 00:08:46.220 and not the kind of king that God has in mind for his people. 00:08:47.000 --> 00:08:49.840 And so there comes this moment when after Saul disobeys 00:08:49.840 --> 00:08:56.340 and disregards God for the last time when God rejects Saul as king. 00:08:57.340 --> 00:09:01.220 And even though Saul continues to be on the throne of Israel 00:09:01.220 --> 00:09:02.459 and sit there as king, 00:09:02.459 --> 00:09:06.340 God begins to raise up the king of his choosing. 00:09:06.340 --> 00:09:13.080 God sends the prophet Samuel to the little town of Bethlehem. 00:09:14.139 --> 00:09:19.379 And Samuel is there for the express purpose of anointing Israel's next king. 00:09:20.560 --> 00:09:22.960 But even Samuel is surprised. 00:09:23.500 --> 00:09:26.660 When he comes to the end of Jesse's sons, 00:09:27.160 --> 00:09:28.980 having considered all of them, 00:09:29.340 --> 00:09:30.920 some of them fine-looking men, 00:09:30.919 --> 00:09:32.559 and God says, 00:09:33.419 --> 00:09:33.679 Nope. 00:09:35.779 --> 00:09:37.919 Do not consider his appearance 00:09:37.919 --> 00:09:39.719 or his height, 00:09:40.000 --> 00:09:41.679 for I have rejected him. 00:09:42.939 --> 00:09:46.019 The Lord does not look at the things people look at. 00:09:46.839 --> 00:09:48.979 People look at the outward appearance, 00:09:49.779 --> 00:09:52.399 but the Lord looks at the heart. 00:09:54.419 --> 00:09:56.659 So none of them are the ones that I have chosen, 00:09:56.839 --> 00:09:57.399 says the Lord. 00:09:57.399 --> 00:10:00.019 It's the last, 00:10:00.120 --> 00:10:01.159 the last son, 00:10:01.340 --> 00:10:02.240 the youngest son, 00:10:02.620 --> 00:10:03.559 the least son, 00:10:04.659 --> 00:10:06.360 the one who is left out in the fields 00:10:06.360 --> 00:10:07.659 to tend the sheep. 00:10:11.100 --> 00:10:13.120 So Jesse sent for him, 00:10:13.340 --> 00:10:14.220 the youngest son, 00:10:14.279 --> 00:10:15.199 and had him brought in. 00:10:16.039 00:11:01.620 with the sheep, 00:11:01.720 --> 00:11:02.500 quite literally. 00:11:03.939 --> 00:11:05.819 And the rest of 1 and 2 Samuel, 00:11:05.960 --> 00:11:06.879 these books of the Bible, 00:11:06.980 --> 00:11:07.579 is the story 00:11:07.579 --> 00:11:09.139 of how God raised David 00:11:09.139 --> 00:11:10.399 up from the dust 00:11:10.399 --> 00:11:11.159 and seated him 00:11:11.159 --> 00:11:12.019 on the throne 00:11:12.019 --> 00:11:13.699 of Israel. 00:11:14.779 --> 00:11:16.379 And so this is the backstory 00:11:16.379 --> 00:11:17.480 of this title, 00:11:18.639 --> 00:11:19.079 Messiah. 00:11:19.080 --> 00:11:19.180 Messiah. 00:11:20.240 --> 00:11:24.060 David was God's anointed one, 00:11:24.759 --> 00:11:26.120 God's Messiah 00:11:26.120 -->
