[0:00] We are going to sing some verses now from Psalm 110. Psalm 110, from the beginning of the psalm, the first five stanzas.
[0:12] The Lord did say unto my Lord, sit thou at my right hand, e to let it make thy foes a stone, whereon thy feet may stand.
[0:23] The Lord shall out of Zion send the rod of thy great power, in midst of all thine enemies be thou the governor. A willing people in thy day of power shall come to thee, in holy beauties from morn's womb thy youth like Jew shall be.
[0:41] The Lord himself hath made an oath and will repent him never, the order of Melchizedek, thou art a priest for ever. The glorious and mighty Lord that sits at thy right hand shall in his day of wrath strike through.
[0:57] Kings that do him withstand. These verses the Lord did say unto my Lord, sit thou at my right hand. The Lord did say unto my Lord, sit thou at my right hand, until I make thy cross a stone, whereon thy feet may stand.
[1:41] The Lord shall out of Zion send the rod of thy great power.
[1:58] In the midst of all thine enemies be thou the governor. In the midst of all thine enemies be thou the governor.
[2:13] The Lord shall come to thee, in holy beauties from morn's womb, the Lord shall come to thee. The Lord shall come to thee, in holy beauties from morn's womb, the Lord shall come to thee. In holy beauties from morn's womb, thy good light you shall be.
[2:26] The Lord shall come to thee, in holy beauties from morn's womb, the Lord shall come to thee. in holy beauties from morn's womb, the Lord shall come to thee.
[2:39] In holy beauties from morn's womb, thy good light you shall be. In holy cube-tooth no coveties from morn's actually now, and hath ardent in those moments.
[3:12] CMDth reing the Lord on earth All right.
[3:53] Things like your name will shine. And the man who was raised up on high, the anointed of the God of Jacob, and the sweet psalmist of Israel said, The Spirit of the Lord spake by me, and his word was in my tongue.
[4:39] The God of Israel said, The Rock of Israel spake to me. He that ruleth over men must be just, ruling in the fear of God. And he shall be as the light of the morning, when the sun riseth, even a morning without clouds, as the tender grass springing out of the earth by clear shining after rain.
[5:04] Particularly these words, He that ruleth over men must be just, ruling in the fear of God.
[5:15] And he shall be as the light of the morning, when the sun rises. I'm sure you're all aware of the preoccupation that there is of the present to celebrate the jubilee of Her Majesty the Queen.
[5:37] And the nation marks a role that has extended over many decades.
[5:49] And her duty and her observation of her duty as Queen is notable and commendable.
[6:06] But the scripture identifies for us a reign that extends beyond the years that any one of us can mark.
[6:22] And it speaks to us of an elevated role that far exceeds the occupancy of anything.
[6:36] And it speaks to us of an elevated role that we have been given by any individual that we could name. In the verses before us, it invites questions as to who David the King is speaking about.
[6:59] And clearly he is identifying someone. Whose reign is going to be of the highest order.
[7:14] Now, I suppose that there is a difference of opinion as to these words when they were uttered.
[7:25] At what stage in David's life he spoke in this way. And there is a division of opinion. And there is a division of opinion. Because we read two portions and both passages indicated that these were the last words of David.
[7:43] In what sense are they the last words of David? Our inclination would be to think that this was a deathbed statement.
[7:57] And clearly the first portion that we read speaks of his death. And this life coming to an end.
[8:08] But the words that are spoken are directed towards his son. Who will take the throne upon his death. And the advice that he gives.
[8:21] It doesn't necessarily follow that his last words are to be curtailed to the last moments of his earthly existence.
[8:32] You may think of it like this. When we think of somebody that we know. That we remember their last words to us.
[8:44] Their last words to us might be spoken from their deathbed. But to others their last words to them might have been spoken in a totally different context.
[9:00] Maybe at some point prior to their death. But as far as you're concerned they were their last words to you.
[9:17] Even though our days, weeks might have passed since that point. So it may be in a sense like that that we need to think of David's last words.
[9:29] As being the last recorded words that the Lord has seen to bring to our attention. Because it is his hand on the pen that records these words to us.
[9:42] Whatever means are used by him to bring these words to our attention. We read in 1 Kings. How the charge that was given by David is very specific.
[10:06] To his son in one sense anyway. I go the way of all the earth. Be thou strong therefore and show thyself a man.
[10:16] Keep the charge of the Lord thy God to walk in his ways. To keep his statutes and his commandments. And his judgments, his testimonies. As it is written in the law of Moses.
[10:27] That thou mayest prosper in all that thou doest. And whithersoever thou turnest thyself. That the Lord may continue his word which he spoke concerning me.
[10:39] And so on. Words of counsel. Words of advice that is given to the one who is going to follow after him. But I think the words that we have here.
[10:55] They span the reign of all who are but four shadows of the king of kings.
[11:08] Every king of Israel that God suffered to. Anoint by his prophets.
[11:18] By his priests. Were but types of the king of kings. Some of them lived up to their calling.
[11:32] Many did not. Solomon for all his wisdom. Had many defects. For all the glories that would be spoken of.
[11:43] As glories that speak of a glory that is Christ's. They are still types. They are still shadows of the true glory of Christ.
[11:54] And. I think that's where we must begin. To understand these words. We must understand that.
[12:06] While. The last days of David. May have within it. The advice that you would expect. A father to give to his son.
[12:17] Who is going to occupy. His. Throne. At the same time. We find in it. The prophetic.
[12:28] Revelation. Of one beyond. That. Occupancy. Who would be greater. As Christ himself said.
[12:40] Regarding. His own person. That there is one greater than Solomon here. And. While there is. You know yourself.
[12:52] Any part of scripture. That there is. Obviously. Those who will debate. And debate very strongly. The.
[13:03] Meanings. Of. Certain scriptures. And. Try and. Insist. That this is what David had in mind. That he had. Purely.
[13:14] And simply. The dynasty. The. The Davidic dynasty. That. That was going to follow. And that was his concern. That there is one king.
[13:26] In particular. Upon which his heart. And mind is fixed. And that is. The person of the Lord. Jesus Christ. And.
[13:38] We see. In the words. There. A prophetic. Announcement. Of the only. True king of Israel.
[13:49] And the only one. Of whom. These words. Can. Truly be said. He. That ruleth. Over men. Must be just. Ruling in the fear of God.
[14:01] And. We will just. Think about. The way. In which. Christ. Fulfils. This picture. That is. Drawn by.
[14:12] His servant. David. Albeit. Prophetically. How. Can we think. Of these words. Being fulfilled. In the person. Of the Lord.
[14:23] Jesus Christ. And we are encouraged. To do so. When we think. Of Christ. The broader. Of perspective. Of his. Of his.
[14:35] Ministry. The better. We need to think. Of his. Role. As our prophet. Our priest. And our king.
[14:46] And how he is. Occupying these. Most gloriously. Now the Old Testament. Scriptures. Quite apart from. This prophetic.
[15:00] Declaration. Because that's what it is. From the mouth of. David. David. The Old Testament. Prophets. They had a vision. Of. The.
[15:11] The one. Who was going to be. God's anointed. When we go back to. The. Way in which. Samuel.
[15:22] Anointed. Saul. As king. Much. Against. Much. Against. His own. His own. Inclination. And certainly.
[15:33] Against. God's. Revealed will. Nevertheless. There was. An understanding. There. That. The. The. The anointing.
[15:43] Of God. Was necessary. For the true. Fulfillment. Of that. Office. And the king. As Christ. As king.
[15:54] Is one. That is anointed. Above measure. If you look at. The prophecies. Of Isaiah. There. There are several. There are passages. There. That remind us.
[16:05] Of the. Gifts. And the. Graces. That Christ. Was endowed with. In order. To fulfill. The offices. That were his. We can speak of him.
[16:17] As divine. That is. Something that he is. And was. And always will be. But there were. Aspects.
[16:29] To his office. That God. Publicly. And. Loudly. Declared. Were. Necessary. For him.
[16:40] To fulfill. The role. That he was. To fulfill. In Isaiah. Chapter 9. For unto us. A child is born. Unto us. A son is given.
[16:51] And the government. Shall be upon his shoulder. And his name. Shall be called. Wonderful. Counselor. The mighty God. The everlasting father.
[17:03] Prince of peace. Of the increase. Of his government. And peace. There shall be no end. Upon the throne of David. And upon his kingdom. To order it.
[17:14] And establish it. With judgment. And with justice. From henceforth. Even forever. The seal of the Lord of hosts. Will perform it.
[17:25] Later on. In the same prophecy. Behold. A king. Shall reign. In righteousness. And princes. Shall rule.
[17:36] In judgment. Chapter 33. For the Lord. Is our judge. The Lord. Is our lawgiver. The Lord. Is our king.
[17:48] He. Will. Save us. And. Many. Other passages. Besides. Within. The prophecy of Isaiah.
[17:58] And within. The other prophets. Also. We have the prophet. Zechariah. And. The Lord Jesus. If we. If you were in any doubt. About this.
[18:09] Takes the words. Of the prophet. And. He applies. These words. To himself. Remember. When he was. Making his way. To Jerusalem.
[18:21] And. We read there. Fear not. Daughter of Zion. Behold. Thy king. Cometh. Sitting on. Anassas. Colt. And.
[18:32] There. He applies. These words. He is not. Ashamed. He is not. Embarrassed. He is not. In any doubt. As to. Who. These words. Are speaking about.
[18:43] These words. Apply to him. And his rule. And his reign. As king. Someone. Who is.
[18:54] Ruling. In the fear. Of God. Oh. There you're saying. How can the Lord. Jesus Christ. Be someone. Who. Rules. In the fear.
[19:04] Of God. Well. The fear. Of God. Is the beginning. Of wisdom. We are told. And although. Solomon. Is renowned. For his wisdom.
[19:15] There are clear. Evidences. That. His reign. Was marred. By his foolishness. For all. His wisdom.
[19:26] As it was. Dependent. Upon God. It. Caused. His reign. To suffer. And it was. It was. It was. It was. It was. It was. It was. It was. It was. The beginning. Of the end.
[19:37] As far. As the Davidic dynasty. Was concerned. But how can we speak. Of this king. As a king. Who rules. In the fear.
[19:47] Of the Lord. Well. If the Lord. Jesus Christ. Was to be a savior. To sinners. He had to fulfill. All righteousness.
[19:59] He had to. Not only. Be. Someone. Who is. The lawgiver. Of Israel. He had to. Submit. To the law.
[20:11] He had to. Fulfill. The law. And. There is no. Point. At which. It can be said. Of him. He was accused. Of being.
[20:21] A lawbreaker. He was. It was alleged. Concerning him. That. God's. Judgment. Was upon him. Because. He was. A lawbreaker.
[20:33] But. Because. He lived. In the fear. Of the Lord. As one. Who not only. Kept the law. But honoured the law. That he clearly. Evidenced. The place.
[20:44] That he gave the law. And the God. Who gave the law. In his life. A perfect. Conformity. Within. His life.
[20:55] And within. The relationship. That he possessed. With the Lord. God. In heaven. And the spirit. Of the Lord. That. Demonstrated.
[21:06] Who he was. When Paul. Preaches. In his epistle. To Timothy. We read there. Now unto the king. Eternal. Immortal.
[21:17] Invisible. The only wise God. Be honour. And glory. Forever. And ever. Amen. Is he speaking there. About. God. The father.
[21:29] Or is he. Speaking more about. The Lord Jesus Christ. And I think from the context. You could argue that that is the case. In verse four.
[21:42] We continue. He shall be as the light of the morning. When the sun. Rises. Can we think of a particular rain. Of any king.
[21:52] No matter how remarkable the rain was. No matter how it can be said of them. At some point. In their. In their role. In God's name.
[22:03] That they. Were. Perfectly. Conformed. To the will of God. To the degree that their. That their. That their role.
[22:13] Even David's role. Is highlighted. He was a man of the God's heart. But we know. That God. Forbidden. From building. The temple. Because his.
[22:24] Hands. Were stained. With the blood. Of many. And here. It speaks. Of someone. Who. Is. Going to be.
[22:34] As the light. Of the morning. A very. Very. Very. Interesting. Picture. Of. The kind. Of rain.
[22:46] That is spoken of. Perhaps. It gives to us. A glimpse. Of glory. That is. His. Uniquely. Yes. We can speak.
[22:57] Of the glory. Of Solomon. We can speak. Of all the things. That identify. Him. As someone. Who. Possessed. Unique. Gifts.
[23:07] And he had. Great riches. And many. Admired him. But. The king. That is spoken of. Here. Is. Greatly.
[23:20] Greatly. Above. Any. Earthly king. He. Shall. Be like. And. There are two. Distinct. Images.
[23:30] The brightness. Of the sun. The second. The. The grass. And I suppose. That's. Harder. To. To. Understand. As tender. Grass.
[23:41] Springing out. Of the earth. By clear. Shining. After the rain. I think. Possibly. The imagery. There. Has a lot. To do. With. The terrain. And the.
[23:52] The. A feature. Of. Of. Of. The land. Which. No. Strought.
[24:03] And which. No. Parched. Ground. And when the. When the rain comes. It comes. Bringing. With it. The extra. Dimension.
[24:15] The glory. Of. The land. Clothed. With grass. And the sun. Shining. Upon it. Sparkling. In its. In its. Luster.
[24:26] Now. Whether that's. The correct. Image. Or not. What we. Understand. About the. Passion. Of the Lord. Jesus Christ. The son. Of God.
[24:37] Who is. The king. Of kings. He is promised. To a sin. Darkened world. And the dark. Of the night. Of this world.
[24:49] Is like. No other dark. And when he. Comes. To bring. His light. To bear. Upon the sinner. That resides. In that darkness.
[25:01] The promises. Of God. Are many. Concerning. The change. That is wrought. By him. Again. Looking to the prophets. Of the old testament. Hosea.
[25:13] Chapter 6. Then shall we know. If we follow. On to know. The Lord. His going forth. Is prepared. As the morning. And he shall come.
[25:24] And to us. As the rain. As the latter. And former rain. On the earth. His coming. His. His descent.
[25:35] Into this world. In his nature. As the God man. Is something that. Is significant. Just as the new dawn. Breaks the darkness.
[25:48] So. The son of man. When he comes. With healing. In his wings. He brings. He brings light. Where there was no light. Before. And the old.
[25:59] The old testament. Promises. It is. Sprinkled. Throughout. Each one. Of these old testament. Saints. As they.
[26:11] Anticipate. With longing. What the coming. Of the king. Of kings. Will bring. How. How. They will see it. How they will. Understand it.
[26:22] I read a piece. By. By John Gill. And. His. His. Take on it.
[26:33] I suppose. When. He goes. Right back. To the beginning. Right back. To. The fall. Of man. And. Well. We spoke. Of it. Ourselves.
[26:44] Recently. The difference. That was. In the experience. Of our first parents. When sin. Came into their lives. How they were.
[26:55] After sin. As opposed. To how they were. Before sin. And. Gill. Was saying this. The night. Of black. Darkness. That.
[27:06] That. Encompassed. The soul. Of sinful. Adam. He could. See. No way. Of escape. From the wrath. Of God. He had.
[27:17] No hint. Of a savior. He was. As much. Without. The knowledge. Of one. Or any hope. Of salvation. As the.
[27:28] Blindest. Heathen. That ever. Lived. Do you believe. That. That. That. That. Was. The spiritual. Condition. Of Adam.
[27:39] As a. Consequence. Of the soul. He was. As much. Without. The knowledge. Of a savior. Or any hope. Of salvation.
[27:50] By a savior. As the. Blindest. Heathen. That ever. Lived. And he. Goes on. The first. Dawn. Of light.
[28:01] Came. With the promise. The seed. Of the woman. Shall bruise. The serpent's head. A ray. Of light. Dirted. Into.
[28:11] Adam's. Mind. And that's a picture. If you like. Very. Difficult. Difficult. Picture. To. Embrace.
[28:22] Because. We can't. Imagine. The extremity. Into which. Sin. Brought Adam. Instantly. And yes. That's the way.
[28:33] It was. And. The gospel. Promises. That are. Punctuating. The whole. Of the old. Testament. Remind us. Of.
[28:44] What the lord. Jesus Christ. Was going to do. And. Asking. His role. As it is spoken of here. He shall be.
[28:55] As the light. Of the morning. He. That ruleth. Over men. Must be just. And his reign. His rule.
[29:06] His sovereign. Over lordship. Of. His own people. Requires him. To be submissive. To the law. And to be obedient.
[29:17] To the law. And to be administering. That law. Of. Perfectly. And only. A holy. Righteous. Saviour. Could do that.
[29:28] When we see. His. Coming into the experience. Of. The world. And those. Who are of the world.
[29:38] And in the world. Whatever. Pace. The light. Coming. Takes. Whether it comes. Gradually. Or whether it comes. With.
[29:50] With a great rush. It's hard for us. To imagine. That that. Could be the case. But sometimes. There is a sudden.
[30:01] Brilliant. Realisation. Of. The light. And. Maybe that's the way it is. With the lord. Jesus Christ. The morning.
[30:13] Without. Clouds. Nothing. To hide. The brilliance. Of that. Saviour. The second image. Is not the sun. But the effect.
[30:24] Of the sun. On the grass. After the rain. I'm not sure. As I said. If that. If that. Understanding. Is correct. Understanding. But it's certainly. A possible.
[30:35] Understanding. Some say. That it is. The sun. That is spoken of. Here. But that is not. What the words say. Literally. In the growing season. Particularly.
[30:46] Where there are cycles. Of drought. And rainy. The effect. Is very. Not to suffer. And. Preacher. Matthew. Henry. I think.
[30:57] Refers. To the words. Of. Of. Isaiah. Again. In chapter. 4. That day. Shall the branch. Of the lord. Be beautiful. And glorious. And the fruit.
[31:08] Of the earth. Shall be excellent. And comely. For them. That are escaped. Of Israel. It's referring. There. To the people. Of God. Who experience.
[31:18] Salvation. And is it. Not the fruit. Of this king. That. Edifies. The people.
[31:28] Of God. That sustains them. Do they not. Feast. On the blessings. Of his grace. Day by day. And will they. Not be doing. So for all. Eternity.
[31:39] And because. He is king. And because. He is king. Of kings. That. Will inevitably. Be the case. It will not. It will not change.
[31:51] Nothing can change. Because his power. Is. Not going to be. Diminished. With the passage. Of time. His rule. Is not going to be.
[32:03] Passed over. To another. David. Had to. Yield. Because. Because. It was. The end.
[32:14] Of his days. Whenever that came. However it came. It was. Root large. That. That he. He died. Like every other.
[32:25] Saint. They will die. Like every other. Sinner. They will die. Like every other. King. They will die. But not this one. This is a king.
[32:36] Who sits on the throne. And his reign. Who is as we saw. In the first psalm. A reign that will. Never end. It will go on. And.
[32:47] There are words. That are. Attributed to. The Rutherford. But they were written by. And Ross. Cousins. The sands of time.
[32:58] Are sinking. And. They refer to the glory. Of this king. The glory of this. Risen lord. The glory of this. King.
[33:08] Who occupies. The throne in heaven. The bride. Eyes not her garment. But her dear. Bride groom's face. I will not. Gaze at glory. But on my king.
[33:19] Of grace. Not that the crown he giveth. But on his pierced hand. The lamb is all the glory. Of Emmanuel's land. My king.
[33:32] Of grace. Can you say that often? My king. Of grace. I think that in writer. Was very much. Guided.
[33:44] In her thoughts. By the scripture. That teaches us. That this. Is the source of all. The saving grace. And that he is the one.
[33:55] Who will ensure. That the rod of his power. Is extended towards all. His subjects. And. He ensures that. All that is necessary.
[34:07] For their. Complete salvation. Will be fulfilled. That's our. Lord and saviour. Christ Jesus. King. Of kings. Lord over all.
[34:20] And may. God bless to us. These thoughts. Let us pray. Ever blessed God. We give thanks. That there is a king. Whose reign is.
[34:31] Without end. There are many. Rulers. Of which. The history books. Of this world. Of this world. Speaks. Some of them. Were despots.
[34:42] Some of them. Were benevolent. In their role. Some were like. Solomon. Who were renowned. For their. Reaches. And for their glory.
[34:54] And for their. Wisdom. And yet. That reign. Came to an end. But there is one. Ruler. Who is all glorious.
[35:04] And he sits. At your right hand. And we thank you. For him. That he came. To. Fulfill. All righteousness. And that he.
[35:15] He ever. Liveth. As the great. Priest. King. Of his people. The. Messiah. The anointed. Of God. The one.
[35:26] Who has. Anunction. From on high. To fulfill. All that. You and your. Wisdom. So fit. For him to. To carry out.
[35:36] On behalf of his people. May we. See. In particular. And may we see. In. The fullness. All that is there.
[35:48] To be spoken of. And to be. Thought about. What over is each one. Cleanse from our sins. In Jesus name. Amen. I'm going to.
[36:00] Conclude singing. Some verses. In. In garlic. From Sam 36. Sam 36.
[36:10] At verse 9. Topeth. Na beha hake. Jara. Bagget. Sae. Ya. Na. Nô. Saan. Ad. Ad. Ad. Ad. Ad. Ad. Ad. Ad. Ad.
