[3:56] Can we, for a short time, turn to the passage we read together, the 2nd Epistle of Paul to And chapter 3, we can read at the beginning of the chapter.
[4:15] Finally, brethren, pray for us that the word of the Lord may have free course and be glorified even as it is with you. And that we may be delivered from unreasonable and wicked men.
[4:29] For all men have not faith. But the Lord is faithful who shall establish you and keep you from evil. And we have confidence in the Lord touching you.
[4:40] That ye both do and will do the things which we command you. And the Lord direct your hearts unto the love of God. And into the patient waiting for Christ.
[4:55] And so on. Particularly the words of verse 5. And the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God. As you can see the concluding part of this epistle.
[5:14] Paul returns to a theme that dominates many of his epistles. The theme of prayer.
[5:26] And the need there is for it. The necessity that there is for it. It is not a selfish prayer.
[5:38] Although he wants the recipients of the epistle to pray for him. A prayer or prayers that are necessary for the furtherance of the cause of Christ.
[6:00] Well I don't want to personalise this. I do believe that every preacher of the gospel.
[6:11] Is aware of the prayers of God's people. And also equally aware of the lack of prayer.
[6:26] On the part of God's people. While very often what the preacher does.
[6:37] Does is he. He points the finger at his own breast. And his own. Spiritual. Lethargy.
[6:48] And I suppose that is inevitable. But there is a sense in which. God has. Bequeathed us his spirit.
[7:00] So that. We avail ourselves of the provision that he makes for us. As a church. And part of that provision.
[7:13] Is. The facility that God's people have. Of an access. To a throne of grace. And if that access is.
[7:23] Abused or. If it is ignored. It is inevitable. That. What he has purposed for it. Will suffer.
[7:36] And that's why you find Paul. Frequently. Aware of his own. Deficiencies and weakness. He.
[7:47] He petitions. Or he. Solicits the help. Of. The people of God. So that his labor.
[7:57] Shall not. In vain. So that his. Endeavor. To further. The cause of Christ. Is not.
[8:08] A forlorn hope. On his part. That the. The word of the Lord. May have free course. What do you make of that?
[8:20] What do you think that means? I think it means anyway. Probably return to that thought. Let there. Be no hindrance.
[8:32] To it. Hindrances. That are outside of. Ourselves. And hindrances. That are within ourselves.
[8:43] Who are. Hearers of the word. That. Prohibits us. Or. That. Frustrates. That. Frustrates. The word. Producing.
[8:56] In us. The fruit. That is expected. He wants. The glory. The glory. For God.
[9:07] Not himself. And he wants. The good of his cause. And his people. To be. Preeminent.
[9:18] In the thinking. Of those. Who. Who do pray. In the previous. Epistle. As he concludes. He wants.
[9:29] His people. Same people. That he is writing. As the epistle. To. To pray. Without ceasing. That's a hard thing.
[9:40] To do. It's not something. That any one of us. Can do. Acceptably. Or with any. Measure. Of satisfaction. Our prayers.
[9:51] Are often. A cause. Of. Shame. To us. When he.
[10:01] Writes. His epistle. To the Colossians. He says. Continue in prayer. And watch. In the same. With thanksgiving. Meanwhile.
[10:13] Praying. Also. For us. That God. Would open. To us. A door. Of utterance. Or a door. For the word. Of God. To speak. The mystery.
[10:27] Of Christ. For which I am. Also. In bonds. And it's not. Really. There are.
[10:38] Many. Gifted. Men. And indeed. Women. Within. The church. Of Christ. But men. Particularly. Who preach. The gospel. Gifted men.
[10:50] Men. Of great. Ability. But it's not. Based on their ability. That they. Are able to. Rightly. Divide. The word. Of God. Or to. Preach.
[11:01] And proclaim. A Christ. That. That is. Not just. Acceptable. But. A Christ.
[11:12] That is. Effectual. As a student. I remember. With. Fellow students.
