[0:00] Luke chapter 19, I want to talk tonight about the compassion of the Lord Jesus. He was moved with compassion. He was moved with compassion. It means his great love, his great and deep abiding love.

[0:14] In Luke 19 verse 41, it tells of the Lord Jesus, the Lord Jesus, he had compassion on the city. Luke 19 verse 41, and when he was come near, he beheld the city and wept over it.

[0:29] The Lord Jesus was moved with compassion in the word of God. Many times it talks of his deepest emotion, of his big heart, filled with intense yearning, bursting with pity. It showed in his face.

[0:41] His eyes gushed with tears. He was moved with compassion. When he saw the city, he wept over it. He feels the pain, the hurt, the suffering. And the Lord Jesus is often said to have been moved with compassion.

[0:55] When crowds of people were gathered, sometimes it was because they were hungry and faint. He felt for their practical needs. The Lord Jesus cares about people's needs and hurts.

[1:06] And sometimes it was when he had that compassion and that sympathy that he multiplied the loaves and fishes to feed the people. And here in this verse it says, the Lord Jesus comes to the city and he has compassion.

[1:21] Now, people tonight, I believe the Lord Jesus too comes to the city of Adelaide. The Lord Jesus comes to the city of Playford, the city where we live, to the streets of Elizabeth.

[1:32] And he's moved with compassion. He sees the people. He sees the unemployed. He sees the people, those in poverty. He sees the single parents, the broken homes, domestic violence, the victims of crime, of child abuse, the drug addicts, the alcoholics.

[1:49] The Lord Jesus sees the people and he's moved with compassion. And he's moved with compassion also for the sick. In Matthew 14, there's a number of verses we just touch on where the Lord Jesus is moved with compassion.

[2:03] Firstly, the sick people. In Matthew 14 and verse 14, And Jesus went forth and saw a great multitude. He saw a huge crowd of people.

[2:14] And it says he was moved with compassion towards them and he healed their sick. Our Lord Jesus was moved with compassion when he saw sick people. When he saw people afflicted and hurting and suffering.

[2:26] When you're feeling low. When you're in a bad way. The Lord Jesus, by his sweet presence, is there. And he cares. And he has compassion. And he gives his comfort in touch.

[2:37] He makes the wounded whole. He heals the sin-sick soul. That's the greatest sickness of mankind, is the sickness of sin. Because it afflicts everybody. Every man, woman and child has sin.

[2:49] They're born in sin. And the Lord Jesus is the great healer of that dread disease that afflicts the human race. The sickness of sin. He's the only one who can take it away. He's the only one who can touch the sick of sin.

[3:02] And we see in Matthew 20, some more sick people. In Matthew 20 verse 34, it talks about two blind men. The Lord Jesus, it says, he had compassion on them.

[3:13] And he touched their eyes. And immediately their eyes received sight. And they followed him. In Mark 1 verse 40, it tells us of another sick man. A leper rejected.

[3:25] An outcast. In Mark 1 verse 40. This poor man.

[3:51] Can you picture it? I've seen some pictures of lepers of people who their fingers drop off. They get a disease. They get a sore. And they're numb because of the leprosy.

[4:04] They bump into hot things or sharp things. And they don't feel the pain. And things get infected. And they lose fingers and toes. People sometimes lose their nose. Or their ear might drop off.

[4:16] You know, this is what leprosy means. And the Lord Jesus cared for the sick leper. And he made him clean. He cleansed him. He healed him. This poor man, he was covered with a horrible, foul disease.

[4:29] They used to ring bells to warn people as they walked the streets. But the Lord Jesus wasn't afraid to reach out and touch him. He cared about him. And the Lord Jesus is full of compassion.

[4:40] And whoever you are tonight, the Lord Jesus cares about you. He cares for every soul. He cares and he stretches forth his hand. And he will touch you. If you'll but cry out to him.

[4:51] Like these sick ones did. They cried out. The two blind men, they cried out. And the leper cried out. And knelt to him. And the Lord Jesus heard and saw and responded.

[5:04] And the Lord Jesus, he has moved with compassion today. When he sees the unhealthy, the bedridden, the afflicted, the sickly, the weak, the diseased and the maimed.

[5:15] And if you're unwell, he has compassion for you. You know, there's folk in our church who are concerned for loved ones. They're deeply unwell at this time. The Lord Jesus has compassion.

[5:26] He has compassion on the families that are affected by sickness. And he yearns. He burns. He feels for you. If you might be ever in that situation. And he brings the remedy, the relief.

[5:38] Certainly for the disease of sin. He is the one who can heal the sin-sick soul. And secondly, the Lord Jesus, not only does he see the city and he sees the sick, he sees the suffering.

[5:50] In Mark 5 verse 19, there's a demoniac. A demon-possessed man. He was slobbering up the mouth, smashing chains, crushing things and violent and raging man.

[6:02] A demoniac of the Gadarenes. And the Lord Jesus reached out and touched this man and set him free. And it says, the Lord Jesus in Mark 5 verse 19.

[6:13] The Lord Jesus says, go home to thy friends and tell them how great things the Lord had done for thee and have had compassion on thee. The Lord Jesus says, hey, I've had compassion on you.

[6:26] Go and tell somebody. Go and tell somebody that I care. Go and tell somebody that there is a saviour. And the devil-possessed man, this man possessed, driven to madness, the Lord Jesus was moved with compassion on him.

[6:44] He was moved. And he commanded the evil spirit to come out. Are you suffering tonight? He can set you free. The widow at Nain, Luke 7. Here was this woman in Luke 7 verse 12.

[6:56] The story is where they came to the city and the dead man being carried out and the mother was there. It was her only son. This is Luke 7 verse 12.

[7:07] And much people of the city were with her. And when the Lord saw her, it says in Luke 7 verse 13, he had compassion on her and said unto her, Weep not.

[7:18] And he came and touched the bear, the thing that he was lying on. And they that bear him stood still. And he said, Young man, I say unto thee, Arise.

[7:29] And he that was dead sat up and began to speak. And the Lord Jesus delivered him to his mother. Her only son was dead. She was really heartbroken. It was an awful situation.

[7:42] And what did the Lord Jesus do? Did he just walk past? No, he stopped in his tracks. He paid attention and he had compassion. And he reached out. The Lord Jesus saw this distressed mother.

[7:55] And he was moved with compassion. And he restored her son. There is hope for you mothers here tonight. Who are weeping for your lost sons and your unconverted daughters.

[8:07] The Lord Jesus has compassion. And he is tender. As he was always tender to his own mother. And he cares for you. You who mourn over those that have been taken from you.

[8:18] Jesus pities you. He sympathizes with your tears. He will dry them and give you his comfort. He was moved with compassion. He was moved with compassion. He was moved with compassion for the suffering ones.

[8:31] And he still moved with compassion for the suffering of our day today. He feels those who might have care and anxiety worn down by the things of life. And he's understanding.

[8:42] He knows your pain. Whether it be bitterness or heartache. Whatever is afflicting your heart. As you go through life. And you have losses and griefs and sad times.

[8:53] The Lord Jesus sees that. He still sees you today. From heaven's glory. He sees what's going on. And he cares. And he reaches out to you. He feels for you. In this time of heaviness.

[9:05] The hurting people of our city. The hurting people of Elizabeth. Davron Park. Smithfield. Salisbury. They need to hear his voice. The Saviour's voice. And we can communicate that.

[9:16] We can share his compassion. As his messengers of his message. To the stricken. The crushed. And the broken hearted. And we can communicate his love.

[9:27] In John 11 verse 34. Onward it talks about the context of Lazarus. The Lord Jesus' friend had passed away. And he said, where have you laid him?

[9:37] And they said unto him, Lord come and see. And John 11 verse 35. The shortest verse in the Bible. Jesus wept. Jesus wept. And then the Jews said, behold how he loved him.

[9:50] And some of them said, could not this man. Who opened the eyes of the blind. Of course that even this man should not have died. Jesus therefore again groaning in himself. Come unto the grave. He was groaning.

[10:02] He was broken up. He was moved in himself. As he saw this situation. He groans. He sobs. The Lord Jesus felt grief. He is touched with the feelings of our infirmities.

[10:13] It says that he was tempted in all points like as we are. It says that he knows what it's like to be a man. To be a human being. And to experience life with all its challenges.

[10:24] He experienced grief. Jesus wept. His eyes flow with tears for the city. As he saw the city. He weeps over it. He groans. He sobs. And he cares for people who are hurting.

[10:37] Compassion is what he had. Compassion means your pain in my heart. That's what the Lord Jesus experienced. He had the sense of sensing another's pain. Of another's hurt.

[10:48] In Mark 8 it says. I have compassion on the multitude. That's Mark 8 verse 2. He had compassion for the practical needs. Because they were there hungry.

[10:59] And he did something about that too. The Bible is full of compassion. The Lord Jesus is full of compassion. And in Luke 10. The good Samaritan. Of a man smashed up. Broken on the side of the road.

[11:10] People just walking past. And Luke 10 verse 33. Who did something different? A certain Samaritan. It says. Here was this man from another country. Another ethnic group. He stopped.

[11:22] And he came to where he was. And when he saw him. He had compassion on him. And he went to him. And bound up his wounds. Pouring in oil and wine. And set him on his own beast. And brought him to an inn.

[11:33] And took care of him. And the Lord Jesus commended this man. The good Samaritan. For taking time. To stop. And to take trouble. And to take care. You know. We were in the bus one day.

[11:44] And there was a broken down car. And we stopped. Didn't we? And Dushan helped to change a tyre. For this soldier man. Who was having trouble with his car. Now that's. We took the time. To stop.

[11:54] And lend a hand. And that's what the. Good Samaritan did. And that's what we need to do. To care about people. To stop from our busy lives. And take time. And take trouble.

[12:05] As the Lord Jesus did. And as he commended the good Samaritan. Who did. The good Samaritan. And he did something practical. He met the name. He didn't just talk about it.

[12:15] He didn't just. Put on some religious words. He actually did some actions. He poured in the oil and the wine. And he did something about the situation. And the Lord Jesus.

[12:26] He looks at the city. I believe he looks at the city. Our city. So called. City of churches. The city of Adelaide. And he weeps over it. Amen. He weeps over the state.

[12:37] Of this city of churches. Where now. The authorities. Are stopping. The preaching of the Bible. In our city of churches. So called. And we know. That the devil.

[12:48] Is in control. Largely of our world. As it says. He's the God of this world. He's the prince of this world. And we know. That really. It's in his clutches. It's in his control. And the Lord Jesus.

[12:58] Sees the city. And he weeps over it. Friends tonight. He still weeps. He sees the city. And he sees. The sick. And he sees. The suffering. And he sees the sinner.

[13:10] He sees the sinner. The Lord Jesus. Sees the sinful. And he has compassion on them. Luke 15. Prodigal son. The lost son. Who strays away.

[13:20] And it says. And he arose. And came to his father. But when he. Is when he the son. Was yet a great way off. His father saw him. And had compassion. And ran.

[13:31] And fell on his neck. And kissed him. He had compassion. And the father had compassion. On the son. The son undeserving. Straying. A waster. A vagabond.

[13:43] A wretch. A stinking. Filthy. Scumbag. Of a boy. Who blown the properties. The waste. Wasted his father's wealth. He had nothing of himself.

[13:55] To commend him. Yet he rose. He realized he was in a big state. And he arose. And came to his father. His father saw. A long way off. He saw that his son had turned.

[14:06] And he had compassion. The Lord Jesus. Watches over us. With compassion. And though we have strayed from the path. Though we have broken. And cursed. And we're weighed down.

[14:18] And failing. Because of our sin. Though we are ragged. And ruined. And helpless. He has compassion on you. He has compassion. The father hugs us. To his bosom. With his great love.

[14:30] With his great compassion. With his great tenderness. And he kisses us. And he holds us. Though we are filthy and foul. He welcomes the lost. He welcomes the sinful. That will draw close to him.

[14:41] As he draws us close. To his heart. Friends. Perhaps you're feeling. A bit like. That unloved. A friendless one. The Lord Jesus. It says. For you.

[14:51] For me. He's the friend of sinners. He comes. And he cares. And he's moved with compassion. It says of him. This man received of sinners. He is a friend of publicans.

[15:01] And sinners. He can be your friend. That's the wonderful truth of it. That God's word tells you. That God can become your friend. It's not that we deserve his friendship.

[15:14] But he offers it. He extends it. And he can help you. He can help the forgotten. The disheartened. And the outcast. And he can still receive the guilty.

[15:27] He offers you his friendship. We care for you. Who are not saved. It's a serious business. The Bible says. It's a fearful thing. To fall into the hands. Of the living God.

[15:38] We need to fear him. And care about our soul. And get right. And trust him. And he provides that mercy. To everyone. It says he provides the throne of grace for us.

[15:49] A mercy seat. A place of grace. A place of mercy. That we may come. And obtain grace to help. In time of need. And he helps us. By his Holy Spirit.

[16:00] We can bring our petitions to him. And he has sent his spirit. To help our infirmities. To teach us. How to pray. Matthew 9. But when he saw the multitudes.

[16:10] He was moved with compassion on them. Because they were like sheep. Without a shepherd. That's Matthew 9. 36. He saw them like sheep. As the Bible says of sheep.

[16:21] That all we like sheep. Have gone astray. He cares for the fainting. And the lost. He cares for the lost ones. The strained ones. Like a shepherd does. And he has moved with compassion.

[16:32] His heart cares. For those who strain. And his heart bleeds. As it bled. At Calvary's tree. The Lord Jesus. His great heart.

[16:44] Was. As someone has put it. That he died of a broken heart. As he. Basically. Expired on the cross. With his. His heart beating. For you. For me.

[16:54] And bleeding. For you. For me. It says of. The Lord Jesus. In Luke 1. Verse 78. We see. That it's really. Because of the heart of God.

[17:05] That we have salvation. It says there. In Luke 1. Verse 78. Talks about. Through the tender mercy. Of our God. The tender mercy. Of our God.

[17:16] Now that word. Tender mercy. The tender means. The spleen. The intestine. It's sort of the. The innermost part of you. I know. At times when. You might face.

[17:26] Youngsters. You might face it. At school. When you got a test. And you think. Oh. There's an exam today. Or there's a special. There's an assignment due. Or for us older ones. Maybe going to a job interview. Or having to do something.

[17:38] That's a bit scary. We get that. That feeling on the inside. That's the. The spleen. It's the intestines. It's that inward affection. And God was moved. With compassion. It's the same word.

[17:49] Moved with compassion. Tender. Means the intestine. The spleen. And mercy. Is that word compassion. It's the tender mercy. The compassion. The merciful compassion.

[18:00] It's the heart of God. That's why Christ was. Sent to us. It says. Through the tender mercy. Through the compassion. Of the almighty. The father. The day spring.

[18:11] The light. Has come. And visited us. For those. For them that sit. In darkness. And in the shadow of death. He says. That he sent his light. It's because of his compassion.

[18:24] That God. Sent Christ. Into this dark. And sinful world. And even more so. Into our. Dark. And sinful heart. God shined. His beaming light. His wonderful love.

[18:35] In Christ. He. He. Translated us. And it says. From the kingdom of darkness. Into his marvelous light. And that's the. The transformation. That happens. I know. I was speaking with an older man.

[18:46] Of late. And he was saying. Salvation. What is it? It's a changed life. It's a changed life. And some people.

[18:57] They profess to be saved. But it's not a changed life. They're kidding themselves. They haven't got the real thing. Because when Christ comes. And enters within. There's a changed life. There's a conversion.

[19:08] There's a transformation. You go from being lost. To being saved. You go from death. To life. You go from being lost. To being found. And that's what it means.

[19:18] As a Christian. That God changes you. When you get saved. There's a transformation. And he did that. Through his own. Transformation. And coming. In the incarnation. Incarnation.

[19:30] Come. Means flesh. It means God in flesh. Incarnation. God coming down. In the person. Of his son. And he can be touched. With the feeling of our infirmities.

[19:41] It says in Hebrews 4. Verse 15. He takes on. Our situation. He's been there. And he's been through. Life on this planet. It's like there's a story of.

[19:52] King James the 5th of Scotland. On occasion. He used to lay aside. His royal robe. Of a king. And he used to put on. The simple robe. By a peasant. And in such a disguise.

[20:03] He used to roam freely. About his land. In disguise. Imagine that. Youngsters today. Somebody famous. Came and visited. Our city. But they were wearing a disguise.

[20:15] Nobody realized. Who they were. And here was the king of Scotland. Walking around the streets. Making friends. With ordinary people. Talking to them. Appreciating their situations.

[20:25] Understanding their sorrow. And when he. Went back to his throne. This king. James the 5th of Scotland. He was able to better rule. Over his subjects. Because he understood.

[20:37] Their situation. The life that they were living. And that's exactly what the Lord Jesus did. Isn't it? He left heaven's glory. As the king almighty. And became a peasant. He became.

[20:47] A man. Much more than a man. Because he was still God. And yet. A man. With human limitations. And yet. Almighty God. And certainly.

[20:58] What was different was. Yet without sin. He was a perfect man. As well as perfect God. And so he came. In his incarnation. That showed his compassion. And in his passion.

[21:09] Itself. Showed his compassion. In his death. In his dying for us. On the cross. Jesus is moved. With compassion. He takes upon himself. The wick.

[21:20] As they lashed him. And thrashed his back. Till it was bleeding. And bruised. He has compassion. As his shoulders run with blood.

[21:33] The sword strikes the shepherd. That the sheep may escape. He was totally consumed with love. He showed his love at the cross. And after he had died. He rose again.

[21:44] He has gone into glory now. Living at the right hand of the father. And for us who believe. He is there. Pleading for us. Praying for us. Interceding.

[21:55] Crying for us still. And his tender mercy. His tender heart. Pities the grace of his people. He is moved with compassion. What about you friends tonight?

[22:07] Just to close. Think about your situation. Have you got Christ within you? He calls you to compassion. Colossians 3 verse 12. It says put on therefore.

[22:18] In other words clothe yourselves. As the elect of God. Holy and beloved. Bowels. Now that word bowels. Is that. Is those 10 intestines again. It's that. Inside of us.

[22:29] It's the. It's the compassion. It's the inside of us. Bowels of mercies. There's that pity. That compassion. God says we should put on. Clothe ourselves with his mercy. With his compassion.

[22:40] And it goes on. In the context there. Of the life that we should live. In the context of relating to other people. We should clothe ourselves with compassion. We should clothe ourselves with compassion.
