exactly the same thing. 00:06:49.720 --> 00:06:55.800 The sons of Elim, the sons of God, present themselves before the Lord. 00:06:56.720 --> 00:06:59.020 And they shout for joy at creation. 00:08:47.180 We could say seven million more examples of how the voice of the Lord speaks and thunders, couldn't we? 00:08:47.179 --> 00:08:56.500 But by using this phrase seven times in a concise, poetic way, that number seven stands for all the countless ways the Lord speaks. 00:08:56.500 --> 00:09:08.500 Brothers and sisters, the next time that you get to hear thunder in the clouds, let it 00:12:07.519 --> 00:12:12.039 Lebanon was the land up north of Israel. 00:12:12.519 --> 00:12:13.419 Up in the mountains. 00:12:14.179 --> 00:12:18.519 It was the land that was possessed by the Canaanites and the Phoenicians. 00:12:18.659 --> 00:12:20.460 Outside of the kingdom of Israel. 00:12:22.360 --> 00:12:24.639 And these were Baal worshippers. 00:12:26.740 --> 00:12:27.299 Verse 6. 00:12:27.299 --> 00:12:31.379 David says that God makes them skip also like a calf. 00:12:31.659 --> 00:12:32.620 Lebanon and Syrian. 00:12:33.379 --> 00:12:35.819 Like a wild young ox. 00:12:37.139 --> 00:12:40.219 Lebanon and Syrian on the two highest mountain ranges. 00:12:40.599 --> 00:12:43.419 On the northern border of Israel. 00:12:45.099 --> 00:12:48.240 Syrian is the Phoenician name for Mount Hermon. 00:12:48.779 --> 00:12:53.139 And it towers over 9,000 feet above sea level. 00:12:53.139 --> 00:13:03.480 In the ancient mind, these mountains were the ultimate symbols of stability, permanency, and raw physical power. 00:13:04.659 --> 00:13:07.179 Mountains are completely immovable. 00:13:07.460 --> 00:13:10.100 We know those driving around them here in Colorado, don't we? 00:13:12.279 --> 00:13:18.799 And these Phoenician Canaanite Baal worshippers, as well as the Philistine worshippers of Baal. 00:13:18.799 --> 00:13:22.279 They believed that Baal was the cloud rider. 00:13:22.979 --> 00:13:26.259 He was the god that lived up on one of those mountains in their land. 00:13:26.699 --> 00:13:30.399 And from there, he orchestrated and directed the rain and the thunderstorm. 00:13:31.599 --> 00:13:35.959 They gave Baal glory for the rain that would bring the crops and their food. 00:13:37.139 --> 00:13:41.899 They were worshipping a demon, a false god, in the place of the creator. 00:13:41.899 --> 00:13:52.480 Worshippers of Baal believed that he ruled over all the earth and controlled these storms that were blowing in over Israel. 00:13:53.740 --> 00:14:06.639 And here in Psalm 29, it's David, the king, who is a shadow of the king Jesus, reclaiming Yahweh is the lord of the storm. 00:14:06.639 --> 00:14:14.799 Yahweh, not Baal, is the true king who commands the heaven, the thunder, the rain across all borders. 00:14:15.639 --> 00:14:23.360 David compares these mountains of the enemies of God up north to a calf and a young wild ox. 00:14:23.960 --> 00:14:31.679 He says they're skipping and leaping and bounding like they're full of terror at Yahweh's voice. 00:14:31.679 --> 00:14:38.620 Verse 7 says the voice of the Lord divides the flames of fire. 00:14:39.439 --> 00:14:43.039 It's a mysterious poetic description, but it's actually perfect. 00:14:43.879 --> 00:14:50.339 The literal word there, the verb, is that the voice of the Lord hews out flames of fire. 00:14:50.340 --> 00:14:59.600 He's saying if you take a big massive boulder like a rock and you picture a giant chisel striking the top of that rock, 00:14:59.680 --> 00:15:02.800 you would watch that rock splinter and crack all the way down. 00:15:03.759 --> 00:15:11.259 And the sound that that would make and even the jagged cutting down, that's exactly like a strike of lightning. 00:15:11.980 --> 00:15:13.580 And that's what he's describing it at. 00:15:13.660 --> 00:15:18.980 This flame of fire that God has smashed down through the atmosphere. As these dark storm clouds roll in and thunder begins to crack and lightning begins to strike on the land up on these mountaintops, 00:15:41.440 --> 00:15:45.360 everything seems to tremble and quake at the voice of the Lord. 00:15:45.360 --> 00:15:53.220 The sky is violently split open by bolts of lightning that come from the mouth of God, so to speak. 00:15:53.220 --> 00:16:02.040 The voice of the Lord is so sharp and powerful that it carves out these flashes of fire like a stonemason. 00:16:02.039 --> 00:16:12.500 This false god that the neighbors worshipped, Baal, when they would make an icon of him, you know, on a coin or something like that, 00:16:12.559 --> 00:16:15.699 they would put in his hand a lightning bolt. 00:16:16.419 --> 00:16:18.779 So a lightning bolt was the weapon of Baal. 00:16:20.099 --> 00:16:22.519 You see what Psalm 29 does. 00:16:22.599 --> 00:16:24.519 It says that lightning is God's tool. 00:16:24.519 --> 00:16:32.259 It's made by the spoken word of the living God who spoke and brought everything in creation into being. 00:16:33.240 --> 00:16:35.559 He is the one who deserves to be praised. 00:16:37.480 --> 00:16:41.740 And the voice of the Lord thunders across all borders. 00:16:42.480 --> 00:16:46.199 Even those outside of the kingdom of God in Israel at this time, 00:16:46.659 --> 00:16:49.220 they could not deny the power of the creator. that God has given Israel at this moment in redemptive history. 00:19:09.859 --> 00:19:14.439 And the voice of the Lord now in this desert, this wilderness, 00:19:15.240 --> 00:19:17.919 the winds, the storm, the thunder, 00:19:18.359 --> 00:19:21.679 it's like it's making the sand in the wilderness dance. 00:19:22.740 --> 00:19:24.479 He shakes the wilderness. 00:19:26.419 --> 00:19:30.099 They
