Take your hymnal. I have one deep supreme desire That I may be like Jesus.
To this I fervently aspire That I may be like Jesus.
I want my heart His throne to be So that a watching world may see His likeness shining forth in me I want to be like Jesus.
O perfect life of Christ my Lord I want to be like Jesus My recompense and my reward That I may be like Jesus His Spirit fill my humbling soul His power all my life control
My deepest prayer My highest goal That I may be like Jesus Amen Well, I would like to conclude tonight The lesson we began this morning The lesson we began this morning to men We're not basically talking to fathers We're talking to men I would remind you that the Bible usually speaks In men's terms Even when it's speaking about mankind But there are places in the Word of God
That speak directly to men That have no application At least in its primary source To anyone other than men I'd ask you tonight to turn, of course To Ephesians 5 Now I'm going to start there But while you turn I'm going to review for a second The Bible does designate That Christian men, believing men Have some qualities Have some traits Have some character And some conduct That unbelieving men do not have I'll not take time this evening To repeat my introduction Maybe some of it will be reviewed As we go along I would remind you this morning We only looked at three scriptures Two of them dealt with the subject of manliness When David was charging Solomon He said, be strong Act like a man In other words In the time of David
In the environment in which he lived There was a designation Called manliness Reminds you that the word man In original language Especially in the Latin language Transferred also to the Hebrew and Greek Starts with the word V-I-R V-I-R From which we get our English word Virtuous Whatever is virtuous Is manly In fact Those phrases Or words Which we usually Associate In the English language With women The Bible associates With men What is virtue?
We talk about virtuous women We looked in Philippians 4-8 Whatsoever things are true Whatsoever things are honest Whatsoever things are pure Whatsoever things are lovely Whatsoever things are good report If there be any virtue Think on these things What does God expect of Christian men?
He expects them to be virtuous Number one He expects them to be honest Number two He expects them to be honorable That's a word we ought to think about a lot today Number three Number three He expects them to be pure It's a very interesting thing We talk about pure women We very seldom talk about pure men Paul wrote to Timothy Keep thyself pure A Christian man ought to be pleasing The word is lovely in our New Testament A Christian man ought to have a good reputation These are virtues David said to Solomon Solomon Be a man Same thing is true In 1 Corinthians 16 When Paul is saying To the children at Corinth And they were babies You remember They acted like children He said be strong Be vigilant!
Quit you like men! What was he saying to the Corinthians? There is some characteristic about men That sets them apart As an illustration When you are trying to show maturity Like a man Now from that little introduction What I am doing You all know A believing man Is to be Now to that phrase I am adding words Right?
A Christian man Is to be virtuous A Christian man Is to be a man The one I added on this morning is A Christian man Is to be Understanding And our text was 1 Corinthians 14 Be not children in understanding But in understanding Men are to understand How many times Has your wife said to you fellas You just don't understand How many times Who said to you You just don't understand Now fellas Christian men Are to understand It is a mental term Are to think Now no man can think Without the Holy Spirit No man can think Without being saved It is impossible All right
That is the second thing I add to you And it is awful hard To talk to men Without going to the passages On husbands It is almost impossible You know Ephesians 5 Right?
Look at verse 25 And I pick up the next thing I want to add to our little phrase Believing men are to Are to And the phrase is Love Now it reminds you of something Or you should be aware Maybe you aren't That when the Bible talks about love It is more often designated to men Than it is to women Did you know that?
You are aware that God is always in the masculine tense Aren't you? Christ was a man God who is rich in mercy And his grace wherewith he Love is a man's term Now we don't use that term Now they as men It is probably because Love has gotten a balance You will notice here That he says in verse 25 Although speaking to husbands I think I can stretch the point To give it to men Husband love your wife That is an interesting phrase Men are to love Now of course you come back to the designation of love Christian men are to love Now all of you know 1 Corinthians 13 When we taught this paragraph in Ephesians 5
As a result of the filling of the Holy Spirit I turned you to 1 Corinthians 13 No human man can ever love Apart from the Lord Jesus Christ And the possession of the Holy Spirit Not on a biblical basis It is not natural for men to love Did you know that?
Basically it is not natural for women to love I think I am going to stop for a second And turn you to 1 Corinthians 13 again Because I think men ought to read it Men are to love Believing men are to love Okay that is what he says Did you ever read 1 Corinthians 13 men?
And when I get on this subject I know I am going to get into trouble I am going to get in trouble when I get home I am always in trouble Because women do not look at love like men do Now some men don't look at love biblically I would remind you that the idea we have in the 20th century for love is That love gets and gets and gets and gets, right?
That is 20th century love That is not biblical love towards a man When Christ is trying to show us something manly He begins with love For God so loved Even in a masculine tense I won't read all of 1 Corinthians 13 But look at verse 4 Interesting phrase, isn't it?
Love suffers long I reminded you this morning That everything we Americans identify with women The Bible identifies with men We talk about virtuous women The Bible talks about virtuous men We talk about honesty We expect ladies to be honest But men can lie We talk about ladies being lovely Lovely But God says men are to be lovely We talk about ladies being pleasing The Bible talks about men being pleasing We've got our terms mixed up, people Look what he says Love suffers long That's a word for bearing The worst patients they tell me are men Most wives when a man gets sick at home says Oh, I can't take much more of this Kindly notice this In the areas of practicality In which we deal As servants of God
And trying to help people It is never very often The man that forbears anything It is the picture of the dear Little Christian wife Who is always meek Who is manifesting love Look at the second phrase Love is kind You remember what David said to Solomon After he gave him that charge Be strong Act like a man Keep the amendments of God Then he said Be kind to Barzillai Love is kind Now you are aware That men have a problem of being kind In the way they manifest it Some of you ladies ain't too smart You know ladies identify with actions by how they act Now get in trouble by saying this The only reasons we have misunderstandings and problems is because We don't act the way people want us to act, right?
We have ideas that if somebody does this then this takes place and if it doesn't there's something wrong That's exactly what happens in our homes Kindness is not always giving in is it?
Is it? But biblical love which is a man's responsibility a believing man is to love is kind in his own atmosphere and his own personality and his own way Look at the third phrase Love is not jealous That's hard Love does not vaunt itself In other words love does not boast Christian men are not proud Love is not puffed up It's not arrogant It is the opposite of humility Love does not behave itself improperly Now our attitude in America is It's the woman that has to act right I would remind you in the Bible It's the man that's to act right If he's truly lovely Men gall me Look fellas
There is such a thing as being improper Men are normally vulgar And the moment you accept Christ Some of that hard thing ought to rub off and get away from yourself A man does not talk improperly He does not dress improperly Love does not behave itself as it says here Unseemly It doesn't act unsavory Over the centuries Men were supposed to be bold and arrogant And all this stuff And that makes them manly That is not what makes a biblical man Go on Love does not seek her own Love does not seek self How about you as a Christian?
Is it your point with biblical love to do all you can for others Or expect others to do all for you? My wife will not like this But I think all of you men ought to go through a time when your wife is sick and put in the hospital I'm serious about that My family and I learned a lot When she was in the hospital I found out that I could go back doing things I did 30 years ago I could cook I could do all these things I could do all these things If I could do them when she's sick, why can't I do them when she's well?
Huh? I could do all these things I could do all these things I could do all these things I could do all these things If I could do them when she's sick, why can't I do them when she's well? Huh?
You got the idea, fellas, you see That we are to be waited on Where do we get that idea? What did I say to you this morning?
A brute lives for today A man lives for the future It is not being satisfied right now that proves you're a man Look what he says Love is not quickly irritated Isn't that interesting?
Love does not think any evil Look at verse 7 You all can quote this Love bears all things Few men do Love believes all things Few men do Love hopes all things Love endures all things Believing men are to love If you read Ephesians 5 25 far enough You'll find that it says The love which this produces Will always produce sacrifice Did you know that?
The Christian man Because he manifests biblical love In his own concept Not in the concept that you think he has to do it Is always willing to sacrifice I like what brother Bryant said this morning I think some of you people missed the boat You know very little about Jews, right?
What did he say? Never tell a Jew you love him Show him you love him Huh? Huh?
Okay Believing men understand Believing men love To the place that it produces Sacrifice Go with me to Timothy 1 Timothy chapter 2 Now we come to one That really concerns me You are aware When we taught ladies on Mother's Day We use 1 Timothy 2 And we only had two things to teach ladies You see we have six things to teach men Ladies are to be taught how to dress And ladies are to be taught what a meek and quiet spirit is But to men Notice verse 8 of 1 Timothy 2 You got it?
I will therefore that men What's the next word class? Now kindly notice this is not mankind This does not include women Because verse 9 singles out likewise women So verse 8 is separate from verse 9 And verse 9 is separate from verse 8 He is talking about men as men Not human nature or not humankind or mankind He's talking about men Kindly notice believing men are to pray And I believe this with all my heart when I say it That one of the greatest weakness of believing men Is prayer One of the greatest neglects of Christian men Is prayer All you have to do
Is to go to any Bible believing church Where they have a prayer meeting And see what the majority is The majority is women And the Holy Spirit knew that men would have trouble praying Let's be honest Most of you ladies sitting here tonight come to prayer meeting Do most of you men?
Do most of you men? I can take you to every church in the country That teaches the word of God And has a prayer meeting And it will have more women in prayer meeting And it will have women coming Whose men are fine Christians Who are there Sunday morning and Sunday night But they never come to prayer meeting Why?
Because we've gotten the idea And the Bible is contrary to all of our philosophies That prayer is women's work And Paul says I will therefore that men pray everywhere The work of praying is really designated to men Are you aware that except in the privacy of their homes In the Old Testament Jewish women never prayed?
Prayer in the Old Testament was left up to men Do you ever wonder why the Pharisee and the publican Were in the temple in the afternoon hour? There were no women there praying The men went there to pray Believing men pray And of course Paul gives us some instructions here I will therefore that men pray everywhere Lifting up holy hands Now he doesn't say to pray with your hands in the air He has given us the conduct of purity And Paul has already done that in Philippians 4 Whatsoever things are pure I sometimes would ask And would be interesting in the answer Why fine, Christian, loving, faithful, intelligent, biblical men Are not interested in praying!
Christian men are to pray And Paul adds Without wrath That happens to be meaning with kindness And without doubting That means with some faith Let's stop for a second review men How many of you are biblical men tonight?
How many of you have the virtues laid down in the word of God For a Christian man? How many of you men as godly men try to understand Use your head Grow in maturity in your mind How many of you love?
You know it's easy to say I love you But that doesn't mean it's true Biblical love produces sacrifice How many of you men are interested in praying?
I don't know why it is But God seems to want men to pray And it's the weakest area of our life It's the neglected area of our life Turn to Titus chapter 2 Now when Paul writes to Titus He does some marvelous things And we'll just stay here for a few minutes And that's the end, okay?
Paul by the Holy Spirit Writes to different age groups When he writes Titus It's interesting to me Start with me at verse 2 That the aged men be sober Now all of these listings are characteristic of a believing man Now soberness is not a facial expression Has nothing to do with a facial expression Really the word should not be sober The word is self-discipline It is a word that you find later on in this verse Which is temperate The word sober should be the word temperate It's the same word that's used in the fruits of the Spirit Galatians 5, 22 and 23 Now you pick all of these traits up men A Christian man is to be self-disciplined Now here you attach it to the aged men
I'd remind you of something The elderly men are supposed to be more spiritual than the younger men Look at the second thing he does He picks up a word which we found in Philippians this morning The aged men are to be grave That's again the word honorable The Greek language uses it in the essence of being able to keep a promise To carry out what you say To do what you say you'll do What you promise to do is honorable In the American culture it started out with the judges The honorable judge so and so You remember politicians are always introduced as honorable That's a lie But in the American environment when it was first started Those who were judges and those who were in high office were honorable
That's the word he uses He's not talking about unbelievers Here you have in your King James Bible the word temperate Basically this is the word discreet It happens to be a mental word for sound mind I've pointed this out so many times you get tired of listening to it In Mark 5 when the demoniac was healed We find him sitting Clothed There to have a foundation They are to lead Now you come to the fourth one in verse 2 which interests me It says men you're to be sound The word is healthy Healthy
What are you to be healthy in? Well three things Healthy in faith How many women you know have more faith than men? Let me ask you a question tonight How many families Would have no spiritual leadership if it wasn't for the mother?
How many families would have no spiritual leadership if it wasn't for the mother? How many?
It is mother that packs the kids off to church It's the mother that encourages them to go to Sunday School It's the mother that leads them and tries to show them the Christian example. The father is too busy.
Paul never wrote that aged women are to be healthy in faith. He wrote it to aged men. It is the man who is healthy when it comes to faith.
It's no wonder we don't have boys that are interested in spiritual things because there are few fathers interested in spiritual things. If someone's going to come to church on Sunday night, it's usually the mother.
And then the father says, well, the kids can stay home with me. Why? If anyone's going to bring the kids to Sunday school, it's the mother.
The father comes to church. She doesn't come to Sunday school. Then he wonders why the boys are not interested in Sunday school or Bible school after they get to a certain age. It is the father who is to be stable.
He's to be healthy in faith. Secondly, he's to be healthy in our word, which we just studied Ephesians 5. He's to be healthy in love. And he's to be healthy in endurance or steadfastness.
He's the foundation. Drop down, if you will, to verse 6. He goes from aged men to young men.
It's interesting to me that young men have a great responsibility. Young men, likewise, exhort to be sober-minded.
There's our word again. Self-disciplined. Able to think. The man. Then you come to something that interests me.
In all things. Did you ever see that phrase? In all things? Not just in some things. In all things.
Now he's going to add. Showing thyself a pattern, an example of good works. Did you ever read that? Doesn't say the mother is to be an example.
Says men are to be example. That's what he's after. Now I'm interested in something. What are the good works he's to be an example of?
In doctrine. The word is teaching. I'm going to stretch a point. Men are to be interested in the Bible.
That's where doctrine comes from. Christian man, if I take your wife and you and set you side by side and give you a biblical quiz, who would pass the best?
Huh? Most generally the woman, right? Why? Because of the fact we are not being biblical.
You are to show your pattern of good works in teaching. Showing uncorruptness, soundness, gravity or honor, sincerity. All I can see across this page is the man is to be stable in spiritual things.
Now he says something that interests me. Sound speech. Sound speech.
A Christian man talks the way he's supposed to talk. Isn't that interesting?
Sound speech. Speech that cannot be condemned. Let me ask you, Christian man. How do you talk? How do you think?
How much interest do you have in the Bible? Oh, I know what men say to me. Pastor, I'm so tired when I get home. I can't even read the Bible. Usually when someone says that to me, I ask them a question.
Do you read a newspaper? Do you read a magazine? Do you watch TV? You're not too tired to do that, right?
No, that's not right. Men are to be examples. Examples in teaching.
Examples in thinking. Examples in faith. Examples in stability. Examples in interest in the word of God. Examples if they will in intelligent things. Examples in how they talk.
Men, Christian men, are to be examples. What did Paul write to Timothy? But be thou an example of the believer.
He didn't write it to a woman. He wrote it to a young man who was trying to lead older people. Be thou an example of the believer.
In word, in charity, in conduct, in spirit. We don't believe these things today. May I remind you that as I said this morning, a Christian man stands out as a man.
When you go to work tomorrow morning, fellas, how will you act? When you go home tonight, how will you act towards your family?
Some man said to me not too long ago, well, pastor, I know what I should do, but if I went home and acted that way, there'd be shots of shock. They'd think I was sick. Well, shock them.
Shock them. The hardest people to move today are men.
And unless the Holy Spirit moves them, no preacher can. Because men are difficult to change. So let me just review for you as I close.
Men are to understand. Men are to love. Men are to pray.
Men are to think. Men are to be examples. Men are to be the stable factor in regards to the home. Men are to lead.
I know what some of you ladies are saying. My husband won't do this. How can I force him to do what he's supposed to do? You can't!
But he's a Christian, you can ask him to. If you're a man here tonight that hasn't accepted his responsibility, I wonder if you wouldn't think about it.
God expects us to be his men. Gracious God, thank you for the time in the word today.
It is the word which speaks to our heart. And apart from you, we can do nothing. Everyone here tonight has studied the word of God.
Most of them certainly know you. Every man here tonight has certainly heard the verses we've looked at tonight before. And apart from the Holy Spirit, nothing will take place.
We thank you for the word of God which is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path. We pray for each man that's here tonight, those that know Christ. There may be a man here that has a problem.
He may have a burden. He may vacillate between the word of God and his own thinking. He may give in to his feelings. He may give in to the conduct of others.
Lord, if it would honor you, may that man tonight trust the Holy Spirit who indwells them. Help us as men to be biblical, to act like men.
Help us to understand. Help us to think. Help us to pray. And most of all, help us to be the stable example that we're supposed to be.
thank you for your presence. Encourage us because we've been in the house of God and fellowshiped with the saints. For we pray in Christ's name.
And God's people will say together, Amen. I'd like to close the day by singing a hymn. Thank you.
Thank you.
