At the cross a transaction takes place - a great exchange between God and man. The guilty one is replaced by the guiltless one. The just punishment due against us is poured out on Another. The heaviness of divine wrath is carried by Another. And by His precious Blood given in Grace our stains are cleansed and our debt is cleared. Hallelujah!
[0:00] The great exchange, the great transaction if you like.! Our Lord says, this is my body broken for you.
[0:14] ! My body broken for you. An exchange, a transaction. There's two parties, two people, two parties in this great exchange that we're talking of here. Firstly, you. You. He says, my body is broken for you. Consider this. You were there. You were here in this passage. You. Each one. You.
[0:47] You. Were. In great debt. Who knows what it's like to be in debt? It's a load, isn't it? It's a weight. You were in great debt. You were the guilty one. You were the unworthy one. And he speaks to you, to me. You. You were enslaved. You were a prisoner. Who's ever been to prison? Whoop. I was on the right side of the bar, so I don't know about you.
[1:20] You were enslaved. You were chained. You were captive. Held prisoner. Held prisoner. And before his grace found you, you were doomed. Damned. Death road. Death road. That's another D. I didn't have that one. Fit for eternal flame. Fit for eternal flame. Think of that.
[1:43] We can't conceive of that, can we? That we were on doomed, damned, fit for eternal flame. And you were there that day. You were there that day. That day. Your old sinner man was there. Your sin was there that day. The Bible says your sin was there in that body on the tree.
[2:05] That's horrific, isn't it? That's more horrific than what he suffered really, is that our vileness and our sinfulness was there. The exceeding sinfulness of our sin was there. You were there.
[2:18] The other party in this transaction, this great exchange, was him. He tells us, my body is broken for you. My body is broken for you. He was publicly humiliated, shamed, scorned, ill-treated. Why?
[2:43] He says for you. He says for you. He says for me. He was scourged. He was mocked, derided, abused, torn, in agony.
[2:57] He was beaten for you. He was beaten for you. Afflicted for you. Spat upon for you, for me. The grossness of it. The unjustness of it, really, isn't it? The injustice of it. Forsaken by his closest friends. Forsaken by his own father. Why? For you.
[3:25] It brings it all home, doesn't it? When we think that this was not just some act of history. This was something for you and for me.
[3:37] And when our Lord Jesus was on that cross, he had you on his mind. You that trust him, he had you on his mind that day. As he knew you would trust him. And at Calvary, he had you personally in his mind. He had your sins in his own body on that tree.
[3:55] And he paid the full payment that had to be paid for your fault. For your fault. Not his own. For your wrongdoing. Not his own. Your guilt. Your death sentence. And mine.
[4:09] He endured the full weight. The full weight. Of the cross and of the vented wrath of God. Against our sin. The punishment we deserve. As your substitute.
[4:23] How can we conceive that? How can we? We can't grapple with it, really, can we? It's beyond our imagination. It boggles our minds. The blood obliterates all the charges that were laid up against you.
[4:37] You know, when someone is charged, the police give them a charge sheet. Is that what they call it? Well, all the various things. All the misdemeanors. You know? The ones they've caught you for, that is. Isn't it?
[4:51] When you go to court. The ones they've caught you for. It's not all of them. But Jesus took all of them. All of them. All of our sin. All of the wrath of God that we deserve.
[5:03] All of the punishment we justly deserve. And he obliterated all the charges against you. Your name is cleared. Your name is cleared today. And there's no more charges. He's nailed them to the cross.
[5:17] There's no more punishment due to you. Even though the world would say you're guilty and in his eyes you're not. You're set free. You're declared free from guilt.
[5:31] And now you're declared just. Just. Isn't that beautiful? You don't have to bear any punishment for what you've done. Because it's already been dealt. The punishment.
[5:43] And so now you. You are born again. That trust him. Born again into God's family. You're delivered from the power of darkness.
[5:54] He's struck the chains. He's broken the fetters. He's torn the bars. Delivered. And your debt is cancelled now. Paid in full.
[6:06] Stamped. Paid in full. Wow. Wow. You know. When you pay off a debt. I think I've yet to do that in my life. Just about.
[6:17] You get to that point. Wow. And the bank gives you the title or whatever. And it's mine. And that's what he says about you and about me. You're mine.
[6:28] Your accounts are chosen before the foundation of the world. That you should be holy and without blame before him in love. You are creative. You are designed.
[6:39] You are made for his pleasure. His workmanship. Of his design. For his good works. And now. You that are born again.
[6:50] He is still there. For you. Risen. Ascended. Glorified. Interceding. Praying for us. Coming again. One day. And expected at any moment.
[7:02] Our saviour. And he says this do. This do. Until. His returning. Until then. And so we honour him today. Until then.
[7:12] Thank you.
