Let me just jump straight in and say, Easter is what Christianity offers a world 00:00:26.920 --> 00:00:35.960 that is losing hope in its ability to fix itself. That's Easter. It's what Christianity offers you, 00:00:37.320 --> 00:00:46.320 you who cannot change, you who cannot find peace, cannot find security, cannot find hope, 00:00:46.320 --> 00:00:54.460 cannot find meaning. And so today and the next three Sundays, we as a church are going to be 00:00:54.460 --> 00:01:03.480 looking at hope and the hope that Easter offers this world. And already, Deb has indicated this 00:01:03.480 --> 00:01:11.079 time a year ago, we were in lockdown. We were not able to meet together as we are now because of 00:01:11.079 --> 00:01:18.760 COVID-19. In the past year, we have been in the midst of the worst global pandemic in a century 00:01:18.760 --> 00:01:28.900 and hopes even now of an early solution and for life to go back to normal is dashed again and again 00:01:28.900 --> 00:01:37.760 and again and again. And the problem we know with this pandemic is not just sickness. Virtually every 00:01:37.760 --> 00:01:45.980 sector in society will be impacted and will feel the repercussions of COVID-19 for years to come. 00:01:45.980 --> 00:01:54.420 And especially the vulnerable in our society. They will bear the greatest burden once again. 00:01:55.840 --> 00:02:03.520 Death, pandemics, injustice, family breakdown, social isolation, cancel culture, the threat of wars. 00:02:04.460 --> 00:02:12.480 None of it has stopped. None of it has stopped while we have faced a global enemy against the life of 00:02:12.479 --> 00:02:23.439 humanity. Which is confusing for us. In the West, particularly. For over two centuries now, 00:02:24.819 --> 00:02:32.719 Western societies like ours have put hope in the progressiveness of history. To put it simply, 00:02:33.679 --> 00:02:40.699 every day and in every way, we're getting better and better. And yet we're not. 00:02:40.699 --> 00:02:48.699 It's the strong belief that came out of the age of enlightenment that every generation would 00:02:48.699 --> 00:02:57.439 experience a better world than the one before it. The assumption is that via human reason, ingenuity, 00:02:58.039 --> 00:03:08.299 science, once freed from the superstitions of beliefs from centuries past, we would have a better future 00:03:08.300 --> 00:03:16.540 future together. Now we should have learned that lesson. We haven't. We should have learned that 00:03:16.540 --> 00:03:24.340 lesson in the first four decades of the 20th century. In the space of four decades, we faced two world wars 00:03:24.340 --> 00:03:30.920 like we'd never seen before. A global pandemic and the Great Depression. In fact, in the 20th century 00:03:30.919 --> 00:03:37.319 alone, more people were killed in wars than all history prior combined. 00:03:39.879 --> 00:03:44.539 What followed those four decades was the Cold War and the threat of nuclear holocaust. 00:03:45.379 --> 00:03:52.879 And it seems that the greatest threat to our hope for a better world is not the natural environment 00:03:52.879 --> 00:03:59.199 around us, but the various forms of evil that spring from the heart of the human being. 00:04:01.439 --> 00:04:08.659 Science could come up with a vaccine for COVID-19, but it can't eradicate human evil. 00:04:08.659 --> 00:04:16.659 Now by evil, I don't mean just the really big stuff like, you know, the Jewish Holocaust. 00:04:17.500 --> 00:04:26.579 I mean the ordinary cruelties of self-interest day by day in business, racism, arrogance, pride, 00:04:26.740 --> 00:04:34.120 dishonesty, corruptions, abuse, sexism, the countless acts of selfishness that we all practice day by day. 00:04:34.120 --> 00:04:38.439 And that brings me to Easter. 00:04:39.600 --> 00:04:42.040 And the hope for humanity. 00:04:42.840 --> 00:04:50.000 The word the Bible uses for hope is so much stronger than the one that's used in the English language. 00:04:50.639 --> 00:04:54.079 It means a profound certainty. 00:04:55.319 --> 00:04:57.040 Profound certainty. 00:04:58.579 --> 00:05:01.439 Christians are profoundly certain, 00:05:01.439 --> 00:05:06.319 even in the midst of pandemics and hardships, 00:05:06.959 --> 00:05:14.000 that God is guiding every twist and every turn of their life towards the resurrection of their bodies 00:05:14.000 --> 00:05:21.439 and their souls for a new, eternal and perfect world where everything wrong doesn't exist. 00:05:24.240 --> 00:05:26.639 It's a profound certainty. 00:05:26.639 --> 00:05:31.300 And all of this profound, certain hope is fixed. 00:05:32.459 --> 00:05:38.339 All of it is fixed to the explosive three days 00:05:38.339 --> 00:05:43.399 where the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, Jesus of Nazareth, 00:05:43.939 --> 00:05:47.919 happened around 2,000 years ago in Jerusalem, Israel. 00:05:48.500 --> 00:05:50.360 In time, in space. 00:05:50.599 --> 00:05:52.360 It's a certain hope. 00:05:52.360 --> 00:06:01.939 And so my plan today is to take us into the beginnings of those events 00:06:01.939 --> 00:06:04.920 and really just focus on two things. 00:06:05.319 --> 00:06:11.000 Two things that Jesus said on the cross in that Bible reading that was just read out to us. 00:06:11.500 --> 00:06:19.240 And the first of those things reveals the nature of the hope that Jesus offers us. 00:06:19.240 --> 00:06:26.860 And the second thing that he says is how we can take up the hope that he offers us. 00:06:27.379 --> 00:06:28.819 So first of all, that's all I'm saying. 00:06:28.900 --> 00:06:29.439 Two things. 00:06:29.819 --> 00:06:31.160 Take a little while, but two things. 00:06:45.120 --> 00:06:47.240 We read this in verse 28. 00:06:47.240 --> 00:06:52.699 Later, knowing that everything had been finished. 00:06:53.759 --> 00:06:57.460 And so that the scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, 00:06:58.120 --> 00:07:00.740 I am thirsty. 00:07:03.540 --> 00:07:06.019 Now, our first reaction to that is, 00:07:06.759 --> 00:07:08.560 well, of course he's thirsty. 00:07:08.840 --> 00:07:10.980 I mean, you know, it's the Middle East. 00:07:11.139 --> 00:07:13.040 It's really sand and sun there. 00:07:13.259 --> 00:07:14.460 It's really hot. 00:07:14.459 --> 00:07:16.879 He's been crucified under the Middle Eastern sun. 00:07:16.979 --> 00:07:18.419 He's losing lots of fluid. 00:07:18.939 --> 00:07:23.939 In fact, one of the things that you died from in crucifixion was dehydration. 00:07:24.459 --> 00:07:26.919 You died from dehydration amongst other things. 00:07:27.719 --> 00:07:31.099 And so, but if we linger over those words a little bit, 00:07:31.159 --> 00:07:32.959 we realize that in actual fact, 00:07:33.039 --> 00:07:35.719 it might be something significant that's happening here. 00:07:36.099 --> 00:07:37.399 Maybe there's something a little bit deeper. 00:07:37.500 --> 00:07:38.679 We need to think about this. 00:07:38.680 --> 00:07:44.139 You see, because Jesus has suffered an awful lot up until this point, right? 00:07:44.740 --> 00:07:47.319 He has been beaten in the face with fists. 00:07:47.920 --> 00:07:51.439 He has been lashed with a whip across his back in such a way. 00:07:51.879 --> 00:07:53.780 His --> 00:08:02.420 He had tent pegs driven through his hands and his feet. 00:08:02.420 --> 00:08:10.100 He's had a crown of thorns squeezed over his head and lacerated his head. 00:08:10.360 --> deeper going on here. 00:08:45.100 --> 00:08:49.519 Something a bit deeper than just mere, I need a drink. 00:08:49.519 --> 00:08:54.199 And what's going on deeper here is, 00:08:54.559 --> 00:08:59.279 is a connection to something happened that much earlier in John's gospel, 00:08:59.379 --> 00:09:00.259 in John chapter four. 00:09:01.759 --> 00:09:05.679 Early in this biography, Jesus encounters a woman at a well. 00:09:06.759 --> 00:09:08.279 She's a Samaritan woman. 00:09:08.659 --> 00:09:12.579 And she is a mortal enemy of the Jewish people in the first century. 00:09:12.580 --> 00:09:17.500 And she is surprised, as she goes to draw water from the well, 00:09:17.600 --> 00:09:19.980 that Jesus says to her, a mortal enemy, 00:09:20.680 --> 00:09:22.540 can you give me a drink? 00:09:25.420 --> 00:09:28.920 Jesus says to her in chapter four, verse 13, 00:09:29.560 --> 00:09:31.400 everyone who drinks from this water, 00:09:31.580 --> 00:09:33.700 the water that you will draw from this well, 00:09:33.800 --> 00:09:35.320 will be thirsty again. 00:09:35.320 --> 00:09:38.759 But whoever drinks the water that I give them, 00:09:38.940 --> 00:09:41.879 will never thirst again. 00:09:43.580 --> 00:09:45.639 Indeed, the water that I give them, 00:09:45.940 --> 00:09:49.259 will become in them a spring of water, 00:09:49.840 --> 00:09:52.500 welling up to eternal life. 00:09:54.600 --> 00:09:58.860 So again, even as he asked for a drink of water in John four, 00:09:58.980 --> 00:10:02.440 he's talking about here something that's much deeper than mere physical thirst. 00:10:04.060 --> 00:10:08.259 That's because in the Bible, thirst is a metaphor for emptiness. 00:10:08.259 --> 00:10:12.659 It's a metaphor for spiritual emptiness 00:10:12.659 --> 00:10:17.200 that comes when we do not put God, our creator, 00:10:17.379 --> 00:10:19.299 at the center of our life. 00:10:19.740 --> 00:10:20.980 For instance, Psalm 42, 00:10:21.259 --> 00:10:24.120 as the deer pants for the streams of water, 00:10:24.659 --> 00:10:27.299 so my soul pants for you, my God. 00:10:28.899 --> 00:10:32.879 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. 00:10:32.879 --> 00:10:34.700 Where can I go and meet with him? 00:10:36.799 --> 00:10:40.659 You see, it's one thing to believe that God exists, 00:10:41.559 --> 00:10:44.559 as the vast majority of our world still does. 00:10:44.559 --> 00:10:53.799 But it's quite another thing to have him as the central reality of your life. 00:10:53.799 --> 00:10:58.039 It's not belief in God, 00:10:58.759 --> 00:11:01.699 an intellectual assent that God exists, 00:11:02.159 --> 00:11:06.359 that our souls need so much as meeting God, 00:11:06.659 --> 00:11:08.759 knowing God, experiencing God. 00:11:08.899 --> 00:11:10.839 Without meeting, knowing, experiencing God, 00:11:10.899 --> 00:11:14.579 without him being the central reality of our life, 00:11:15.079 --> 00:11:16.500 we thirst. 00:11:16.500 --> 00:11:21.100 We die. 00:11:24.179 --> 00:11:26.759 That is, it's possible to have a belief in God, 00:11:26.840 --> 00:11:31.700 but have something else as the central defining reality for your life. 00:11:32.860 --> 00:11:35.399 If I may continue this metaphor a little bit more, 00:11:36.360 --> 00:11:37.580 these other things, 00:11:38.200 --> 00:11:40.779 success, approval, comfort, friendship, family, 00:11:40.960 --> 00:11:43.039 sex and romance, influence, money, 00:11:43.460 --> 00:11:44.700 a whole range of things, 00:11:44.700 --> 00:11:45.259 power, 00:11:46.300 --> 00:11:53.400 the actual drink that we are pouring into our souls to quench the thirst, 00:11:53.820 --> 00:11:56.220 the emptiness that we feel on the inside. 00:11:57.240 --> 00:12:00.520 We are hoping that these things will fill us up 00:12:00.520 --> 00:12:03.160 and satisfy us and give us hope. 00:12:04.360 --> 00:12:06.020 And the point that Jesus is getting to 00:12:06.020 --> 00:12:09.040 is if we attempt to quench the thirst of our soul 00:12:09.040 --> 00:12:11.360 with anything else than the love and the beauty 00:12:11.360 --> 00:12:13.360 and the comfort of God in Jesus Christ, 00:12:13.360 --> 00:12:19.120 then we will thirst again and again and again and again forever. 00:12:19.919 --> 00:12:26.580 Only God in Jesus can fully and satisfyingly quench the thirst of our emptiness. 00:12:28.820 --> 00:12:31.720 Everything else is like drinking seawater. 00:12:31.720 --> 00:12:36.180 It just simply makes you more thirsty. 00:12:36.179 --> 00:12:40.319 And so back in John 4 00:12:40.319 --> 00:12:43.620 and Jesus meeting with this Samaritan woman, 00:12:45.199 --> 00:12:46.039 Jesus says, 00:12:46.399 --> 00:12:48.239 the water that I will give them 00:12:48.239 --> 00:12:50.819 will become in them a spring of water 00:12:50.819 --> 00:12:52.959 welling up to eternal life. 00:12:53.939 --> 00:12:55.179 And so the woman hears this 00:12:55.179 --> 00:12:55.819 and he goes, 00:12:55.959 --> 00:12:58.679 Sir, give me that water right there. 00:12:58.679 --> 00:13:00.319 Give me that water 00:13:00.319 --> 00:13:01.899 so that I don't thirst 00:13:01.899 --> 00:13:03.519 and I don't have to keep coming here, 00:13:03.599 --> 00:13:03.819 drinking, 00:13:04.019 --> 00:13:04.219 you know, 00:13:04.239 --> 00:13:05.199 drawing the water here. 00:13:06.939 --> 00:13:07.959 What's amazing here, 00:13:08.059 --> 00:13:09.079 Jesus wants to give it. 00:13:09.739 --> 00:13:11.819 She immediately wants it 00:13:11.819 --> 00:13:15.099 and then Jesus doesn't give it to her. 00:13:17.779 --> 00:13:18.879 Not straight away. 00:13:18.879 --> 00:13:20.820 Instead, 00:13:21.500 --> 00:13:22.519 what appears to happen 00:13:22.519 --> 00:13:26.299 is that Jesus seems to change the subject in John 4. 00:13:27.659 --> 00:13:28.279 He says to her, 00:13:28.320 --> 00:13:28.399 well, 00:13:28.419 --> 00:13:29.159 go and get your husband. 00:13:30.759 --> 00:13:31.960 And her reply is, 00:13:32.019 --> 00:13:32.139 well, 00:13:32.179 --> 00:13:32.559 actually, 00:13:32.639 --> 00:13:33.500 I don't have a husband. 00:13:34.059 --> 00:13:34.840 And Jesus says, 00:13:34.879 --> 00:13:35.799 you're absolutely right. 00:13:36.259 --> 00:13:37.460 You have no husband. 00:13:37.539 --> 00:13:38.080 The fact is, 00:13:38.100 --> 00:13:39.059 you've had five
