[0:44] Hebrews. Chapter 8 and 9. Last week we were talking from Chapter 8. Where Christ proves a better covenant. He had a better covenant for us.
[0:56] We talked about the nature of that covenant. How everything in the Old Testament was a temporary thing. Then Jesus came and made a permanent covenant for us.
[1:07] Because his was based on the fact that he was a better high priest. Had a better sanctuary. Which we'll talk about some today. Had a better covenant.
[1:19] Had better everything. And because it was based in heaven. And not based here on earth. And I'm going to skip part of this. Because this. I may not finish this today.
[1:31] If I don't. So. The second thing was. Is. We're doing today. Christ provides a better approach to God. Christ provides a better approach to God.
[1:43] So. Yep. That's the one. All right. In Chapter 9. Look with me in Chapter 9. Beginning at verse 1. Then verily the first covenant. Had also ordinances of divine service.
[1:56] And a worldly sanctuary. For there was a tabernacle made. The first. Wherein was the candlestick. And the table. And the showbread. Which is called the sanctuary.
[2:07] After the second veil. The tabernacle. Which is called the holiest of all. Which had the golden censer. And the ark of the covenant. Overlaid gold. About with gold.
[2:17] Wherein was a golden pot. Of the. The had manna. And Aaron's rod. That budded. And tables of covenant. And. Over it.
[2:28] The cherubims of glory. Shadowing the mercy seat. For which we. Cannot now speak. Particularly. Now. When we. When these things. Were thus ordained.
[2:39] The priest. Went. Always. Unto the first tabernacle. Accomplishing the service of God. But into the second. Went the high priest. Alone. Once. Every year.
[2:51] Not without blood. Which he offered. For himself. And for the errors. Of the people. The holy ghost. This signifying. That the way. Into the holiest of all.
[3:01] Was not yet. Made manifest. While as the first tabernacle. Was yet standing. Which. Was a figure. Of the time. Then present. In which were offered.
[3:12] Both gifts. And sacrifices. That could be. Could not make him. That did the service. Perfect. As pertaining. To the conscience. Which stood only. In meats. And drinks.
[3:23] And divers washings. And carnal ordinances. Imposed upon them. Until the time. Of reformation. Let's stop there. So. He's saying. Look. The old testament system.
[3:35] Under Moses. The levitical system. Had a. Had a system. For worshiping God. Had a way. Of doing it. But he says. Look. Here in chapter 9.
[3:45] Of Hebrews. He said. Christ is going to bring. A better way. Christ brought. A better way. To approach God. Than was possible. Under that pattern. That Israel had. First of all.
[3:56] He talks about. The old tabernacle. And the old tabernacle. Was a. Was a method of worship. It was a. A building. For worship. Specifically. Prescribed.
[4:07] By God. God had given. To Moses. The plans for it. Being given. And the way. To do the worship. In it. And everything. But he says. It was a. Worldly. Or an earthly. Sanctuary.
[4:18] In contrast. To where Christ is now. Christ is in heaven. He's. Ministering to us. From a heavenly. Sanctuary. He's ministering to us. From a.
[4:28] Heavenly. Place. So that we can now. Worship him. In a whole. Different way. Verses. Two through five. He kind of. Explains. What the tabernacle.
[4:38] Had there. What they. The things that were in it. God had instructed Moses. He said. You construct it this way. Here's the things I want in it. And he says. There's two separate parts. There's the holy place.
[4:49] Where the priests go. And they minister. And he tells them. In there. There was a golden candlestick. There was a table of showbread. The table. Of showbread. Every Sabbath day.
[5:02] When the priest. Went in to minister. In there. There was. Twelve cakes. On the table. For the twelve tribes. Offerings. That were being given.
[5:13] To those. Along with. The blood sacrifices. That had taken place. Out in the court. And they bring the blood in there. To do. The. The offering. For sacrifice. Of blood.
[5:23] For. The forgiveness of sins. Only. The priest. Could go into the sanctuary. People. People had to stay out in the court. You could see the sacrifices made.
[5:36] But then the blood went into the sanctuary. That holy place. And then once a year. He says. The high priest goes into. The most holy place. And he gives. The sacrifice for himself.
[5:48] And for. The people. On a yearly basis. Between. Those two. There's a veil. That prevented. Anybody else.
[5:59] From going into. That. Most holy place. Only the high priest. Once a year. And inside there. It says. There's a chest. That contained three items.
[6:10] Contained a golden pot. That held manna. From their days. Within the wilderness. It held. Aaron's rod. That budded. Anybody know.
[6:21] What that's all about. You don't have to turn there. But if you want to write down. Numbers. 17. Numbers.
[6:31] Actually. 16 and 17. You remember a guy named Korah? Korah. And a group of them. Challenged. Moses and Aaron.
[6:42] About their leadership. And the fact. Why did they get this talk. Why did they get to talk to God. And all of us should be able to do that. And stuff. And you know. They're not necessarily wrong. But at that particular time.
[6:53] God said. It's going to be this way. And so they complain. And they make all kinds of noise. And they get the people riled up. And everything. And God tells Moses. Remember. Tell the people to move away from them.
[7:06] And they move away from them. And it says. The ground opened up. And Korah. And those that were following him. Got swallowed up. Now I don't know about you. But that would get my attention.
[7:17] I would stop and go. You know. This may not be the best idea. Going against these two. But did that work. No. You come to Numbers chapter 17. This was in 16.
[7:29] Numbers chapter 17. The people are complaining again. About things. To Moses and Aaron. And why did they get to do things. So then. God says. Here's what I want you to do.
[7:40] I want you to. Have the head of every tribe. And Aaron being the head of the Levites. He said. I want you to take. Every tribe. And everyone. Has a branch.
[7:51] And I want you to. Carve your name. The person who's the head of the tribe. Carve your name on the branch. And then we're going to take those branches. And we're going to put them in the tabernacle.
[8:02] Overnight. And then the next day. We're going to take those. Those branches out. Okay. So they put them in. And they take them out. Aaron's branch.
[8:13] Has his name card on it. They know it's Aaron's branch. Has budded. Here's a stick. Not attached to anything. But it has budded. Leaves are coming out.
[8:23] Blossoms are coming out. It's. Aaron's. The high priest. Aaron's the one. You listen to. Aaron's the one. That I've chosen. So. That rod.
[8:34] Of Aaron's. That budded. Was part of. Inside. That holy of holies. And then they also had. The ten commandments. The two stones. Two tablets. That had the ten commandments on it.
[8:46] That was in that. Holy of holy place as well. And then it talks about the fact. On top of the. The covenant. The. Ark of the covenant. There's a mercy seat.
[8:58] That's overseen by. Two cherubim. That are carved there. And. Those two cherubim. Made out of gold. They represent. Those who.
[9:08] Guard the presence of God. You remember in Isaiah. Isaiah says. I saw the. Lord high lifted up. And they were cherubim. And seraphim. And all. There. Watching over.
[9:20] Taking care of. And then it was also. He mentions. A golden censer. That golden censer. Was kind of. In the holy place. But would go into. The holy of holies. On that day. Of atonement.
[9:31] And would go with them. In there. There. So. Once a year. Day of atonement. When is the day of atonement? Anybody know? Last Friday.
[9:44] Last Friday. Yom Kippur. Is the day of atonement. For the Israelites. Somebody asked me. A little while ago. About the. How do people repent.
[9:57] Now that there are no sacrifices. How do the Jews repent. There are no sacrifices. So I went and looked that up again. Let's see if I remember it now. Hold your finger there in Hebrews. And go with me to Hosea.
[10:10] Hosea. Chapter 6. What they have done.
[10:25] Is that. Because they can no longer. Since 70 AD. There have not been sacrifices. Once the temple was destroyed. In 70 AD. There have not been sacrifices. Anymore. So what do they do?
[10:38] Hosea. Chapter 6. Look at verse 6. For I desired mercy. And not sacrifice. And the knowledge of God. More than burnt offerings.
[10:50] So what they do. Is they have said. We go for God's mercy. We go for God. The knowledge of God. We repent. Before God.
[11:01] So a lot of things they do. We would agree with. They just don't know Jesus. But they do it. Their repentance is like ours. We come before God.
[11:11] And repent before him. That's what they do. So. All right. Let's see. After mentioning all the furnishings. Stuff.
[11:22] What he. What he wanted to do. Is show that. How Christ is going to supersede. All of these things. He's going to talk about them. Then he's going to kind of move on. He says.
[11:33] In verse 5. He says. Look. And over it. This is back in Hebrews chapter 9. And over it. The cherubim. Is the glory shadowing the mercy seat. Of which we cannot now speak particularly.
[11:45] We're going to move on from that. Because. That's in the old. We want to head for the new. So then he comes. And he talks about. The priest. And what they did. In the.
[11:55] In verse 6. But he's moving on. He's moving on to that. To get to. What Christ did. He says in verse 7.
[12:06] He talks about that second. Chamber. Where the high priest. Would go in alone. And he would make the offering. For himself. For the heirs of the people. Then he comes to verse 8. The Holy Ghost.
[12:17] This signifying. That the way. Into the holiest of all. Was not yet made manifest. While it was. The first. While as the first tabernacle. Was yet standing.
[12:28] There was no way. To get to God. Other than. Through the veil. And through the high priest. There was no way. To get to him. Other than those things.
[12:40] You had to go through them. What changed? Well. Jesus came. The writer of Hebrews. Points out. The significance. Of this Old Testament system.
[12:50] In these verses. Go on in verse 9. He says. Which was a figure. For the time. Then present. In which were offered. Both gifts. And sacrifices.
[13:01] That could not make him. That did the service. Perfect. As pertaining. To the conscience. You could have. The covering for sin. But you weren't going to. Make your conscience clean. Because it wasn't.
[13:12] Completely forgiven. And taken care of. Verse 10. Which stood only. In meats. And drinks. And divers. Washings. And carnal ordinances. Imposed on them. Until the time.
[13:23] Of reformation. Notice just. The first two words. Of verse 11. But Christ. So he says. This was what was going on before.
[13:33] This is how you used to do things. Look at verse 9 again. He says. Which was a figure. Of the time. Then present. In which were offered. Both gifts.
[13:43] And sacrifices. That could not make him. That did the service. Perfect. As pertaining. To the conference. Conscience. What's the one big flaw. He mentions.
[13:54] In doing animal sacrifices. I kind of alluded to it. There a minute ago. You got the covering of it. You didn't get the cleansing. Of the conscience.
[14:05] It was still there. So the limitation. Of these animal sacrifices. Revealed. That there had to be. A better way. And he's going to say. Jesus is. The better way.
[14:16] Do you think. As the high priest. Did all these sacrifices.
[14:27] And everything. Do you suppose. It went through their mind. That. This was going to be. The way it would go forever. Probably.
[14:39] They probably thought. Yep. That's going to just continue. Except. When Jeremiah.
[14:50] Remember I pointed out. In Jeremiah. He said. There's going to be. A new covenant. But I don't think. Even then. They understood. Because. Look how much. They missed. About the Messiah coming. All the prophecies.
[15:01] About Jesus coming. And they missed. They missed it. He says. Okay. There's also going to be. A better sacrifice. A better sacrifice. Get it.
[15:11] When this new covenant comes. It's going to be superior. He says. Christ is going to be. A priest. Who serves. In God's.
[15:22] Greater. Heavenly. Tabernacle. What was the. One of the things. About the tabernacle. When they had it out there. In the wilderness. And when they first. Went into the promised land.
[15:34] Put it up. Take it out. Put it up. Take it out. It wasn't permanent. Now he says. Jesus. He's in a tabernacle.
[15:45] In heaven. He's got a permanent. One. Is what he's going to get at. Jesus. Has all. Notice verse 11. But Christ. Being come.
[15:57] And high priest. Of good things. To come. By a greater. And more perfect. Tabernacle. Not made with hands. That is to say. Not of this.
[16:08] Building. He says. We had a tabernacle. That made by man's hands. To God's specifications. What God wanted us to do. But it was a shadow. Of things to come. Jesus now.
[16:20] Operates from a tabernacle. That will never. Be taken down. A tabernacle. That will always. Be there. That is permanent. So unlike the high priest.
[16:31] Who offered their sacrifices. Annually. Remember they had to go in there. Once a year. To offer sacrifices. For themselves. And for the people. He says. Not anymore. Jesus came.
[16:42] With his own blood. A once for all. Offering. For sin. He came. And took care of sin. For all time. You know. Think about.
[16:54] Well. Let me do this first. Matthew chapter. 27. Verse 11. Let me read. Matthew 27. 51. Let me read the verse to you. And behold. The veil of the temple.
[17:04] Was rent. Rent. In twain. From the top. To the bottom. And the earth. Did quake. And the rocks rent. And what happened. That said.
[17:16] The Levitical system. Is done. And over with. So that. That. That curtain. Between things. Rent. From top.
[17:27] To bottom. Who rent it? God. Tore it apart. So now. You don't have that separation.
[17:38] It's only the high priest. Who can go in. And do things for sin. Now. Any priest. Can go in. And do things for sin. Well. How does that help us? Or what?
[17:51] We are priests. Bible said. We're a chosen generation. A royal priesthood. We are made priests. Now. When we come in Christ. And he says. You can come.
[18:02] Remember. It's going to say here. Later in Hebrews. About. Coming boldly. Before the throne of grace. We can go in. Because. God took that. Curtain.
[18:12] Out of the way. And made it so. We could come in. Um. Um. Um. He's a tabernacle.
[18:25] He lives within us. Or. Yeah. We said. We're the temple. And he lives within us. So. Yeah. But. In heaven. Yeah.
[18:36] It's never going to change. He's always going to be there. Making intercession for us. So. Yep. Um. Um. The animal sacrifice.
[18:47] They were used on. The day of atonement. They're done away with. Because of Jesus sacrifice. One. Another thing you find interesting. If you want to. Check it out sometime.
[18:57] Numbers. Nineteen. There was a ceremonial cleansing. That they had. It was done by the ashes. Of a red heifer. Do you know how.
[19:09] Seldom. There are. Red heifers. Because I was reading. Some about it. Heifer. You know. How they killed bulls.
[19:21] Red heifer. They would take that red heifer. They would sacrifice it. They would burn it. They would take the ashes. Put it in water. And use it for cleansing. They would come along.
[19:33] And. Give a cleansing. People. With that. But it's kind of interesting. Red heifers. As I was reading. They are. Very rare.
[19:44] So it was a. Thing that once. When they did it. They. They use it. And everything. Part of it. Somebody said. I haven't. I don't remember reading this.
[19:55] The Bible. But somebody was. That I was reading. Said. If the heifer. Had more than two. Black hairs on it. Anywhere. They couldn't use it.
[20:06] Had to be. Red. So. Anyway. Just a side note. Huh? God provided that. When it was necessary. That's right.
[20:19] They were for purification. Of the flesh. External. But. When Jesus Christ came. Died on the cross. Rose again.
[20:29] He provided. Much more. Than that. He made. It was the perfect. Sacrifice. Christ. And. His sacrifice.
[20:40] Did things. That the old covenant. Could not do. He says that. In verse. Fourteen. How much more. Shall the blood. Of Christ. Who through.
[20:50] The eternal spirit. Offered himself. Without spot. To God. Curge your conscience. From dead works. To serve. The living God. You know. Yeah.
[21:01] You would have wondered. If the. Rabbis. The. The. The. The. The. The. The. The. The. The. The. The. The. The. The. The. The. The. The. Yeah. Yeah.
[21:16] Yeah. You think about. When Jesus came. And he did that. Yeah. The priests were no longer needed. We have our own. Direct access. The money changers in the temple. Were needed.
[21:26] Because you didn't have to do the sacrifices. So. You didn't have to come and buy a sacrifice. To give to people and stuff. And. Yeah. So. There's all kinds of things that happen. But Jesus came.
[21:38] And gave. Himself. To all that believe. And he gives them. Salvation. He gives them heaven. He gives them everything. Nearly everything.
[21:56] Involved with the worship of God. In that old system. Was done away with. It was not necessary. You know. In the old system. They had to be. You know. They had to purge. Or cleanse. With blood. And everything.
[22:06] Look at verse 22. Here. In. Chapter 9. And almost all things. Are by the law. Purged with blood. Without shedding of blood.
[22:18] Is no remission. Always used to bother me. When it said. Almost all things. And then I got thinking about it. When you read through. Because I did not too long ago. Leviticus. And numbers. And all that. There are certain sacrifices.
[22:29] They could make. Where they use grain. And things like that. But most of them. Involved the blood. So I was like. Why does it say almost? But there were some. That you could use grain.
[22:40] And stuff. So. So. So. So. Anyway. It was to foreshadow. Jesus coming. And. Lastly. A better sanctuary.
[22:52] We have a better sanctuary. Look. Beginning at verse 23. Verse 23 says. It was therefore necessary. It was therefore necessary. That the pattern of things.
[23:03] In the heavens. Should be purified. With these. But the heavenly things. Themselves. With better sacrifices. Than these. For Christ is not entered. Into the holy places.
[23:14] Made with hands. Which are the figures. Of the truth. But in the heaven itself. Now to appear. In the presence of God. For us. For yet.
[23:26] I'm not. Nor yet. That he should offer himself. Often. As the priest. Entered into the. Holy place. Every year. For this. Blood of others.
[23:36] They had to go every year. Christ. One time. For then. Must he. Often. Have suffered. Since the foundation. Of the world. But now. Once. In the end of the world.
[23:47] Hath he appeared. To put away. Sin. By the sacrifice. Of himself. And as it is appointed. Unto man. Once to die. After this. The judgment. So Christ.
[23:58] Was offered. Once offered. To bear the sins. Of many. And unto them. That look up. For him. Shall he appear. The second time. Without sin.
[24:08] Unto salvation. He says. Okay. There's a different. Sanctuary. There's a different. Things that are happening. Because Christ is up there. In heaven. And he says. Look. His sacrifice.
[24:19] Is so much better. Than the sacrifices. Because he only had to do it once. He doesn't have to do it. Over and over and over again. Like they had to. He did it once. You know. Christ's ministry.
[24:33] Is not in a human tabernacle. Made with hands. As I said. He is in heaven. The Old Testament system.
[24:48] Where you had to enter. Into the Holy of Holies. Each year. With the blood. The animal sacrifices. Each year. With the blood. Christ died.
[25:00] One time. And everything. Is taken care of. Christ's death. Provided a full redemption. For sins. And he talks about that. And. Back in verse 12.
