[0:00] Good evening. Good evening. Let me welcome you this evening to our evening worship here at Calanish Free Church.! Let me just also extend our gratitude for your hospitality, for your welcome, for your generosity to us as a family.
[0:17] We greatly appreciate it and it's lovely to be here to share with you in worship and also around God's Word. We spent some time this morning in the first half of Mark chapter 6 and this evening we're going to look at the second half of that chapter and be called to come to a feast that satisfies.
[0:39] Let's hear the words of Psalm 146 to lead us in our praise and then we'll sing a version of this psalm together. Praise ye the Lord. Praise the Lord, O my soul. While I live I will praise the Lord. I will sing praises unto my God while I have any being.
[1:02] Put not your trust in princes, nor in the Son of Man in whom there is no help. His breath goeth forth. He returneth to his earth. He returneth to his earth in that very day his thoughts perish.
[1:14] Happy is he that hath the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the Lord his God, which made heaven and earth the sea and all that therein is, which keepeth truth forever, which executes judgment for the oppressed, which giveth food to the hungry.
[1:34] The Lord looseth the prisoners. The Lord openeth the eyes of the blind. The Lord raiseth them that are bowed down. The Lord loveth the righteous. The Lord preserveth the strangers. He relieveth the fatherless and widow.
[1:50] But the way of the wicked he turneth upside down. The Lord shall reign forever. Even thy God, O Zion, unto all generations. Praise ye the Lord.
[2:04] Well, let's sing this psalm to God's praise. Praise God. The Lord praise, O my soul. I'll praise God while I live. Psalm 146.
[2:14] Praise God. The Lord praise, O my soul.
[2:26] I'll praise God while I live. While I have been to my God. In song I'll praise him.
[2:53] I'll praise God. I'll praise God. I'll praise God. I'll praise God. I'll praise God. I'll praise God. I'll praise God. I'll praise God.
[3:04] I'll praise God. His grace be part to earth.
[3:17] He turns that day is so key. O happy is God the Lamb and blessed whom Jacob's God gave.
[3:46] His hope upon the Lord of Christ and on His rocket's day.
[4:04] To meet the earth and heavens high. To meet the swelling deep.
[4:22] And all that is within the state. Whose truth shall never be.
[4:40] The righteous child's message is good. For those of the best I need.
[4:56] Who do the hungry do that good. God sets the prisoners free.
[5:12] The Lord does give the blind their sight. The beloved down the grace.
[5:30] The Lord does hear me. The Lord does not walk in the bright ways.
[5:47] The angels yield. The wood in whose state. The orphans have their sea.
[6:04] But yet by Him the wicked's way. Turned up thy dirt shall be.
[6:21] The Lord shall reign forevermore. By God goes high on ye.
[6:39] Praise to all generations. Praise to the Lord give me.
[6:56] Praise to the Lord. Praise to the Lord. Let's stand and we'll pray together. Our Lord God and our Father in heaven.
[7:11] We come to you. And we acknowledge that you are the one. Who made all things. You are the great creator God. You are the one who made the heaven.
[7:24] The earth and all that is in them. The depths of the sea are yours. Lord you stretched out the heavens. You call the stars by name.
[7:36] Your name is majestic in all the earth. Lord we praise you as the one who was. The one who is. And the one who is to come.
[7:48] Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The one who is sovereign over time. Over history. Over the nations. Over redemption.
[7:59] And yet Lord as great and as exalted as you are. You delight that we would draw near to you. And come to you as your children. And so we come with confidence.
[8:12] Coming in the name of our Savior. The Lord Jesus. And Lord we have been exhorted this morning. To follow him. And to turn to him.
[8:23] And to consider the cost. And the difficulty that is involved in doing so. Lord we pray that you would strengthen us. We pray that you would encourage us in the gospel.
[8:34] Lord we have sung of the wonderful truths. Of what you do for us. That you have executed judgment for us. In the oppression of our sin. You have fed us with the bread of life.
[8:46] You have opened our eyes. And given us spiritual sight and life. Lord you have raised us up. As we are burdened and bowed down with our sin. Lord you have brought us into your family.
[8:59] Made us your children. And we can call you our Father. How we praise you Lord. And how we thank you. And how we would ask that you would give us a sight of that which is unseen.
[9:10] And that you would help us to grasp with firmer hand. Through the eye of faith. That you are the one who reigns forever. Our God. To all generations.
[9:22] Lord come. And meet with your people here this evening. As we open your word. And as we call upon your name. We ask for your presence. For your enabling power.
[9:33] Your help to be present with us. For without which we can do nothing at all. Lord hear us. Help us. And bless us as we gather together. For we ask in Jesus name.
[9:46] Amen. We are going to turn then. For our Bible reading. To Mark chapter 6. Mark chapter 6.
[9:59] And we will pick up from verse 30. And we will read to the end. Of the chapter. This morning was a call to.
[10:14] To realism. And to repentance. In following the Lord Jesus. This evening. As we consider. How the Lord feeds the 5,000.
[10:27] And also. Walks and is the master of the sea. We are going to be called to. Come to a feast that satisfies. And if there was. If there was.
[10:39] Realism and repentance. In the morning. Then we are going to be called. Come to rest. And find satisfaction. In the Lord Jesus.
[10:50] This evening. Let's hear. His word then. And we pick up from where we left off. This morning. As the apostles gather. Having been sent out on mission. They then gather themselves together.
[11:02] Unto Jesus. Mark 6 verse 30. Let's hear. The word of God. And the apostles gathered themselves together. Unto Jesus. And told him all things.
[11:14] Both what they had done. And what they had taught. And he said unto them. Come ye yourselves apart. Into a desert place. And rest a while.
[11:25] For there were many coming. And going. And they had no leisure. So much. As to eat. Eat. And they departed. Into a desert place.
[11:36] By ship privately. And the people saw them departing. And many knew him. And ran a foot thither. Out of all the cities. And out went them. And came together.
[11:47] Unto him. And Jesus. When he had came out. Saw much people. And was moved. With compassion. Towards them. Because they were his sheep. Not having a shepherd. And he began.
[11:58] To teach them. Many things. And when the day. Was now far spent. His disciples. Came unto him. And said. This is a desert place. And now the time. Is far past.
[12:09] Send them away. That they may go. Into the country. Round about. And into the villages. And buy themselves bread. For they have nothing. To eat. He answered. And said unto them.
[12:20] Give ye them. To eat. And they say unto him. Shall we go. Two hundred penny worth. Of bread. And give them to eat. He said unto them. How many loaves. Have ye.
[12:31] Go and see. And when they knew. They say. Five. And two fishes. And he commanded them. All sit down. By companies. Upon the green grass.
[12:42] And they sat down. In ranks. By hundreds. And by fifties. And when they had taken. The five loaves. And the two fishes. He looked up. And blessed. And break the loaves.
[12:53] And gave them. To his disciples. To set before them. And the two fishes. Divided he. Among them all. And they did. All eat. And were filled.
[13:04] Or were satisfied. And they took up. Twelve baskets. Full of the fragments. And of the fishes. And they that did eat. Of the loaves. Were about five thousand.
[13:16] Men. And straightly. And straightly. He constrained. His disciples. To get into the ship. And to go. To the other side. Before. Unto Bethsaida. While he sent away.
[13:27] The people. And when he had sent them away. He departed. Into a mountain. To pray. And when even was come. The ship was in the midst. Of the sea. And he alone. On the land. And he saw them.
[13:38] Toiling. In rowing. For the wind was contrary. Unto them. The fourth watch. Of the night. He cometh unto them. Walking. Upon the sea. And would have passed. By them.
[13:49] But when they saw him. Walking upon the sea. They supposed. It had been a spirit. And cried out. For they all saw him. And were troubled. And immediately. He talked with them. And saith unto them.
[14:00] Be of good cheer. It is I. Or I am. Be not afraid. And he went up. Into. And he went up. Unto them.
[14:11] Into the ship. And the wind ceased. And they were sore. Amazed. In themselves. Beyond measure. And wondered. For they. Considered not. The miracle.
[14:22] Of the loaves. For their heart. Was hardened. And when they had passed over. They came into the land. Of Gennesaret. And drew. To the shore. And when they were come.
[14:33] Out of the ship. Straightway. They knew him. And ran. Through the whole region. Round about. And began to carry. About in beds. Those that were sick. When they heard. Where they heard.
[14:44] He was. And whithersoever. He entered. Into villages. Or cities. Or country. They laid the sick. In the streets. And besought him. That they might touch him.
[14:55] If it were but. The border. Of his garment. And as many as touched him. Were made. Whole. The heavens. God's glory. Do declare. The skies.
[15:06] His handiwork. Preach. Day. Speech. Today. And night. To night. Doth knowledge. Teach. Teach. We'll stand.
[15:17] And we'll sing. Psalm 19. Verses 1. To 8. The heavens. God's glory. Do declare. The sky. His handiwork. Yours.
[15:28] Yours. Yours. Yours. Yours. Yours. Yours. Yours. Yours. Yours.
[15:40] God bless you.
[16:10] God bless you.
[16:40] God bless you.
[17:10] God bless you. God bless you. God bless you. God bless you.
[17:21] God bless you. God bless you. God bless you. God bless you. God bless you. God bless you.
[17:33] God bless you. God bless you. God bless you. God bless you. God bless you.
[17:45] God bless you. God bless you. God bless you. The soul in sin that lies God can't ignore me His posture And makes the simple wise The statutes of the Lord are right And to rejoice in the heart The Lord's own and its pure and death Light to the eyes and heart
[18:50] Let's pray briefly and ask for the Lord's help as we consider his word together.
[19:00] Lord how we thank you for your written word. We thank you that it is authoritative and powerful.
[19:11] That it is living and active, breathed out by your very self. Lord it is perfect. It is sure. It makes wise to simple.
[19:24] It is right and brings rejoicing to the heart. It is pure and brings light to our eyes. Lord as we come to consider your word We pray that we would see and hear and be given grace to follow the Lord Jesus.
[19:40] That we'd hear his gracious invitation to come to him. To find rest. To find satisfaction. Lord give us ears to hear.
[19:51] And grace and hearts and minds that are ready to respond. And to follow you and to love you all the days of our life. These things we pray in Jesus name.
[20:04] Amen. We'll sing the second half of that Psalm. Psalm 19 verses 9 to 14. Amen. And so did Jesus be of God.
[20:28] I'm young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young and young I wish I was young to be this child young and young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young young Lord, over the night I shall adorn
[21:36] Our greatest life to dream A great reward provided Is for them that keep the same Who can this ever understand O cleanse the me within From secret halls I serve And keep from all presumptuous men And do not suffer
[22:37] Then do have to come in your glory And right which they search The angels and thy strong mercy The words which of my blood proceed The thoughts sent from my heart Accept, O Lord, Father, my strength And my redeemed heart We turn then to Mark chapter 6
[23:45] And the passage that we have read together This morning we were encouraged to Look at the gospel accounts As not simply narration Not just a narrative Not only a story Or a sequence of events But within that narration There is proclamation There is a message That is to be discerned And hopefully we were convinced of that As we saw this morning How Mark weaves the testimony Of the apostles Together with the rejection Of the Lord Jesus And the final testimony Of John the Baptist And the echoes that were Within that From the parable of the sower And the response to The word of God Well that continues this evening As verse 30 The apostles gather themselves together Unto Jesus And tell them of the mission
[24:45] That they have been on And it is that then That prompts the Lord to say In verse 31 Come ye yourselves apart Into a desert place And rest a while And here we have I suppose Relatively familiar Events once again The feeding of the 5000 The Lord Jesus Walking on water These I don't want to presume But perhaps for many These are miracles Events within the gospels That we have been familiar with Perhaps from childhood And if that's true For us Then that's something To be incredibly Grateful for But as ever Mark is not simply Narrating A history He is proclaiming A message And I want to put it to you That Mark is giving us Certain pieces Of a jigsaw That he wants us To then put together There are four Pieces of the jigsaw
[25:46] That I'm going to just Highlight from our reading I'm going to put them On the table As it were At the beginning And then later on In the message We're going to try And put them together To see what the message Might be There are four of them The first thing to note Is that this takes place In a desert Or a wilderness location That Jesus Takes his disciples apart It is the crowd That come to him And the feeding of the 5000 Emphatically Takes place In the wilderness If you see that In verse 31 This is a desert place In case we missed that We have verse 32 And they departed Into a desert place Verse 35 Drives the point Home further Where we are told Again This is A desert Place Location Location Location Mark is Not wanting us
[26:47] To miss That these events Take place Within the wilderness Well what events That's piece number one Piece number two Is amazing signs With bread And amazing signs With water That's what's at the heart Of the feeding of the 5000 Isn't it As the crowd come And Jesus shows Wonderful compassion Toward the people Being a sheep Without a shepherd And the disciples Say Time to disperse Time to send them away Go and get something To eat But he says Give them something To eat yourselves Go find out What you've got The word comes back There's some bread How many loaves Have you got Five And two fish And so on Amazing signs With bread Jesus provides For his people In the wilderness And feeds them With bread
[27:47] Connected to that Same piece of the jigsaw Piece number two Is an amazing sign With water You see how the two signs Are linked together Verse 45 After the feeding Of the 5000 And the people Are filled Verse 45 And straightway It happens At the same time He constrained His disciples To get into the ship And to go To the other side And so on And the Lord Sees them Toiling in the rowing And he comes Unto them At the fourth watch Of the night Verse 48 Walking Upon The sea You see that In the wilderness Doing amazing things With bread Only what God Can do Providing for his people And the one Who also Has mastery Over the sea I think that's Piece number two Piece number three Of the jigsaw Is That there are
[28:48] Echoes Of the Lord's Relationship With Israel All the way Through There are Expressions Of the Exodus That runs All the way Through These things Notice that It is the Twelve That gather Notice the Description How the Lord Is the Shepherd And they Are his Sheep That's Psalm 100 Isn't it We are the Sheep He doth Us Take The Lord Is the Shepherd Of Israel The one Who brought His people Up Out Of Egypt That's Psalm 80 Give ear O shepherd Of Israel Also the way That the people Are described They're made To sit down On the green Grass In ranks Of hundreds And by Fifties These were Common Arrangements And divisions In the old Covenant Of the people Of Israel Look also At what is Said When the
[29:49] Lord steps Into the Boat They saw Him They were Troubled And he Immediately Talked With him And said Now In the Authorised Here it Says Be of Good Cheer It is I Perhaps You have A footnote In your Bible That could Be read Be of Good Cheer I Am Be Not Afraid You see The echoes Of the Exodus The shepherd Of Israel The Lord Gathering His people Round about Him I'm giving Too much Away I'm putting The jigsaw Together There's bread And there's Water And the Great I Am Is here Present Among his People Piece number Three Piece number Four If we're Just needing Prompting to Try and put Them all Together Look at Verse 52 Where Mark Prompts us To say That there's Something to Be understood Here
[30:49] There's Something more Than just The bare Narrative There is Something to Be understood In the Connection Between the Miracle of The loaves And the Walking And mastery Of the Sea Verse 52 For the Disciples Consider Not The miracle Of the Loaves Now that's As the Lord has Come into The boat If we Were to Write that We might Kind of Think the Lord The disciples Had not Considered the Miracle of The sea But Mark Says the Miracle of The loaves For their Heart was Hardened There is Something to Be understood Within this Narrative The wilderness The bread The water The echoes Of the Exodus And something To understand Well I've said Maybe a little Bit too much Within the Jigsaw Framework But we'll Come to That later In the Message And we'll Put them Together And see What Mark Is proclaiming
[31:49] To us However Three points Three points By way of Response To this Message As we're Called to Come to a Feast That satisfies The first One is The first One is That we Are to Run To Jesus Run To Jesus You see How there's Running at The beginning And there's Running at The end And so Mark doesn't Want us to Miss that We have to Pick that Out And we have To press That home And make That one Of our Key points That's one Of Mark's Key points So it has To be one Of ours As well Look at Verse 33 As the People As the Lord and The disciples Departed to That desert Place by Ship privately The people Saw them Departing And many Knew him And look At the Response And they Ran They ran A foot Thither Out of All the Cities Now that Comes in Contrast To what
[32:50] We've Just had Before Isn't It Comes in Contrast To remember Nazareth Where it Was Who is This Man Where did This man Get these Things Who does He think He is And they Were Scandalised By him They were Offended At him And Jesus Left them In their Unbelief What a Wonderful Response!
[33:13] Here The soil Is Much more Fertile Here That people Run to Jesus And Mark Doesn't want us To miss that Because we Have it In verse 33 We then Also Have it At the End Of the Passage As well In verse 55 That when They came Out of The ship Straightway They knew Him And they Ran They ran Through that Whole region Round about And began to Carry about In beds Those That were Sick And so On I Wonder I Wonder How Much Running You Do Maybe For Many Not Not An A Lot But if You're If you're Ever in The position Where you Need to Run If you have To get Somewhere On time If you're Trying to Catch a Bus Or you're Trying to Go Somewhere And you Need to Pick up The pace And you Need to Make sure That you Get there Well if You're Running It matters It matters Doesn't it It matters That you Get there And it
[34:13] Matters That you Respond Urgently Well here What could Be more Urgent Than running To The Lord Jesus That's the Response Of the people Here In contrast To what We've Had before In the Rejection At Nazareth And dusting Off the Sandals And the Final Testimony Of John Here People Recognize Their need For Jesus And they Are prepared To run To him That has To be The desire Of our Heart That has To be The prayer For ourselves For our Children For all Whom we Know Our prayer For them Is that They would Run To Jesus Because Where else Can we Go You Remember The words Of Jesus To the Disciples As many Would drift Away From him And he Says to Them In John's Gospel He says Will you Also Go away And what Is the Response That the Disciples Say Led Peter
[35:14] They say Lord To whom Else Shall we Go Where else Can we Go You Alone Emphatically Have the Words Of Eternal Life It's Very Simple Isn't It But it Seems to Be Mark's Emphasis And we Want to Make it Our Own Make it Our Prayer Our Desire Our Goal Our Mission Our Focus In Life That Every Day And Each Day We Would Run To The Lord Jesus He Is The One Who Has The Words!
[35:52] Of Life Secondly Not only Are we To run To Jesus We Are To Come To A Feast That Satisfies Isn't It Wonderful That Here You See The Humanity Of The Lord Jesus That The Ministry And The Work And The Road That Was Set Ahead Of Him And As He Considers The Cross That Is On The Horizon That He Needed To Rest And He Needed To Take Deliberate Break And Sabbath Rest To Prepare For What Comes Ahead Come Yourselves Apart And Rest A While But Even Within That Context Look At The Compassion The Grace The Kindness The Gentleness Of Jesus
[36:52] That People See Him And Are Running To Him And Verse 34 What Kind of Welcome Do They Receive You know If it Was If it Was Ourselves And We Were Looking To Get Away And We Were Trying To Get Away For A Little Bit Of A Break We Would Be Tempted To Say Well Could You Maybe Just Hold On Right Now I Tell You Can I Get Back To You Jesus Does Not Say You Need To Make An Appointment Jesus Does Not Say That Office Hours Aren't Exactly Open Right Now We're Trying To Get A Little Bit Of Rest Here What Does He Say Look Verse 34 When He Came Out And Saw Much People Look At The Heart Of The Savior Look At His Posture Towards Us He Was Moved With Compassion Toward Them
[37:52] Because They Were As Sheep As Not Having A Shepherd And So What Does He Do In Response Again The Sore He Began To Teach Them Many Things We Are To Come And The Welcome And Compassion That We Can Receive From Jesus Is Guaranteed Is That Not Food For Our Souls Is That Not A Soft Pillow For Our Heads That As We Come To Him Weary Sick And Sore And Sad That We Find In Him A Savior Who Is Gentle Who Is Filled With Compassion And Who Is Ready To Welcome All Who Come To Him In Faith The Disciples Kind of Think Well Enough's Enough Now We Need To Send These Folks Away They You know it's getting late, shops are closing, we need to go and get something to eat.
[38:49] But Jesus is going to provide. He's going to feed and nourish. And as we've seen already there's perhaps echoes of the exodus within this.
[39:02] As the people sit down in this desert place and the Lord does miraculous things with bread. But the punchline of this is, is that they all did eat.
[39:16] In verse 42. They all did eat and were filled. They were satisfied.
[39:29] I think there's another contrast with the passage that we looked at this morning. There's a contrast between two feasts. There's a contrast between the feast of the world and the kingdom of Herod.
[39:44] And there's a contrast with the feast of the Lord Jesus and the kingdom of heaven. What did Herod have to offer? Well he had sensuality. He had all the power and authority visibly of the present day.
[40:00] Remember how all the chiefs and nobles and so on were there. There was sensuality. There would have been drink and everything that you could have thought and wished for. And how did it end?
[40:11] Did it bring satisfaction? It most certainly did not. It ended in tragedy. And in death. Contrast that.
[40:22] With the Lord Jesus. Contrast that in that he is the one who provides. And as we come to him and find compassion and rest from him.
[40:34] He gives satisfaction. There's a music group. Some might be able to know who it was. And one of their popular refrains. I think they came out even 60 years ago this year.
[40:48] And one of the refrains of their songs was. I can't get no satisfaction. Though I try. And I try. And I try.
[40:59] I can't get no satisfaction. And I suppose those individuals have for decades. Lived at the pinnacle of success. For a worldly standard.
[41:11] They have lived and experienced success. And excess. Without measure. By a worldly standard. But there is something. Tragic really within that song.
[41:24] Which is a testimony. Of the feast of the world. That it offers much. It may glitter. It may seem to provide an allurement. But it does not satisfy.
[41:39] Friends. We need to run to Jesus. And we need to come to him. And find satisfaction. Within him. You'll know that yourself.
[41:49] If you've come. You'll know that sense of fulfillment. That he gives. The peace. And the satisfaction. The rest.
[42:00] That he offers. Not. Like the world. But rest. And satisfaction. So we're to run to Jesus. And we are to come then.
[42:11] To a feast. That satisfies. Thirdly. And our final point. Is that we are to find. True freedom.
[42:22] In Jesus. Find true freedom. In Jesus. Jesus. Let's. Let's return to those.
[42:33] Four pieces of the. Jigsaw. That we brought out. On the table. At the beginning. And see if we can. Put them together. And see if we can. Draw the meaning. From it. You remember that this was.
[42:45] Taking place in the wilderness. This was the desert location. What was happening in the desert. There was the Lord. Mastering the sea. And providing bread.
[42:56] For his people. The strong echoes. Of the exodus. The sheep. And the shepherd. The twelve. That I am. In the midst. Of his people.
[43:07] And something to understand. About. The loaves. What I would submit. If we put those. Pieces of the jigsaw together. Is that Mark.
[43:17] Here. Is showing us. That Jesus has come. To. Bring about. The new. And promised. Exodus. Just as the Lord.
[43:28] Delivered his people. Out of Egypt. In the exodus. Then. So now. As Jesus has come. And as he will go. To the cross.
[43:38] And through his ministry. He has come. To bring true. And ultimate. Deliverance. Remember. What was at the center. Of the exodus.
[43:49] Narrative. It was. The Passover. Wasn't it? And as the. Blood of the lamb. Was shed. And as the lamb. Was. The blood of the lamb. Was put on the doorposts.
[43:59] And upon the lintels. The people. Were literally. Passed over. And judgment. Passed over them. Well here. The Lord Jesus. Is. The true.
[44:10] And promised lamb. The lamb of God. In the words of. John the Baptist. From John 1. The lamb of God. Who takes away. The sin. Of the world. Here.
[44:21] As Jesus. Does what. The Lord did. In the Old Testament. In the wilderness. The Lord. Provided for his people. And he delivered them. Through the Red Sea.
[44:32] In the mastery. Of the waters. So. To here. Jesus. Is bringing about. The true. And promised. Exodus. That was foreshadowed.
[44:43] In the Old Testament. And that would. Climax. In the death. Of the lamb. The cross. In the gospel of Mark. Is always on the horizon. And it is. As the. As the blood.
[44:54] Of the lamb. Is shed. It is there. That his people. Can go free. Three things. Briefly. About the. Pattern. Of the exodus.
[45:05] The pattern. Of the exodus. Breaks down. Into three ways. God delivers. His people. God demands. From his people. And then God. Dwells. With his people.
[45:16] That's the same. Pattern. For ourselves. Today. God delivers. He demands. And he dwells. How wonderful. To know. That our salvation. Is brought about.
[45:27] By the sovereign. Work of God. That he. Delivers. That he. Sets. The prisoner. Free. That he. Looses. Our chains.
[45:38] And that he. Opens. The eyes. Of the blind. All of those. Descriptions. That we read. Of. In Psalm. 146. How the Lord. Lifts up. Those who are oppressed.
[45:49] The Lord. Opens. The eyes. Of the blind. The Lord. Sets. The prisoners. Free. What I would say. Is that. Those descriptions. Are not descriptions. Of different people. But they are.
[46:00] Different descriptions. Descriptions. Of what the Lord. Does for us. In the gospel. Just as. The Lord. Delivered his people. From Egypt. And from bondage.
[46:10] And from the dominion. Of Pharaoh. So the Lord. Has delivered us. Now not from Egypt. Not from slavery. But he has. Delivered us. From the dominion.
[46:21] Of sin. And he has. Freed us. And set us. Free from our chains. And set us. At liberty. But as he delivers us. He then.
[46:32] Demands. Of us. That's the pattern. Of the exodus. The Lord. Brings his people out. And by grace. He gives them. His. Law. That they might.
[46:42] Belong to him. And so for the Christian. The Christian. Is not. Under law. By a way. Of salvation. The law. Was never given. As a way. Of salvation.
[46:52] But the Christian. Is under the law. As a gracious. Way of life. And so. We respond. In thankfulness. To what the Lord. Has done.
[47:03] In delivering us. In obedience. You think of the words. Of the Apostle Paul. In Romans 12. That therefore. In light of the mercies. Of God. In light of all.
[47:13] That God has done. For us. Present our bodies. As a living. Sacrifice. Holy. Acceptable. To him. And as that. Takes place.
[47:24] As the Lord. Delivers. And as he. Demands of us. Then he has promised. That he will. Dwell with us. And each one of us. Are then indwelt. By the Holy Spirit.
[47:35] Each one of us. Experience. The Lord's presence. Particularly. When he. When we gather together. With his people. For where two or three. Are gathered there. Am I. In the midst.
[47:46] Of them. And more than that. There is that. Final. New creation. As well. That we. Look forward to. And anticipate. Where the dwelling. Of God.
[47:57] Will once again. Be. With man. The same pattern. That we see. In the exodus. Is the same pattern. Of our. Salvation.
[48:08] Today. Delivering. God's demand. Upon us. In order that. He may. Dwell. With us. I think. That's just a little. Way of showing.
[48:19] From the narrative. Of what. There is to see. In the pattern. Of the exodus. And of our. Salvation. In the present day. But the. The real thrust. Of that must be.
[48:30] And just as we draw. Things to a close. Your thrust. Of that must be. That we must find. True freedom. In Jesus. Jesus has come. To set us.
[48:41] Free. He has come. To set us. At liberty. And this one. Who could control. The sea. And this one. Who could provide. Bread. In the wilderness.
[48:52] Is the same. The great. I am. And it is. As we come. To him. And as we shelter. Under his blood. That we find. Pardon. We find.
[49:03] Forgiveness. And we find. Freedom. And. Liberty. We began. By saying. That. The gospel accounts.
[49:14] Are more. Than just. A bare narrative. It's not simply. Narration. But it is. Proclamation. Hopefully we saw that. This morning. And hopefully we see that.
[49:25] This evening. As well. We've been encouraged. Exhorted. To respond. In three different ways. We are firstly. To run to Jesus. Where else can we go? Will we do that.
[49:36] Today. Will we do that. This day. And every day. Of our lives. He alone. Has the word of life. Will we come. To a feast.
[49:47] That satisfies. In contrast. With Herod. And the feast of the world. Jesus. Provides. And they all ate. And they were.
[49:59] Filled. The wonderful. Compassion. Of Jesus. The welcome. That he. Extends. To us. He sees us. As sheep. Not having a shepherd. We can run to him. And we can find.
[50:12] Satisfaction. And as we put the pieces. Of the jigsaw together. And as we've discerned. The echoes. Of the exodus. And as we've been reminded. Of how the Lord. Delivered. His people. In the past.
[50:22] How wonderfully true. That he delivers. Still. Today. And that he is. Powerful. To save. To the uttermost. All who call. Upon him. By faith.
[50:33] And we can find. True. Freedom. In Jesus. Well let's stand. And we'll pray. And ask the Lord. To bless his word.
[50:44] To our hearts. Lord Jesus.
[50:54] We praise you. As. The great I am. The one who was. And is. And is to come. Lord. We thank you.
[51:05] For your. Amazing power. For your. Compassion. For your. Provision. Lord. Help us. To run. To you. Help us.
[51:15] To find. Satisfaction. In you. Alone. And Lord. We praise you. As the one. Who. Sets the prisoners. Free. Lord. We pray. That we would know. And live in the.
[51:27] Power of your. Forgiveness. The power of your. Freedom. And as you have. Delivered us. That you would. That we would demand. That we would respond. To your demands.
[51:38] And that you would dwell with us. And that we would know. Your blessing upon us. And these things we pray. In Jesus name. Amen. Amen. We're going to sing to close.
[51:54] And we'll sing. Psalm 23. The Lord is my shepherd. I'll not want. He makes me down to lie. In pastures green. He leadeth me. The quiet. Waters by.
[52:05] We'll sing to God's praise. The Lord. The Lord. The Lord. The Lord. The Lord.
[52:16] The Lord. He makes me down to life.
[52:29] In my church dream he leadeth me.
[52:40] He does white waters by me. My soul will not restore again.
[53:02] I need you walk beyond me. Within the hearts of my righteousness.
[53:21] In for a misworn in sping.
[53:34] In my walk his death's dark hill.
[53:44] Yet will I be out on hill. For thou art with me.
[54:01] And thy Lord. And thou art with me. Come on still.
[54:17] My dear God. Thou art with me.
[54:27] In presence of my woes. My hand and heart.
[54:42] Thou art with my life. And my God.
[54:53] Thou art with me. For thou art with me.
[55:04] Goodness and mercy. All thy life. Shall surely follow me.
[55:21] And in your sight. For evermore.
[55:32] My dwelling. In his glory. God. In thee. Amen.
[55:46] Let's stand and hear the benediction of the Lord upon us. Amen. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the communion of the Holy Ghost be with you all now and evermore.
[56:03] Amen.
