[0:00] Let us resume our public worship of God by singing to his praise from Psalm 92.
[0:13] Psalm 92 from the beginning. To render thanks unto the Lord, it is a comely thing, and to thy name, O Thou Most High, due praise allowed to sing, Thy lovingkindness to show forth when shines the morning light, and to declare Thy faithfulness with pleasure every night, on a ten-stringed instrument, upon the psaltery, and on the harp with solemn sound and grave sweet melody.
[0:47] For Thou, Lord, by Thy mighty works hast made my heart bright glad, and I will triumph in the works which by Thine hands were made.
[0:58] How great, Lord, are Thy works! Each thought of Thine a deeper tooth, a brutish man it knoweth not, fools understand not this, when those that lewd and wicked are spring quickly up like grass, and workers of iniquity do flourish all apace.
[1:19] And so on. We can sing from the beginning of Psalm 92, To render thanks unto the Lord, it is a comely thing. To render thanks unto the Lord, it is a comely thing.
[1:45] Unto Thy name, O Thou Most High, You praise the Lord to sing.
[2:00] Thy lovingkindness to show forth when shines the morning light, unto Thee clear Thy faithfulness with pleasure every night.
[2:31] On a tenth string instrument, upon the psaltery, And on the harp with solemn sound and great sweet melody.
[3:00] For Thou, Lord, by Thy mighty works hast made my heart bright glad, And I will triumph in the works which by Thy hands were made.
[3:33] How great Lord are Thy works! It's lost all Thy mighty pit is!
[3:49] An ultra-spotology resulted in the works that Ragdyn battlefields be!
[4:04] When those that lewd and wicked are Spring quickly up like grass And workers of iniquity To flourish all the peace Let's join together in prayer. Let's pray.
[4:43] Ever blessed God as we call upon your name we give thanks for the words of the psalmist that remind us of the privilege that we have and the pleasure that ought to be ours as those who are gathered in your name with the sole purpose of worshipping and magnifying that name that is above every name we would seek thy guidance through your word so that what we say and what we do conform to your revealed will for us. We bless you and thank you that we have the entirety of that within your word that from Genesis to Revelation we have set before us all that is necessary to equip us as to how we may glorify and enjoy you as our God. We do not need to add anything to your word and we dare not subtract anything from it. We bless you and thank you that it reminds us of the glory that is huge and huge alone. Even glory that is still to be explored and enjoyed by your people much as they contemplate through the pages of Holy Read what is written about the God of Heaven and all that entails his being we give thanks that when they think of these things they think of you the God who is before us in worship and we marvel at the many things that we can stop at barely able to draw breath because of what is set before us that would fill us full of awe as the glory of your name the name that is above every name the name that speaks to us of longevity of eternity of all that is possible for us to comprehend there are some who think that having entered into this world and even with their mind set upon the truth as this world sets it before them that this world is not the place of our permanent existence those without God must acknowledge that because experience teaches them as it teaches us that our life is short and we have but a short while to live our life out in this world but that is not the full picture that is not the end your word tells us that we are made living beings we are made in your image we possess not just a physical body but a spiritual soul that which will return to God who gave it that which will exist beyond the experience of time in this world whatever lies beyond our experience of time in this world we know that you have created us with with the ability to continue even after death in the sense that the body will rest in the grave until the resurrection but the soul
[8:45] will return to God who gave it and those who are your people are encouraged in their belief to know that the soul of the believer at their death is made perfect in holiness and that they will enter into the fullness of the experience of joy in the presence of their saviour and all who have that shared experience in him we pray that you would sanctify such thoughts to us to the end that we would be encouraged in our faith to continue in this world with that destiny in view that destination awaiting us we pray that you would remind us of it so that the faith of your people would not suffer when they are encountering the ravages of time when we are in a veil of tears when we see repeatedly reminders of the frailty of the flesh and as a congregation and community are once again reminded of of the sorrows and sadness that death brings when you remove from ailments those that were known by us those who are a foreign part of family circles and whose passage from this world is marked and we pray that you would remember all such some that we know many that we may not but we pray for those that we do know that you would help them and support them as they engage with this sorrow and sadness that death brings we ask that you would remind them of the fact that for those who know the Lord that when death comes it is a day perfected and the day of their birth we pray that you would remind us all through the gospel of your grace that Christ the Lord came into this world not just to live in it and to enjoy the pleasures that this world may for a time bring but in his experiences there were sorrows that abounded and there were griefs without number he is identified as a man of sorrows acquainted with grief while we would not deny him times where he was able to interact with brothers and sisters who were bound with him in familiar ties and with ties that were secured by reason of friendships that are part of the human experience nevertheless his allotted portion no doubt was one of trying and testing and he understood sin better than any one of us he understood the griefs of death better than anyone because very few of us are willing to to to think too deeply about what it means for death to come and remove from the sin of time especially those that that we may not have a saving hope for lord we acknowledge that christ the lord understood perfectly what it meant for the unregenerate to experience death for the for the one who created heaven and earth created all things and he
[12:45] prepared a place for his people just as surely as he prepared a place for the devil and his angels and that knowledge was a knowledge that he possessed in a perfect way and we acknowledge that such a burden was one that only he could carry so we pray lord that you would remind us of of what it is to have him to go to to be the one to whom we can speak and to confess our fears and our burdens to bring them before him and seek that he would help us carry ours we pray that you would bless the community at large remembering the villages that we form a part of the homes and families of which we are a part we pray that you would bless the places amongst us that do not identify with the church of Christ in any meaningful way and we would pray for them and pray that you would enable us to be wince them towards them to draw them into the folds of the body of Christ to encourage them in our witness to seek for themselves the kingdom of God and his righteousness we pray
[14:10] Lord that you would bless the gospel to that end and that you would bless it in the actions and the activities of your people that they may truly be living epistles read of all men and that what is read is consistent with their profession we pray that you would remember the proclamation of truth in our midst and to the far corners we pray that you would own and bless that word that is preached that it would not fall to the ground without yielding fruit to the glory of your name we have no doubt that ultimately what is done in your name it will prosper in whatsoever way you choose it to whether that is to the saving of souls or to the eternal condemnation of some son but our prayer is to you oh god that you would show mercy and that you would stir us up so that we would be as one pleading on behalf of those who have no concept of mercy and no desire to have it as their portion bless our nation those who govern us in whatever way local council national parliament parliament in westminster we pray for those who serve the people in these roles may you multiply the number of those who serve you as god and as lord and that they would be fearless and stand out in your name in the face of the shallow understanding that men and women have of true morality or true righteousness as your word teaches us it is righteousness that exhorts a nation and sin is the shame of any people and we pray that you would encourage us to look to your world to have an understanding of what that entails remember the nations of the earth as we witness in these days the desperate wickedness that lies in the heart of man good word tells us that the heart of man is desperately wicked who can know it and from time to time is exposed in individual machinations and sometimes in the machinations of individuals who are dedicated to the direction of nations and when we see the turmoil in the Ukraine we are mindful not only of what is taking place there the destruction of property and the loss of life and those who are driven from their homes we are mindful of that but also if we are to be consistent we are to be mindful of other nations where there is ongoing conflict and has been for so many years and many many times we are oblivious to that we pray
[17:23] Lord that you would think of these nations and be merciful to them speak into their need and remind them that there is a God in heaven amongst all the idols that are done may you speak as God who is God over all may your voice be heard and may it be listened to and may it be magnified as the name of God must be magnified continue to watch over us guide us in the truth we pray and bless all who are in need this night in whatever way these needs are made known to us cleanse from sin in Jesus precious name we ask it amen we're to hear the word of God as we have it in the gospel of Jesus Christ according to John chapter 12 the gospel of John chapter 12 and we're reading from the beginning and we can read down to verse 36 then Jesus six days before the
[18:45] Passover came to Bethany where Lazarus was which had been dead whom he raised from the dead there they made him a supper and Martha served but Lazarus was one of them that sat at the table with him then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard very costly and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment then saith one of his disciples Judas Iscariot Simon's son which should betray him why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence and given to the poor this he said not that he cared for the poor but because he was a thief and had the bag and bare what was put therein then said
[19:45] Jesus let her alone against the day of my burying hath she kept this for the poor always ye have with you but me ye have not always much people of the Jews therefore knew that he was there and they came not for Jesus' sake only but that they might see Lazarus also whom he had raised from the dead but the chief priests consulted that they might put Lazarus also to death because that by reason of him many of the Jews went away and believed on Jesus on the on the next day much people that were come to the feast when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem took branches of palm trees and went forth to meet him and cried Hosanna blessed is the king of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord and Jesus when he had found a young ass sat thereon as it is written fear not daughter of
[20:51] Zion behold thy king cometh sitting on Anasas colt these things understood not his disciples at the first but when Jesus was glorified then remembered they that these things were written of him and that he had done these things unto him the people therefore that was with him when he called Lazarus out of his grave and raised him from the dead by record for this cause the people also met him for that they had heard that he had done this miracle the Pharisees therefore said among themselves perceive ye how ye prevail nothing behold the world is gone after him and there were certain Greeks among them that came up to worship at the feast the same came therefore to Philip which was of Bethsaida of
[21:51] Galilee and desired him saying sir we would see Jesus Philip cometh and telleth Andrew and again Andrew and Philip tell Jesus and Jesus answered them saying the hour is come that the son of man should be glorified verily verily verily I say unto you except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die that abideth alone but if it die it bringeth forth much fruit he that loveth his life shall lose it and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal if any man serve me let him follow me and where I am there shall also my servant be if any man serve me him will my father honor now is my soul troubled and what shall
[22:52] I say father save me from this hour but for this cause came I unto this hour father glorify thy name then came there a voice from heaven saying I have both glorified it and will glorify it again the people therefore that stood by and heard it said that it thundered others said an angel spake to him Jesus answered and said this voice came not because of me but for your sakes now is the judgment of this world now shall the prince of this world be cast out and I if I am lifted up from the earth will draw all men unto me this he said signifying for death he should die the people answered him we have heard out of the law that Christ abideth forever and and how says thou the son of man must be lifted up who is this son of man then
[23:58] Jesus said unto them yet a little while is the light with you walk while ye have the light lest darkness come upon you for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth while ye have light believe in the light that ye may be the children of light these things spake Jesus and departed and did hide himself from them amen and may the lord add his blessing to a reading of his word and to his name be the praise we can sing now verses from psalm 69 psalm 69 and we are singing from verse 30 to the end of the psalm from verse 32 verse 36 the name of God I with a song most cheerfully will praise and I in giving thanks to him his name shall highly raise this to the lord a sacrifice more gracious shall prove than bullock ox or any beast that hath both horn and hoof when this the humble men shall see a joy to them shall give oh all ye that do seek the lord your hearts shall ever live for
[25:27] God the poor hear and will not his prisoners condemn let heaven and earth and seas and praise and all that move in them for God will Judah's cities build and he will Zion save that they may dwell therein and it ensure possession have and they that are his servants seed inherit shall the same so shall they have their dwelling there that love his blessed name these verses of Psalm 69 the name of God I with a song most cheerfully will praise the name of God I with a song most cheerfully will praise and I am giving thanks thanks to him his name shall hide me raise this to the
[26:42] Lord not sacrifice nor gracious shall prove ear that be that at the O ye that do seek the Lord, your heart shall ever live.
[27:38] For God the fool hears and will not, his prisoners from him.
[27:55] Let hell and earth and Jesus embrace, and all that will in them.
[28:10] For God will trick the cities build, and he will Zion save.
[28:25] That they may dwell therein and this in true conception have.
[28:40] And they that are his sermons see, in heaven it shall the same.
[28:57] So shall they have their dwelling there, that love his blessed name.
[29:27] And we can read again at verse 23. O Jesus answered them, saying, The hour has come that the Son of Man should be glorified.
[29:40] Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone. But if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.
[29:57] Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone.
[30:11] Our familiarity with the Gospel ensures that we understand that a great many people took an interest in the person of the Lord Jesus Christ.
[30:26] They were interested in him and they sought him out. And there's no question but that at a certain time in his life, He was the focus of the attention of many of the cities and the towns of the region.
[30:55] But the reasons for that interest varied. They would like to think that some had a genuine interest in him because of the interest they had in the welfare of their soul.
[31:12] But that is clearly not the case. There were, of course, some who did understand that he had something of relevance to say to them regarding their spiritual well-being.
[31:30] But in the chapter here, we find that there were a number of people who had gathered to Jerusalem as was their practice at a festival occasion.
[31:46] They would come and they would fulfil their righteousness according to the law. And while they were there, no doubt they took the opportunity of seeking Christ out.
[32:04] You can imagine for yourself that when there are crowds gathered, there would be discussions, there would be debates, there would be conversations, there would be rumours and all kinds of exchange of information.
[32:25] And on the basis of that, some people would get to know that this person, Christ, was near Jerusalem at the time. And they would make a point of wanting to see him.
[32:39] Curiosity, if nothing else, would set them on that course. We read here as well that there was the added interest. In the previous chapter, we read of the resurrection of Lazarus.
[32:53] Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead. And there was curiosity in connection with the passion of Lazarus himself.
[33:04] It's interesting that when you read this chapter, it tells you some people wanted to see Lazarus. They put him on the same platform as it were as Jesus, who raised him from the dead.
[33:18] And that, I think, unveils to you the kind of curiosity that was piqued in them. They wanted to see this man who was dead and who was alive, just as much as they wanted to see the man who was responsible for bringing about that miracle.
[33:40] But that is just one reason among many. We read also that some were Greeks who came.
[33:52] What that means is probably if they were there attending the places of worship, they were there as proselytes, converts to the Jewish faith.
[34:08] They probably came from Greek-speaking nations and they came to pay homage to their newfound religion, if that was indeed what it was.
[34:19] But they came, nevertheless, and they made indirect contact with Christ through the disciples. And what did they hear would not come as a surprise to them?
[34:40] Because what we read in verse 23 here, the hour has come that the Son of Man should be glorified. Well, if they come expecting to find the Messiah, then it falls into place that the Messiah is going to be revealed.
[35:00] And the Messiah is the new king that will be enthroned. And he will take the head of his people and they will be there amongst others, seeing that unveiling and seeing that enthronement.
[35:16] So, to speak of the Son of Man being glorified falls into place as what they would expect to see if indeed Christ was the Messiah.
[35:28] But, unfortunately for them, the picture that they created in their mind concerning Christ did not actually fit together with the reality of what was going to happen.
[35:48] It did not fit with their thinking.
[36:18] Pending death. And he did so with remarkable clarity. But because their minds were so earthbound and lacking in spiritual discernment, they could not marry what they thought was going to happen with what Christ said was going to happen.
[36:44] And I think this is exemplified in the reaction that we have on the part of Peter. You remember, when Jesus spoke to the disciples, you very seldom read about what went on in the minds of the disciples.
[37:08] But you very often hear what was going on in the mind of the apostle Peter. Peter usually speaks his mind probably without taking much time to engage his thinking.
[37:23] He just blurts out what is on his mind. Now, he probably gets a bad press because he speaks his mind. But he was probably saying the very thing that the other disciples were thinking.
[37:38] And on this occasion, he blurted out what he felt. And he took Jesus and he began to rebuke him.
[37:49] Isn't that amazing? He rebuked Jesus because Jesus taught the disciples about the need that he had to die.
[38:05] In Mark's gospel, we read, he began to teach them that the son of man must suffer many things and be rejected of the elders and of the chief priests and scribes and be killed and after three days rise again.
[38:26] That was what Jesus told the disciples. And Jesus was rebuked by Peter for saying that. And then what happens?
[38:37] Well, we read in the same gospel that Jesus has to rebuke Peter. In these words that are familiar to you, I'm sure. Get thee behind me, Satan, for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but the things that be of men.
[38:56] Now, all of that is important. And it comes as a back cloth to what we have here.
[39:07] The hour has come that the son of man should be glorified. It is something that is something that probably is in the mind of the vast number of people.
[39:21] Those who are the followers, the genuine followers of Jesus and those who are expecting some kind of messianic arrival.
[39:35] They don't really know who the son of man is. That is a self-designation on the part of Jesus. But if Jesus is this Messiah, then surely it is the fact that he will be glorified at some point.
[39:52] And they are together in this mindset. But what we have in this verse that we're looking at this evening is a truth that is unpalatable.
[40:07] A truth that they find difficult to accept. That the corn of wheat has to fall into the ground and die.
[40:20] In other words, Jesus in this very vivid world picture is telling them a truth that is inconsistent with their understanding of what Jesus is in the world to do.
[40:41] And that's really the first thing I want you to take on board. I want you to remember this teaching.
[40:52] I want you to remember what Jesus is dealing with here. Because you might be of a mindset where you understand perfectly well what Jesus is teaching.
[41:06] And you may be persuaded. Your faith is focused on a Christ who has been crucified.
[41:18] Who has died on the cross. Who has risen from the dead. Who has been exalted to the right hand of glory. You understand the truth as the scripture conveys it to you.
[41:31] It is the truth that you have placed your faith in as the means by which your salvation is secure. But you are in proximity.
[41:45] In close proximity to those who are in the world who deny that truth. Who cannot accept that truth. Who do not believe the truth to be the truth of God.
[41:58] And by being in proximity to such a belief. You yourself are someone who is in danger.
[42:08] If you allow the thinking that is prevalent in the world. And even prevalent in the church that bears the name of Christ. If you allow yourself to be influenced by it.
[42:21] You lose the grasp that you should have on the true nature of Christ's life and death on the cross.
[42:35] The illustration as I said is a simple one. If the seed does not die. There cannot be fruit. And the emphasis that Jesus wants us to take on board.
[42:52] Is underlined if you like. By this verily verily I say unto you. Accept a corn of wheat fall into the ground.
[43:05] It is certainly. Most definitely. I want you to take this to heart. I want you to believe with certainty.
[43:16] The truth that is conveyed to you here. Now there are plenty. Dare I say it. So called Christians. And.
[43:27] They may be. Genuine Christians amongst them. But they have a very tenuous grasp of the teaching. Of the. The death of Christ.
[43:39] As being at the heart of the gospel. For many. For many. Who bear the name Christian today. What's important to them. Is the teachings.
[43:52] Of the gospels. The teachings. That Christ. Is responsible for. The ethical content. Of his word. The.
[44:03] The. Teachings. That tell you. How to live your life. To be a good neighbor. How to be a faithful husband. How to be an honest employee. How to be.
[44:14] A good. Citizen. That's as far as. Their Christianity goes. Now I'm not saying. That your Christianity. Can be without that.
[44:24] It must not be without that. But if that's all. Your Christianity is about. It's lacking. The fundamental. Truth.
[44:36] That has to be. At the heart of what you believe. That Jesus Christ. Came into the world. To seek. And to save the lost. To die on the cross. So that sinners.
[44:46] Should by his. Death. Receive life. And that is not. Something that is.
[44:57] Acceptable. To many today. If it ever was. There are. There are plenty. Who have. Doctrinal.
[45:08] And creedal. Confessions. Which exclude. The fundamental. Doctrine. That has to do. With Christ's.
[45:19] Death. On the cross. Now. No doubt. His death. His death. On the cross. Does not accord.
[45:30] With this. Unsanctified. Mind. And unsanctified. Reasoning. Because. We've used.
[45:41] The expression. And it's been. Overused. Perhaps. By some. The butcher shop. Theology. Of the. Reformed.
[45:51] Tradition. That requires. The atonement. To be. By way. Of. The death. Of Christ. On the cross. Principal.
[46:04] Donald. MacLeod. In one of his books. Writes. The following. To Jewish. Years. The idea. Of a crucified. Messiah. Was a contradiction.
[46:15] In terms. To Gentiles. The claim. That the salvation. Of the world. Had to come. Through a crucified. Criminal. Was an absurdity.
[46:26] To both. Jew. And Gentile. The suggestion. That death. Particularly. Death. On a cross. Would bring. Eternal life. Was.
[46:37] Blasphemous. Idiocy. That is. Whether. Whether you are able. To formulate. Your thoughts.
[46:49] As. Concisely. As that. That is. The way. Many people. Think. That is. The way. They. Regard. The teaching.
[47:00] Of the gospel. Regarding. The death. Of Christ. Jesus. Is saying. To us here. Accept. A corn. Of wheat. Fall. Into the ground. And die. That.
[47:11] Abideth. Alone. And he is not. Talking about. Anybody else. But himself. And he is not. Talking about. Any other death. But his own. And he is.
[47:23] Talking about it. Because. It needs. To be. Impressed. Upon the mind. And the heart. Of every individual. That without the cross.
[47:35] Salvation. Is not possible. And it is not. What we think. That matters. We should.
[47:46] Know that. But what. When the. Contradictory. Message. Is the one. You hear most. From the world. Around you. Then you.
[47:57] Shall be. Wise. If you are. On alert. To anything. That undermines. The truth. That Christ. Conveys to us. In the gospel. In the gospel. You know.
[48:10] We have. We have. Just got over. The presidency. Of Donald Trump. And he championed. This. This. Description.
[48:22] Of fake news. Anything. That was opposed. To his own. Planning. Or his own. Ideas. It was.
[48:32] Dismissed. It was airbrushed. Away. As fake news. Don't listen to this. As nonsense. But that is. That is not. Something. That is new.
[48:44] There always. Been. This element. At the heart. Of this world. Where. Where. The truth. Is disputed.
[48:55] And the dispute. And the dispute. Is carried out. In a way. Where. Falsity. Is put. In its place.
[49:07] And presented. As truth. In. In. In. In. In. In. In. In. In our own.
