[0:00] Let's turn to God's Word, to the book of John, the Gospel of John, in chapter 21. John 21.
[0:17] As we said to the boys and girls, finishing off our study, of course there's no time for us in 12 weeks, in 20 weeks, to look at all the interactions Jesus has in the book of John.
[0:31] So we can bring our time to an end in our study by jumping to the final chapter, John 21. Let's hear the Word of God. After these things, Jesus showed himself again to the disciples at the Sea of Tiberias, and this wise showed he himself.
[0:51] These were together, Simon Peter and Thomas called Didymus, and Nathaniel of Cana and Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two other of his disciples.
[1:03] Simon Peter saith unto them, I go a-fishing. They saith unto him, We also go with thee. They went forth and entered into a ship immediately, and that night they caught nothing.
[1:15] But when the morning was now come, Jesus stood on this shore. The disciples knew not that it was Jesus. Then Jesus saith unto them, Children, have ye any meat?
[1:29] They answered him, No. And he said unto them, Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and ye shall find. They cast therefore, and now they were not able to draw it in for the multitude of fishes.
[1:42] Therefore the disciple whom Jesus loved saith unto Peter, It is the Lord. Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he girt his fishers coat unto him, for he was naked, and had cast himself into the sea.
[1:59] And the other disciple came on a little ship, for we were not far from land, but as there were two hundred cubits, dragging the net with fishes. As soon as they were come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid thereon, and bread.
[2:18] Jesus saith unto them, Bring off the fish which ye have now caught. Simon Peter went up, and drew the net to land full of great fishes, and hundred and fifty and three.
[2:31] And for all there were so many, yet was not the net broken. Jesus saith unto them, Come and dine. And none of the disciples durst ask him, Who art thou, knowing that it was the Lord?
[2:45] Jesus then cometh, and taketh bread, and giveth him, and fish likewise. This is now the third time that Jesus showed himself to his disciples, after that he was risen from the dead.
[2:57] So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these?
[3:08] He saith unto him, Yea, Lord, thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs. He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me.
[3:25] He saith unto him, Yea, Lord, thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep. He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me.
[3:39] Peter was grieved, because he saith unto him the third time, lovest thou me. And he saith unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things, and knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.
[3:54] Verily, verily, I say unto thee, When thou wast young, thou girdest thyself, and walkst whither thou wouldest. When thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird thee, and carry thee whither thou wouldest not.
[4:12] This spake he, signifying by what death he should glorify God. When he had spoken of this, he said unto him, Follow me. Then Peter, turning about, saith the disciple whom Jesus loved following, which also leaned on his breast at supper, and said, Lord, which is he that betrayeth thee?
[4:35] Peter, seeing him, saith to Jesus, Lord, and what shall this man do? Jesus saith unto him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee?
[4:46] Follow thou me. Then went this saying abroad among the brethren, The disciple should not die. Yet Jesus said not unto him, He shall not die.
[4:57] But, if I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? This is the disciple which testifieth of these things, and wrote these things, And we know that his testimony is true.
[5:12] And there are also many other things which Jesus did, for which, if they should be written down in every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written.
[5:24] Amen. Give praise to God for his holy, his perfect word. Let's again sing to God's praise. This time singing from Psalm 34.
[5:41] Psalm 34. Psalm 34.
[5:51] We're going to sing verses 1 down to verse 7 of the psalm. Psalm 34, verses 1 down to verse 7. God will I bless all times, His praise my mouth shall still express, My soul shall boast in God, the meek shall hear with joyfulness, Extol the Lord with me, that us exalt his name together.
[6:12] I sought the Lord, he heard and did me from, all fears deliver. Psalm 34, verses 1 to 7. To God's praise. Psalm 34. Psalm 34.
[6:23] Psalm 34. Psalm 34. So great I bless, all times is trace, My heart shall still express, My soul shall hold in all the meek, shall I give, shall I give with joyfulness, shall I give with joyfulness, and so on my Lord with me, let us exalt His name together.
[7:16] As all the Lord with me, I saw the Lord with me, and now did me from all years be in, I saw the Lord with me, I saw it all my heart not Savior, but now did me from all heard, I saw the Lord with me, Thank you.
[8:20] MPH Staff of those that you have been here and have been here in heaven Let's turn back to the chapter we had.
[8:58] John 21. John chapter 21. We take verse 12 of the chapter of our text but of course looking, as we said to the children at this account, John 21 and verse 12 Jesus saith unto them come and dine.
[9:20] Come and dine. As we said, here we are at the end of our study, our brief study looking at the interactions that Jesus had with with those around him and we looked up to this point at Jesus meeting those who as of yet didn't know him.
[9:42] Those who as of yet didn't worship him. He finds them while he seeks them out. He seeks them out. he gets them, he finds them and he tells them he shares with them who he is.
[9:58] He leads them gently and carefully to himself. We've seen week after week of the saving power of Jesus in the lives of those who he encounters.
[10:10] for our final time in the study we find ourselves in this chapter and Jesus is here of course he's not meeting with those who are new to him he's meeting with his disciples.
[10:24] For the final few times he's meeting up with those who knew him so well who were so close to him. But in some senses nothing changes.
[10:35] as he meets his disciples and we look at these verses very briefly together today we see him doing the same thing he does time and time again in our previous week's studies.
[10:48] He meets them where they are. He comes alongside them. He shows them where they are sinning. He shows them where they need his saving power and he revives them.
[11:00] Of course the disciples are believers of course they are. They know Jesus. They love Jesus. They are saved by Jesus. They trust in him. But we'll see in a second they still need his help. They still need his support.
[11:15] As we bring our time to an end in the study this is our reminder to your brother dear sister not one of us is so experienced in our walk. Not one of us is so far along in our journey with our saviour that we don't still need that constant support that constant help that he gives us.
[11:35] And we'll see that today how he helps how he cares for and how he looks after his precious people. For any here again as the weeks go on I get to know you a wee bit more but I still don't know where some of you stand with the Lord.
[11:53] Any here who as of yet don't know Jesus for yourself hear in these verses in these few verses hear and be reminded of what it is to know Jesus.
[12:06] The more important than that to have him know you. How that could be true for your life too even this day. So looking at these verses just under three very broad headings.
[12:18] First of all looking at verses 1 to verse 3 we see the return of the disciples. Verses 1 to verse 3. Then verses 4 to verse 8 we see the disciples recognise Jesus.
[12:32] And finally verses 9 to verse 14 we see them receive rest from Jesus. So return recognised and rest. Very broad headings.
[12:42] Very general headings. But it helps us as we go forward. First of all verses 1 down to verse 3 return. We see John reminds us of when it's taking place.
[12:58] Verse 1 after these things Jesus showed himself again to the disciples. These things referring to Jesus appearing to the disciples we see this taking place in the previous chapter.
[13:10] We all know the account of the tomb being found empty and in Christ appearing to the disciples in the locked and closed room and so on and so on. In verse 27 of the previous chapter we see the encounter of Jesus and Thomas some may say doubting Thomas but scared Thomas worried Thomas honest Thomas we see that take place in the previous chapter but here we have in this new chapter they've seen the risen Jesus they've seen him already they've been in his presence they've watched him in front of them and here we find John telling us in his first few verses of chapter 21 in verse 3 the disciples are here gathered together there's a few of them together the fishermen are together for by the sea of Tiberias by this big lake and what happens Simon Peter saith unto them I go fishing literally I'm going to fish the language here is very casual it's very normal he just says
[14:16] I'm going fishing I'm off to fish literally I'm off to fish we could say with respect that's what he's saying I'm off to fish I'm going I'm going to fish well fair enough he's a fisherman he's allowed to fish why is this so strange why is this so why is this a point being made to us but we see as always that scripture there's no wasted words in scripture and the way this is worded to us it's there to bring attention to what he's saying verse 3 it's worded in a way but we're supposed to stop and think what's taking place why does John make so clear that he said he's going fishing then he says that the disciples say with him that we're going with him verse 3 could simply say the disciples went out to fish full stop it would still give us the same information wouldn't it the disciples were fishing when they saw Jesus and we could skip verses 2 and verses 3 and verses 4 but no they're there for us for a reason why are we told so clearly they decided to go fishing well some might say quite clearly quite simply they went fishing because they were fishermen it's what they wanted to do it's what they always did and that's not wrong some say well obviously they went fishing for food because they needed something perhaps not wrong they went fishing because this was their livelihood we're not wrong but why does scripture tell us they went fishing it tells us because all these things are true this is what they always did they always went fishing they were fishermen they always needed the fish to keep them going this was their livelihood but what's taking place in their lives that makes this so strange see they were fishermen they did do this but they did this two or three years ago
[16:24] Jesus found them fishing he was there at the start with them and he tells them to follow him we saw that at the start of our study we saw Nathanael we saw the instruction of Jesus to follow him in these first few verses we see that these men have returned to fishing of going back to the old ways they've seen the risen Lord they spent time with the risen Jesus but then he was gone again he was gone again we see what's happening he appears then he goes again he appears to teach them something then he leaves them again for a while and what scripture doesn't tell us is how long the gaps are between his appearing and his appearing again there's discussion and debate over that but we don't simply know by the end of chapter 20 he's with them in the room he's appeared to them they've all seen him and then he is gone again after these things we don't know how long they were waiting for Jesus to appear again but it was long enough that Peter has decided he's going to go fishing he can't wait any longer for Jesus to appear again he's going fishing the disciples can't wait any longer they're going fishing dear friends they've seen the risen saviour they have seen as we see in chapter 20 the marks in his hand and his side they have been there with him experienced his risen glorious body they've been in his presence and still because he leaves them for a short while they go back fishing they go back fishing they're going back to their old patterns of life they've had we could say with respect the spiritual high of being with the risen saviour saviour they've been in the same room as their risen saviour they've seen him and talked with him they've seen he is physically real he is there in front of them they were there they worshipped him there we see the words of Thomas of course my lord and my god they've been in his presence and even verse 30 of the previous chapter many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples which are not in this book he did things and showed them things we don't even know about they've seen his glory and he leaves them for a short time again and the second he leaves them they begin to go back into the old ways again we think how can Peter and the disciples they've seen him with their own eyes how can they even think just now about going back to the old ways we think how can they do that they've seen him hang on the cross they've been devastated as they see their saviour die in front of them they think well that's the end they lose all hope they then see him alive in front of them in his glorified body their hope restored you think well surely now their whole lives will be dedicated simply to serving their saviour they've seen their risen lord very quickly very quickly they begin to go back into their old lives yet again they go back to fishing dear brother dear sister as we read this we might first of all think to ourselves well how can we do that that makes no sense and those who have perhaps been on the walk for longer you if you're being honest you see yourself and I see myself in the lives of your disciples with respect and this doesn't quite capture what took place but the words are the best we have the spiritual high
[20:25] the spiritual reality the spiritual mountaintop experience of seeing and being with the risen lord that was good for them yes if they needed that yes but the second that spiritual mountaintop experience is gone the second Jesus leaves the room we begin to slowly drift back into the old ways and the old patterns brothers and sisters how true is this for us we might think these disciples are not right and we might think that we're being so silly but we ourselves do it again and again don't we how many times how many Lord's days how many even private times of prayer and of study of scripture do we leave our rooms where we're so elated and we're so full of the love of our saviour and then within a day a day even an hour at times even a minute at times we find ourselves then caught up back in the things of the world we find ourselves suddenly deflated and forgetting just so wondering the glory of who our saviour is if we're being very honest very honest
[21:31] I say this carefully but let's be honest how many hours have we sat under God's word how many hours have you sat in this place and you've heard and been reminded of the glory and the wonder and the love of Jesus and you hear it and you love it and you believe it but the second you go home you forget it or you just don't think enough about it or at all about it we're all guilty of that the disciples are guilty we are guilty of it we all as aware end up going back fishing sometimes they aren't in sin in fishing really but they aren't sinning by doing this but they're not reacting to the reality that they're now seeing in essence Jesus has made them what?
[22:15] fishers of men they now have a whole new job a whole new reality and instead we find them going back to just fishing for fish back to what we knew and did best and what happens what happens when the disciples go back or at least begin to go back to their old ways the end of verse 3 they catch nothing they catch absolutely nothing now we might think that's a common occurrence for fishermen but we know historically and we know now even the name has changed over the years that the Sea of Tiberias it is and it was teeming with fish it is chock-a-pock of fish it was jam-packed with fish it was fish in the Sea of Tiberias it was known as an almost go-to fishing spot an almost guaranteed catch and we know this outside the scripture we know this historically we know historically the Sea of Tiberias was an incredible fishing spot and for this boatload of experienced fishermen to not catch a single thing in a whole night is quite unbelievable quite unbelievable but we see of course they caught nothing the Lord wasn't going to bless them as they try and do things their way again
[23:50] Christian dear brother dear sister how true it is for our lives and we know us ourselves when we try and do things our own way and you know yourself whatever that means or how that's looked in your life but we all have that experience we try and do things our way and our style and to our plans if the Lord isn't in it he will not bless it that's true as a congregation it's true as individuals we feel this we know this and we confess just now that we learn and we don't learn from our mistakes these days these plans we've made plans for our future plans for ourselves plans for our families plans for our jobs and so on and so on we make these plans we work out these plans we carry out these plans we haven't taken these things to the Lord like the disciples we catch nothing the plans don't work out they go at times completely to pot they fall to bits because we haven't had the
[24:52] Lord's plan at heart the disciples are to be fishers of men they're to dedicate their lives serving their saviour there's no sin in fishing but they're sin because they have been called by the saviour by the risen lord to do something different to do something else they've been called to serve him there's no time here but there's connections here to the story of our poor runaway prophet Jonah there's various connections here again there's no time just now but it's the same story God calls them to do one thing Jonah of course does something else he goes quite literally the opposite way away from the nivah he runs away the disciples are called to be fishers of men instead they go back to being normal fishermen their plans are stopped by God they return to the old ways but we see
[25:55] Jesus doesn't let them get away with that he is there with them he cares for them enough his plan is so perfect that he is willing to meet them verse four we see them recognising Jesus very briefly verses four down to verse eight they've caught nothing you can imagine the feeling on the boat they spend all night fishing they are exhausted exhausted we see that in Peter's dress or his lack of dress they're beyond caring they're tired they've caught nothing they've wasted a night and they're hobbling back to shore slowly drifting back you can imagine just the pain and the misery and just the frustration in that boat we see then in verse four and verse five Jesus standing at the shore he calls out to the boat does he say to them you fools you fools I am here resurrected and I have done all this for you and here you are wasting your time does he tell them how foolish they are fishing for fish when they've been called and commissioned and saved to fish for men does the risen Lord
[27:13] Jesus all his glory and all his power does he remind them as to the sacrifice he's made for them to go and to waste their time what does Jesus say in verse five Jesus say literally he shouts to them he's we have said the verb is shouting he's shouting he's shouting out to the boat and he shouts out to them saying children what have he caught do you have any meat do you have any food literally children do you have any food children what have he caught rather than berating them and reminding them as to their failure he deals with them gently even more than that we see of course this miracle taking place where he tells them to cast the net on the right side of the ship again my knowledge of fishing is as bad as my knowledge of crofting but the commentators tell me reliably that the way this is mentioned it tells them that they would fish the sea of it's still today fished in a clockwise pattern it's the way the currents work and the fish would be caught on the left hand side it's the way it worked it's the way we did it the way the sea formation is there's hardly any fish on the other side if you go the clockwise way so Jesus tells them put a net on the other side these are fishermen who know their stuff they know their stuff exactly and he tells them to do something that's wrong technically it's wrong but they do it they follow this man's instructions
[28:58] Jesus in his mercy he allows them to catch a net full of fish see they've started their day without planning ahead they've started their day without involving their saviour they've gone back to the old way of life and dear Christian dear sister when we make a mess of things and we all have made a mess of things at times haven't we even in service to the Lord we've done things our way thinking that we know best and we've made an absolute mess in that situation does the Lord still use our mess for his glory he can use our mess for his glory we give him praise for that he uses here their waywardness and their rebellion to be honest but he still allows them to catch this immense catch of fish eventually eventually perhaps as we get a bit closer to shore we see in verse 7 that
[30:01] John himself shouts or tells Jesus it tells Peter it's the Lord it's Jesus and poor Peter poor Peter the very one who decides to go fishing in the first place the very one who seems to lose hope first I wish we had time to go into that the wonderful interaction at the end of our chapter between Jesus and Peter go home this evening and read this chapter again for yourselves and study yourselves the glorious interaction where Jesus restores Peter slowly he brings Peter back to service Peter who seems to have lost hope first who says I'm going off fishing I'm off to fish he's the very very first one to what to jump in the water and swim to shore he's lost hope first but also he has recognised or at least responded to being told it's
[31:01] Jesus first too the rest of them then follow him in in the boat they've made a mess of things going fishing they've made a mess of things they've failed Jesus he hasn't even been resurrected even for a few short days perhaps a wee bit longer but they've already in the very start of their lives of service to their Lord they've messed up they've forgotten their calling they've forgotten their duties we see Jesus he stands there calls them children he gives them a catch he takes their mess and he somehow his own sovereign wisdom his own eternal powerful plan he takes a mess and he creates a miracle dear Christian how often is that our story how often is that our story God takes our attempts he takes even our messes at times and he uses them for his glory in his own way and we praise God for that mystery it's a mystery to us how he uses these things but he does we return fishing they catch nothing
[32:20] Jesus then calls out to him in love he carefully reminds them about who he is and that brings us very briefly to our final few verses here from verses 9 downwards verses 9 to 14 Jesus gives the disciples rest the beauty of verse 9 is something which I'll be honest takes me throws me off or takes me off guard every time I read it verse 9 and it's so vivid and John writes so well of course the spirit inspires him verse 9 as soon as we were come to land we saw a fire of coals there and fish laid thereon and bread here we have in the beauty and the power and the glory of our resurrected saviour the one who angels and heavenly creatures are worshipped from the start the one who is co-eternal co-existent the one who is of equal power and glory to the father the one who is worthy of eternity of worship the one who the whole world has made through and made for here he is the risen lord saviour of his people fulfilled the full prophecy fulfilled all that needs to be done as faced on the cross the full wrath of god of all the sins of all his people who rose up triumphant from the grave who has accomplished it all who has done his work on earth who now reigns and rules the right hand of the father and he's made them breakfast he's made them breakfast the beauty of that and the wonder of that should not escape us and there's so much we could say there's so many allusions here so many connections here to various parts of scripture old and new but it's perhaps wise for us as we bring our study to an end and you can dig into these things yourselves in your own time but for us today we despite all the connections of eating and dining of Jesus and all the connections of the Lord providing for his people the truth is here this is Jesus he has made breakfast for some tired fishermen who have gone wrong who have made a bit of a mess of the situation his disciples his beloved people who have quite quickly stopped serving him and started serving themselves instead he is here in his love and his forgiveness he's made these tired fishermen breakfast there's something so eternally glorious in the beautiful simplicity of verse 9 it's a wee fire
[35:24] Jesus has made a wee fire on that fire what do we see there's fish and there's bread the devastating detail here the the devastating detail for the disciples is that Jesus doesn't need their catch as we heard in previous weeks there's a theme here actually that runs through these texts Jesus didn't need that wee boys pack lunch did he to feed the 5 or 10,000 but he used it he used it Jesus doesn't need the disciples catch the catch he himself has given them he doesn't need it he has prepared breakfast for them they've caught nothing they come to shore exhausted and I'm sure starving and there's food for them there is food for them fish and bread cooking away but in verse 10 verse 10 shows us the beauty of our saviour
[36:27] Jesus saith unto them bring off the fish which ye have now caught he adds their fish to his breakfast he doesn't need to he can provide for them quite well himself but out of his love out of his care to help soothe their tired hearts their I'm sure pained souls as they realise what they have done wrong as they realise they've not served their risen saviour well rather than attack them and lay into them and remind them of his glory and so on and so on he asks them to bring him some fish he adds it to the breakfast he's already prepared for them and he cooks their fish in front of him the risen triumphant saviour the eternal lord of whom all heaven and earth belong the one who this very moment is in full control of every star and galaxy every atom every molecule belongs to him as Kuyper says there's not a single area or foot he says where Christ and the whole universe not a single part of the whole universe where Christ doesn't declare mine all things belong to him all things through him all things for him and here he is asking them to bring up some fish so he can cook it for them dear brother dear sister this is the love of our saviour for his people we will mess up you don't need me to tell you that as we read this together your own minds are sure goes to times where you have made a mess of things in your walk in your service to him this year this week you have made a mess of things
[38:17] I have made a mess of things we confess that even at times trying to serve him we still mess it up say things wrong do things wrong get things wrong but here we see brother dear sister you have a saviour you have a saviour for all his glory all his majesty the word tells us he is gentle he is lowly he is gentle he is lowly what else does the word tell us in Isaiah but what a bruised reed a bruised reed what he does not break dear Christian as you struggle and attempt to serve him and as we all fail on that service the answer is not to hide our faces the answer is to come to him again and again and trust that he will use our efforts for his glory we strive of course to serve him well we strive to serve him biblically of course but we will have our faults and our failings until the day we go home to be with him but he will use these things for his good and for his glory verse 13
[39:29] Jesus then cometh and taketh bread and giveth him and fish likewise verse 12 come and dine come and eat sit down and have your food and verse 13 then he feeds them he hands the fish he hands the bread to them again there is avenues and there is lines and whole roads we can go down here but time doesn't permit us but the very very simple reality here is here is a saviour feeding his beloved people dear christian dear brother dear sister if nothing else in our time together the last few weeks remind yourself of this chapter where you've seen the saviour throughout our whole study change people's lives bring the dead back to life give insight give hearing help the lame and so on and so on we've seen all these things be reminded dear christian that you have a saviour who truly cares for you as his people truly cares for you we don't say this to help us get through the week we don't say this because it's a nice thing for us to say we say this because it's a biblical truth we have a saviour who feeds his people who lovingly provides for his people who uses his people's efforts for his glory and for our good dear brother dear sister rest in him rest in his finished work rest in the fact that you have a saviour who knows you who cares for you and who as you strive to serve him will take your strivings will use what you have will use how he made you will use what he's given you and will use that to glorify himself there's no time here there's no time at all but we see that even in the final few words here that when Jesus says something to the disciples that when Jesus tells John when Peter asks Jesus about John what about John what about his disciples what about his future in verse 21 verse 22
[41:44] Jesus says to him or verse 21 Peter says to Jesus Peter seeing him that saved Jesus Lord and what shall this man do straight away Peter's been restored Peter has been forgiven he's been reminded in these verses that Jesus still cares for him he still holds him and the first thing Peter does is he starts asking questions he shouldn't be asking he finds himself right back again making a mess a couple of things dear brother dear sister your saviour knows you your saviour knows his people he loves his people he will keep his people let yourself as aware come and rest with him the one who feeds his people even going forward in the next few weeks I know we have God willing communion time coming up in this congregation as you approach these days remind yourself here you have the evidence he feeds his people he dines alongside his people he gives off himself for his people
