00:06:27.500 --> 00:06:29.279 to find our meaning and our identity 00:06:29.279 --> 00:06:30.500 and our security in him. 00:06:31.319 --> 00:06:33.619 And the pinnacle of creation, 00:06:33.899 --> 00:06:35.539 the essence of being human, 00:06:35.899 --> 00:06:36.799 is to know God 00:06:36.799 --> 00:06:37.939 and be in a relationship with him. 00:06:38.519 --> 00:06:39.559 That's where our meaning 00:06:39.559 --> 00:06:40.339 and our security 00:06:40.339 --> 00:06:41.739 and our identity is found. 00:06:42.419 --> 00:06:44.059 It's why the atheistic worldview 00:06:44.059 --> 00:06:45.619 can deconstruct faith, 00:06:45.659 --> 00:06:47.099 but it can't give you meaning 00:06:47.099 --> 00:06:49.319 and purpose in its place. 00:06:49.839 --> 00:06:50.399 It can tell you 00:06:50.399 --> 00:06:51.919 there's nothing meaningful in this world, 00:06:52.019 --> 00:06:52.739 there's no purpose, 00:06:52.819 --> 00:06:53.459 there is no God, 00:06:53.559 --> 00:06:55.059 but it can't give you something meaningful. 00:06:56.099 --> 00:06:57.159 Meaning and significance 00:06:57.160 --> 00:06:58.260 and purpose and identity 00:06:58.260 --> 00:06:59.780 are found in knowing the God 00:06:59.780 --> 00:07:00.380 that made us 00:07:00.380 --> 00:07:01.680 to be in a relationship with him. 00:07:02.500 --> 00:07:03.620 And so God creates us, 00:07:03.680 --> 00:07:26.779 --> 00:07:29.279 doesn't do anything to his kingdom. 00:07:29.759 --> 00:07:30.899 It doesn't threaten his kingdom, 00:07:31.060 --> 00:07:32.019 it doesn't thwart his kingdom, 00:07:32.459 --> 00:07:33.879 it doesn't diminish his kingdom, 00:07:34.019 --> 00:07:35.160 God's kingdom still stands, 00:07:35.579 --> 00:07:36.920 just we, his humanity, 00:07:37.180 --> 00:07:38.500 are outside of his kingdom. 00:07:39.120 --> 00:07:40.879 So God's kingdom is still very secure, 00:07:41.060 --> 00:07:42.560 but we are now outside of it. 00:07:43.300 --> 00:07:45.079 And so God wants to bring us back. 00:07:45.879 --> 00:07:47.620 And so he comes with a plan. 00:07:48.199 --> 00:07:49.519 And he starts off with this promise, 00:07:49.600 --> 00:07:50.899 this promise to this man called Abraham, 00:07:50.899 --> 00:07:52.079 and he says, Abraham, 00:07:52.239 --> 00:07:54.879 I will bless you and all your descendants, 00:07:55.299 --> 00:07:57.279 your descendants will become a mighty family, 00:07:57.759 --> 00:07:59.539 they will become my chosen people, 00:08:00.000 --> 00:08:02.079 and through this family will become 00:08:02.079 --> 00:08:03.959 a one particular person, 00:08:04.039 --> 00:08:05.159 a Messiah, a king, 00:08:05.620 --> 00:08:08.399 and he will open up the doorway to the kingdom 00:08:08.399 --> 00:08:10.399 so that all people from all nations 00:08:10.399 --> 00:08:12.139 and all cultures and all time 00:08:12.139 --> 00:08:14.019 can come back into my kingdom. 00:08:14.719 --> 00:08:16.539 So God makes this promise to Abraham, 00:08:16.679 --> 00:08:18.419 I'll bless you, through you, 00:08:18.420 --> 00:08:20.680 the doors will be opened so that all people 00:08:20.680 --> 00:08:22.379 can come back under my rule 00:08:22.379 --> 00:08:24.220 and experience my grace and my blessing. 00:08:25.500 --> 00:08:26.720 And so God does that. 00:08:26.879 --> 00:08:28.220 And so Abraham's family grows 00:08:28.220 --> 00:08:29.220 and they get bigger and bigger, 00:08:29.520 --> 00:08:32.480 but then God wants to take this family of Abraham 00:08:32.480 --> 00:08:33.360 called the Israelites, 00:08:33.879 --> 00:08:34.840 and he wants to make them 00:08:34.840 --> 00:08:36.759 his distinctive set-apart people. 00:08:37.379 --> 00:08:38.500 So how's he gonna do that? 00:08:39.120 --> 00:08:41.379 Well, he brings them through a rite of passage, 00:08:41.539 --> 00:08:42.420 this profound experience 00:08:42.960 --> 00:08:44.779 that shapes and changes them forever. 00:08:45.539 --> 00:08:48.159 This rite of passage is the Exodus from Egypt. 00:08:48.559 --> 00:08:51.199 They are delivered from slavery and from judgment, 00:08:51.379 --> 00:08:52.699 and now they come out of Egypt, 00:08:53.079 --> 00:08:55.120 and they are God's distinctive people, 00:08:55.199 --> 00:08:56.240 set apart from him. 00:08:56.839 --> 00:08:58.259 The identity has been shaped 00:08:58.259 --> 00:09:00.319 by this rite of passage they've gone through. 00:09:00.839 --> 00:09:03.039 And forever now, they are God's people. 00:09:03.139 --> 00:09:04.120 They've been bought by him. 00:09:49.299 you see God's people, 00:09:49.500 --> 00:09:50.859 they kind of follow instructions 00:09:50.859 --> 00:09:51.620 and they don't 00:09:51.620 --> 00:09:53.039 and they kind of do and they don't. 00:09:53.079 --> 00:09:54.959 And things go very up and down. 00:09:55.939 --> 00:09:56.959 And what's the key? 00:09:58.339 --> 00:10:01.139 Why do God's people do well and then do badly? 00:10:01.439 --> 00:10:02.939 What's the key at the top of this, 00:10:03.299 --> 00:10:06.100 the kind of wave and the bottom of the trough? 00:10:06.799 --> 00:10:08.840 Well, often it comes down to leadership. 00:10:09.620 --> 00:10:10.980 What kind of leaders they have. 00:10:11.559 --> 00:10:13.139 When Israel has a great leader, 00:10:13.659 --> 00:10:14.960 man, God's people are blessed. 00:10:15.179 --> 00:10:16.000 The whole nation does well. 00:10:16.080 --> 00:10:16.699 They flourish. 00:10:17.139 --> 00:10:18.600 But when there's a lousy leader, 00:10:18.740 --> 00:10:19.639 oh, things go down. 00:10:19.639 --> 00:10:22.679 And the whole nation kind of falls into disarray. 00:10:23.500 --> 00:10:26.519 And so the key is leadership. 00:10:27.279 --> 00:10:27.659 Leadership. thing with God's instructions 00:10:35.079 --> 00:10:37.439 is they tell you what to do. 00:10:37.559 --> 00:10:39.980 God's law, they tell you what the sands are, 00:10:40.059 --> 00:10:42.279 but they don't actually give you the ability to do it. 00:10:42.980 --> 00:10:43.639 So they tell you, 00:10:43.740 --> 00:10:45.439 this is what it looks like to be a righteous people, 00:10:45.539 --> 00:10:46.259 a righteous nation. 00:10:46.259 --> 00:10:48.219 This is how to experience God's blessing. 00:10:48.699 --> 00:10:51.439 They don't give you the ability to actually do it. 00:10:52.480 --> 00:10:54.059 And so they know the instructions, 00:10:54.259 --> 00:10:55.039 but how do they do it? 00:10:55.079 --> 00:10:56.059 Well, they actually need a leader 00:10:56.059 --> 00:10:57.579 that's gonna help them to do it. 00:10:58.339 --> 00:11:01.259 And so Israel's story really depends 00:11:01.259 --> 00:11:02.779 on what kind of leader they have. 00:11:02.860 --> 00:11:04.000 And so at first they have Moses, 00:11:04.100 --> 00:11:05.240 and he's a pretty good leader. 00:11:06.339 --> 00:11:07.539 A couple of bad moments, 00:11:07.620 --> 00:11:08.799 but generally Moses is great, 00:11:08.980 --> 00:11:10.659 and God's people go forward. 00:11:11.339 --> 00:11:12.919 They get to the brink of the promised land. 00:11:13.000 --> 00:11:14.339 And then they have this leader called Joshua, 00:11:14.439 --> 00:11:15.699 and Joshua's a great leader. 00:11:16.259 --> 00:11:17.079 He's a man of God. 00:11:17.139 --> 00:11:17.860 He's a man of faith. 00:11:17.919 --> 00:11:19.000 He really trusts God. 00:11:19.319 --> 00:11:20.439 He defeats their enemies, 00:11:20.639 --> 00:11:22.699 and he brings them into the promised land, 00:11:22.740 --> 00:11:23.919 and things are looking good. 00:11:24.799 --> 00:11:26.719 But then Joshua dies, 00:11:27.419 --> 00:11:28.559 and things start to go down here. 00:11:29.319 --> 00:11:30.639 And so listen to what Judges 00:11:33.940 --> 00:11:34.360 died, 00:11:34.899 --> 00:11:36.259 there arose another generation 00:11:36.259 --> 00:11:37.920 who did not know the Lord 00:11:37.920 --> 00:11:39.580 or the work that he had done for Israel. 00:11:40.139 --> 00:11:41.259 So the people of Israel 00:11:41.259 --> 00:11:43.240 did what was evil in the sight of the Lord 00:11:43.240 --> 00:11:44.420 and served foreign
