Psalm 119:67 & 71 "Suffering is a Blessing in Disguise"

[0:00] Hi, my name is George Sinclair. I'm the lead pastor of Church of the Messiah.

[0:15] ! It is wonderful that you would like to check out some of the sermons done by Church of the Messiah, either by myself or some of the others. Listen, just a couple of things. [1:12] It's our great privilege this morning to have as our guest speaker, Pastor Lim. I apologize, I'm not going to try to pronounce your first name. Pastor Lim is a Korean-Canadian pastor. He was providing millions of dollars of aid to the North Koreans when he disappeared in February 2015.

[1:37] The North Korean government had arrested him, claiming he was speaking out against their regime. On December 2015, Pastor Lim was sentenced to life in prison, doing hard labor for long hours a day. By the grace of God, Lim was released, Pastor Lim was released from detention on August 19th, 2017, after the intervention of the Trudeau government. And it is our great privilege that we can have you here to open the word for us and to share with us how persecution can sometimes be a road and an avenue to blessing.

[2:18] So Pastor Lim, I welcome you. Thank you. I have seen the reason for the Canada's land in the world. Over the past years, I have witnessed what I believe to be the wrath of God upon the land of Canada.

[2:34] The reason for this wrath can be summed up in one word, sin. Why have we seen the world of Canada's land before we have seen the world of the world?

[2:52] Why have we seen unprecedented and devastating wildfires across this land, the economic crisis, pandemics, and deep social divisions?

[3:06] That's because God's people have not turned away from their wicked ways. First and foremost, the people of God must repent, turn away from their sins, and seek the face of God.

[3:25] When we do this, our prayers will surely rise up to God, and we'll surely receive His answer.

[3:37] The only answer is prayer. When the earnest prayer is restored, we will overcome temptation, endure persecution, and even times of tribulation will be brought to an end.

[4:00] Why are there so many wildfires in Australia? Why are there so many wildfires in California?

[4:13] Why are there so many wildfires in California? Amazon, also in Amazon. Canada's landmass, the wildfires in Canada consumed the landmass equivalent to Korea.

[4:27] This is not unrelated to our sins. This is the symbol of fire's judgment. God's judgment can be divided into three.

[4:41] First, physical. First, physical. Hail, tsunami, famine, famine, drought, and flooding.

[4:55] When God closes the heaven and stops the rain. Second is economics. There is recession and depression. There is recession and depression.

[5:08] Farms get destroyed, animals get sick. Many people experience economic hardship. Many people experience economic hardship.

[5:21] Third, global pandemic. We've experienced a pandemic, but there are many other viruses around.

[5:37] All these difficulties are not by chance. God hasểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểểể I want all of Canadians to turn to God.

[6:20] I want Canada to be blessed and be the vessel of blessings. I want Canada to be the face of God that shines up in the world.

[6:37] From the beginning of the year, we have a lot of Christians in Korea. We have no Christians in Korea.

[6:53] We have no Christians in Korea. But because of the devoted missionaries that came to Korea, we have a lot of Christians in Korea.

[7:06] We have a lot of Christians in Korea. And that's why there are 60,000 churches in Korea today.

[7:59] Not 6,000. 그래서 대한민국은 세계에서 제일 못사는 나라가 있는데 지금은 제일 잘사는 나라가 되었습니다.

[8:15] 그래서 우리는 하나님의 은혜를 느끼고 있습니다. 100여 년 전에 캐나다는 신앙이 좋았던 것 같습니다. 굉장히 신앙이 뜨거웠습니다.

[8:31] 그리고 복음을 전하는 나라였습니다. 그래서 캐나다가 축복을 많이 받았는데 그 축복을 축복으로 느끼지 못하고 너무 미원적인 신앙인이 되어버린 것 같습니다.

[8:47] 미원적인? 루꼬. Because of that faith, 캐나다 was blessed with a lot of material blessings as well.

[8:58] However, these days, 캐나다 has become a big lukewarm. 저는 북한 얘기를 잠깐 하겠습니다. I want to talk a little bit about North Korea. 저는 지난 26년 동안 북한 땅을 150번을 다녀왔습니다.

[9:13] In the past 26 years, I visited North Korea 150 times. 처음 갔을 때 굶어 죽어가는 사람들을 내 눈으로 너무 많이 봤기 때문입니다. I saw so many people starving to death with my own eyes.

[9:28] 내 동족들인데 그걸 보고만 있을 수가 없어서 가게 된 것입니다. They're my people, the same Korean people. And that's why my heart went to repeatedly go back to North Korea. 우리 교회는 약 10만 명의 사람 정도라도 살려보자고 하는 프로젝트를 진행했습니다.

[9:43] So my church in Toronto had this project to save 100,000 lives of North Koreans. 제일 먼저 고아들 1만 350명을 우리 교회가 입양을 했습니다.

[9:54] First of all, we adopted 10,350 orphans. 그 아이들에게 먹을 것을 갖다 주었고 we provide them with food, clothing, medicine, sugar, sugar, everything we could.

[10:13] A기들 기저귀까지 갖다 줬습니다. 그리고 농촌이 너무 어려워서 North Korea는 다 산입니다. 나라가 다 산입니다. 그래서 호수가 많은데 호수에 물을 빼고 논을 만들어줬습니다.

[10:27] 그리고 노인들이 사는 양노원을 7개를 지어줬습니다. 학교를 4개를 지어줬습니다.

[10:41] 26개의 학교, 지붕 새는 학교에 지붕을 닫고 지어줬습니다. 병원도 많이 걸리고 그랬습니다. 평양에다가는 영어 학원을 만들어서 전국의 영어 선생이 2,000명을 훈련시켰습니다.

[10:57] 평양에 있는 학원을 만들어서 영어 학원을 만들어서 2,000 영어 학원을 만들어서 2,000 영어 학원을 만들어서 바다 살리는 프로젝트도 진행했습니다. 동해바다가 다 죽어서 바다 살리는 프로젝트도 진행했습니다.

[11:11] 큰 배 두 대를 사주고 작은 배 50대를 원동기를 갈아주고 그리고 개 잡는 개들에라는 것이 있는데 3,600개를 만들어줬습니다.

[11:32] 그 외에도 북한 주민들을 돕기 위한 인도적 지원은 여기서 다 말할 수도 없을 정도로 많이 했습니다.

[11:48] 그러던 중에 제가 2013년에 미국의 어느 모임에서 설교를 하게 되었습니다.

[11:58] Then 2013 happened when I was giving a sermon just like here in an American church. 설교하면서 저는 북한이 이렇게 비참하게 된 이유가 바로 김일송 동상 때문이라고 말하면서 동상이 무너져야 한다고 설교했습니다.

[12:13] 김일송 김일송 김일송 동상이 얼마나 되는지 아십니까?

[12:30] 조그만 땅덩어리에 김일송 동상이 4만 3천 개가 세워져 있습니다. 43,000 스태퓨 남한에는 교회가 6만 개가 서 있는데 북한에는 김일송 동상이 4만 3천 개가 세워져 있습니다.

[12:49] 60,000 churches in South Korea 43,000 스태퓨 김일송 in North Korea 그러면서 북한의 폭력하는 독재가 없어져야 된다고 설교했습니다.

[13:00] And I also proclaim at that sermon that the dictatorship of Kim Jong-un has to stop 그런데 그걸 누가 방송에 올리는 바람에 북한의 해커들이 보고 그걸 김정은 한테 보고 하는 바람에 저를 유인하는 걸 모르고 들어갔다가 저는 체포가 됩니다.

[13:17] So unfortunately that sermon was uploaded to the internet the hackers North Korean hackers got hold of it they alerted their authorities and he was surely lured into North Korea and got arrested.

[13:34] 그래서 저는 가자마자 재판을 받게 되고 감옥 생활을 독방에서만 949일을 있다가 나왔습니다. 매일 8시간씩 강제 노동에 시달렸습니다.

[13:54] 매일 8시간씩 강제 노동에 시달렸습니다. 겨울에는 얼어붙은 여기 지금 오타와 만큼 추운 곳인데 얼어붙은 땅을 까는 일을 시켰습니다.

[14:07] 얼어붙은 석탄을 깨기도 했습니다. 그래서 손가락이 다 망가지기 시작했고 발가락은 다 동상에 걸렸습니다.

[14:24] 끊임없는 폭력과 언어폭력과 극심한 스트레스를 받다 보니까 기도를 하는데도 제가 워낙 스트레스를 받아서 3개월 동안 복통을 일으키고 끊이지 않는 설사가 나오는 것을 경험하기도 했습니다.

[14:39] Because of the constant verbal abuse and stress I experienced 3 months of stomach ache and diarrhea. 그리고 장이 상했다고 해가지고 수술을 받았는데 아침에 들어가서 저녁에 나올 정도 하루종일 어떤 수술을 했습니다.

[14:57] And then apparently my intestines weren't working and so I had a whole day surgery when I went in and came out in the evening. 감옥에는 석탄을 떼고 있었는데 어느 날 추운 겨울날 석탄 가스를 막고 죽을 뻔 하기도 했습니다.

[15:12] The prison is heated by coal and I almost had a gas poisoning. 다 말로 다할 수 없는 고난을 겪었지만 저는 그것을 하나님의 축복이라고 생각합니다.

[15:25] Although I endured unspeakable sufferings of all kinds in the end I came to see that my suffering became a disguised blessing. 고난당한 것이 내게 유익이라 이로써 내가 주의 윤례를 배우게 되었다고 말합니다.

[15:38] Before I was afflicted I went astray but now I obey your word. 고난당하기 전에는 내가 그릇 행하였는데 이제는 주의 말씀을 지킵니다 라고 말합니다. 그의 노여움은 잠깐이오 그의 은총은 평생이로다.

[15:56] 저녁에는 울음이 기숙할지라도 아침에는 기쁨이 오리라고 말씀합니다. 그런 의미에서 감옥생활은 제 영혼의 모든 때를 다 씻겨내고 하나님께서 정결하게 만들어주시는 수도원과 같은 곳이었습니다.

[16:18] 거기에 있는 엔터테인먼트는 제로였습니다.

[16:29] 텔레비전도 없었습니다. 라디오도 없었습니다. 전화기도 없었습니다. 책도 한 건 없었습니다. 감사한 것은 외국인에게는 성경 보는 것이 허락된다고 해서 성경책 하나가 있었습니다.

[16:50] 저는 거의 3년 동안 시간 나는 대로 성경만 읽었습니다. 제가 목회를 30년 했는데 목회할 때보다 성경을 더 많이 읽어봤습니다.

[17:07] 노동하면서 기도를 배우게 되었고 수많은 성경 말씀들을 암성하게 되었습니다. 그것은 저한테 영적으로 굉장히 기쁨이 넘치는 시간이었습니다.

[17:24] 노동을 하면서 저는 제가 40년 동안 사역했던 그 내용들을 정리하기 시작했습니다. 그래서 강의 안을 700개를 머리로 암성할 수가 있었습니다.

[17:47] 여기서는 그렇게 할 수가 없습니다. 감옥에 가야지만 할 수 없습니다. 텔레비전도 없고 스마트폰도 없었기 때문입니다.

[18:02] 음식은 극도로 열악했습니다. 밥이 나오는데 시커먼 쌀에 돌멩이가 많아서 밥을 먹을 수가 없었습니다. 소금에 절인 양배추가 전부였습니다.

[18:23] 그렇게 물에 말아서 돌을 가라앉히면서 삼천 끼를 먹었습니다. 두 달 동안 먹었더니 제 몸무게가 23kg가 빠졌습니다.

[18:43] 여기 다이어트 할 사람들은 걱정할 필요가 없어요. 한 달만 갔다 오셨습니다. 저는 주일을 거기서 134번을 혼자 예배를 드렸습니다.

[19:00] 그래서 저는 134번을 저녁에 예배를 예배를 저녁에 저녁에 있는 우리 교회에는 교인들이 한 4천명 됩니다.

[19:10] 제 교회에 4천명 4천명 그렇게 합심해서 예배를 즐겁게 예배를 드리다가 단임 목사가 끌려가서 혼자 예배를 드리니까 얼마나 외로워한지 모라.

[19:23] 여러분 성도들이 함께 모여 예배하고 기도하는 것이 특권인 줄로 믿으시기 바랍니다.

[19:44] 그리고 이 자유를 빼앗기고 살아간다는 것이 뼛속 깊이 고통으로 느껴졌습니다. 저는 마음대로 몸을 움직일 수가 없었습니다.

[19:58] 조금만 감옥 안에서 화장실 갈 때도 손을 들고 있으면 간수가 와서 허락을 해야지 화장실 갈 수 있습니다. 저는 요즘에는 한국에서 주로 많이 있는데 여기 올 때 약 3번 갈아타고 20시간 정도 비행기를 타고 왔어요.

[20:23] 그런데 별로 지루하지가 않은 것은 제가 가고 싶을 때 마음대로 화장실을 갈 수 있는 자유가 있다는 것이 저를 행복하게 만듭니다.

[20:46] 여러분이 자유를 빼앗겨 보면 자유가 얼마나 소중하다는 것을 느낄 수가 있습니다. 여러분 우리가 너무 자유에 익숙하다 보니까 자유의 고마움을 모르고 있는 지금 중국 같은 나라 북한 같은 나라들은 자유가 없습니다.

[21:11] 교회도 마음대로 다닐 수가 없고 예배도 할 수가 없습니다. 저도 그렇게 노예 처럼 살았습니다. 한 독재자 때문에 선한 일을 했는데도 악으로 그들은 갚았습니다.

[21:28] 한 한 가지 말씀드리고 싶은 것은 감옥 안에서도 저는 북한의 소망을 보았습니다.

[21:41] 제가 북한에 있는 동안 북한의 최고위 관부들이 모여서 저를 재판하기 위해서 준비를 하고 있었습니다.

[21:53] 그들은 저에 대한 조사를 하기 위해서 북한의 제 세계에 흩어져 있는 해커들한테 지령을 내려서 저에 대한 정보를 보내라고 했습니다.

[22:16] 북한의 해커들이 저에 대한 정보를 보냈는데 인터넷을 샅샅이 뒤져가지고 보낸 대부분 인터넷에 나온 것이 제가 설교하는 것이었습니다. 그 고위 관리들과 판사 검사 재판장 경찰 이런 사람들이 모여서 하루 종일 제 설교를 들었습니다.

[22:43] 그들은 한 번도 설교를 들어본 적이 없어요. 한 번도 교회를 가본 적이 없어요. 한 번도 예배를 들여본 적이 없어요. 그런데 당의 지령 때문에 그들은 자유롭게 읽은 거죠.

[22:56] 그걸 들으면서 제가 또 무슨 잘못을 했는지 찾아내려고 들었습니다. 한 번은 부장판사가 찾아오더니 제 설교를 같이 듣자고 하더라고요.

[23:14] 그런데 그때 설교가 3시간 15분 짜리였어요. 3시간 15분 짧은 서멘 그러면서 하나님의 설교가 원래 이렇게 긴 거냐고 물었습니다.

[23:31] 참 이상한 것은 그렇게 나를 죽이겠다고 소리 지르던 사람들이 변하기 시작했습니다.

[23:42] 높은 판사부터 시작해서 말단 직원의 이르기까지 사람들이 다 부드러워졌습니다.

[23:55] 자기들이 변했다는 증거를 보여주기 위해서 저한테 어느 날 과자를 사다가 주기도 하고 어떤 사람은 자기 부인이 먹으라고 줬다고 동태 시케라고 해서 동태 시케를 갖다 주기도 하고 어느 날 나를 불러내더니 저 끝에 있는 자기들만 쓰는 조그만 목욕탕에 가서 같이 목욕을 일대일로 목욕을 하고 때를 밀어주기도 했습니다.

[24:40] 저를 대하는 태도가 완전히 달라졌습니다. 고함 지는 소리는 멈추었고 협박도 사라졌습니다. 어떤 간수들은 자기 자녀들 어린 사춘기 아이들에 대해서 상담을 해오기 시작했습니다.

[24:59] 어린 애들을 어떻게 키우는가 물어보기도 했습니다. 제가 카나다 산다고 하니까 카나다에는 집이 있느냐 자동차 운전을 할 줄 아느냐 별거를 다 물어봤습니다.

[25:20] 거기는 자동차 있는 사람이 한 사람도 없습니다.

[25:33] 사유재산이 허락되지 않습니다. 모든 것이 다 궁금한 것입니다. 시간이 지나면서 이 사람들은 영적으로 무장해자가 되고 변화되기 시작했습니다.

[25:50] 그때 저는 확실한 것을 하나 깨달았습니다. 믿음은 들으면서라고 들으면 그리스도의 말씀으로 말미암다는 사실입니다. 그들은 하나님의 말씀을 평생 듣지 못했어요.

[26:10] 그런데 저 때문에 거의 한 달 동안 매일 설교를 들었습니다. 그러면서 그들에게도 믿음이 생긴 것입니다. 하나님에 대한 믿음이 조금씩 생기기 시작합니다.

[26:26] 그리고 변하는 것을 봤습니다. 저는 앞으로 조만간 북한이 열릴 것이라고 생각합니다. 북한이 열리면 지구상의 공산당은 다 사라질 것입니다.

[26:44] 그리고 놀라운 부응이 북한 땅에서 일어날 것입니다. 그리고 이 사람들은 고생을 워낙 많이 해서 어떤 오지라도 가서 선교할 수 있도록 훈련되어 있습니다.

[26:56] 지금은 에세결 골짜기에 바싹 마른 해골대 처럼 소망이 없는 사람들이지만 보금이 전파되면 그 해골대가 다 살아나서 여호와의 군대가 되었듯이 북한은 조만간 하나님의 군대로 쓰임받게 될 것입니다.

[27:25] 여러분 북한을 위해서 기도해 주시기 바랍니다.

[27:35] North Korea 성경도 말하기를 너희는 같이 I am not going to be able to think about you.

[27:47] The Bible says continue to remember those in prison as if you were together with them in prison and those who are mistreated as you yourselves were suffering. I am not going to be able to talk about the underground church in North Korea.

[28:08] But one day I was in prison before I was in prison and the people of the underground church in North Korea found me.

[28:22] About eight of them came. There was a program called reunification of families.

[28:33] So people who were separated during the war were kind of reuniting and that's how they got to come to see me. 잠깐이지만 같이 그들과 교제를 할 수 있었고 또 기도를 하는데 이 사람들은 목사를 처음 보는 사람들이에요.

[28:47] But they had never seen a pastor. 손잡고 기도하는데 제 손등에 그 북한 교인이 흘리는 눈물이 뚝뚝뚝뚝뚝 떨어졌습니다.

[28:57] So I was praying with them holding hands and I could feel the tears dropping on my hands as we were praying together. 그들은 숨어서 예배를 드리고 있습니다. 손으로 쓴 성경책을 읽고 있었습니다.

[29:12] 찬성과도 다 손으로 적었습니다. 수많은 사람들이 지금도 감옥에 가 있습니다. 그들은 출세할 수 있는 모든 길이 막혔습니다.

[29:24] 그리고 사람 살지 못하는 곳으로 다 쫓겨가서 살고 있습니다. 공부를 잘해도 대학에 갈 수가 없습니다.

[29:39] 엄청난 핍박을 받고 있습니다. 그럼에도 신앙을 지키고 있는 사람들이 수천명이 있습니다. 여러분 놀랍지 않습니까?

[29:51] 그 무서운 아합과 이세벨의 세대에도 바알에게 무릎 꿇지 않은 7천명이 있었다고 성경은 말합니다. 지금 북한도 똑같습니다.

[30:15] 오래전부터 여러분도 기도했겠지만 주계장막이 열리게 해주십시오. 철의 장막이 열리게 해주십시오. 우리가 얼마나 소련도 모르고 중국도 몰라서 기도했는데 하나님이 1990년도부터 소련을 열어버리시고 중국을 다 열어버렸습니다.

[30:33] 기억나는 어떻게 생각했는지 우리는 우리는 한국의 칼을 지키고 있는 것입니다. 우리는 1990년도에 들어갔습니다. 1990년도에 들어갔습니다. 소위에 대한 한국의 칼국을 지키고 있습니다. 중국과 중국과 중국을 지키고 있습니다.

[30:43] 중국과 중국을 지키고 있습니다. 죄송합니다. 그래서 중국 땅에 한국 선교사가 8천명이 들어갔습니다. 그래서 중국 땅에 한국 선교사가 8천명이 들어갔습니다. 그래서 중국 땅에 예수 믿는 사람이 1억이 생겼습니다.

[30:58] 1억이면 100만 명? 100만 명의 중국 선교사가 8천명이 들어갔습니다. 러시아 땅에 한국 선교사가 2천명이 들어갔습니다.

[31:12] 그리고 수백 개의 교회가 생겼습니다. 하나님이 열면 닫을 자가 없습니다. 이제 마지막 남아있는 게 저는 북한이라고 생각합니다.

[31:30] 이란도 다 열렸습니다. 이란에 크리스찬이 100만 명이 넘었습니다. 지금 온 세계에서 하나님이 역사하고 계십니다.

[31:44] 북한 땅이 열리면 지구상에서 이제 그런 공산국가는 없어지게 될 것입니다. 그때 여러분 다 한번 한국에 오시기 바랍니다.

[32:01] 단기 선교라도 와서 북한을 한번 선교하시기 바랍니다. 여러분 전도할 수 있는 좋은 무기를 다 갖고 계세요. 제일 좋은 무기가 영어 할 줄 안다는 겁니다.

[32:17] 영어 ABCD만 가르쳐줘도 아이들이 수없이 모일 겁니다. 컴퓨터 조금만 가르쳐줘도 다 모일 겁니다. 우리는 많은 복음을 전할 수 있는 도구를 가지고 있습니다.

[32:34] 여러분 남은 생에 한번 그렇게 열린 곳에 가서 복음을 전하면 놀라운 역사가 일어납니다. 시간이 많으면 더 많은 얘기를 하고 싶지만 시간이 제한되어 있어서 북한의 실상을 영상으로 잠깐 보여드리겠습니다.

[32:57] 더 많은 소식을 가지고 있습니다. 그런데 시간이限界을 가지고 있습니다. 한국의 사진을 보러가겠습니다. 지금 한국의 사진을 보러가겠습니다. 영상 할 수 있는 리모트 컨트롤이 있나요?

[33:51] It's okay. And the cause of sentence was to destroy the statues of Kim Il-sung.

[34:39] And then forced labor for life was the sentence that he just declared. That's when he's landing in Korea after three years in jail.
