[0:00] Hebrews chapter 10. Yeah. Hebrews chapter 10.
[0:30] All right. Hebrews chapter 10. We're talking about continuing in Christ's new and living way. We've been talking for weeks now about how Jesus is better.
[0:43] He's a better high priest. He has a better covenant. He has a better sanctuary. Just everything about him is better than the old system. And today we get to chapter 10.
[0:55] And chapter 10 is kind of a pivotal point in the book of Hebrews. Hebrews, he's going to kind of review a little bit about what has happened and where we are and how Jesus is better.
[1:06] And then we're going to move on to some other things. It's about this new and living way that Jesus has given to us. Summarizes the key doctrine, truth that, you know, the Old Testament is now obsolete.
[1:20] The Old Testament system is now obsolete. So Christians, they come to God. They come to Jesus. He has a new and living way. He's going to use that phrase as he goes through here in chapter 10.
[1:34] So he says, look, don't draw back. Don't go back to what you had before. Going backwards is not going to help you. Going backwards is not going to help you grow in your Christian life.
[1:47] Going backwards is almost a sin that will bring God's judgment. Because you're ignoring what Jesus did for you by going back. So look with me in chapter 10, beginning at verse 1.
[1:59] For the law, having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect.
[2:16] For then would they not have ceased to be offered, because that the worshipers once purged should have no more conscience of sins.
[2:28] But in those sacrifices, there is a remembrance again made of sins every year. For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.
[2:42] He says, look, he's reminding them that things are better because when Moses set up the system that they had, he was doing what God wanted him to, but it was only a shadow of things to come.
[2:59] He says, it's not the final answer. Do you notice what he said there in verse 1 again? He says, for the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things.
[3:13] He says, it was showing what's going to come. It was giving them an idea of what's to come. It was not the final answer to everything that was going to take place. He says, the sacrifice offered repeatedly show that they were only temporary.
[3:28] There was only a partial benefit to it as they did that year after year. Matter of fact, and look in verse 2 again, he says, for then would they not have ceased to be offered because that the worshipers once purged should have no more conscience of sins.
[3:44] If they were doing the perfect job, if they were taking care of the sins completely, as Jesus did, he said they wouldn't have had to keep doing the sacrifices. But they had to do the sacrifices year after year after year to keep covering the sins that they had.
[4:01] He says, look, the sacrificial system reminded the people of how sinful they were. Look at verse 3 again. For in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year.
[4:17] They were reminded every year we have to do this, we have to do this, we have to do this, we have to do this to keep those sins covered. Verse 4 again. For if it had not been possible that the blood of bulls and goats should take away sins.
[4:31] He says, the sacrifices were a mirror. They were showing what's going to come down the road, but they themselves could not cleanse sin and cleanse the conscience forever.
[4:44] So, that solution could not provide the way Jesus could. Look at verse 5. Verse 5 says, Above when he says, Sacrifices and offerings and burnt offerings and offering for sin, thou wouldest not.
[5:23] Neither hast pleasure therein which are offered by the law. Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second.
[5:37] But that which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. He says, look, Christ came and made sacrifice for us, and he did it so it's a stand alone.
[5:56] It did it once for all. It's going to last for all eternity. That way it invalidated the Old Testament system because they had to do it year after year after year.
[6:08] He says, now, once, done, over. Never let that be done again. You notice in verse 5 to 7, it says, Wherefore, when he cometh into the world, sacrifice offerings thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me.
[6:29] In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin, thou hast had no pleasure. Then said I, Lo, I come, and the volume of the book it is written of me, to do thy will, O God.
[6:43] That's a quote from Psalm 40. Psalm 40 uses those words where he talks about the fact that there's going to be something else coming. It was a prophecy about the Messiah coming and what was going to happen there in Psalm 40.
[6:58] He says, We're looking forward to the Messiah. We're looking forward to Jesus Christ coming. You know, God gave you this, but he gave you this to prepare you for the coming of the Son who would take the sins of the world on himself.
[7:15] He's going to die as our substitute. He's going to face death. And the thing about it is that death was not a tragedy.
[7:27] You know, Oh, Jesus had to die. That's too bad. He says, Nope, not a tragedy. It wasn't an afterthought. Oh, why didn't I think of this before? Can you imagine God going, setting up that whole Old Testament system and stuff, and there you go, why didn't I think of this before?
[7:43] We could have just sent Jesus. If you read through the Bible, you know there's times in there where it talks about the fact that from the foundations of the world, Jesus planned to come and take our sins on himself was set up before the foundations of the world.
[8:00] Look at verse 7 there again. It says, Then said I, Lo, I come in the volume of the book it is written of me to do thy will, O God.
[8:10] He's going to come to fulfill God's will. Hold your finger there. Go back to Acts chapter 2 with me. Acts chapter 2. Acts chapter 2.
[8:34] Look at verse, let's start at verse 22. Ye men of Israel, hear these words. Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs which God did by him in the midst of you as ye yourselves also know.
[8:53] Him being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God ye have taken and by wicked hands have crucified and slain.
[9:04] He said he was slain. He was crucified by you. Why? He says him being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God from the foundations of the world.
[9:17] Go to chapter 4 of Acts. Chapter 4 of Acts. Look at verse 27 and 28. Acts 4, 27, 28.
[9:28] For of a truth against thy holy child Jesus whom thou hast anointed both Herod and Pontius Pilate with the Gentiles and the people of Israel were gathered together.
[9:41] Okay, so you got Herod, Pilate, the Gentiles, and the people of Israel. Everybody was against him. Everybody was gathered together. Verse 28.
[9:52] For to do whatsoever thy hand and thy counsel determined before to be done. It was determined before to be done.
[10:02] See, Jesus coming and going to the cross was not an afterthought. Jesus coming and going to the cross had been determined before Adam and Eve came into existence.
[10:15] He knew how things were going to go and he was prepared for it. So, these two verses relate to the fact that he talks there in verse 7 about the fact he came to do the will of God.
[10:31] Psalm 40 when it talks about it he's talking about God's holiness and he says God's holiness was not satisfied by animals. the blood of animals being sacrificed and everything.
[10:42] Look at verse 8 again. He says above when he said sacrifice and offering burnt offerings for sin thou wouldest not neither had pleasure therein. He said nope.
[10:55] They were there to make a covering but they were not there to completely eliminate and Jesus is going to do that. And then he says in verse 9 he says then said he lo I come to do thy will O God he taketh away the first that he may establish the second.
[11:16] He took away the Old Testament sacrifices that he may establish that new covenant we talked about last week. There's now a new covenant that we go by. And he says look the priest would come and they would stand and they would make sacrifices all day long.
[11:35] and then once a year they'd go into the holiest and holies and they'd make that sacrifice but they would come and they'd make sacrifices. If you go back and you read Leviticus and you read Numbers and stuff when it talks about the tabernacle and things one of the things you'll notice when it's talking about all the things that were in there there were no chairs.
[11:56] They were busy all day long sacrifice sacrifice sacrifice sacrifice Look at verse 11 And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oft times the same sacrifices which can never take away sins They were offering sacrifices to cover sin but it says it's sometimes the same sacrifice I lied I sinned I need to make a sacrifice Oh guess what I lied again I lied again I need to you know They had to keep doing the same ones over and over and over again Look at verse 12 But this man when he had offered one sacrifice for sins forever sat down on the right hand of God The priest in the tabernacle no sitting down constantly sacrifice sacrifice
[13:01] Jesus comes and does it once and he sits down at the right hand of God Think about the difference again between the Levitical and the Melchizedek order of priests Christ offered himself once the final perfect sacrifice for sins forever and because there is no more sacrifice to be made Jesus can sit down and say it's done and over Now the Bible says he's constantly making intercession for us I always think of it this way Job talks about Satan went in to make accusations and stuff I picture Satan Steve did you see what Steve did do you see what Steve's been doing and what he's been you need to take care of that Jesus is sitting there in the right hand of the father going my sacrifice took care of that sin it's all done it's under the blood and washed away but did you say it doesn't matter it's done it's gone so Jesus is there making intercession for us all the time you know it's interesting when you think about look at verse 12 and 14 again 12 says but this man after he had offered one sacrifice for sins forever sat down at the right hand of God verse 12 14 for by one offering he hath perfected forever them that are sanctified okay he says he did it once he sat down he did it once it was perfected forever remember when Jesus was on the cross
[14:48] John chapter 19 you don't have to turn there John chapter 19 verse 30 when Jesus therefore had received the vinegar he said it is finished and he bowed his head and gave up the ghost it is finished think about that in relation to these two verses 12 and 14 when Jesus came he says it's finished that was mine sorry it is finished and he said why because he did one sacrifice for sins forever and sat down because he perfected everything that needed to be perfected it is done it is finished we're done with all these sacrifices and everything okay yeah look at verse 13 from henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool he says okay you know what there's one sacrifice for sins forever and he sat down from henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool what's going to become of
[16:07] Christ's enemies basically they're going to be trodden underfoot they're not going to be able to stand up against him I was in a conversation with some people the other few days ago you know Satan and his band and all of those are heading for the lake of fire they're not going to be able to come against him anymore you know think about the word picture here that has been given the fact that Christ is sitting on his throne and Satan and all those who come against him underneath his feet never to come and rise up again wow just amazing when you stop and think by one act of sacrifice he has perfected everything so his priestly work of salvation he's told us is the basis for this new covenant so the covenant was prophesied remember we talked about that in the old testament they told us in the old testament there was going to be a new one again let me show you just one more time go back to jeremiah chapter 31 jeremiah 31 jeremiah 31 beginning at verse 31 jeremiah 31 beginning at verse 31 it says behold the days come saith the lord that i will make a new covenant with the house of israel and with the house of judah not according to the covenant that i made with their fathers and the day that i took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of egypt which my covenant they break although it was i was a husband unto them saith the lord but this shall be the covenant that i will make with the house of israel after those days saith the lord i will put my law in their inward parts and write it in their hearts and will be their god and they shall be my people and they shall teach no more every man his neighbor and every man his brother saying know the lord for they shall all know me from the least of them unto the greatest of them saith the lord for i will forgive their iniquities and i will remember their sin no more he says there's going to be a new covenant and the sin is going to be put away he says it's gone not to be remembered anymore look at verse 17 of
[18:52] Hebrews 10 back in Hebrews 10 verse 17 it says and their sins and iniquities will i remember no more now here's a question for you can god be god and forget things because he knows everything so i would say i don't know i gotta think about that can he forget things but if he can't then what does that those verses mean he won't hold it against us okay he can choose not to bring it up not to remember dana remember the verse that says he puts them as far as the east is from the west so it's out there somewhere but not in his immediate purview he doesn't bring it up he doesn't remember it he doesn't you know somebody i was listening to preach one time and they said when you go to christ and you ask for forgiveness of sin i did something and i asked god to forgive me of this sin i come back to him tomorrow and it's still bothering me on my conscience and stuff and i go god i'm so sorry for that sin god's gonna go what's in it's already been done already gone you already confessed it it's as far as the east is from the west what's in you talking about see that's the point yeah yeah that could be yeah yeah yeah if you thought that you can.
[21:41] Yep. And that shows you truly did to this person. Yep. And, okay, go ahead. In 1 Corinthians chapter 13, verse 5, it says, does not behave itself unseemly.
[21:58] Seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked. Thinketh no evil. The thinketh no evil is hold no grudge. Yep. And so God doesn't hold grudges against us. Right. Okay.
[22:10] So, yeah, God puts it as far as the east is from the west. Doesn't hold. So, basically, he doesn't remember it anymore. I mean, it's still there. You know, God's not going to forget, but it's out there.
[22:26] It's not something he's going to bring up ever again. We do, like you said. We don't forgive ourselves. There's things that we, you know, we do, and we just, and some of them, you know, 20, 30 years ago, and they're still there.
[22:43] And God's like, what are you talking about? We get it here. God's like, nope. Okay. Okay. Okay. Second thing here we need. We're going to run out of time here.
[22:55] Christ's new way has come. Christ's new way has come. Look at me, beginning of verse 19. Verse 19 says, Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us through the veil, that is to say, his flesh.
[23:24] And having a high priest over the house of God, let us draw near. Let's stop there. He's like making an appeal on this new covenant that he has given to us.
[23:40] He's saying, look, I want you to remember two things about what Jesus has done. I want you to remember two things about this new way he's given to you. First of all, he says, there's a boldness.
[23:52] We can come into the presence of God with boldness. Now, we don't think of that. We think of, you know, I'm coming before God. I need to be humble. And we do.
[24:04] But we also need to come with the attitude, this is my father. How do you come before your father? Remember back in chapter 4?
[24:16] You remember chapter 4 where it says there in verse, whoops, too far. Where it says in verse 16, let us therefore come boldly under the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
[24:35] He says you can come boldly. Remember last week we were talking about the fact that that middle wall between the holy place and the most holy place, that curtain was ripped from the top to the bottom.
[24:46] God, it says come. You can come to me and talk to me. We don't have to go through some mediator. We don't have to go through a priest.
[24:57] You don't have to come to me for confession. You go boldly before the throne of grace. Like the kings in the Old Testament, nobody could go in to see him like Esther.
[25:10] Unless he extended his scepter. You weren't supposed to go. You should invite it. But God is saying here, no, you come boldly. You come boldly. Don't be hesitant.
[25:21] You come. You talk to me. And let's take care of whatever the matter is. It's so great the fact that we can come before him boldly.
[25:34] He says there, a new and living way. Remember, they had to come through the priest, through the sacrifices, all of those things. He said, no, no, no, not anymore. A new and living way.
[25:48] What does he say in Romans chapter 12 about us offering ourselves? A living sacrifice. Dead things don't do a lot of good. Dead things just kind of are there.
[26:02] Dana? Say that again. That's true.
[26:16] Sometimes living sacrifices kind of roll themselves off the altar. Yep. So, but he says, offer yourself a living sacrifice, not one that's dead. He says, look, we need to make sure that we remember Jesus was the sacrifice.
[26:33] He shed his blood. He allowed his flesh to be pierced. Now we have a boldness to come before him because he asked us to. Verses 19 and 20.
[26:45] Again, it says, having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way, which he has consecrated for us through the veil, that is to say, his flesh.
[27:00] How do we show appreciation for Christ's work that allows us to come into the throne room?
[27:11] Let me say that again. How do we show appreciation to Christ for what he has done for us that allows us to come into the throne room?
[27:22] Living for him. Living for him. Living for him. Okay. Doing the things that he taught us in his words to show his love.
[27:35] Okay. Showing things to the world. Jared? Being a blessing.
[27:45] Okay. Okay. Okay.
[27:57] He loves him. Keep his commandments. Yep. It says to draw near to him in verse 22. I thought of it this way.
[28:09] He has opened up the access for us to come. So how do we show appreciation for it? We actually come. We actually come to his presence.
[28:22] Which means what? We're going to spend time in prayer. We're going to spend time talking with him. We're going to come to him whenever there's things that are going on in our life. He says come boldly.
[28:33] So if he's given me that access, I need to come. He says later on here in chapter 10, verse 25, about not forsaking the assembling of yourselves together.
[28:46] When we come together, what are we doing? We're coming to worship him. We're coming into his presence. He says do it boldly. Things of that nature.
[28:56] He has given us access. Do we take advantage of the access? Do we show appreciation by actually doing what he's given us to do?
[29:09] Going in before him. And then the second thing he mentions in verse 21, he says, and having a high priest over the house of God.
[29:20] We've been talking about Jesus being a new high priest. He is now the high priest. He is the perfect high priest. Again, better sacrifice, better covenant, better everything. So we come before him.
[29:32] In those three verses, he's actually kind of giving us a nutshell summary of everything he's been talking about in Hebrews. You have this because of what Jesus did for you.
[29:47] The old covenant didn't give you that. The new covenant does. He says you have a boldness. And then he's going to get into verses 22 and following.
[29:58] And he's going to use three different verses where he says, let us. We'll talk about that next week. What is it we get to do because of what Christ has done for us? Okay.
[30:09] So we'll look at that next week. Let's pray. Let's pray. Let's pray. Let's pray. Let's pray. Let's pray. Let's pray. Let's pray.
[30:19] Let's pray. Let's pray. Let's pray.
