[0:00] Well, that's when you sing the first verse again. All right, we're going to the Bible now, Genesis chapter 3.
[0:11] One of the parts of that song said they're safe now in glory.
[0:33] And I just thought, well, it's because they don't have Fourth of July weekend coming up. They're safe, all right. But it's already starting to bang and boom around Silmar. It's going to get crazy.
[0:47] All right, Genesis chapter 3. We have worked our way up to this point here. We're continuing the study of Adam and Eve and the outcome of their sin.
[1:01] And the section that we've been in for the last two weeks was in verses 14 through 19, studying the curses first, the contrasting curses. God cursed the ground and he cursed the serpent and saw some things there.
[1:14] And then last Sunday we started with the continuing consequences. The man and his wife were not cursed.
[1:25] They were already blessed. And God will not curse what he blesses. And in this case anyway, that's forever. But we see that there are consequences.
[1:37] Judgment does follow disobedience. And they're not going to get away with their sin. And so we studied the beginning was what he dealt with with the woman in verse 16.
[1:49] And he dealt with two things. Number one was sorrow and the manifold sorrows that come upon the woman in the category of childbearing, of conception to bringing forth children.
[2:03] And we made some comments about not only the physical pain but also the danger as well as the heaviness of heart that children can be to not only their mothers but as fathers as well.
[2:17] And one thing we learned there is pretty plain and it's pretty simple. But with sin comes sorrow. It's the first thing that God says is, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow.
[2:29] And he brings it up again. Sorrow. And it even comes up a third time when he's dealing with Adam. In verse 17. In sorrow. And so with sin comes sorrow.
[2:41] And you can enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season. But understand you're going to endure the sorrows of that sin just as well. And that season is often longer than the pleasurable season.
[2:52] That is often long term stuff. And the best thing to do is to take sin serious. And do your best to avoid it. And avoid the sorrows that come with it.
[3:02] The second thing we saw was her subordinance. And because of her part in the transgression, the woman was to be in subordinance to her husband. Thy desire shall be to thy husband.
[3:13] He shall rule over thee. And this is not something that disappeared when Eve got saved. Or because society doesn't accept that anymore. Nothing changed about Genesis chapter 3.
[3:25] We commented on this last week. We ran a few verses in the Pauline epistles. Where Paul makes some things very clear. And some statements that are to be received.
[3:36] As the word of God to you as women. To be in submission to your husbands. And to do it as unto the Lord. And the word under was something that Paul used.
[3:49] In 1 Corinthians 14. To be under obedience. And the comments there was that the work of your flesh ladies. Is to rebel against God.
[3:59] And to rebel against your head. And that's just the bottom line. I mean I don't need to really talk about it much more than that. Just put it out there in front of you.
[4:10] And say you're going to be tempted to do that. And you need to understand what that is. When it comes up. And when you see it and experience it. It's a work of your flesh. Trying to rebel. Society has rebelled.
[4:21] Completely rebelled. Against what God set forth in verse 16 there. To the woman. Society has started movements. Liberation. Equality. And I showed you.
[4:32] This was a. I don't know how long ago this was. But I showed you. One time in a message. That the thing is going to go. Completely 180. And reversed. And I don't have time to get into that.
[4:44] But it's going to come back all the way around. You already see signs of it. To where the man is worshipping the woman. And obeying the woman. And that's just how backwards. Man will be. When he rebels against God.
[4:56] Now I gave you a little chart there. On headship. I showed it on the screen. And then we closed. We closed with a thought toward the man. To close verse 16. While God is addressing the woman.
[5:07] He makes the comment that. Thy desire shall be to thy husband. And he shall rule over thee. And the thought there. To the men was that. Although he's not being addressed.
[5:19] There is some implications here as well. There's a responsibility that forms. That automatically forms. When the woman is told to be in submission. Because now he has leadership responsibilities.
[5:32] And we studied. And really just saw quickly. That he that ruleth over men must be just. Ruling in the fear of God. And the thought there was for a husband.
[5:42] To have rule over his wife. And over his home. He's got to do it in the fear of God. And if he doesn't fear God. The thing is not going to work. There's. It's not even possible for it to work.
[5:53] And it may. They may get together. And they may dwell. In somewhat of peace. But it's not going to bring glory to God. And it's not going to be righteous. And so inherent with the consequence of subordinance.
[6:05] Comes the responsibility to the husband. To lead. And to love. And to do so in the fear of God. Now we're going to turn our attention to verses 17 through 19.
[6:16] Where God now addresses Adam. And this is. This is the continuing consequences. Now toward the man. So let's read together verses 17 through 19.
[6:28] And unto Adam he said. Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife. And hast eaten of the tree of which I commanded thee. Saying thou shalt not eat of it. Cursed is the ground for thy sake.
[6:40] In sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life. Thorns also. And thistles. Shall it bring forth to thee. And thou shalt eat the herb of the field.
[6:51] In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread. Till thou return unto the ground. For out of it was thou taken. For dust thou art. And unto dust shalt thou return.
[7:02] So Adam hearkened. God said. He hearkened. Unto the voice of his wife. It wasn't just listening with his ears. To her talking. But rather he was guilty of something here.
[7:15] He was guilty of giving into her. Giving into her suggestion. Or her persuasion. Her will. Her voice. Is what he calls it. You've hearkened unto the voice of thy wife.
[7:27] In doing so. Adam disobeyed God's command. The only command that God gave Adam. Not to eat of that tree. So.
[7:39] Not only did Adam disobey. The command of God. But in doing so. He chose the voice of his wife. Over the voice. Or command.
[7:50] Of his maker. Of almighty God. And before we even go. Into the consequences. Let me just. Introduce and say this. To the men.
[8:01] When you know plainly. What God has said to you. When you know a command. Written in black and white. When you know it in your head and heart. This is right.
[8:11] This is what God wants me to do. It is never right. For you to disobey it. No matter who is telling you.
[8:22] No matter. There is never justification. For disobeying. The word of God. The woman that thou gave us. To be with me. She gave.
[8:34] Doesn't work Adam. Consequences are coming now. You don't get to justify yourself. If I could. If I could. If I could loosely.
[8:45] Paraphrase. What Peter said in Acts 5. He said. We ought to obey God. Rather than men. May I loosely paraphrase and say. Men. We ought to obey God. Rather than women.
[8:56] Amen. Amen. How important it is. For ladies. As well as men. To walk with God.
[9:07] And to obey God. And to be spiritually minded. And to guard their hearts. Because much heartache. And many consequences. Can be avoided. When both the man.
[9:18] And the woman. Are intent upon. Obeying the voice of the Lord. If you're married. Compromise is necessary. I mean it's.
[9:28] It's absolute. It's one of the. Pardon the pun here. But it's one of the rules of engagement. And maybe you'll get that in a minute. The Christian life is likened to a battle too.
[9:42] That's not really going over too well. But that was pretty good. There is compromise in any relationship. And especially in a marriage.
[9:52] There is absolute compromise. But it's never. Ever. Ever. Ever. Right. Or justified. To compromise. On the word of God. When you know what the truth is. So let's look at these consequences.
[10:05] To the man. I'll give them to you here quickly. The first one. Is exertion. The second one. Is expulsion. And the third one. Is expiration.
[10:17] So the first one. In verse 17. Because thou has done this. The third one. In verse. In the middle of the verse.
[10:27] He says. Thou shalt not eat of it. Cursed. Is the ground. For thy sake. Cursed is the ground. For thy sake. Cursed is the ground. For thy sake.
[10:37] And what follows this curse. Is sorrow. Thorns and thistles. Sweat. the first consequence is this added toil and labor and hard work additional effort that he never knew and had to experience but because of his sin the consequence is going to be i'll call it exertion we see this by his struggles with the soil cursed is the ground adam had been given responsibility over that garden to do two things god said dress it and keep it god planted the garden though and then he placed man in the garden eastward in eden that god had planted adam just take care of it just be a husbandman groom it take care of it but he was about to find out that things have drastically changed for him because cursed is the ground for his sake sorrow and sweat thorns and thistles this decree this curse on the ground was massive i mean you don't even understand it do you it was massive in the moment nothing about life is going to come easy anymore the old serpent by the way failed to tell eve this he failed to bring that up he told a good story about how your eyes are going to be open you're going to be as gods what a what a grand thing to contemplate and to think on yet never did the serpent in or unveiled to them the curse that was coming and the manner of life that was coming the struggles now they're going to experience pain and sorrow and this is just a good place to to remind you that the consequences of sin are never positive they're never healthy they're never helpful they're always harmful they're always drastic they're always hurt the consequences of sin the fun is short-lived but the struggles and the consequences are long-term the affair is fun but the divorce is painful for a lot of people the the pills are relaxing or the the drinks are refreshing but the the car crash or the jail cell or the broken homes or the destroyed lives are painful the consequences are never exciting and fun sin can feel satisfying in the moment but the sorrows and the struggles that it brings on far outweigh far outweigh the pleasure they're continuing consequences of sin so consequence number one is exertion and we see this with his struggles with the soil we also see this with his fight for food we'll notice these words in verses 17 he says uh thou shalt not eat of it cursed is the ground and sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life in verse 18 at the end he says thou shalt eat the herb of the field in verse 19 in the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread we see this consequence of exertion in his fight for food he mentions it actually 17 times the word eat or eaten or some form of it is in this chapter it's remarkable how much that comes up but you got to eat to live right and until now it seems to me that god has just been feeding everyone really literally god planted the garden and he told them what they could eat and the trees that have the fruit you can eat of all of them they're good for food god did all of that
[14:39] and i'm i think there's something in that uh statement about eating the herb of the field in verse 18 that that's for the animals uh not saying i mean the herbs were given to man as well but what he says there you'd have to read the other previous verses but it seems to me like that's for the beast of the field and when he says field but nevertheless he's going to have a fight on his hands to feed himself as far as the animals go i believe god continues to feed them because uh jesus christ said behold the fowls of the air they sow not neither do they reap neither gather into barns yet your heavenly father feedeth them and from the beginning of creation god took that responsibility upon himself to feed all of his creatures but when he cursed the ground and when the man sinned a consequence came you're on your own now buddy you're gonna have to work you're gonna have to feed your own face now adam's gonna have to fight with a cursed ground to feed himself and his wife and his children and it's not a fight that he needed it's not a consequence that he is going to enjoy either but he relinquished what god had given him when he chose to sin and now his hungry belly is going to demand that he work and he's famished and he's toiling and he's sweating he's going to fight for his food and he doesn't have any guns he's not allowed to hunt the animals are not given to him for food it's just him and the dirt and that dirt's cursed and that dirt's against him this is a very big consequence of the curse now i don't suppose anybody in here has fully felt this consequence we've been born into a society where man has been working so hard and and put so much energy into avoiding this curse or avoiding this consequence he's developed these in just incredible supply chains from the ports to the trucking to the train stations to the warehouses to the grocery stores to the restaurants to the food trucks to the cell phone uber eats and it's just there uh the the man has done so much labor and worked so hard to get around it to where you and i we we don't even know what it's like haven't you ever thought about it though haven't you thought about what would it be like to have to survive off of the land has the thought not at least come across your mind maybe back when covid was hitting and like all everything's gonna fall apart did you not ever consider what would it be like could i even do it could i personally survive could i feed and take care of my family living off the land i'm telling you this thing is a it's a it would be the hardest thing you ever had to do hands down most of us would be malnourished and starving and possibly even dying it wouldn't be easy and there's adam no grocery stores and no food trucks and he doesn't hear that sound you know going around the neighborhood not for adam he's gonna have to figure it out when he gets kicked out of the garden now i'm sure he had done some work out there and we'll talk about that but this was not going to be easy this was a heavy heavy consequence this exertion i'm calling it is not to be underestimated what the man is going to have to do now it's a continuing consequence since by one man sin entered into the world and man has since been in a fight for food the statistics say that about one-tenth of the world population right now is fighting to stay alive because of lack of food it's not that there's not enough available or possibility of it it's the
[18:45] access to it or in their certain because of wars or because of famines or because of certain circumstances they don't have food and some don't have money even if they did have food and there's organizations that have been trying to solve this problem for decades now and i've got news for them the problem will never go away it's a consequence it's a continuing consequence north of us is the san joaquin valley just north of that go over that pass at mount fraser and you come down and and you come down into some land that is just just bearing tons of pounds of of just volumes and volumes of produce and foods and you could drive for miles on route five or even up 80 99 and the the further you go this there's more and more and more and more they've been doing incredible i've gotten all the way up just recently to uh stockton and beyond that and going to see brother hilton smith toward grass valley we went through some areas that uh just big big farm business going on up there and just seeing the rice fields that have been flooded and and groomed out and it's just phenomenal what man has been able to do and continues to do but if you if you took away the irrigation if you stopped flooding the fields if you stopped tilling those lands you know what you're going to get i'll tell you what you get you're going to get thorns and thistles that's what's going to come up it's still going on you walk around in these hills there's you go anywhere in the forest in the woods you're going to find thorns and thistles matter of fact yesterday just there's this plant that's growing out here and some of it was growing over here now too that it was eight to ten feet tall hanging over and i got a little piece of it i was going to bring in i forgot to sitting on my desk that i cut down it has thorns at least three quarters of an inch long going up the whole thing and i look at that and say what on earth is this what purpose is this why is this here it's growing right here on fenton street and then these guys show up today and cut everything down and why did i wait should have waited a day thorns and thistles just pop up they're all over the place even yesterday pulling a few weeds there's there's little weeds with thorns all over them and then there's these ones with massive ones then there's the ones that spread across the ground with those god forbidden devil goat head things that destroy your shoes and your tires and your sports equipment and it's everywhere and you can't get away from it and that's what comes up when god stops feeding man and man has to do it himself and god curses the ground he's in a fight for food it's a continuous battle and it's a consequence of sin and how much better was it when god took care of them and when they were right with god and in his presence and they were in the place where he planted them and in communion with them and then look what they forfeited look what they forfeited and what they'll get in its place again the way of transgressors is hard now spiritually speaking before we move on i want you to consider this cursed ground there's a picture in here that's worth considering spiritually speaking this cursed ground and its consequences reveal the heart of man do you remember jesus christ talking about good ground and then he's talking about ground where thorns grow up and choke the word it pictures the heart of man the thorns and the thistles picture sin and how hard they are to keep out of your heart
[22:46] before the sin before man fell i don't imagine anything was like this but now the heart of man is bringing forth bringing forth abundantly thorns and thistles sins and what it shows me is just like adam had this toil and labor and exertion and this struggle and this fight on his hands so does the born again believer in jesus christ have a struggle on his hands to keep the sins out and defeat himself it's a fight isn't it it's a struggle that you're going to have to partake in you've got to feed yourself you've got to get the sin out you've got to try your best to keep it out it's going to be labor and you know why some christians aren't walking with god because they're lazy because they don't think it's a big deal and they don't realize the thorns are overtaking and growing and choking the word of god and the good seed as it comes forth and it wants to get planted in there and bring forth fruit unto god and instead the seeds or the thorns of the wild nature in them grow and grow and grow there's definitely a picture to be seen and obtained it's important that you fight it's important that you feed yourself it's important that you discipline yourself to open your bible and break up the fallow ground and attend church and to walk in the spirit and to fellowship with believers and there's real work that you're going to have to put into this to sustain the inner man now we see another consequence and the second one is expulsion in verse number 18 he says thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee and thou shalt eat the herb of the field of the field not the garden they've been sent out they've been exiled look a little bit later at verse 22 and the lord god said behold the man has become as one of us to know good and evil and now lest he put forth his hand and take also of the tree of life and eat and live forever therefore the lord god sent him forth from the garden of eden to till the ground from whence he was taken so he drove out the man and placed at the east of the garden of eden cherubims and a flaming sword which turned every way to keep the way of the tree of life expulsion in the days of creation god he prepared a specific sanctuary for adam look back at chapter number two look at verse number eight the lord god planted a garden eastward and eden and there he put the man whom he had formed in verse 15 it says and the lord god took the man and put him into the garden of eden to dress it and to keep it the man was never commanded to stay put in the garden he was never commanded that he couldn't go out don't think of it as just some dry barren cursed ground outside of the garden that wasn't the case not not yet but it was good what god had created for the man and the woman and for all of the cattle and the beast of the field and the creeping things and the birds all of that he had prepared and planted for them and it was good and so don't think that the man had to stay put in the garden couldn't leave and was supposed to populate populate the garden no he was told to be fruitful and multiply and replenish the earth so they were expected to go out expected to expand surely they wondered and explored even built it's not in the text it doesn't have to be in the text but in chapter number four his son cain builds a city so don't think for a minute that adam wasn't industrious he absolutely
[26:51] was industrious an incredible mind a sharp mind given to him by god even in his wonderings and in his ventures he could return to the garden and he could fill his soul and his being with the plentiful produce the fruits that god had planted for him he could be in that absolute paradise but a consequence is expulsion paradise lost and what a sad and a troubling day when they're removed and when they're informed that you're not coming back when they see the cherubims and the flaming sword and they know god is not allowing us back into that paradise ever again they could look back they could look back in their eyes they could look back in their minds and recall the good days and recall the peace and recall the freedom but sin has consequences and what a consequence this was for them what a loss this was for them and isn't that the truth about sin a real consequence of sin that continues today is that you lose some things that you can never get back when you sin think about this sin will take the purity from a teenager or from a young man or from a young woman and it will never give it back it'll steal it sin will take away the innocence that we have in our minds and replace it with corruption you can look at something you can't unsee it you can hear something you can ingest and digest and ponder things and then you can't just rid your mind of them they get in and they grow i said last week sins like poison you drink it it works on the inside and destroys and destroys and destroys sin steals days you lose years even of your life and never get them back because of sin men lose their health men lose their homes marriages are lost relationships are lost trust is lost gone because of sin money is loss sanity is lost sanity is lost peace joy sin will take it all and never give it back some lose their sweetness in place now they're bitter they're cold and they're hard because of sin and in some cases sin will take your life there's a lot of loss because of sin a consequence of sin and what these two lost and what they what they gave up because they chose to disobey could we learn a lesson from this this morning could we like really consider that sin is not something to be playing with if you know it's wrong it's gonna harm you if you know it's sin it's going to have a consequence if you know it's not right then stop with all your being stop get on your face and repent before you're the one that's losing and you won't be able to get it back you will lose by the way there'll be sorrow there'll be suffering there'll be real consequences and for adam and eve there was exertion work that they never should have been involved in and now they will for the rest of their life there's expulsion kicked out of a beautiful wonderful place and then the third and final thing this morning is the consequence of
[30:52] expiration in verse 17 at the end it says sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life adam your days are numbered in verse 19 he's informed that he's going back to the dust in verse 19 he says in the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread till thou return into the ground what yeah adam you're going back to the ground i formed you from the ground and that's where you're going back to but why you sinned there's consequences for sin that's why for out of it was thou taken for dust thou art and unto dust god determined this he planned this he decided this in his infinite wisdom that's what you're going back to i'm done with you you're going to cease unto dust shalt thou return and so there's two kinds of death that we'll discuss here that are in this story the first is physical death it's now on the table physical death it's an inevitable appointment sooner or later those days will be expired and adam will die and in chapter five we read that he died in chapter five verse five and he died and so did his son and so did his son and adam lived an incredible 930 years all told and i can't say that he began this slow process of dying because he lived 930 years he had seth at i think uh 130 and lived 100 and or 800 years after he had seth i can't say that he just slowly died but it really doesn't matter how long he lived you may not be able to compare years to years with these men back here but one thing i can say is true of adam and it's true of you every day that goes by is a day closer to you going down to the ground to returning to dust it's a consequence a continual consequence it is appointed unto man once to die because adam sinned death passed upon all men you're going down very few have escaped the clutch of death and those ones god had to do something miraculous expiration physical death and then secondly spiritual death look at chapter 2 and verse 17 genesis 2 17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil thou shalt not eat of it for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die so if what god said was true then in the day that adam and eve ate thereof they died so what died well some teach that their spirit died and therefore they're spiritually dead and need to be spiritually made alive and i'll agree that they spiritually died but i'll teach a little differently i believe that it's their soul that died i believe it's the soul and the reason is because that's what's been made alive look at chapter 2 verse 7 and the lord god formed man of the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life and man became a living soul and the first time that's mentioned with that is it's a living soul and the first thing god says is going to die is thou shalt surely die thou man is a living soul and now thou adam shalt surely die what is man he's a soul you might say well he's a body soul and spirit i'll grant that but he
[34:57] himself eternally speaking is a soul uh the bible says in ezekiel that the soul that sinneth it shall die john said in revelation 20 i saw the dead small and great stand before god the dead standing before god well their souls they're not bodies it's not spirits it's their souls of men that are considered dead and they're getting cast into the lake of fire a dead soul needs to be made alive it needs to be quickened and the bible says if you're saved you hath he quickened who were dead who did he quicken you you hath he quickened who were dead oh it was just my spirit i don't think it was i don't that doesn't make any sense to me just practically speaking and scripturally that a spirit dies the spirit gives the body life the body without the spirit is dead and so in order for the body to have life it has to have the breath of life in verse 7 and that man became a living soul an eternal soul capable of spiritually dying now at any rate something changed without a doubt adam and eve no longer were naked and unashamed and at peace in the garden in fellowship with god and ignorant of their of the good and evil now they're scared now they're banished now there's a hard road ahead of them and now there's death in their future because sin entered into the world and their sons would be sinners and their grandchildren would be sinners and on and on to you are a sinner and just like adam and eve received the knowledge of the good and evil when you have knowledge of your sin and an understanding that you've sinned against a holy god you're accountable for your sins and the wages of sin is death and god will judge you as a sinner now we've seen consequences over the last two weeks of sorrow and subordination of exertion expulsion and expiration and all of it is a result of sin i can't say this enough and i'm going to close now but i can't i can't i wish i could just get god to put this inside of your head and smack you around and say wake up it's you ought to take sin serious just because you got away with it for one week doesn't mean god doesn't take it serious just because nobody found you out yet doesn't mean you're not going to be found out take it serious if there's something in your heart and you know it's wrong get it right but i did it before and i'll just do it again and i'm what do you want to do just continue on the road into sin and just have to how about just confess it how about get it under the blood of jesus christ and taste of his mercies and enjoy his grace and enjoy his forgiveness and get back into fellowship with him that's what you need to do take sin serious because god does god's full of mercy and god's full of pardon if you'll take it serious and get right but he's also full of wrath and he's also full of judgment and punishment and with sin comes sorrow and with sin comes consequences and we need to learn we need to learn the lesson from this passage we need to take it serious you can hear this and hear this and hear this and then just go right back into it you've been warned and there it is and we've hit this so many times in the chapter that god has got to be saying this to somebody so one of these days if you don't wake up and you don't get
[39:04] your heart right you're going to figure out what a fool what a fool i've been and you're going to be filled with regret and you don't have to taste that regret so the choice is yours these are the continuing consequences they're happening right now under our feet today everybody in this place is dying we've we've got an appointment thanks to adam and eve thanks to the sin they brought on and the sin that's in us we're tasting and experiencing every one of these today they are in fact continuing uh we're going to close here and i'm not sure if we're going to continue any further i have one more thought for for a final message and i don't know if i'll do it this may be the end of genesis 3 and it may not be but i'd say that in my opinion i've enjoyed this study i've enjoyed these last two or so months or better and it's been a lot more than i ever anticipated and i hope that it helps you i hope that you that this story is not just like oh again again again but but as we dig down in every portion and every part of the chapter there's truth that's being revealed and it's coming out and it's all applicable because in here is a bunch of adams and a bunch of eves and yeah christ saved you praise the lord and thank him for it but you still are have a adam inside of you that makes excuses and eve inside of you who listens to something you shouldn't be listening to and has conversations you shouldn't have and it's to your detriment so all i can say again is wake up take heed to their story and to all this truth that god's put in here for us to learn from let's pray father i pray that this study in this chapter was a christ in this chapter was a linkedin podcast and god that i's originally pentru in my revelation for your kopi ki if you нет and i can answer some other و estaban so far as fکil i do i wait to remember that before the傳 l roo factory视Rouderات與 lifes獨 perk stand avoidableblazer iki c UWem searchėA kýA KýTwo manage everything and try for you to Carollo manage everything critical feel decided and simply listen to somebody else Issary
