The Lord shall out of Zion send the rod of thy great power, in midst of all thine enemies be thou the governor. A willing people in thy day of power shall come to thee, in holy beauties from morn's womb thy youth like dew shall be. The Lord himself hath made an oath, and will repent him never. [21:16] As You Can See From Your Bibles I Am Sure Most Of Them Would Describe To Us The Author Of The Psalm As David The King And The Fact is That David Has Composed Many Psalms That we Know Of And The Fact That He Composed This One Should Not At All Be Strange However When We Read The Subject Matter Of The Psalm It Seems Incredible That Such A Passion As David Could Have Composed It It Is Undoubtedly A Psalm About The Sufferings And Sufferings Not Just Of Anybody But Of The Sufferings Of The Lord Jesus Christ One
[22:17] Of The Commentators States Nothing In The Life Of David Accounts For The Events Depicted In The Psalm Whether That Is Totally True Or Not I'm Sure David Did Have Sufferings But I Don't Think He Did Have Any That Equated Perfectly To The Sufferings We Have Recorded For Us In The Psalm Yes He Did Have His Sorrows But None Are Like What We Have Here What We Have Instead Is As One Version Of King James Bible Entitles It Is The Suffering Praise And Posterity Of The Messiah Some Some Some Some Parts Some Parts of The Psalm Are Directly Coated The Psalmist Prophetically Declared What The Saviour Would Say Or The Lord As Led By The Spirit On The Cross Coated The Words
[23:17] Of The Psalm That Were Meant Exclusively For His Mouth We Can Never Spend Too Much Time Thinking About Christ Especially As He Engaged In The Act Of Suffering Unto Death On The Cross Divines Remind Us That His Whole Life Exposed Him To Suffering From The Very Beginning But They Came To A Head When He Became The One Upon Whom The Displeasure Of God Fell When He Became The Sin Bearer When He Carried The Sins Of His People I Want Our Focus To Fall On The Words Of Verse 6 In Particular Although Clearly The Psalm Is An Organic Whole I Want Us To Think Of The Words I Am Secondly I Weren And

[29:36] The words that were sung were would he devote that sacred head for sinners such as I? And he didn't think that the substitution was appropriate.
[29:52] Now there is no doubt that this speaks of the humiliation of Christ. The prophet Isaiah says of him that he was despised and rejected of men.
[30:05] If we read carefully through the psalm and it takes us to the cross, we find the cry of delineation, the mocking crowds, the forsaking friends, the raging thirst that he endured, the physical agony of crucifixion, the casting of lots, the triumph of victory.
[30:27] Any and all of these things are worthy of much closer study, and they all appear in the psalm. But specifically, he is a worm. Perhaps, as we said, identifying himself with fallen humanity, but specifically with chosen Israel as identified by the Lord God.
[30:50] For I, the Lord, thy God, will hold thy right hand, sing unto thee, fear not, I will hold thee, fear not thou worm Jacob, and ye men of Israel.
[31:05] So wrote the prophet Isaiah. This term describes how elect Israel see themselves under the influence of the Holy Spirit.
[31:16] Without the influence of the Holy Spirit, there is pride, there is self-confidence, self-reliance, independence. But when the Spirit of God comes and reveals to us the true state of our heart, we see ourselves for what we are.
[31:36] Pride has been done away with. Grace does that, does it not? John L. in his comments on the prophecy of Isaiah suggests that the words of our quotation reflect their self-evaluation, that they were worthless and of no consequence.
[31:56] And Christ identifies with them. Christ identifies with them as a worm. Some of the older preachers, they identify the fact that the crimson dye that was used to colour fabric owed its origin to the grub or the worm of a certain species of worm.
[32:38] It was crushed and crushed to leave this dark hued dye which they compared to the sprinkling of the blood of sacrifice.
[32:58] Isaiah speaks of the bruising of Christ. But the word is more reminiscent of what is done to the grape to get the juice out of it. And that is where the divines take us to the bloodstained body of Christ.
[33:13] He is a worm and no man, he says. He is divine, yet he is man, and yet no man. A subtle reference to the suffering he was forced to endure.
[33:29] Isaiah may allude to it. He has no form nor comeliness, and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him. The suffering that he has to endure has disfigured him.
[33:46] They hide their faces from him. The psalmist in Psalm 69 says, Because for thy sake I have borne reproach. Shame has covered my face.
[33:57] I am become a stranger to my brethren, and an alien unto my mother's children. His own brothers and sisters could not recognize him because of the defigurement.
[34:11] He is reviled, ridiculed, rejected. A reproach of men. You remember the picture. The passers-by shake their heads.
[34:24] Their conclusion was, Surely this man must have done something awful, something terrible to make him endure such awful sufferings at the hand of God. The words of Psalm 69 again tell us why.
[34:39] The reproach of them. Those who reproach thee are fallen upon me. As Bishop Horn has it, humble, silent, innocent, oppressed, overlooked, and trodden under foot.
[34:59] Despised of the people. They did not see anything in him that would draw them to him.
[35:10] There was nothing for them in him. Principal Donald MacLeod in his work Christ Crucified writes the following, The whole of humanity is here.
[35:25] The common people are here, stripped of the romance that attributes special insight to an unsophisticated peasantry.
[35:37] They see no sign of kingship in the crucified one. The world's power, learning, and religion are equally blind, and on the other end of the scale is co-condemned.
[35:54] The veil, the incognito, was complete. He was dying to save the world, but he died not to a chorus of gratitude, but to a chorus of mockery.
[36:09] The God who is God over all, God who is infinite, inchingible in his being, his wisdom, and his power, and his goodness, justice, good, and truth.
[36:22] Here we have him displayed as some were him, despised and rejected. No man. As for me, we have it in the metrical psalm, I were him, I am, and as no man I'm prized, reproach of men I am, and by the people I'm despised.
[36:45] he was born to a world that did not know him, he came to his own and his own knew him not. He came to experience the wrath of God on behalf of his people and the very people for whom he came, despised and rejected him.
[37:08] How awful the picture the psalmist depicts for us such a saviour, such a saviour that we need to come to and we need to learn more about and we need to spend more time at his feet looking upon him if we dare, gazing upon his disfigured face however awful it would be that we might see him where we should be and see the wonder that God has seen fit to make such a provision for our life.
[37:46] May he bless to us his few thoughts. Let us pray. O Lord, our God, we marvel at your provision for those that sin has disfigured so terribly our blindness, our deafness, our lameness, every faculty of mind and body and soul so damaged by sin, so marred by sin and only when we see the damage done to Christ in his body as he encountered these sufferings that were his on our behalf can we see even a glimmer of what it involves for him.
[38:34] Hear our prayers, grant to us that desire to be found one with them who are his and to be with him and still live in his name in this world cleansed from sin.
[38:47] Go before us each one. Now may grace, mercy and peace from God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit be with you all now and always. Amen.
