Bible, you're welcome to turn there. 00:00:11.540 --> 00:00:18.320 And this morning we come to one of my favorite accounts of the great signs that Jesus performed. 00:00:19.140 --> 00:00:26.900 We're still looking at Jesus' early ministry, and a couple weeks ago we heard about how Jesus began to call his first disciples, 00:00:26.899 --> 00:00:32.500 and we heard about how he healed a man with a severe skin disease. 00:00:33.259 --> 00:00:38.780 This morning we're going to hear about how Jesus healed a paralyzed man. 00:00:39.659 --> 00:00:44.439 And we're reading together from Luke chapter 5, verse 17. 00:00:46.539 --> 00:00:53.840 One day Jesus was teaching, and Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting there. 00:00:53.840 --> 00:01:00.680 They had come from every village of Galilee and from Judea and Jerusalem. 00:01:01.620 --> 00:01:05.640 And the power of the Lord was with Jesus to heal the sick. 00:01:07.159 --> 00:01:16.900 Some men came carrying a paralyzed man on a mat and tried to take him into the house to lay him before Jesus. 00:01:16.900 --> 00:01:20.100 So Luke sets the scene for us. 00:01:20.500 --> 00:01:22.980 Jesus is in the house, and he's teaching. 00:01:23.540 --> 00:01:26.400 And the house is jam-packed with people. 00:01:27.620 --> 00:01:33.800 Luke mentions that a good number of Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting there listening to Jesus. 00:01:34.900 --> 00:01:35.960 Who were the Pharisees? 00:01:36.520 --> 00:01:43.080 They were a highly influential religious party, or some would call them a movement, among the Jews. 00:01:43.079 --> 00:01:46.780 And they were especially influential among the common people. 00:01:47.819 --> 00:01:52.439 Some of them held positions in the Sanhedrin, which was the Jewish ruling council, 00:01:52.959 --> 00:01:56.560 though that was largely controlled actually by the Sadducees. 00:01:57.319 --> 00:02:03.480 The Pharisees were known for their strict observance and adherence to the law of Moses. 00:02:03.480 --> 00:02:13.360 And along with that, they also had their own oral tradition, which they saw as authoritative and necessary in order to interpret and imply the scriptures correctly. 00:02:14.140 --> 00:02:18.300 So they played a significant role in the religious life of the Jews. 00:02:18.900 --> 00:02:25.580 They were often ones teaching in the synagogues and giving interpretations of the law. 00:02:25.580 --> 00:02:30.360 The others, Luke says, were there were the teachers of the law. 00:02:31.500 --> 00:02:34.780 Not all teachers of the law were Pharisees. 00:02:35.760 --> 00:02:38.840 Being a Pharisee was like having a religious affiliation. 00:02:39.560 --> 00:02:42.000 But a teacher of the law was a profession. 00:02:43.260 --> 00:02:50.020 These guys were kind of like lawyers or judges who specialized in matters of religion. 00:02:50.439 --> 00:02:51.200 They were scholars. 00:02:51.199 --> 00:02:57.299 They were considered religious experts and authorities on the law. 00:02:57.560 --> 00:02:58.539 They taught the law. 00:02:58.799 --> 00:03:04.939 They gave rulings and judgments about the meaning of the law of Moses and about compliance with it. 00:03:06.019 --> 00:03:10.299 So Luke wants us to know that these guys were there as Jesus was teaching. 00:03:11.120 --> 00:03:17.239 Not only that, but Luke wants us to know that this wasn't just a couple Pharisees and a couple teachers of the law from town. 00:03:17.240 --> 00:03:22.420 These Pharisees and teachers of the law had come from all over the country. 00:03:23.560 --> 00:03:26.780 From every village of Galilee. 00:03:27.260 --> 00:03:29.800 Galilee was the whole northern region of Israel. 00:03:30.719 --> 00:03:33.920 And from the southern region of Israel, Judea. 00:03:35.540 --> 00:03:40.060 And they came from Jerusalem, the capital city of Israel as well. 00:03:40.400 --> 00:03:41.900 So this is no small detail. 00:03:42.080 --> 00:03:43.100 Jesus is teaching. 00:03:43.620 --> 00:03:46.980 There's a huge crowd from the religious establishment there. 00:03:47.240 --> 00:03:52.020 And so you can already imagine the tension that would have been in the room. 00:03:52.840 --> 00:04:02.040 To them, who is this guy, Jesus, going around teaching town to town, synagogue to synagogue? 00:04:02.760 --> 00:04:04.360 Who does he align with? 00:04:05.420 --> 00:04:08.640 What authority does he claim to be doing this? 00:04:08.639 --> 00:04:12.339 So we've got the Pharisees. 00:04:12.419 --> 00:04:13.879 We've got the teachers of the law there. 00:04:14.339 --> 00:04:18.259 Luke mentions that Jesus has the power of God to heal present. 00:04:19.319 --> 00:04:25.560 And up to this house walk four men carrying a paralyzed man on a mat. 00:04:25.939 --> 00:04:28.120 Now Luke doesn't specify the number of men. 00:04:28.599 --> 00:04:30.539 But Mark in his gospel does. 00:04:30.540 --> 00:04:31.500 It was four men. 00:04:32.500 --> 00:04:36.879 And they are carrying their friend on a mat. 00:04:37.140 --> 00:04:38.300 Literally a bed. 00:04:39.280 --> 00:04:41.620 We don't know exactly what kind of bed this was. 00:04:42.140 --> 00:04:45.820 Many translations today seem to be moving more towards stretcher. 00:04:45.819 --> 00:04:50.920 But it wouldn't obviously be the medical kind that we're used to seeing today. 00:04:51.560 --> 00:04:53.379 It probably would have been something simple. 00:04:53.459 --> 00:04:57.500 Maybe a board wrapped in cloth with some handles cut into it. 00:04:58.939 --> 00:05:04.139 And they're carrying this man who Luke says was paralyzed. 00:05:04.139 --> 00:05:08.159 No other details are given about the man's condition. 00:05:08.579 --> 00:05:12.019 We don't know how long it's scholar Daryl Bach, the typical house in Palestine back then had two stories. 00:07:13.799 --> 00:07:16.659 The roof was the second story. 00:07:17.439 --> 00:07:21.979 And steps often went up to the roof right on the outside of the building. 00:07:22.099 --> 00:07:23.239 They were easily accessible. 00:07:24.059 --> 00:07:28.219 The roof was usually somewhat flat and about six feet above the ground. 00:07:29.059 --> 00:07:32.599 Wooden beams were laid across the top of the stone or mud walls. 00:07:32.600 --> 00:07:38.300 With a layer of reeds, thorns, and several inches of clay on top of them. 00:07:39.439 --> 00:07:41.340 So these men go up on the roof. 00:07:41.840 --> 00:07:45.340 And then they proceed to open a hole in the roof. 00:07:46.460 --> 00:07:50.160 Luke describes the man being lowered through the tiles. 00:07:50.740 --> 00:07:54.379 This wouldn't be like the suspended ceiling tiles that we're used to seeing today. 00:07:55.080 --> 00:07:58.280 Mark in his gospel
