to go back to Luke chapter 9 and verse 23 so you know what kind of denial we're talking about. 00:03:17.039 --> 00:03:22.719 He said, if anyone wants to follow after me, let him deny himself. 00:03:23.039 --> 00:03:28.620 Just so we're clear, Mark Twain said denial ain't just a river in Egypt. 00:03:28.620 --> 00:03:34.759 We're not talking about the kind of denial you might be thinking 00:04:14.340 All right? 00:04:14.520 --> 00:04:18.100 Simeon the Elder was a monk from Aleppo, Syria. 00:04:18.100 --> 00:04:20.280 He was a stylite. 00:04:21.180 --> 00:04:28.879 A stylite is someone who believes that physical suffering is necessary to be right with God. 00:04:31.220 --> 00:04:35.920 An ascetic, a stylite is a form of an ascetic. 00:04:36.160 --> 00:04:38.560 Someone who ascribes to asceticism. 00:04:38.560 --> 00:04:47.540 So an ascetic is someone who is characterized by or suggests the practice of severe self-discipline 00:04:47.540 --> 00:04:55.319 and abstaining from all forms of indulgence, typically for religious reasons. 00:04:56.740 --> 00:05:05.620 So it's someone who takes self-denial to the extreme, usually for the reasons of faith. 00:05:05.620 --> 00:05:12.600 This is an early painting of Simeon the Elder. 00:05:14.139 --> 00:05:18.519 Simeon the Elder became a monk, like we said, only over in Syria. 00:05:19.459 --> 00:05:22.519 He joined a monastery in Aleppo. 00:05:23.420 --> 00:05:29.680 And his views and his ideas were so extreme, they kicked him out of his monastery. 00:05:29.680 --> 00:05:35.639 How extreme do you have to be to get kicked out of a monastery? 00:05:36.400 --> 00:05:39.160 Because they think you're too strict, you're too rigid. 00:05:40.400 --> 00:05:42.980 He moved to a tiny little hut. 00:05:44.980 --> 00:05:48.139 But people wouldn't leave him alone in his hut. 00:05:48.780 --> 00:05:56.100 So he built a nine-foot pillar and a little three-by-three-foot platform on top of the pillar 00:05:56.100 come down from our self-erected high place, 00:08:18.480 --> 00:08:22.840 to deny our inner pride and self-righteous attitude, 00:08:22.840 --> 00:08:27.760 and to follow Jesus himself as he leads us
