00:03:17.699 --> 00:03:18.259 Have you? 00:03:19.479 --> 00:03:21.879 Well, look at verse 7 of chapter 13. 00:03:24.460 --> 00:03:27.159 Give everyone what you owe him. 00:03:28.099 --> 00:03:34.280 If you owe taxes, take taxes, if it's revenue, then revenue. 00:03:34.280 --> 00:03:41.180 As we fall off, we can think of expression of our love to the governing authorities, 00:03:41.180 --> 00:03:43.680 we pay all that we owe. 00:03:43.680 --> 00:03:47.460 No matter what it is, whether it's the water tax or the property tax, 00:03:47.659 --> 00:03:50.939 pay off all your debts. 00:03:50.939 --> 00:03:56.840 Now you're feeling quite smug because you have paid your tax. 00:03:56.840 --> 00:04:02.840 There's one area of life where we should always be in debt. 00:04:02.840 --> 00:04:05.340 Look at verse 8. 00:04:05.340 --> 00:04:10.800 Let's say, let's say, let no debt remain like something. 00:04:10.800 --> 00:04:20.300 Except, and here it is, the continuing debt to love one another. 00:04:20.300 --> 00:04:27.300 You see, the church that has come to believe and experience the gospel will be seen in 00:04:27.300 --> 00:04:33.300 a continuing depth to love the world around us. 00:04:33.300 --> 00:04:40.300 Because as the gospel takes an effect in our life, it's shaped us into a people of love, 00:04:40.300 --> 00:04:45.300 not just for one another within the church family, but for the wider world. 00:04:45.300 --> 00:04:51.300 Or as it says at the end of verse 8, love for our fellow hands. 00:04:51.300 --> 00:04:57.300 Or at the end of verse 9, love your neighbour as yourself. 00:04:57.300 --> 00:05:08.300 In other words, the people we work with, people that we live with, people that we come into every day. 00:05:08.300 --> 00:05:14.300 At the end of each year I sit down and I work out what tax I should pay. 00:05:14.300 --> 00:05:23.300 I calculate my income, less expenses, then apply the tax rate, it tells me the figure that I have to pay, 00:05:23.300 --> 00:05:26.300 and I pay off my debt. 00:05:26.300 --> 00:05:33.300 Now when we give the sums, when we calculate and consider the love of God towards us, 00:05:33.300 --> 00:05:41.300 when I look and see how Christ has taken my sin debt and made it off with his death on the cross, 00:05:41.300 --> 00:05:47.300 when I see how he has treated my sin debt and his protection, 00:05:47.300 --> 00:05:51.300 so that I am then treated as your son, 00:05:51.300 --> 00:06:00.300 when I calculate all of this, and when I ask that his death has loved and his faithful love towards me, 00:06:00.300 --> 00:06:07.300 I am then paid and continually in debt. 00:06:07.300 --> 00:06:22.300 Not a debt that I pay to earn his favour, but a debt of grateful thanks that is paid in the currency of love to all those around me. 00:06:22.300 --> 00:06:32.300 I don't pay this debt to earn his favour, but rather into grateful expression of love to those around me. 00:06:32.300 --> 00:06:38.300 There are three things that we want to learn about this debt of love. 00:06:38.300 --> 00:06:47.300 The first one is this, love is only made possible by God. 00:06:47.300 --> 00:06:50.300 Let's read verse 18 again. 00:06:50.300 --> 00:06:57.300 Let no debt remain outstanding except a continuing debt to love one another, 00:06:57.300 --> 00:07:03.300 for he who loves his fellow man has fulfilled the law. 00:07:03.300 --> 00:07:10.300 Now, I'm sure we all realise that we don't have to speak with people very long before you realise that loving people, 00:07:10.300 --> 00:07:15.300 never mind on a continual basis, is actually really hard in life. 00:07:15.300 --> 00:07:20.300 Even the people we are married to, or people within our family. 00:07:20.300 --> 00:07:26.300 In fact, without God, loving people is insensible. 00:07:26.300 --> 00:07:31.300 Have a look with me back to chapter 7. 00:07:31.300 --> 00:07:38.300 Go back to Romans chapter 7 verse 18. 00:07:38.300 --> 00:07:40.300 Romans chapter 7 verse 18. 00:07:40.300 --> 00:07:47.300 Here Paul is describing his struggle, this is before he is a Christian. 00:07:47.300 --> 00:07:55.300 Okay, here he is describing his struggle to obey or fulfil the law without God. 00:07:55.300 --> 00:07:58.300 And this is why he says, why do Christ? 00:07:58.300 --> 00:08:00.300 Verse 18. 00:08:00.300 --> 00:08:05.300 He says, I know that nothing good is in me, that is, in my sinful nature. 00:08:05.300 --> 00:08:12.300 For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. 00:08:12.300 --> 00:08:21.300 For what I do is not the good I want to do, no the evil I do not want to do, this I keep on doing. 00:08:21.300 --> 00:08:25.300 Now how many of us can relate to that? 00:08:25.300 --> 00:08:30.300 We know we should love the annoying work of God. 00:08:30.300 --> 00:08:33.299 We know we should love our grumpy neighbours. 00:08:33.299 --> 00:08:35.299 But we just don't seem to do it. 00:08:35.299 --> 00:08:39.299 The fact is, we simply chast both they call Paul. 00:08:39.299 --> 00:08:41.299 We chast love as we should love. 00:08:41.299 --> 00:08:44.299 But here is the point. 00:08:44.299 --> 00:08:47.299 God has actually made it possible for us to love. 00:08:47.299 --> 00:08:49.299 And how did he make it possible? 00:08:49.299 --> 00:08:53.299 Well, continue the argument in chapter 8 verse 3. 00:08:53.299 --> 00:09:00.299 Halfway down to chapter 8 verse 3, the middle of verse 3. 00:09:00.299 --> 00:09:05.299 This is how God makes it possible to love. 00:09:05.299 --> 00:09:16.299 It tells us there that God did it by sending his own son in the life of a sinful man to be a sin offering. 00:09:16.299 --> 00:09:20.299 And so he condemned sin in sinful man. 00:09:20.299 --> 00:09:27.299 It's good enough that Jesus came to a safe place with us and he was treated as a law-free man to love. 00:09:27.299 --> 00:09:30.299 He took us the layer of the earth. 00:09:30.299 --> 00:09:34.299 For all the times we are not loved as we should. 00:09:34.299 --> 00:09:36.299 And why did he do that? 00:09:36.299 --> 00:09:37.299 Well, look at verse 4. 00:09:37.299 --> 00:09:45.299 In order that the righteous requirements of the law might be fully met in hand. 00:09:45.299 --> 00:09:55.299 That means we are now by our faith treated and accepted and if we have been kept and fulfilled and obeyed the law. 00:09:55.299 --> 00:10:00.299 The law-keeping perfection of Jesus is now applied to his power life. 00:10:00.299 --> 00:10:04.299 It's now present in our attention. 00:10:04.299 --> 00:10:07.299 But something even more incredible than this. 00:10:07.299 --> 00:10:15.299 Not only does he take our sin, not only does he give us his perfection, but he gives us, look at the end of verse 4, 00:10:15.299 --> 00:10:20.299 so that we no longer live according to the sinful nature but according to the Spirit. 00:10:20.299 --> 00:10:27.299 He gives us his holy spirit power so that we can obey his law. 00:10:27.299 --> 00:10:30.299 Verse 8 of chapter 8. 00:10:30.299 --> 00:10:35.299 Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God. 00:10:35.299 --> 00:10:46.299 You, however, the Christian, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit if the Spirit God lives in you. 00:10:46.299 --> 00:11:04.299 In other words, God works in us by his Son and by the power of the Holy Spirit and he changes and transforms our lives to make it possible for us to be able to love our neighbours and ourselves. 00:11:04.299 --> 00:11:09.299 Love is made possible by God because we are loved by God. 00:11:09.299 --> 00:11:10.299 God is made possible by God. 00:11:10.299 --> 00:11:19.299 Go back to chapter 13 and verse 9. 00:11:19.299 --> 00:11:27.299 Because when the land of God has taken effect it means we can love our neighbour. 00:11:27.299 --> 00:11:29.299 Chapter 13 verse 9. 00:11:29.299 --> 00:11:30.299 The commandment. 00:11:30.299 --> 00:11:36.299 Do not commit adultery, do not murder, do not steal, do not covet. 00:11:36.299 --> 00:11:39.299 They will not commit adultery, do not commit adultery, do not commit adultery. 00:11:39.299 --> 00:11:48.299 And, whatever other commandments there may be are all sung up in this one rule, love your neighbour as yourself. 00:11:49.299 --> 00:11:55.299 You see when you come to believe and experience the gospel, you see when you come to believe and experience the gospel, you can have love. 00:11:55.299 --> 00:12:00.299 The commandments, the law that are described here, is not to earn God's love. 00:12:00.299 --> 00:12:02.299 The law is there to teach us. 00:12:02.299 --> 00:12:09.299 That's where we learn how to love. The law shows me what love looks like in practice. 00:12:09.299 --> 00:12:17.299 So what does love look like? Look at verse 10. Love goes no harm to its neighbor. 00:12:17.299 --> 00:12:24.299 That's what love is. There's a very large group neighbor. Not just the person sitting there living next door to you, 00:12:24.299 --> 00:12:29.299 but the people who are quite the same way the people who love the broken children every day. 00:12:29.299 --> 00:12:34.299 So let me give you a couple of examples of what is love like. 00:12:34.299 --> 00:12:39.299 He's given us through us in verse 9. In the beginning of verse 9, 00:12:39.299 --> 00:12:50.299 Do not remain the touch. That means because of my love for others, I am not going to take somebody else to smile. 00:12:50.299 --> 00:13:00.299 But it also means that I will not look subtly at another woman, whether that's on the TV or on the computer. 00:13:00.299 --> 00:13:06.299 Love changes the way we treat and the way we look at one another. 00:13:06.299 --> 00:13:12.299 Or look at verse 9. The end of verse 9 says, Do not steal. 00:13:12.299 --> 00:13:21.299 That doesn't just mean leaving out of the shop. It means that because of my love for those I work with, 00:13:21.299 --> 00:13:26.299 because of my love for the employer, I am not going to die off early. 00:13:26.299 --> 00:13:36.299 And I am not going to make up expenses that don't really exist to try and get a little bit more. 00:13:36.299 --> 00:13:43.299 I will love my employer. You see, we cause no harm to our neighbor. 00:13:43.299 --> 00:13:50.299 We love each other well. And the law is not just don't commit adultery, don't commit murder, don't steal, 00:13:50.299 --> 00:13:58.299 but look at verse 9. Whatever other commandment there may be, we are to love our neighbor. 00:13:58.299 --> 00:14:04.299 Yes, it's hard, but God has made it humble. 00:14:04.299 --> 00:14:16.299 So that's the first thing. The second thing is this. Love is not only made possible by God, but love is spurred off by glory. 00:14:16.299 --> 00:14:28.299 So look at verse 11. And do things. That is love your neighbor as yourself, understanding the trend of time. 00:14:28.299 --> 00:14:34.299 Now, I get it. Okay? I'm with you on this. We struggle to love people as we should. 00:14:34.299 --> 00:14:48.299 And so we need to remember that one day the struggle to love is going to be over, because we will be in glory, and we are going to love perfectly. 00:14:48.299 --> 00:14:57.299 You see, right now we are living in a time that we call, or as he refers to it here in verse 11, the present time. 00:14:57.299 --> 00:15:04.299 That means we are living in an age between Christ's first coming and Christ's second coming. 00:15:04.299 --> 00:15:10.299 Okay? That's the age of the time, of the period that we are actually in. 00:15:10.299 --> 00:15:19.299 And the experience within the time we, waiting for Christ's return, there is this battle with the sinful nature. 00:15:19.299 --> 00:15:22.299 So look at the end of verse 14. It says, 00:15:22.299 --> 00:15:29.299 Do not think about it. I just grant it quite a desire to sinful nature. There is a battle going on inside of us. 00:15:29.299 --> 00:15:36.299 The sinful nature doesn't want to love another. It wants to love itself. And so it is batching away us. 00:15:36.299 --> 00:15:45.299 But the good news here is, in verse 11, is that glory is coming. Christ is going to return soon. 00:15:45.299 --> 00:15:58.299 Look what it says in verse 11. The hour has come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. 00:15:58.299 --> 00:16:09.299 He says, look, wake up. Soon the battle has ended, it is all going to be over, and we will love perfectly and continually. 00:16:09.299 --> 00:16:19.299 Our salvation is nearer. The fact that you, I have this morning, means that you are nearer glory than you are, than you are nearer today. 00:16:19.299 --> 00:16:24.299 So because of what is to come, go on loving your neighbor. 00:16:24.299 --> 00:16:27.299 See if we are nearer. 00:16:27.299 --> 00:16:40.299 The earth's nearer, and the expectant lack of glory, and the expectation of glory, in the voyage of the dawn predator, which is part of the chronicles of Narnia. 00:16:40.299 --> 00:16:50.299 Let me just read to you a quote, which I think captures the expectation to what were looking for. 00:16:50.299 --> 00:16:59.299 Lucy and Edmund and Reepicheep, the mighty mouse, are sailing east towards the very end of the road. 00:16:59.299 --> 00:17:08.299 There was no need to roam, for the current stricter of the seven-eighties, none of them slept or ate. 00:17:08.299 --> 00:17:17.299 All that night and the fall next day they delighted me toward, and when the third day dawned, with a fright that you or I could not bear, 00:17:17.299 --> 00:17:22.299 even if he had dark glasses on, they took a wonder ahead. 00:17:22.299 --> 00:17:30.299 It was as if a bowl stood up between them and the sky, a greenish-gray trembling, shivering wall. 00:17:30.299 --> 00:17:42.299 Then up came the sun, and at their first writing they saw it through the wall, and it turned into wonderful rainbow colors. 00:17:42.299 --> 00:17:49.299 Now they could look to the living sun and see it clearly, and see things beyond them. 00:17:49.299 --> 00:18:00.299 What they saw eastward beyond the sun were the plains and mountains. These were warm and green and full of forests and waterfalls, however high you go. 00:18:00.299 --> 00:18:09.299 No one in the boat started that they were seen beyond the end of the world into Aslan's comfort. 00:18:09.299 --> 00:18:14.299 This, said Reepicheep, is where I go on a land. 00:18:14.299 --> 00:18:24.299 Then hastily he got into his car and went and took his path. The car went more and more quickly, and beautifully it brushed up the way inside. 00:18:24.299 --> 00:18:31.299 For one split second they thought what shaped a Reepicheep at the very top. Then it vanished. 00:18:31.299 --> 00:18:38.299 And since that moment no one can truly claim to have seen Reepicheep the last. 00:18:38.299 --> 00:18:49.299 But my belief is that he has come safe to Aslan's country and is alive there to this day. 00:18:49.299 --> 00:19:01.299 You see, we are people on a journey. We are longing for Aslan's country. We are longing for that sun to rise and for the new day to begin. 00:19:01.299 --> 00:19:11.299 Or look at verse 12. The night is nearly over. The day is almost here. We are longing for his glory. We are longing for his glory. 00:19:11.299 --> 00:19:23.299 And we are longing for his glory. We are longing for his glory. We are longing to be no more, and we will love perfectly and continually forever. 00:19:23.299 --> 00:19:35.299 Glory is on the fire. So go on loving all those that you meet and work with every day. 00:19:35.299 --> 00:19:53.299 love is made possible by God, love is stirred up by glory. And the third thing about love is that it is driven by the gospel. Look at verse 12, the second part. 00:19:53.299 --> 00:20:11.299 So with the light of glory to come, because of his one day point of the hour, here's how we live in the present, end of verse 12. So let us put aside the demons of darkness and to expound the armor of light. 00:20:11.299 --> 00:20:36.559 If we are going to be a loving church, a loving people, we've got to engage in the battle to love. It doesn't come easy, we've got to fight for it. We must put on, verse 12, the armor of light. Or as it says in verse 14, rather close yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ. 00:20:36.559 --> 00:20:47.559 And the same thing, the armor of light, the clothing of the Lord Jesus. This is what we need to put on as we step out into the temple to be able to love one another. 00:20:49.559 --> 00:21:05.559 Verse 13, let us behave decently as in the day coming, not in sexual immorality and to watch me, fulfilling our own pleasure, not in deception, 00:21:05.559 --> 00:21:22.559 full of argument and jealous. You see those behaviors that are listed as if they have one thing in common. They all have a deep love for self. 00:21:22.559 --> 00:21:31.559 Because all of these behaviors are all about satisfying my divine and fulfilling my pleasures. It's all a very self-pensure of love. 00:21:32.559 --> 00:21:39.559 Now, unless we put on the armor of light, we're going to end up following the themes of darkness. That's what's going to happen. 00:21:40.559 --> 00:21:49.559 Instead of continually loving others, we will continually love ourselves. We've got to engage in the battle of life. We've got to face up to it. 00:21:49.559 --> 00:21:55.559 We've got to face up to it. It's real. It's intense. And the sinful nature longs to be satisfied with ourselves. 00:21:56.559 --> 00:22:08.559 That's why Christians do, and why we can at times get drunk. That's why Christians do at times watch porn and talk about others. 00:22:08.559 --> 00:22:29.559 And why we have to fight them because we're not going to be surprised because we crave self love. We want to satisfy our own desires. And if we're continually loving self, what we can as a person. 00:22:29.559 --> 00:22:41.559 We're too busy trying to satisfy our own needs and our own desires. Instead we need a gospel driven love. 00:22:41.559 --> 00:22:58.559 We need a gospel driven love. Verse 14. Rather close yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ and do not think about it as we have to satisfy the desires of the sinful nature. 00:22:58.559 --> 00:23:15.559 Instead of thinking up ways to secretly secretly. Instead of planning and seeing what we can do. Instead we disclose ourselves with Christ. 00:23:15.559 --> 00:23:28.559 In other words we let the gospel of Christ shape and transform us and drive us to be a people of love. So what does that look like? What does that mean to do with yourself with Christ? 00:23:28.559 --> 00:23:40.559 Well suppose for a minute that your job requires you to wear a uniform. Every time you go to work in the morning you need to put on your uniform. Maybe you're a guard. Maybe you're a doctor. 00:23:41.559 --> 00:23:49.559 And every morning when you get up and you put on your clothes. When you put on your uniform. Your uniform, your clothes, it tells you to remind you who you are. 00:23:49.559 --> 00:23:56.559 I'm a guard. I'm a guard. I'm a guard. I'm a guard. And it tells you what your job is. I'm going to see justice and peace. 00:23:56.559 --> 00:24:07.559 And in the same way as Christians, in the morning as we get up throughout the day, we are to close ourselves with Christ. 00:24:07.559 --> 00:24:20.559 We are to remind ourselves of the gospel of Jesus Christ. That is the uniform that we dress ourselves in and we put ourselves in. Because the gospel tells us who we are and what we are to do. 00:24:20.559 --> 00:24:36.559 It reminds me as I close myself with Christ. That Christ has died through my sins. That he has taken the blame from all the time I have not lost as I should. And that he has now treated me as his own son accepted and forgiven. 00:24:36.559 --> 00:24:50.559 It also tells me as he has given me the gift. And the power of his loving spirit that I may cry out to him altogether so that I can have the power to fight the battle of the sinful nature. 00:24:51.559 --> 00:24:56.559 He has given to me all that I need to live this life. 00:24:56.559 --> 00:25:14.559 So we have the clothes of Christ. We put on the armour of life. We put on the gospel. We remind ourselves of all that he has done. This is what we trusted and this is what we believe in as a church. 00:25:14.559 --> 00:25:28.559 We remind ourselves of all that we have been in friendly love by God. And he has made it possible to love one another. 00:25:28.559 --> 00:25:43.559 Look at her things. Let no death remain outstanding except the continuous death to life. 00:25:44.559 --> 00:26:00.559 We have not lost our own. We have not lost our own. God has made it possible. We fight it hard. But glory is coming. The struggle will be over and we will continually love Christ. 00:26:00.559 --> 00:26:10.559 Until we get there. Until we get there. We put on the armour of the life. We close ourselves to Christ. And we go right into the world. 00:26:10.559 --> 00:26:14.559 We are demonstrating and living our life. When we look at ourselves as we see them. We do not love as we ought. 00:26:36.559 --> 00:26:48.559 But in the light of us we are incredibly amazed. When we look at ourselves as we see them.
