[30:30] Let us turn in our Bibles to the chapter of God's Word which we read. The Gospel of John chapter 17.
[30:45] Let us read again and look at verse 15. The Gospel of John chapter 17, verse 15.
[30:57] Let us reconcile these words with the words of verse 24.
[31:32] Verse 24 says, Father, I will that they also whom thou hast given me be with me where I am.
[31:45] Our text has Christ praying that he should not take his people out of the world. In verse 24, you have Christ praying that they would be taken out of the world to heaven to behold his glory.
[32:08] How do you reconcile them both together? Answer? Answer? He's praying, do not take them out of the world immediately. Do not take them out of the world instantly they're converted.
[32:24] Don't take them out of the world. Don't take them out of the world before I sanctify them and teach them how to resist evil. Newly converted Christians quite often ask the question, Why does God not take us instantly to heaven on our conversion?
[32:50] Because if that happened, we would not then sin again? It's an legitimate question. If God hates sin so much, why doesn't he immediately take us to heaven whenever we're converted?
[33:08] And that way, we'd never sin again. Answer? Answer? Christianity is not escapism from the world.
[33:25] Christianity is the conquering of the world. Christianity is the overcoming of the world, not opting out of the world.
[33:38] Now, let's answer the question. What would take... What would the... If we were taken instantly out of the world on our conversion, the main reason for God creating human beings and placing them on planet earth would never be accomplished.
[34:03] God created man in the image of God. God created man in the image of God. So that man, human beings on earth would glorify him. God created man in the image of God. God created man in the image of God. God created man in the image of God. God created man in the image of God.
[34:16] God created man in the image of God. God created man in the image of God.
[34:27] God created man in the image of God. So that man, human beings on earth would glorify God on earth. God created man in the image of God.
[34:41] You will note, you will remember, when God after every day of creation, God made a statement. He said, that's good.
[34:52] That's good. That's good. That's good. Until the sixth day. What did he say when he created man?
[35:05] He changed it. He tweaked it. And said, that's very good. That's very good now. Now there are people on earth reflecting the image of God.
[35:23] That's what he wanted. That's what he planned. That, as it were, is what he started to do. Wherever Satan the devil was, when he saw human beings walking about earth reflecting the image of God, he hated it.
[35:48] And he said, I'll change that. Hasn't he been successful? To a point. To a point only.
[36:00] He said, I'll get them to ape me instead of looking at the enemy. Instead of them looking like the enemy.
[36:11] And you know the rest of the story. The human race fell through the temptation of Satan.
[36:22] And defaced the image of God on earth. There's no verse in the Bible which says, God predestined us to heaven.
[36:39] I'm not speaking heresy. What the Bible says about predestination is, he predestined us to be conformed to the image of Christ.
[36:55] The first stepping stone in man being conformed to the image of Christ is their conversion.
[37:07] Is them being saved. But that's only the stepping stone. It's only the first stepping stone, as it were. Christ died. Christ died. And Christ rose again out of the grave.
[37:21] To accomplish God's purpose of recreating man in the image of God on earth.
[37:33] Christ died. Once Satan defaced, succeeded in human beings defacing the image of God on them. God ordained that he would recreate the human race in the image of God again.
[37:54] God ordained that he would recreate the human race. Taking Christians out of the world, immediately the converted, implies God could not do it.
[38:08] God was unable to recreate. When God created man, all he had to do was what?
[38:19] You know? Speak. That's all he had to do. But when he had to recreate man in the image of God, there's more to do than just speak it.
[38:34] There has to be an atonement. There has to be payment for the sin. For he had sworn irrevocably, the soul that sins must die.
[38:47] Sin must be paid for in blood. To put the picture another way, if Christians are immediately ransomed to heaven on their conversion, Satan's design to thwart, to obstruct God's purpose of recreating man in the image of God, Satan would be able to successfully abstract God's plan.
[39:22] Are you happy with that? Are you happy with the idea that Satan has more power than God? Are you happy with the idea that whatever God desires to do, Satan can put a spoke in the wheel?
[39:38] Satan can throw a spanner in the works. That's the situation we're asking when we say, why aren't we taken instantly to heaven?
[39:49] You see, we must always remember, we're very small-minded. And even when it comes to religion, we tend to think we are at the centre of it.
[40:01] We tend to think, well as long as I am saved, what else matters? Tell me, who's at the centre of that ideology? Me.
[40:12] Us. Ourselves. Listen. Religion's about God. It's not really about us. It's not really about us. And the spiritual warfare is not really between Satan and us.
[40:28] Who are we? Satan can just... Satan's more powerful than us. The holy warfare is not between Satan and us.
[40:40] The holy warfare is between Satan and God. And Satan wants you and he wants me to be on his side against God.
[40:54] It's a much, much bigger picture. There's heavenly realms. There's satanic realms. And we have to join one side or the other.
[41:07] Whose side are you on? People ask, is God on your side? Hey, wrong question. The question is, are you on God's side?
[41:20] Are you? Are you here unconverted? You're not a Christian. Are you on God's side against Satan? That's the question.
[41:31] Now, God allows Satan to do some part only of his work.
[41:43] Why? Why does God allow some evil to exist? Let me tell you. There are a lot of evil in the world.
[41:55] But not half as much as Satan designs and desires and tries to accomplish. He's only allowed to accomplish so much. How awful it is.
[42:06] It's terrible. But he's only allowed to accomplish so much. Why? Why does God allow any of it to be accomplished? Only, only because he can overturn it for good.
[42:23] It's very helpful to grasp. Good and evil are not equals. They are direct opposites.
[42:37] But they are not equal. Good excels evil as far as light excels darkness. Have you read that in scripture?
[42:52] God is more powerful than evil. And he's got Satan on. He's hooked him if you think of fishing. He's got him on the line. But he's letting them play around.
[43:04] And all he's doing is tying him out. Now, let's put it another way.
[43:16] If Christians were instantly taken to heaven on their conversion, grace would never be seen as more powerful than evil.
[43:33] It would not be realized that grace can overcome evil. Now, grace strengthens the Christian to resist sin and Satan.
[43:49] Grace actually doesn't affect sin at all. Sin in the Christian is just as evil as sin in the non-Christian.
[44:01] The grace of God prevents Christians from entering into evil.
[44:13] We are to resist evil. We are to resist sin. As verse our text tells us. I pray not that thou shouldst take them out of the world, but thou shouldst keep them from the evil.
[44:29] You can't cope with evil. You can't overcome evil. I can't overcome evil. Christians can't overcome evil. Christ overcomes evil. Christ overcomes evil.
[44:41] God overcomes evil. The Spirit overcomes evil. Paul tells the Thessalonians, The Lord is faithful who shall establish you and keep you from evil.
[45:02] You see, we are, the Savior taught us, lead us not into temptation.
[45:13] If you enter temptation, you'll lose. You mustn't enter it. You must keep from evil.
[45:24] You must keep from sin. You must never take sin on and say, I'll defeat you. No, no.
[45:35] Keep away from it. Keep us from evil. We are taught to lead us not into temptation. Grace enables us to hate sin. It teaches us to avoid sin.
[45:48] To avoid sinful places, sinful people, sinful occasions by abiding in Christ. A Christian hasn't got the power, but he's got the Holy Spirit within him.
[46:04] But he grieves that Holy Spirit's power from working when he plays about with temptation. When he trifles with sin. We're to keep our distance from it.
[46:18] We've got to understand this. There is nothing more God glorifying on earth. Nothing more Christ exalting on earth than human beings resisting temptation.
[46:40] We must not enter temptation. Keep away from it. Avoid it. Long keep as far away as possible.
[46:51] That's God glorifying. That's far more God glorifying than if we were whisked off to heaven in our conversion.
[47:03] Do you remember what Satan hates is to see human beings walking righteously.
[47:15] Walking righteously. Do you remember we've got one of the biggest, the most pictures, one of the greatest pictures of Satan is in Job chapter 1.
[47:29] And do you remember when the people of God came together? When the sons of God gathered together? Satan came along with them.
[47:41] Note. He comes along with the people of God when they gather together. And God said to Satan, Where are you going?
[47:53] Walking up and down on the earth. It's mine, isn't it? It's not actually, but he's possessing it. Have you noticed my servant Job?
[48:04] God upright. God upright. Walking righteously. Have you noticed him sitting? Sure he did. And he hated it.
[48:16] And he said, just give me, just give me some scope. Just let me get my hands in them. And I'll stop him worshipping you. There's nothing Satan hates more.
[48:28] There's nothing more God glorifying than a Christian resisting temptation. Walking righteously.
[48:42] Enoch walked with God. And as someone said, he walked straight into heaven.
[48:53] Walking with God. That is God for Christians to behave Christianly.
[49:07] There's nothing more God glorifying on earth. Nothing more Christ exalting. The second madam.
[49:18] The second Adam. He was successful. The first Adam failed miserably to take us to heaven. But the second Adam. Do you remember?
[49:31] I can't remember if I've mentioned it here before. Where is it? Is it Matthew 4? No, Luke 4. Is it not Matthew 4? Luke 4.
[49:43] Luke 4. Luke 4. Luke 4. Luke 4. Luke 4. Luke 4. Verse 1. Yes. Jesus, being full of the Holy Ghost, returned from it, and he was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.
[50:07] have you got that Christ was led into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil what's the Holy Spirit doing leading Christ into temptation isn't that a contradiction no no no no no there's no contradictions in the Bible there are apparent contradictions there's no contradictions what's the Spirit doing leading Christ to be tempted by the devil you see Christ is the second Adam the first Adam led us into temptation Satan deceived Adam and you and I are in Adam we're in Adam and we fell in him and with him so God said
[51:10] I'll send a second Adam I'll recreate you in the second Adam my son the Lord Jesus Christ but then you see he has to be tempted like Adam was tempted you can hear Satan in the background can you ha is the second Adam any better than the first the first let the human race down just let me tempt the second Adam and he led him into the wilderness to be tempted forty days and forty nights but he failed miserably Christ resisted the devil on your behalf and my behalf if we're Christian only if we're Christian only if we believe Christ the second Adam you have to be in Christ and that's why the most common term in the Bible to describe a Christian is not a Christian
[52:19] I think I've mentioned before the word Christian is only in the Bible three times the biblical term for a convert is in Christ being in Christ now do you think it's easy to believe in forgiveness to believe in Christ do you think it's easy if you believe Christ is the only saviour of sinners because he died on the cross to pay God for the sins of all that will be in heaven if you believe that I tell you that's not natural that's the power of the Holy Spirit a few weeks ago a minister said to me from Inverness and he said to me do you remember so and so oh I said yeah I remember when we were apprentices he says well he phoned me the other day and he said
[53:29] I've only a short time to live can I can I speak to you oh he said yeah yeah certainly let's go he said come and see me he said I'll come and see you and he said no no let's speak I'll tell you now and he said to him what do you he asked him what he was afraid of and what have you but he explained the gospel in as simple terms as he could confess your sin be sorry you've kept God out of your life till now repent of that and believe Christ died for our sins according to the scripture just believe in that and your sins are forgiven do you know what the poor man said oh he said that's rubbish I don't believe that nonsense away you go and don't bother coming to see me do you think it's easy to believe in Christ you need the Holy Spirit and if you believe
[54:39] Christ is the Savior that's the Holy Spirit that's made you maybe you've heard a fantastic sermon once and you said well everybody will be saved were they were they it's the work of God there's nothing more God glorifying than someone believing Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures a man walking about earth believing that I tell you Satan hates it and grace the grace of God and the power of grace has to be seen to be more powerful than evil and sin God is more honoured by these things than if Christians were whisked off immediately to heaven you see it's all about
[55:43] God's glory Christianity is all about God's glory yes it's about our salvation that God is glorified through our salvation faith in the gospel of Christ on earth is a power that conquers Satan and it's the only power in the universe that can conquer Satan's design and Satan's purpose and there's more glory to God more glory to Christ through our repentance and faith in the gospel than if we kept the whole law of God perfectly all our life that's amazing that's amazing Christ can offer and did offer the gospel to the thief on the next cross what good what good could that thief do in building up the kingdom of Christ his hands never did a thing to glorify
[57:03] Christ his he never the dying thief who's in glory never walked on this earth with his feet but he's in glory he said Lord remember me remember me when you come into your kingdom that's God glorifying it doesn't matter how bad you've been it doesn't matter how old you've been it doesn't matter how wicked you are believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you'll be saved now verse 24 as we close just says I will that they also whom thou hast given me be with me where I am why that they may behold my glory which thou hast given me which thou hast given me you'll read
[58:04] John 17 get out how many times he says those whom thou hast given me I think it's six times those whom thou hast given me what's Christ's glory a sanctified church that's his glory and he says I want them to see me Christ is wanting Christians to see what empowered him what enabled him to endure the horrors of Calvary see Hebrews 12 2 says who speaking about Christ who for the joy for the joy that was set before him endured the cross what was that joy what made him put up with the agony was the joy he was looking forward to what was it precisely we're told it's his glory what's the glory the sanctified church
[59:14] Ephesians 5 27 that he might present her the church to himself a glorious church without spot or wrinkle or any such thing Jude the one chapter in Jude verse 24 says his joy is to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy Jude verse 24 can you imagine I can't get my head around it it gives Christ joy it kept Christ enduring the agony of Calvary to think of him presenting you and me who depend on Christ for heaven with exceeding joy he's looking forward and from
[60:17] Ephesian passage I think you can get it he's he's before an assembled universe not just the human race at the greatest eyes not just the human race angels demons devils they'll be assembled there and here's his pride and joy he is as it were saying to the demons look at the job I made of these Christians not a spot not a wrinkle I did that and they walked on earth in my fellowship in my communion looking to me speaking of me thinking of me loving me following me it gives Christ exceeding joy it made him endure Calvary to think of that great day when he'll present every Christian faultless before the throne our last word if that joy kept
