[0:00] me to Luke 22. Luke 22. Not a normal place that we look for a message on communion and the Lord's table, but it is in Luke, so we're going to take a look at it today. You know, how's your memory? Some people chuckle about their memory. Earl came in this morning and he was having trouble remembering names, or at least pretending to. I was talking to Ian the other night, and Ian was racking his brain trying to remember somebody's name and things, and he's still in high school. All of us that are older, he's still in high school, and he's like, oh, what is that name?
[0:52] He was trying to remember somebody. We have trouble with our memory sometimes, don't we? They even have seminars and things to help improve your memory. They sell products on TV to help your memory. Reminds me of a story of a man. He and his neighbor were conversing over the fence in the backyard, and the man was telling the neighbor that he had just gone to a seminar the day before on how to improve your memory. The man, the neighbor was like, oh, really? He said, what was the speaker's name? Well, his name was, what's that flower that smells good and pretty, has thorns and stuff? You mean Rose? Hey, Rose, what was that speaker's name?
[1:39] Didn't do a lot for him, but he still had, you know, he still had memory problems. We have memory problems sometimes, but God is so great. God has given us ways to remember. You remember Jacob, and he saw the vision of the ladder going up to heaven, the stairway going up and down to heaven. After that was over, the next morning, he named that place Bethel, house of God, to remember what had happened there. When the Israelites passed over the Jordan and came to Gilgal, they built an altar to remember that this was the first time they were going to worship God in their new promised land. It was going to be there forever as a reminder of God bringing them in.
[2:34] In the New Testament, God's going to do the same thing. Look with me hearing Luke chapter 22, beginning at verse 14. It says, And when the hour was come, he sat down and the twelve apostles with him. And he said unto them, With desire I have desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. For I say unto you, I will not any more eat thereof until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God. And he took the cup and he gave thanks and said, Take this and divide it among yourselves. For I say unto you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God shall come. And he took bread and gave thanks and break it and said unto them, This is my body which is given for you, this do in remembrance of me. Likewise, also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the New Testament in my blood, which is shed for you. But behold, the hand of him that betrayeth me is with me on the table. And truly the Son of Man goeth. For it was determined, but woe unto that man by whom he is betrayed. You notice, those of you who were with me in Sunday school, you notice what it said there in verse 22. And truly the Son of Man goeth as it was determined.
[4:08] We talked about Acts 2. By the determinant and foreknowledge of God, Jesus Christ went to the cross. Acts chapter 4. It was determined.
[4:20] That he was going to do this. God and Jesus before the foundations of the world had a plan in place for the salvation of mankind. Jesus was going to go to that cross. He was going to pay the price for our sins.
[4:35] He was going to give himself for us. God knows that our memories are short. And he has provided a way. Notice it says there in verse 19.
[4:48] This is my body which is given for you. This do in remembrance of me. The whole meal, the whole Lord's table is a reminder of what Jesus has done for us.
[5:03] Why do you preach? When you preach communion, you have communion services. You preach communion over and over and over and over. We've heard this.
[5:14] We know this. We understand this. Why do you do that? This do in remembrance of me. If I don't do this, how long before we forget what he has done for us?
[5:28] Let's have a word of prayer and we'll talk about this Lord's table. Father, I prayed this morning that we would never forget.
[5:39] But Lord, I know us. I know humans. We tend to forget things. We tend to forget things pretty quick, pretty rapidly. Lord, I pray that you would just be with us this morning as we're reminded once again what Jesus did for us at the cross.
[5:58] When he gave his life. When he paid the price for our sin. When he rose again giving us victory. Lord, I just pray that you would help us to be reminded once more of the love that you had for us.
[6:14] Of the penalty that sin carries with it. And how you have paid that penalty because of your love for us. Lord, help us today to be reminded of the great God who could have just gone on and left things and not cared.
[6:38] But while we were yet sinners, you died for us. You loved us. Lord, minister to our hearts this morning. We pray in Jesus' name. Amen.
[6:50] First thing I want you to see this morning, the bread. The bread reminds us of the cost of sin. Bread reminds us of the cost of sin. Hold your finger there in Luke and turn with me over to Isaiah 53.
[7:08] Isaiah 53. It's a familiar passage. You all know it, but I want you to look at it with me. Isaiah 53. Jesus said, this is my body which is given for you.
[7:21] What does that mean? He gave his body. Oh, yeah, he went to the cross. He was nailed to a cross. And, you know, uh-huh. Look at Isaiah 53 and his description of what Jesus is going to go through.
[7:36] Beginning at verse 3. Isaiah 53.3 says, He was wounded for our transgressions.
[8:09] He was bruised for our iniquities. The chastisement of our peace was upon him, and with his stripes we are healed. Stop there for a minute. Look at those words in that verse again.
[8:23] Wounded. Bruised. Chastisement. Stripes. It wasn't just the fact that Jesus was nailed to the cross. That was bad enough.
[8:34] But he went through so many things before that. The beatings that he took. Before he ever got to being nailed on the cross. The things that he faced.
[8:46] That crown of thorns upon his head. That cat of nine tails across his back. All of those things he did for us. Verse 6. All we like sheep have gone astray.
[8:58] We have turned everyone to his own way. And the Lord had laid on him the iniquity of us all. He went through all of that torture. All of that punishment. And what does it say?
[9:10] We like sheep have gone astray. We turned everyone to his own way. We didn't care. Didn't make a difference to us. He did all of that. We went our own way.
[9:21] And we helped other people go their own way. Verse 7. He was oppressed. And he was afflicted. Yet he opened not his mouth. He is brought as a lamb to the slaughter.
[9:33] And as a sheep before her shears is dumb. So he opened not his mouth. What he went through. The things that he faced.
[9:46] Reminds us. There is a cost. To sin. Why did Jesus die? Why did he undergo all that suffering? Why did he endure all those things?
[10:01] Because of a thing called sin. Sin. Had to be paid for. Sin. Had to go. Had to have a punishment. Sin.
[10:13] Is an affront to a holy God. He says. Sin. Has to be paid for. It reminds us. There is a cost. Sin. Sin. To sin. You know.
[10:26] We know. That there is a right and a wrong. We teach our kids that. We know that. But. Jesus came to pay.
[10:40] Christ. For something. We did. We neglected him. We. Are the ones who sinned. We're the ones. Who left God. And instead of following him as we should.
[10:53] We left and went our own way. So here's Jesus. Again. Think about this too. Who's Jesus? He's the creator. Of all. I will tell us.
[11:05] He created everything. Including us. And yet we turn on him. He is the son of God. Think about that.
[11:19] He is the son of God. And we turned our back on him. We're coming up on Christmas. You remember. Christmas. In the Bible.
[11:32] What did the angels do. The night that Jesus was born. They sang praises. To him. What did angels do. Before Jesus was born.
[11:44] Isaiah 53. Isaiah 6. Holy. Holy. Holy. Is the Lord of hosts. They sang praises to him. All of heaven.
[11:56] Worshipped him. He left all of that. And he came down to earth. Why? Well.
[12:07] I created that earth. And that earth down there. Is pretty nice. I kind of like that. I did a good job down there. I think I'll take a vacation. And I'll go down there. And enjoy. You know. My version of Florida.
[12:19] Down there. I always have a good time. Nope. That's not why he came. You know. Well. I created all those people. And they're down there.
[12:29] And you know. I've been around the angels. For a long. Long. Long time. I could use some new friends. So I came down to earth. To make some new friends. And. Just have some good fellowship.
[12:43] No. Why did he come. To this earth. Because there's a thing called sin. And it had to be paid for.
[12:54] There's a thing called sin. And we can't. Come up with a way. For forgiveness on our own. Jesus came. You know the old saying. Yeah. He. He paid a debt.
[13:07] He did not owe. That's what he came to do. He paid a debt. He did not owe. Think about. How rampant is sin.
[13:19] In our world. First Corinthians. 6. Verses 9 and 10. Know ye not. That the unrighteous. Shall not inherit. The kingdom of God.
[13:30] We can't get into the kingdom of God. We can't have any part of the kingdom of God. If we're unrighteous. And he goes on. He says. Be not deceived. Neither fornicators. Nor idolaters. Nor adulterers.
[13:41] Nor effeminate. Nor abusers of themselves. With mankind. Nor thieves. Nor covetous. Nor drunkards. Nor revilers. Nor extortioners. Shall inherit. The kingdom of God. You say.
[13:52] That's not me. I'm not a foreigner. Caterer. I idolater. You know. All of those different things mentioned there. Can I back up to one of those? Covetous. Have you ever been covetous?
[14:06] Have you ever wished. Oh I wish I had that. Why do those people get that? Why do they get this? Why does that guy get to have the Mercedes and not me? Why does that guy get to have that house and not me?
[14:17] Why does. Have we ever been covetous? Because. I'll show you some more in a minute. See. This world. This. This world is just filled with sin. You hear me say this often.
[14:29] Turn on the news at night. How much sin. Do you see. In this world. Pick up a newspaper. Anybody buy a newspaper? Pick up your.
[14:41] Your computer. Or your tablet. Or your phone. And look on. The internet. Is there sin? Sin. It is rampant. In this world. Regardless of what people claim.
[14:55] You know. The things they say. The feel. They think. Or anything like that. Sin is sin. Whether they say it's okay or not. Sin is sin. God. Proclaimed.
[15:08] What is sin? And what is. And he says. There is sin. Just rampant out there. Take your Bible once more. I'm going to. A couple of these longer ones. I did not put on the screen.
[15:19] So. Go with me to Romans chapter 1. Romans chapter 1. Romans chapter 1. Beginning at verse 28.
[15:31] It says. And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge. God gave them over to a reprobate mind. To do those things which are inconvenient.
[15:43] Stop there for a second. They didn't want to retain God in their mind. How does that sound in today's world? They don't want God in their mind.
[15:53] They don't want to even hear about God. I don't want to think about God. I just want to live my life the way I want to. He goes on in verse 29. Of Romans 1.
[16:05] Being filled with all unrighteousness. Fornication. Wickedness. Covetousness. Maliciousness. Full of envy. Murder. Debate. Deceit.
[16:16] Malignity. Whisperers. Backbiters. Haters of God. Despiteful. Proud. Boasters. Inventors of evil things. Disobedient to parents. Without understanding.
[16:26] Covenant breakers. Without natural affection. Implacable. Unmerciful. Who knowing the judgment of God. That they which commit such things.
[16:37] Are worthy of death. Not only do the same. But have pleasure in them that do them. Notice what he said in this one. Again we say.
[16:48] Ah. That's not me. Look at all those different. I'm not. What kind of person do you think I am? But he mentions whisperers and backbiters. Gossips. Proud.
[17:01] Are we proud? He says. Not only. Do they do those things. But they take pleasure in those that do them.
[17:13] People do things and we. Kind of like. Oh. That's okay. That's the world we live in. Yes. It is the world we live in.
[17:24] But it still doesn't make it right. He says. Sin is sin. And there's a cost to it. And you know. And before we get too proud. Thinking. Oh. Well I don't do those type of things.
[17:38] Look at the list. There's things in there. We absolutely hate. There are things in that list. That we think are just. Absolutely terrible. And they are sin.
[17:49] And we should think that they're terrible. There are people who. Are involved in. The gay rights movement. There are people who have sins of their own.
[18:00] That they are tempted. To do. But he also mentions things like. Lying. Politicians do that every day. Don't they? We got an election coming up on Tuesday.
[18:13] They do that every day. How about. Like I mentioned. Gossip. Pride. Sometimes we think.
[18:26] Because we look at that list. And we. We. Major on the. The big things there. We think. You know what. I'm better than so many other people.
[18:37] Don't ever think that. Just because you don't practice. Their particular sin. There's other ones in there. That mentioned it. Hey. We do. My gossip.
[18:48] And things like that. And the neat thing is. Well. Maybe not the neat thing. The interesting thing is. When Jesus was here on earth. Who did he reserve his most.
[19:02] His toughest. Criticism for. The religious people. Didn't he? We need to be so very careful.
[19:13] Because sometimes we. Put ourselves up on a pedestal. Thinking we're so much better than those other people. No. We're sinners. Just like they are. We. We sin. And we do things that are wrong.
[19:25] And. We need to be so very careful. Of that. Another thing. That happens sometimes. Is the fact that. I don't do the sin that they do.
[19:38] And because I don't do the sin that they do. I kind of. Put them on a. A different plane. And then we even get to the point.
[19:49] Where we hate them. They do this sin. I can't believe somebody would do that kind of sin. And we just kind of build up this hate. Toward people. I think the last time I looked in the Bible.
[20:02] Hates the sin. You know. So we need to be careful. As Christians. Make sure that we do. What God wants us to do. How God wants us to do it. There is a right and a wrong.
[20:14] There is things such as sin. And sin. Has a terrible cost to it. But we have to remember. Just because I don't.
[20:24] Do the sin they do. I'm no better. Because I'm a sinner. Saved by grace. And Jesus says. Look. When you eat this bread. I want you to remember.
[20:37] I went to that cross for you. I want you to remember. That I went to pay the price for sin. I went to pay for that cost that was there. Which brings us to the second point.
[20:50] The cup. Reminds us of God's forgiveness and love. The cup reminds us of God's forgiveness and love. Luke 22 verse 20. Likewise also the cup.
[21:01] After supper saying. The cup is the new testament in my blood. Which is shed for you. It reminds us that he went to that cross. He shed that blood.
[21:12] For you. What does the Bible say about. Without the shedding of blood. There's no remission. We've all sinned. We've all gone astray.
[21:23] We've all. Have. Cost Jesus. That terrible price for sin. Because we're sinners. But the cup reminds us.
[21:34] That he is willing to forgive. He came and shed his blood. So that we could have forgiveness. He came and shed his blood. So that it could be washed away. You know.
[21:47] After. Listing all those sins there. In 1 Corinthians 6. Then you come to verse. 1 Corinthians 6 verse 11. Notice what he says.
[21:59] And such were some of you. You know. I'd almost change that. I'm not going to change God's word. But I'd almost change that. And such were all of you.
[22:12] We were all sinners. But then he goes on and says. But. You are washed. But. You are sanctified. But.
[22:23] You are justified. In the name of the Lord Jesus. And by the spirit. Of our God. He says. It has been washed away. The sin has been washed away.
[22:34] You've been sanctified. Cleansed. Made holy. Separated under God. And you have been justified. You are now just as if you had never sinned. It has all been taken care of.
[22:47] Because Jesus Christ came. And shed his blood. On the cross. It reminds us. Of God's forgiveness. That Jesus blood. Could do that.
[22:58] Take away. All of that. You're made whole. You're made clean. It also reminds us. Of God's love. Most famous verse.
[23:09] Everybody who doesn't even go to church knows. John 3.16. For God so loved the world. Why did Jesus come? Because there's a cost to sin.
[23:20] Why did Jesus come? Because God so loved the world. That he gave his only begotten son. And whosoever believeth in him. Should not perish. But have everlasting life.
[23:30] He came so that we could have everlasting life. Sin should cause us to die. Sin should send us to hell.
[23:42] Sin should just wipe us from the presence of God. For all eternity. But because of sin. Jesus came. And because of sin. Jesus shed his blood.
[23:53] Sin should be. Because God loves us. I prayed a minute ago. And said. But God committed his love toward us. And while we were yet sinners. Christ died for us.
[24:05] You know. He didn't wait for us to get better. He didn't wait for us to clean ourselves up. He didn't wait for us to see how good we could become on our own. He gave himself for us.
[24:18] While we were yet sinners. You ever stop and think. What's the difference between us and sinners? We're all sinners. But between a saint and a sinner. What's the difference?
[24:31] Well. One group admits their sin. Is sorry for their sin. Repented of their sin. And asked God. To forgive their sin.
[24:44] The other group. Denies that they're doing anything wrong. They're not doing sin. And they make excuses. Or they make excuses for it. You know.
[24:56] I did this. And I did this. Because of. It's not my fault. No. We are all sinners. But the saint recognizes.
[25:08] That I did it. I need God's forgiveness. What's another difference between a saint and a sinner? The destination. A saint. Is going to spend eternity with God in heaven.
[25:23] Sinner. Is going to spend eternity apart from God. In hell. He says. Look. There is a difference. Between Satan and sinner. You want Jesus Christ in your life.
[25:35] That blood that Jesus shed. Gives you the opportunity. To be different. And then the third thing. Real quick. Kind of doesn't seem like it goes with this outline.
[25:47] But. We must be going. We must be going. Did you notice. What he said there. Verse 22.
[26:04] And truly the son of man. Goeth. As it was determined. What does he mean by that? The fact that Jesus Christ. Went from heaven.
[26:15] To earth. He went. From heaven. To pay the price. Of our sin. He came. He paid that cost. He showed us love. And forgiveness. He was also willing.
[26:27] To go to that cross. For us. He was willing to go. For us. He was willing.
[26:38] To come here. He was willing. To endure all the different things. And he says. Look. Remember. What I have done for you. I love.
[26:50] You. I love. Sinners. I love. The world. How do we. Handle. The world.
[27:00] That's around us. Do we show them. The love. Of Christ. See. We're supposed to go. Out. Into the world. And show them.
[27:11] The love of Christ. We're supposed to go out. Into the world. And tell them. Of. The love. Of Christ. He says. You go out. In those different groups. I mentioned earlier. He said.
[27:22] You show them love. You go out. And. Those who slander you. And despitefully. You show them love. You go out. And show them.
[27:33] Me. Because. Sin has a price. There's love. Available. To them. Go. And show it. To them.
[27:44] He says. Look. These folks. Out here in the world. They're not our enemies. We're not fighting. A physical battle. Against them. Sometimes. We think we are.
[27:56] Sometimes. You know. We get kind of. Wrapped up in things. And. We're fighting against. Evil. We're fighting against this. We're fighting against that. But we. We. We view it.
[28:09] We view it as. We're fighting against. This group. And that group. And these people. What does Ephesians 6. 12 say. For we wrestle not. Against flesh and blood. But against principalities.
[28:21] Against powers. Against the rules. Of the darkness. Of this world. Against spiritual wickedness. In high places. These people. Are trapped in their sins. The devil has them. We're not fighting against them.
[28:31] We're fighting against the devil. We're fighting against. What he has caused. This world to be. You know. They're. They're blinded by him. He's caused it. You know.
[28:41] So much noise around them. That they're deaf. To hearing. The things of God. We. Have to go. And show them. The love of Christ. You know.
[28:54] I don't know how many of you. Were saved. When you were older. But. If you were saved. When you were a little bit older. God loved you. In spite. Of the things.
[29:05] That you have done. And you got saved. Because of his love. Being shown to you. By him. By his spirit. By someone around you. He says.
[29:17] We need to go out. And do the same thing. We need to go. And show them. Again. What we're going to do here. In a few minutes. Shows us. That there's a high price.
[29:28] To sin. It shows us. That God's love. Is. Infinite. His forgiveness. Is available. To anyone. Him. It also reminds us.
[29:40] He was willing to go. To the cross. For us. He says. Look. Do this. In remembrance. Of me. What are we remembering?
[29:51] What I have just talked about. We're remembering. That Christ came. Because of sin. Christ came. Because he loved us. Christ came.
[30:02] Because he wanted to make. Available to the world. Christ came. Because he wanted. Those of us. Who accept him. To go. And take his message. To the world. We have.
[30:12] An opportunity. This morning. To remember. What Jesus did. We have an opportunity. To take.
[30:24] What he did. Dwell on it. Think on it. Remember it. And rejoice in it. Jesus Christ.
[30:36] Loved. Me. Loved me. Enough. To do all of this. The Bible tells us.
[30:47] In. First Corinthians. Chapter 11. That when they came. To do this. They came. To the Lord's table. To have communion. They were to.
[31:01] Examine themselves. He says. Look. I want you. To take time. To stop. And to look at yourself. I want you. To take time. To stop.
[31:11] And say. Is there anything. In my life. That should not be there. Christ came. To pay the price. He came. To wash it away. So is there anything. In my life.
[31:21] That should not be there. Right now. So before I take this. He says. Examine yourself. To make sure. Your life is. What it should be.
[31:32] Based on what Christ. Has done for you. Remember. Him. So we're going to take time. Right now. To do that. We're going to remember. What Jesus has done. We're going to look at our lives.
[31:44] And we're going to say. God. Is there anything. In my life. That needs to be taken care of. Anything in my life. That I need to get rid of. Anything in my life. That I need to confess. Before.
[31:55] I come. And remember. Everything. That you have done for me. Or as I remember. Everything you've done for me. Help me to be clean. Before you. This morning. So I'm going to ask you.
[32:06] To take time. Right now. To just examine. Yourself. Through. Through. Through. Through. Through. Through.
[32:20] Through. Through. Through. Through. Through. Through. Through. Through.
[32:36] Through. Thank you.
[33:09] Thank you.
[33:39] Heavenly Father, we just thank you that Jesus would come and die for us.
[33:54] That he would come and pay the price for our sin. He would come and take the beatings that he took, the nails that he took.
[34:05] That he would go through all of that to pay the price of that sin because you love us. Lord, help us to take that to heart.
[34:18] You loved us. You asked us to accept the gift that you've given to us. We didn't have to do anything other than believe you to have the salvation that we have.
[34:34] And the only thing you ask us to do is to remember. Lord, I thank you for the body that was broken for us. Thank you for the bread that reminds us of that broken body.
[34:48] Lord, as we go into our communion time now, Lord, I pray that you would just help us to remember. Remember with hearts of love.
[35:00] Remember with hearts heavy because of what you have done for us. Hearts of rejoicing because of what you have done for us.
[35:14] Lord, minister during this communion time. May we be reminded of the great God we have. We pray this in Jesus' name. Amen.
[35:33] And Jesus, God bless you and comment and pray after our is lessons toolbook.

[36:33] Amen. Amen.
[37:12] Bible says, and we did given thanks. He break it and said, take eat. This is my body which is broken for you. This do in remembrance of me.
[37:33] Amen. You want to pray for the blood of the shed?
[38:00] Father, just thank you so very much. Lord, for this great reminder of your blood that you shed for us.
[38:11] God, we just thank you so very much for the fact that your blood cleanses, Lord, and washes. It reconciles, Lord.
[38:24] It brings us to you. Lord, we just thank you so very much that you're purified. Lord, we thank you for this great reminder of your great love for us.
[38:38] Father, we are not worthy. I am not worthy. So, Father, we will draw on you and see your blood and to calm the forgiveness of sin.
[38:49] Thank you, God, and that the love for the time and that you have caught in Jesus' name. Amen. . . .
[39:26] . . .
[39:56] . . . . . .
[40:28] . . . . . . . . . .
[40:40] . . .
[40:56] . . You know, when you stop and you think about this time, the cost of sin, Jesus paid the price.
[41:12] The forgiveness that we have through his love is possible because Jesus paid the price. The fact that we can be saved and go out is because Jesus paid the price.
[41:26] 355 in your hymn book, 255. Jesus paid it all. And let's stand.
[41:45] I hear the Savior say, I stray, indeed it is small.
