[0:00] Go with me to Galatians chapter 3. Galatians chapter 3. Last week we began talking about Galatians chapter 3.
[0:20] We did the first five verses. Paul's writing to them and he's saying, Oh foolish Galatians! That's how he starts off chapter 3. Not a good way to start. But he starts talking about the foolishness.
[0:34] That they had heard the gospel. They had believed the gospel. And now they were being convinced by others to go back to a works based salvation. He says you believe the gospel of grace.
[0:47] You believe what God has done for you. Matter of fact, look at verse 2. He says, This only would I learn of you. Received you the spirit by the works of the law?
[0:58] Or by the hearing of faith? How did you get saved? How did you get the Holy Spirit into your life? Did you do it by doing things? Or by believing that Jesus Christ died on the cross for you and saved you from your sin?
[1:11] How did you get the spirit to come live within you? He goes on today. We're going to be looking at starting at verse 6. And he's getting to the crux of the issue here.
[1:23] Of this issue that they've had. As far as is it by works or is it by grace? How do we get saved? How do we keep our salvation? Is it by works or is it by faith?
[1:35] He says, look, faith is so important. Understanding faith is so important. And he's going to take them right back to the very beginning of their nation.
[1:50] Right back to the very beginning of their faith. Abraham. Look with me at verse 6. Verse 6 says, Stop right there for a second.
[2:07] We're going to go further, but stop right there for a second. Again, let's have a word of prayer. Father, I pray that you would help us now. As we look at this passage of scripture.
[2:18] Lord, open our hearts. Open our minds. Open us to the teaching of the Holy Spirit. Your word says the Spirit will guide us in all truth. Lord, I pray that you would help us today to listen to what your word and the Holy Spirit say to us.
[2:37] Lord, help us to listen to the things that you're trying to teach us. The importance of salvation by grace through faith alone.
[2:50] Lord, help us to learn today. Help us to be strengthened today in our beliefs. We pray this in Jesus' name.
[3:01] Amen. He says, first of all, you need to go back to Abraham and understand the faith of Abraham. The faith of Abraham. It says there in verse 6, Even as Abraham believed.
[3:15] Did you catch that? Abraham believed. Those of you who were in Sunday school this morning, We talked from Hebrews chapter 11. We referred back to Genesis chapter 12.
[3:29] Genesis chapter 12. Let me read the first three verses again. It says this, Now the Lord said unto Abraham, Get thee now out of thy country, And from thy kindred, And from thy father's house, Unto a land that I will show thee.
[3:44] And I will make of thee a great nation. And I will bless thee. And make thy name great. And thou shalt be a blessing. And I will bless them that bless thee.
[3:55] I will curse them that curseeth thee. And in thee shall all the families of the earth be blessed. Abraham, I'm going to use you. Abraham, I'm going to bless you.
[4:09] Abraham, you follow me. You live according to my word. You trust me. And the things that I'm saying to you, The things I'm telling you. He said, And you will be used to bless all the nations of the earth.
[4:23] All the families of the earth. Wow. Abraham, what do you have to do in order to be a blessing? Listen to me and follow me. Christian, what do you have to do in order to be a blessing?
[4:36] Listen to him and follow him. That's it. We try to make things so difficult in days. Listen to him and follow him. Wow. That's pretty simple. No, it's not.
[4:48] But it's all that we have to do. What happens if we do that? Verse 6 again. Even as Abraham believed God, And it was accounted to him for righteousness.
[5:00] He believed God, And it was accounted to him for righteousness. Abraham received imputed righteousness. Matter of fact, that was Genesis 12.
[5:11] I was reading those verses to you. Genesis 15, verse 6. Does that sound familiar? And he believed in the Lord, And he counted it to him for righteousness. Believing God, I counted to him for righteousness.
[5:28] What do I have to do in order to gain God's favor? Believe. Doesn't say anything about doing any works. Doesn't say anything about me going out and trying to earn my way.
[5:40] Doesn't say anything. He says, believe. Believe and it was accounted to him. See, the Old Testament saints, like Abraham, They got saved in the same way we do.
[5:52] How do we get saved? Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved. That's what the Bible says, right? He says, believe. How did Abraham have salvation?
[6:04] How did Abraham have righteousness? He believed. If that was all it took in the Old Testament time, What should it take in the New Testament time? Believe.
[6:15] What should it take in the 21st century? Believe. He says, believe. And it's counted unto you for righteousness. Believe.
[6:26] And you have the salvation that you're looking for. That word accounted Means to be placed on our account to reckon. We, weekly, bi-weekly, Take our checkbook.
[6:41] And we reckon it. You know what reckoning your checkbook is? Make sure it balances, right? Does the bank and what we have line up? Because if it doesn't, that's a bad thing.
[6:53] Unless they have more than we do, Then that's a good thing. But every once in a while that happens. But does it line up? And he says, Abraham, Abraham, You got to line up with God Because of your belief In who he was And who he is doing, What he is doing In your life.
[7:13] Why is this so important? Well, What have we been talking about Here through the book of Galatians? We've been talking about These Judaizers Who were coming in And they were saying, Jesus is good.
[7:26] Jesus, Believing in him Is a good thing. But, You need to keep the Jewish laws And things in order to be saved. Just believing in Jesus Is not enough. You've got to add this to it.
[7:38] You've got to have this Or you're not going to really be saved. And what is Paul Trying to point out here In Galatians? He's saying, Look, Abraham believed And it was accounted To him for righteousness.
[7:49] Okay. What's the big deal about that? When did God tell Abraham that? Fourteen years Before any idea of law Came into existence And what God was telling him to do.
[8:05] Before the idea See, The Judaizers are saying You're going to be circumcised And you're going to do all these The idea of circumcision Circumcision Didn't even come out Until fourteen years later. After he says, Abraham, You believe in his Conted to you for righteousness.
[8:20] So what's he saying? Belief. Not the works of the law Because they weren't even in existence When Abraham believed And it was counted Under him for righteousness.
[8:31] Ooh. That's an interesting argument That Paul's making. I don't have to work my way. I don't have to do anything Other than believe.
[8:43] In Romans chapter 4 Paul wrote this Beginning of verse 1 1 through 3 What shall we say then That Abraham our father As pertaining to the flesh Hath found?
[8:55] For if Abraham Were justified by works He hath whereof to glory But not before God. For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God And it was counted Under him for righteousness.
[9:10] He says, Let's go back to the scriptures. What do the scriptures say? How many times Have you heard me say It doesn't matter what I say? What does the Bible say? The Bible, That's what we base Our belief on.
[9:23] That's what we live by. What does the Bible say? And he says here In Romans 4 3 For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God And it was counted Under him for righteousness.
[9:35] Nothing about works. Nothing about circumcision. Nothing about keeping the law. Just by believing. Later on in that chapter, Chapter 4 of Romans, Beginning at verse 9 He says this Cometh this blessedness then Upon the circumcision only Or upon the uncircumcision also.
[9:57] So, Who gets the blessing? For we say That faith was reckoned To Abraham for righteousness. Okay, Abraham became righteous. Okay, How did that happen?
[10:08] How was that then reckoned? When he was in circumcision Or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision But in uncircumcision Before that ever took place Where God ever brought it up.
[10:23] Verse 11 of Romans 4 And he received the sign Of circumcision A seal of the righteousness Of the faith Which he had yet Being uncircumcised.
[10:34] He had the faith Before being circumcised. That he might be The father of all them That believe Though they be not circumcised That righteousness Might be imputed Unto them also.
[10:47] He said he had it Before the law So that anybody Can have The righteousness of God In their life By belief. Not by any work That they have done.
[11:00] Notice there In verse 11 He says He received the sign Of circumcision A seal Of the righteousness Of the faith. A seal.
[11:12] What does this mean By a seal? He means something That is confirmed Proved Authenticated As by a seal A token Or a proof. So what's he saying?
[11:24] Circumcision Was a proof A mark Of The salvation. It was not It was not The means Of salvation. Hmm How does that work today?
[11:38] What's the seal Of salvation That we have today? Ephesians chapter 1 Verses 11 Verses 12 and 13 Ephesians chapter 1 12 and 13 Said this That we should be To the praise Of his glory Who first trusted In Christ In whom Ye also trusted After that ye Heard the word Of truth The gospel Of your salvation In whom also After that ye Believed Ye were sealed With the Holy Spirit Of promise.
[12:08] How do we get Sealed today That we're saved? That we believe That we have Christ's righteousness? He says the Holy Spirit comes to live Within you. The moment you Ask Jesus Christ To come into Your life The moment you say I trust Christ As my savior I trust in what He did on the cross He died for me He was buried He rose again He conquered death For me He says The minute you Believe that You get the seal Of the Holy Spirit Of promise Comes into your life Wow Nothing I have to do In order to be saved Other than believe And when I believe God says The Holy Spirit Comes Into your life To seal you We'll talk some more About that in just a second What that means Because see Once we have the faith Like Abraham had No works Nothing else Just believe And it's the kind
[13:09] Of righteousness Then What happens? We become part Of the family We become part Of the family Notice second law The family of Abraham Those who put Their trust In Christ Are the same Family of faith As Abraham was We're doing it In the same way We're trusting Christ And we have Similar qualities As to what we Just talked about Number one They believe They believe Look at verse 7 He says Know ye therefore That they Which are of faith The same Are the children Of Abraham He says Those that are of faith Are the children Of Abraham We're part of his family We get to be a part Of the family Of God You all know These next two verses Real well Ephesians 2 8 and 9 For by grace Are you saved Through faith And that not of yourselves It is the gift of God
[14:09] Not of works Lest any man Should boast He says Again Grace Saves you Through faith That not of yourselves Nothing you've done Gift of God Not of works He says Nothing you've done Had brought you Into that family Other than Believing in Jesus Christ When you believe In Jesus Christ You are sealed By that Holy Spirit Of promise You are part Of God's family And you're part Of the family Of Abraham Because he got saved The same way Then he says Look They also received Justification They received Justification Look at verses 8 and 9 He says And the scripture For seeing that God would justify The heathen Through faith Preached before The gospel Unto Abraham Saying In thee Shall all nations Be blessed So then They which be Of faith Are blessed With faithful Abraham For as many
[15:11] As are of the Works of the Law Are under The curse For it is Written Cursed is Everyone that Continueth not In the things Which are written In the book Of the law To do them He says First of all You're qualified To be recipients Of this Justification You're qualified Because you're Part of God's Family Part of Abraham's Family Because you're Part of those Who have believed That Jesus Christ Came for you You're part Of those Who believed In what God has Told you Jesus Christ Had not come When Abraham Was around But he Believed God He trusted God And what he Had for them In those Verses that we Read earlier In Genesis 12 He says Look In thee Shall all The families Of the earth Be blessed Abraham Because you Believed Abraham Because you Did what I Asked All the Nations All the Families Of the earth Are going To be blessed Do you Realize You have Blessings Because of What Abraham Did Because he
[16:13] Set the tone He set the Example Believe On the Lord Jesus Christ Genesis 18 18 Seeing That Abraham Shall surely Become a Great and Mighty nation And all The nations Of the earth Shall be Blessed In him He says Even us Today In the 21st Century He says We're Blessed Because of Abraham And what He did Because of His Example To us What did He do That was So great He believed And it was A kind of The infant Righteousness You're there In chapter Three of Galatians Look down To the End of The chapter Verse 28 And 29 Verse 28 Says For there Is neither Jew Nor Greek There Is neither Bond Nor Free There Is neither Male Nor Female For ye
[17:14] Are all One In Christ Jesus And if Ye be Christ Then ye Are Abraham's Seed And heirs According To the Promise He says Look It doesn't Matter Whether you're Jew or Greek It doesn't Matter if You're Male Or Female Doesn't Matter if You're Bond Or Free Doesn't Matter if You're Black White Red Yellow Doesn't Matter He says For ye Are all One In Christ Jesus We have A unity If we Know Jesus Christ Is our Savior We have A unity We are A family Because Of the Belief We have In Jesus He says Goes on He says And if Ye be Christ Then ye Abraham Seed And he Errs According To the Promise He said If you Believe In Christ If you're His You're Part of That Tradition That Started With Abraham You're Part of That Family That Started With Abraham You're Part of God's People You ever Stop And think About That You're
[18:15] Part of The Family Of God We sing That I'm So Glad I'm A part Some Of You Weren't So Glad When we First Started Out About It But Think About It I'm So Glad I'm A part Of The Family Of God Then In Verse Nine He Says That Request That He Had Is Fulfilled He Says Look We've All Put Our Faith In Jesus Christ So We're Blessed To Be Abraham's Seed Jesus Christ Who Is The Savior Of All Men Says Especially Those Who Believe Jesus Jesus Died For Everyone But Those That Believe It's Counted Under Them For Righteousness Those That Believe He Is The True Savior He Died For All But He Says You Need
[19:15] To Believe On The Lord Jesus Christ First Timothy 4 10 For Therefore We Both Labor And Suffer Reproach Because We Trust In The Living God Who Is The Savior Of All Men Especially Those That Believe I Just Read That First Ephesians Chapter 1 Verse 7 In Whom We Have Redemption Through His Blood The Forgiveness Of Sins According To The Rich Of His Grace He Has Given Us Redemption He Has Bought Us Back From This World And From Satan He Has Done It Through The Offering Of His Blood Which Is For The Forgiveness Of Sins We Have His Riches Because Of His Grace Upon Us See You've Heard Me Mention This Many Other Times But Not Only Do We Get Saved And Have A Home In Heaven Awaiting Us But We Become Part Of The Family Of God What's That Mean He Talks About In Romans We're Joint Heirs
[20:15] With Jesus Christ We Have Access To Everything We Don't Believe It We Don't Put It Into Practice But He Says You Have Access So Here We Are We've Seen The Faith Of Abraham Who Got Saved By His Faith Alone No Works No Law Because It Wasn't In Exist Yet So Here's Abraham His Faith His Faith We Have The Kind Of Faith That Abraham He Says You Get To Be Part Of A Family And If You Get To Be Part Of A Family How Do Families Operate What Do Families Do Well Hopefully If It's A Good Family You Have Favor In That Family And He Says You Have The Favor Of God On Your Life The Favor Of God See Most Religions They Teach In Order To Have God's Favor You Have
[21:15] To Work For It You Have To Go Out And Do Something In Order To Earn God's Favor You Have To Do Do Do Do God Says Done Done Done Done By Jesus Christ It's All Been Taken Care Of Jesus Did All The Work That Needs To Be Done And If I'm Looking For The Favor Of God It's Not Going To Be Found In The Law Look At Verse 10 Of Galatians 3 Verse 10 For As Many As Are Of The Works Of The Law Are Under The Curse For It Is Written Curses Everyone That Continueth Not In All Things Which Are Written In The Book Of The Law To Do Them But That No Man Is Justified By The Law In The Side Of God It Is Evident For The Just Shall Live By Faith Stop There For Second He Says Look First Of All You're Not Going To Get God's
[22:15] Favor Because It's Not Found In The Law Why Because In Order To Fulfill The Law We Have To Do It It It Requires Perfection None Of Us Are Perfect Anybody Here Today Perfect No Nobody Here Today Is Perfect So None Of Us Can Keep The Law To Perfection All Of Us Are Going To Mess It Up Somehow God's Law Was Perfect And What He Gave It Was Without Flaw But We Are Born In Sin We Have Sin In Our Life And We Are Not Perfect So If A Person Comes To God By The Law He Must Do It Perfectly Flawlessly Deuteronomy Chapter 27 Verse 26 Says This Cursed Be He That Confirmeth Not All The Words Of This Law To Do Them And The People Shall Say Amen All The
[23:15] Words Of This Law Ezekiel 18 4 Behold All Souls Are Mine As The Soul Of The Father So Also The Soul Of The Son Is Mine The Soul That Sinneth It Shall Die We're Born In Sin We Can't Keep The Law Perfectly He Says The Soul That Sineth It Shall Die New Testament James Chapter 2 Verses 10 And 11 For Whosoever Shall Keep The Whole Law And Yet Offend In One Point He Is Guilty Of All For He That Said I Do Not Commit Adultery Say Also Do Not Commit Adultery Say Also Do Not Kill Now If Thou Commit No Adultery Yet If Thou Kill Thou Will Become A Transgressor Of The Law Let Me Illustrate It This Way Bible Gives Ten Commandments Among Those He Says You Shouldn't Kill He Also Says In The Tenth Commandment Thou Shall
[24:15] Not Covet Well I Have Not Killed Anybody Okay Good That's That's A Good Start But He Also Says Thou Shall Not Covet All Of Us Covet Something Sometime Or Other Oh I Wish I Had Their House Oh I Wish I Had Their Car Oh I Wish I Had Their Job Oh I Wish I Had And He Says If You Break In One Point You Broken The Law We Have All Kinds Of Laws In The Book Jared Works As A Jail You Know That He Gets Visitors Down There Every Day Because Of Things That They Done You Know I Didn't Kill Anybody But I Did Write You Know A Thing That Was Made Me Guilty Of Fraud Or Whatever You Broke The Law No I Only Broke One No You
[25:15] Broke The Law And That's What If We Mess Up In One Point You Broke The Law And He Says We Can't Do It It's Not Within Us To Do That Second Thing He Shows Is The Law Does Not Justify Look At Verse 11 But That No Man Is Justified By The Law In The Sight Of God The Law Can't Produce Any Fruit In Our Life The Law Can't Make It So That We Look As Though We Never Sin We Can't Live Up To The Law Is Qualification Because If I Mess Up One Point I Broke The Law Did You Know That Our Being Able To Keep All That Law Was Never God's Intent He Knew We Were Sinners He Knew We Couldn't Do It Then Why Did He Give It To Us What's The Point The Point Was To Teach Us Something I Can't Keep The Law Well
[26:16] If I Can't Keep The Law How Am I Getting To Heaven I Glad You Asked I Send A Savior I Send My Only Begotten Son Because He Could Live Life Perfectly Because He Can Provide The Way Of Salvation For All Of You See Somewhere I've Mentioned It He Mentioned About The Law Being A School Master It Was To Teach Us That We Need A Savior I Cannot Do It On My Own The Law Basically Only Confirmed And Gave Us Knowledge Of The Fact That We're Sinful We're Guilty We Can't Do It Romans Chapter 3 Verse 12 It's Up There On The Screen Therefore By The Deeds Of The Law There Shall No Flesh Be Justified In His Sight For By The Law
[27:17] Is The Knowledge Of Sin If It Wasn't For The Law I Wouldn't Know I Was A Sinner I Was Thinking Just Going Along Life Doing Okay Yeah I Mess Up Here And Mess Up There But It's No Big Deal He Says No That's Why The Law Is In Place To Help You Understand You Are Sinner You Need A Savior And Then The Law Is Not Of Faith Third Thing The Law Is Not Of Faith Look at Verse 12 Again And The Law Is Not Of Faith But The Man That Do With Them Shall Live In Them Christ Hath Redeemed Us From The Curse Of The Law Being Made A Curse For Us For It Is Written Cursed Is Everyone That Hangeth On A Tree That The Blessing Of Abraham Might Come On The Gentiles Through
[28:17] Jesus Christ That We Might Receive The Promise Of The Spirit Through Faith He Says The Law Is Not By Faith The Law Is Us Trying To Work Our Way I Need To Trust Christ Those Of You Were In Sunday School And You Getting The Understanding That How Important Our Faith Is And What God Is Doing He Says Look Attempting The Law Doesn't Require Any Faith I Just Do Things And That That's It That's Verse 12 There He Says Look Salvation Comes Through Jesus Christ He Is The One Who Redeemed Us From The Curse Of The Law That's Verse 13 And Then He Says Look Trust Christ By Faith Because He Redeems Us He Also Secures Us Verse 14 I've Already Read This To You Once You're Going To See It Once Or Twice More In Whom We Have Redemption Through His Blood The Forgiveness Of Sins According To The Riches Of His Grace Jesus
[29:18] Christ Redeemed Us Jesus Christ Gave Us The Forgiveness Of Sins He Did It By The Riches Of His Grace Ephesians 1 13 And 14 In Whom Ye Also Trusted After Ye You Are Sealed With The Holy Spirit Of He Says Look You're Redeemed Through Jesus Christ You're Redeemed Because Jesus Paid The Price For You And Because Jesus Christ Paid The Price For You You Are Sealed With The Holy Spirit Of Promise And That Is The Earnest Of The Inheritance Of Redemption What does That word Earnest Mean A Down Payment The
[30:18] Down Payment You Ever Give Earnest Money On A Loan Give Earnest Money On A Mortgage It's A Down Payment This Is Probably Not The Best Illustration But Makes It Easier To Understand When Jesus Christ Died On The Cross For Us He Paid The Penalty For Our Sin When We Believe And Accept What He Did He Says You Get The Holy Spirit Of Promise The Holy Spirit Comes In He Seals Us He Is The Earnest He He He Says Which Is The Earnest Those Of Those Of You Who Are Old Enough Do You Remember Christmas Time When You Used To Go To Store And You Do A Layaway That was a while ago Wasn't it Okay You Could Do Layaway And You Would Take The Thing That You Wanted To Purchase You Take It To The Back There And They Would You Give Them So Much Money And They Set
[31:19] It On A Shelf And You Come In And You Pay The Balance Of What You Ode On It And Take It Home With You You Paid That Earnest Money You Paid That Down Payment To Put It On Layaway It Belongs To You They Put It On A Shelf So Nobody Can Buy It It It It Is Yours All You Had To Have Was The Rest Of The Payment Jesus Says When You Accept Me As Savior The Holy Spirit Comes In He Seals You He's The Earnest And When I Come Again You're Going Home With Me Think About That So I'm On Lay Away Am I Saved Yes I Am I'm Just Waiting For Jesus To Come And Take Me Home They Don't Have That Under The Law That's Not Something They Have This
[32:20] Idea Of Favor With God Is Also It Is Found In Jesus Christ In Verse 13 Christ Hath Redeemed Us From The Curse Christ Hath Redeemed Us We Couldn't Earn God's Favor There's Nothing We Could Do On Our Own How Did We Get It Once Again Ephesians 1 7 But In Whom We Have Redemption Through His Blood Even The Forgiveness Of Sins And Then Verse 14 He Says That The Blessings Of Abraham Might Come On The Gentiles Through Jesus Christ That We Might Receive The Promise Of The Spirit Through Faith We Have Been Secured By The Promise Of The Spirit Again Verses 13 And 14 Of Ephesians 1 In Whom Ye Also Trusted After That Ye Heard The Word Of Truth The
[33:20] Gospel Of Your Salvation In Whom Also After That Ye Believed You Were Sealed With The Holy Spirit Of Promise Which Is The Earnest of Our Inheritance We Have The Faith Like Abraham Had We Believe In What God Has Done And How He Has Taken Care Of Us We Are Adopted Into The Family Of God Because Of That Faith We Are Now Part Of His Family Part Of Abraham Part Of God And Because Of That We Have The Favor Of God On Our Life Through Jesus Christ And The Sealing Of The Holy Spirit As Part Of Abraham's Family We Have A Message Did You Know You Have A Message If You're Saved You Have A Message You Have A Message To Take Out To Those Of The World Hang On Just A It's The Same Message That Was Given Abraham You're
[34:20] Saved By Faith It's The Same Message That Paul Preached You're Saved By Faith It's The Same Message That We Were Saved By By Faith God Says You Trust Me You Leave Your Eternal Destiny With Me You Leave The Forgiveness Of Your Sin With Me You Don't Have To Do Anything Of Your Own Trust Me God's Perfect Work At The Cross Through Jesus Christ Justified Us And All We Have To Do Is Believe So Paul's Telling These Folks These Judaizers Are Trying To Tell You Add This Add This Add This He Saying No Trust Me You It's Such A Simple Thing Like I Said But Yet It's So Hard Sometimes Trust God Why Is It So Hard For Us Because
[35:21] We Like to Do Things Ourselves Because We Like to Think We Can Especially As Americans We Pull Ourselves Up By Our Boot Straps We Did This We Accomplished This We He Says No Trust Me Leave It There Those Those Of You In Sunday School Again Hebrews Hebrews Chapter 9 Verses 11 And 12 But Christ Being Come And High Priest Of Good Things To Come By A Greater And More Perfect Tabernacle Not Made With Hands That Is To Say Not Of This Building Neither By The Blood Of Goats And Calves But By His Own Blood He Entered In Once Into The Holy Place Having Obtained Eternal Redemption For Us He Obtained Eternal Redemption For Us Not A Thing We Have To Do Think
