[0:00] ok oh uh my Was but Good morning. Welcome to God's house.
[0:39] And once again we trust that it will be God's voice. That we hear God's face that we see and God's blessing that we will know.
[0:49] Now there is an intimation to make. The annual AGM of the congregation will be held in the church on Monday 3rd October 2022 at 7.30pm.
[1:11] A good attendance is requested and copies of the financial statement for 21-22 will be available at the door. So click that on your way out.
[1:24] And I'll go to the back door then, to the front door myself as well. Following the AGM there will be a meeting of the Vacancy Committee, the Deacons Court and the Kirk Session.
[1:38] And the interim moderator, Rev Ian Thompson, will preside at both meetings. Well let's begin our service of worship by singing to God's praise from the Scottish Psalter.
[1:52] Psalm 147 and we sing verses marked 1 to 5. Psalm 147 in the Scottish Psalter, verses 1 to 5.
[2:04] Praise ye the Lord, for it is good. Praise to our God to sing, for it is pleasant. And to praise, it is a comely thing.
[2:16] I will go down to verse 4. He counts the number of the stars. He names them every one. Great is our Lord. And of great power, His wisdom, search can none.
[2:31] Psalm 147, verses 1 to 5. Praise ye the Lord, for it is good.
[2:48] It is good, our God who sing. For it is good.
[3:12] The tienen NathanielapSA, verses 1 to 5. Thank you.
[3:46] Thank you.
[4:16] Thank you. Thank you.
[4:48] Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. Let's bow our heads in prayer.
[5:00] The one who is ultimate.
[5:42] The one that heals the broken hearted. Who names the very stars. And who knows them every one.
[5:53] The one who is ultimate. All power. All power resides with you. We come and we worship you gracious father.
[6:07] For you are worthy to be worshipped. You are great. You are high. You are full of majesty. You've had no beginning. And no end.
[6:20] Oh Lord you are worthy to be praised. For who you are. But how much more. It is our duty to praise you.
[6:31] Because of what you have done. When we. This human race. Brought. Sin. Into the universe. And caused that.
[6:44] Disjunction. That pervades the universe. When we. Brought the curse. Into the universe.
[6:55] Oh heavenly father. We thank you. For your grace. And your mercy. That you did not instantly. Cast us to a lost eternity.
[7:08] The whole human race. But what we find written in your word. Is that you so love the world. That you gave your dearly beloved son.
[7:20] So that anyone at all. Who believes upon him. Can receive instant forgiveness. A title to eternal life.
[7:32] And be renewed in character. Oh Lord we thank you. For the grace. For the love. And the power. Of the gospel.
[7:44] And we thank you. That the gospel is. Christ died. For our sins. According to the scriptures. We thank you heavenly father.
[7:57] That you have given us. An infallible. Revelation. From heaven. We do not need to rely.
[8:08] Upon our wisdom. We must not rely. Upon our feelings. We cannot trust. Any other. Human being.
[8:19] Oh we thank you. We have this. Infallible. Truth. Which you have given. To us. May we adore it.
[8:30] May we love it. May we follow it. May we. Rejoice. In it. Oh Lord. It does not come. To us naturally.
[8:41] To rejoice. In God. So give us this. Grace. Give us this. Spirit. Of rejoicing. In you. We come.
[8:53] Heavenly father. And ask. That you would have. Mercy on us. As. You're. A church. Your church. Your people. A congregation.
[9:03] Of your church. Oh Lord. Continue. Your mercy. Your kindness. Towards us. Bless. This. Congregation.
[9:14] Remember them. Each one. According. To their needs. Lead. And guide them. As they. Seek. To go forward. Be with your church.
[9:26] Everywhere. And we do. Thank you. For so many. Faithful. Denominations. On this island. Bless. And prosper. Each one.
[9:37] Be with everyone. Who stands. In a pulpit. This day. And preaches. Against sin. And preaches. Christ. Crucified. As the only.
[9:48] Remedy. Lord. We ask. That you bless. And prosper. Your church. In these days. Of. Blasphemy.
[9:59] And rebuke. Our father. In heaven. We ask. That you. Have mercy. On our nation. On our land. At this time.
[10:10] We pray. For our. New. King. We pray. For our. New. Prime. Minister. We ask. That you.
[10:21] Bestow. Grace. Mercy. Wisdom. Peace. And love. Upon them. That they. Rule us.
[10:31] In your fear. That they. Legislate. So that. Your church. Your people. Can freely.
[10:44] Proclaim. The gospel. We pray. For the protection. Above all things. Of. Free speech. Free speech. To preach.
[10:55] The gospel. The gospel. The full. Free. Free. And. Fettered. Gospel. That whoever. Believes. On the Lord. Jesus Christ. Will definitely.
[11:06] Be saved. Give us. Legislation. We pray. So that we can. Freely. Proclaim. What your word. States. This.
[11:17] Divine. Heavenly. Gracious. Message. From heaven. May we be able. To declare it. Freely. However unpopular.
[11:28] However distasteful. To fallen. Human nature. Give us freedom. To proclaim it. Heavenly Father. War. We pray Lord.
[11:39] For the nations. That know. Warfare. We can't. But think of. Ukraine. But we realize. Realize. There is.
[11:51] Oppression. There is. Effectively. Warfare. In many. Other. Places. We think of. Afghanistan. We think of. Yemen.
[12:02] We think of. Iran. We think of. North Korea. We think of. Syria. The situation. In so many. Of these. Places. Oh Lord. Look down. From heaven.
[12:13] And grant. Mercy. We pray thee. Hasten the day. When wars. Will cease. We ask.
[12:23] Heavenly Father. That you remember. The children. Of. Sorrow. Bless. Bereavement. Wherever. It is known. Remember.
[12:36] Those who are. Seriously ill. Bless. Bless. Medication. Treatment. Therapies. Etc. For all. Where it is available.
[12:49] And be pleased. To remember. And heal. Those. For whom. There is no. Human. Remedy. If such be. To your glory. And for their.
[13:00] Good. God. Oh gracious. Father. We pray. That you. Remember. Our young people. Growing up. In an age.
[13:11] Of license. Lord. Meet with them. Bless them. Be with them. And now. Lord. As we turn. To your word. And your truth. Speak.
[13:23] You speak. From heaven. You. Graciously. Bless. Your word. You. Feed.
[13:34] Hungry. Souls. You. Restore. Strain. Sheep. You. Convict. The careless.
[13:45] You. Turn. As all. To follow you. Now. Hear. In mercy. Now. Answer. In peace. Now. Remember. What we.
[13:55] Forgotten. To pray for. Keep us. In your love. Keep us. In your fear. For all. We pray. We pray. In Christ's name.
[14:07] For your glory. Amen. Boys and girls. Story today.
[14:18] Is of a. Poor. Man. That. That. Had. Very. Little. Food. To eat. He couldn't. He couldn't. Make a nice meal. For himself. And he all.
[14:28] All he had. For his food. Was oatmeal. And he had oatmeal. For breakfast. For lunch. And for dinner. At night. But he thought. He'd save up.
[14:39] Every penny. And. Buy himself. A nice chunk. Of meat. It was getting near. Christmas time. So he thought. He'd buy that. And he saved it up. And he went along.
[14:50] To the butchers. And the butchers. Felt sorry for him. And he gave him. A lovely chunk of meat. So off he went. He put it in a bag. And off he went. Home with it. But as he was carrying it home.
[15:01] He noticed. His book lace. Was loose. And he was frightened. He'd stand it. So he put his bag. With the meat down. And the pavement. And he bent down. And he tied.
[15:11] The shoe. Of his lace. But as he was tying. The laces of his shoe. A dog came along. And stole away.
[15:23] The nice chunk of meat. The butcher gave him. He was so upset. He lost the meat. He spent so long. Saving up for.
[15:33] But he was a Christian. And he remembered. There's a verse in the Bible. And it says. All things. Work together.
[15:45] For good. To those. Who love. God. All things. And he said to God. Lord. How. Can this.
[15:55] Work. For good. I took a long time. Saving up for this. And a dog. Has stolen away. How. Can that. Be good. For me.
[16:07] Well. Off he went to bed. And he got up in the morning. But he wasn't long up in the morning. And the dog. Knock came to the door. So he went to the door. And he opened the door. And who was this?
[16:18] But the butcher. That gave him the meat. And the butcher said. How are you John? How are you? How are you feeling? Oh. He says. I'm feeling.
[16:28] I'm not. I'm not. But you look terrible. Oh. He says. I'm on the way to the hospital. He says. How are you though? He says. I'm okay. He says. Did you eat the meat I gave you?
[16:39] No. He says. I was leaving it for tonight. Oh. He says. What am I. See that meat I gave you? It was poisoned. And I took some of it myself.
[16:49] And I have to go to the hospital. And I'm going round everybody else I gave the meat to. Because they're poisoned as well. God was good to you John. God was very good to you when he made that dog steal that meat.
[17:05] God was very good. But you know. The poor man John would never have known that if the butcher didn't call. The Bible is true.
[17:19] Even when we don't think it is. Even when we don't understand. If the Bible says all things. And it means all things eventually.
[17:31] Finally. Will work for good. It's true. It's real. So next time something bad happens to you. You remember that verse.
[17:43] And you pray to God. And say. Lord. Show me. How this works. For good. Okay. Very good then.
[17:54] Well let's. Sing to God's praise. Once again. This time. We'll sing. Again. We'll sing in this God's shelter. Psalm 87. Psalm 87.
[18:07] In the Scottish shelter. Upon the hills of holiness. He his foundation sets. God. More than Jacob's dwellings all.
[18:20] Delights. In science gates. And we go down to the last verse in the psalm. When God the people writes. He'll count. He'll count that this man born was there.
[18:31] There be that sing and play. And all my well springs in the ark. Psalm 87. To God's praise. The earth. Here we go. And we go down to the ark.
[18:42] He sang the earth. He'sάed on the hills of holiness. He gets the rich of sense The poor man Jacob's wedding song He lies inside his face He's glorious house, heir of thee The city of the Lord Reign upon people by you Those that know he will be born Be your deep-tided son within
[19:50] The land of Palestine And likewise with the Ophelia This man was for their own And give your Zion Shall we say This man, the black man there Was for an he that his old sky Then shall shall shall shall return When God let people rise in
[20:51] Now that this man born was there Let me, God, sing A clear and o'er My well-springs in the air Let's turn in our Bibles To the Gospel of John Chapter 16 Gospel of John Chapter 16 And we'll read the first 15 verses
[21:54] John 16 John 16 John 16 At the beginning These things have I spoken unto you That you should not be offended This shall put you out of the synagogues Yea, the time cometh That whatsoever killeth you Whosoever killeth you Will think that he doeth God service And these things will they do unto you Because they have not known the Father Nor me But these things have I told you That when the time shall come You may remember that I told you of them And these things I said not unto you At the beginning Because I was with you But now I go my way
[22:58] To him that sent me And none of you asks me Whither goest thou? But because I have said these things unto you Sorrow has filled your heart Nevertheless I tell you the truth It is expedient for you That I go away For if I go not away The Comforter will not come unto you But if I depart I will send him unto you And when he is come He will reprove the world of sin And of righteousness And of judgment Of sin Because they believe not on me Of righteousness Because I go to my Father And ye see me no more Of judgment
[23:59] Because the Prince Of this world Is judged I have yet many things To say unto you But you cannot bear them Now How be it When he The Spirit of truth Is come He will guide you Into all truth For he shall not speak Of himself But whatsoever He shall hear That shall he speak And he Will show you Things to come He shall glorify me For he shall receive of mine And shall show it unto you All things That the Father hath Are mine Therefore Said I That ye shall take of mine And shall show it Unto you
[25:00] And may God Bless to us That reading Of his own Word Now let's sing Once more to God's praise This time from Psalm 89 Psalm 89 We sing verses One Two Four Four stanzas Psalm 89 In the Scottish Psalter The first four verses God's God's mercies I will ever Sing And with my mouth I shall thy faithfulness Make to be known To generations all And we go down to verse four That I thy seed Establish shall Forever to remain And will to generations all Thy throne Build and maintain Psalm 89 Verses marked One To four
[26:01] God's Message I will Ever Sing And with My Love Thy Shall Thy Revolve God's Be To be loved to generation so.
[26:34] For mercy shall be accepted. All ever to endure.
[26:48] Thy faithfulness in the heavens. Thou wilt establish you.
[27:05] I with my chosen one amin. I come and wish us thee.
[27:20] Unto my seven. Whom I love. You gave us for now.
[27:35] That guide thy sin. He is accomplished. For ever to remain.
[27:52] I will do. To channel. It's from so. Thy hope will come.
[28:07] Thy hope will come. Thy hope will come. Let's turn in our Bibles then to the passage of Scripture which we read in the Gospel of John Chapter 16.
[28:31] and as God would help me I would like to concentrate on verses 7 to 11. The Gospel of John chapter 16 verses 7 to 11.
[28:49] Nevertheless I tell you the truth it is expedient for you that I go away.
[29:01] For if I go not away the Comforter will not come unto you. But if I depart I will send him unto you.
[29:14] And when he is come he will reprove the world of sin and of righteousness and of judgment.
[29:26] Of sin because they believe not on me. Of righteousness because I go to my Father and you see me no more. Of judgment because the Prince of this world is judged.
[29:41] This is Christ's last private talk with his disciples before his crucifixion.
[29:56] And the disciples are very, very disturbed. They cannot conceive of coping with life without Jesus being beside them.
[30:12] They are terribly dependent on Christ's body being beside them. And here he tells them I am going away.
[30:24] And they cannot cope. But he reassures them again in verse 7 it is to your advantage that I go away.
[30:36] Verse 7 Nevertheless I tell you I assure you it is expedient for you it is to your advantage it will be good for you that I will go away because I will replace myself with the Holy Spirit.
[30:56] He is called the Comforter. He is called the Helper. His little word is Parousia. And he says look it is to your advantage that I will go away and I will send the Holy Spirit my place.
[31:12] But they were saying how is that so? How is it to our advantage that you will no longer be with us? We can see you we can touch you we can sit beside you and ask questions how is it to our advantage that you go away and you send the Holy Spirit who is invisible who doesn't have a body how will it be to our advantage?
[31:42] And he tells them in verse 8 when he the Spirit of Truth will come he will reprove the world of sin of righteousness and of judgment.
[31:56] That is how it will be to the advantage of the church. The word reprove really means convicting convincing when he comes he will thoroughly convince people of three things of sin of righteousness and of judgment.
[32:26] Now there is a lesson there for you and me today because we today are living in a time of history we are living in a culture today where you are not supposed to have convictions only opinions only impressions only ideas only what you happen to believe but when the Spirit of Truth when the Holy Spirit comes he will convict he will convince people of sin of righteousness and of judgment so as God would help us let's look at these three things when the Spirit comes he will convict of sin sin is much more than a mistake sin is much more than an error of judgment sin is a very serious evil but here's here's a good aspect of that situation being convicted of sin just call your wrong behaviour sin just call it sin and all can be forgiven that's a wonderful thing you look at politicians you look at celebrities bending over backwards to deny they've sinned and they call it a mistake an error of judgment or as
[34:22] Hillary Clinton once said trying to defend her lies oh I misspoke bending over backwards not to call it sin but remember if it's sin you've committed it can be forgiven that's the wonderful news we we have all sinned but it can be forgiven so be willing to call your wrong behaviour sin and Christ can forgive you when the spirit comes he'll convict you of sin evil however our text or at least verse 9 points out to us that there is a specific sin in mind here the spirit convicts of a specific sin verse 9 of sin because they've done this they've done that they've done the next thing what does verse 9 say he'll convict of sin because they believe not on me when the spirit comes he will convict of unbelief you're greatest and if you're here and you're not a
[36:07] Christian maybe you're saying well I can't be a Christian because I've got a problem my friend your problem is not drink drugs sex gambling it's not your foul mouth your real sin is unbelief unbelief is a root sin leading to all other sins the reason you've got a problem is because you don't believe in Christ it's a root sin and it's an ultimate sin it's as someone else said the crowning sin in the last analysis there'll only be one question asked in the great day of judgment did you hear that
[37:09] Jesus Christ could forgive sin did you believe it's an ultimate sin it's a sin that will destroy us is a root sin and is an ultimate sin what is it precisely unbelief is something we have not done if I was to ask you write out a list of all your sins and begin with your greatest sin begin at the top with what you consider to be the greatest thing that one thing you wish you'd never done am I right that list contains what you've done that was wrong am I right unbelief is something you have not done we tend to think sins of commission are the extremely serious ones
[38:27] God's ways God's standards are far higher than ours and sins of omission before God are more serious than sins of commission what you've not done you've not repented of the wrong you've done and you've not believed that Christ can forgive you instantly him what's the greatest sin unbelief it's it's frightening to think that to hear that Christ Jesus came into the world to forgive sinners and to take unworthy people to heaven to hear that and to say it's not my thing religion is not my thing
[39:34] I'm not into religion that is a more serious sin than being a homosexual a child rapist a mass murderer isn't that what our Bible's teaching when he the spirit of truth will come he'll convict of sin because you've not believed on me now listen only the Holy Spirit can convict you of unbelief do you believe that do you believe your Bible do you believe the text this morning when he the spirit of truth will come he will convict the world of sin because they believe not on me sort that out that's the one thing you have to deal with if you're not a
[40:46] Christian your unbelief believe it's difficult for us to get our head round it but that is the crowning sin it's a root sin and it's an ultimate sin and the last analysis is the one sin that will condemn us and send us to a lost eternity because everything you've ever done can be forgiven if you believe but you must believe that Christ is able when Christ died on that center cross at Calvary he was paying God for the sins of all and everyone who will believe upon him he will convict the world of sin and he'll convict the world secondly of righteousness verse 10 of righteousness because
[41:54] I go to my father and really what he's saying there because I go to the father because after I'm crucified I will rise from the grave by my own power the power of the Holy Spirit you see the Holy Spirit is Christ's Holy Spirit it's the Father's Holy Spirit it's Christ's Holy Spirit he proceeds from them both the fact that I will return to heaven having finished the work that the father gave me to do that's the proof that's the evidence I lived a righteous life you see up till then you could be forgiven for thinking it's impossible for human flesh and blood to live perfectly in this world we would come we could come to the conclusion look being a human being just basically means you can't keep every commandment of God perfectly in thought word and deed but now you have
[43:18] Christ walking on this earth for what 33 years approximately a man of sorrows acquainted with grief but holy harmless undefiled quite separate distinct from sinners flesh and blood your flesh and blood my flesh and blood same thing you see humanity flesh and blood is not the problem corrupted humanity the problem corrupted flesh and blood the problem but Christ was incorruptible Christ never sinned once no matter how hard they tried and did they try hard at that mock trial before his crucifixion they tried to arrange to orchestrate two false witnesses but even then they couldn't get their agreement they couldn't find a charge against them legally holy harmless undefiled righteous now righteous flesh and blood has walked this earth but some didn't believe but when the spirit comes he'll convict
[44:55] Christ Christ is righteous holy harmless undefiled separate from sinners his death at the cross was so much more meaningful than the death of the other two who died for their sins because of their sins Christ died as a substitute for the sins of those who will be in heaven with him through believing the holy spirit convicts of righteousness it convicts of Christ's righteousness it convicts that every single word which Christ uttered was true was from heaven was blessed there's three things in particular that it's important to believe with regard to righteousness one when the spirit comes he'll convict sinners of the need to be righteous before God yes
[46:19] God is holy yes God forgives but God is also holy yes God is love yes God forgives but God is also holy and he cannot stand sin he cannot even look upon it but we have to be righteous before God he requires righteousness God demands righteousness he made man upright he made us righteous but we blew it first of all in Adam and then we aped Adam then we added our own personal sins to the original sin which Adam brought us into God requires righteousness understand that first of all he demands it because he's holy he's righteous he's a righteous
[47:36] God and he requires righteousness from those creatures whom he created righteous that's the first thing the spirit convicts us regarding righteousness second thing the holy spirit convicts us regarding righteousness is that our righteousness are as filthy rags do you believe that do you think you're good enough God is an absolute God and therefore he requires absolute perfection it's a solemn thought think about it it's not enough to be as good as you can be you say look
[48:36] I can't be any better I can't I can't be any better that's not enough it has to be absolute perfection in every detail I I can't remember I can't remember the verse it says whoever keeps the whole law of God and yet offending one point keep keep the whole law of God perfectly except one point of one law once and the whole system falls down because God is an absolute God requiring absolute perfection perfection and am as I write it's too late it's too late for us supposing we live absolutely perfect lives from now on it's too late we've done it we've failed
[49:49] God requires absolute perfection in thought in word and in action always we've failed we can't do it it's too late God requires it thankfully there's a third thing that the spirit convicts us of he convicts us of the requirement of righteousness he convicts us that our personal righteousness is a filthy rags one wrong thought the whole thing falls down but when the spirit comes he'll convict us not just of the requirement of righteousness not just the failure of our own personal righteousness it will convict us of the provision of righteousness in
[50:58] Christ he convicts us and shows us we can't do it we can't make it we're not good enough but it also convicts us Christ absolutely perfect sinless for you you see think think about it Christ was absolutely perfect absolutely righteous in heaven but that wasn't enough that righteousness that perfect righteousness which Christ had in heaven was non transferable but see when Christ came to earth and that's the point being made here of righteousness because
[52:01] I go to my father as having finished a righteousness on earth that could legitimately be transferred to human beings who aren't good enough have you got it that's the gospel that's the gospel if your righteousness is your own you're lost forever if your righteousness however bad you've been however bad you've been if your righteousness is Christ's you're in heaven you're as safe as you'll ever be Christ provides righteousness in the gospel but people say I don't believe it and you know it's it's very subtle you think you're holy when you say oh I'm too bad to be saved
[53:01] I'm not good enough well we know that nothing new about that but Christ died for sinners who aren't good enough to give them the righteousness he worked out on earth I probably used the illustration before but you see Christ's death on the cross if we think of our sinnership our sinfulness before God as a balance sheet we're in the negative because we've sinned we've broken his law Christ's death brings our account with God up to the all square level but it's not enough to be all square with God we've to have righteousness and that's where Christ's perfect life he lived can be transferred to us so that our account with
[54:07] God is now righteous his death paid for our debts we owe by sin his life was worked out on earth a transferable righteousness that can be given to any who ask for it when he the spirit of truth will come he'll convict the world of righteousness his righteousness it can be given to you if you believe but you must believe you must trust but then thirdly when he the spirit of truth will come he'll also convict of judgment because the prince of this world is judged in chapter 12 John said now is the judgment of this world now the ruler of this world will be cast out it's essentially there's a day of judgment there's a day of judgment we find ourselves saying often don't we there's no justice in this world and that's right there's no justice in this world but I'll tell you what there's justice there's justice in the next and the prince of this world
[55:47] Satan the devil is judged now that word judged here can be interpreted in the authorised version in different ways it can mean separated sent off to a lost eternity the ruler of this world is cast out at Calvary at Calvary always remember Satan lost the battle he did not win but he can't stop being evil he couldn't stop killing Jesus as it were but in killing Jesus he destroyed himself that is now you say Satan's still alive yes of course he is but in the Bible destruction I don't think it ever means in any place
[56:48] I think it's in every place destruction means it doesn't mean go out of existence I mean even the scientists will tell you there's no such thing as extinction you throw something in the fire you only change its nature it turns to gas to smoke you only change its form you don't put it out of existence completely but when he the spirit of truth will come he will convict you of certain things concerning the ruler of this world concerning Satan he'll convict you that he is the ultimate evil the ultimate wickedness the spirit of truth will convict you that Satan is active now in this world the spirit of truth will convict you that
[57:59] Satan is the arch deceiver of souls the arch deceiver of souls and he'll convict you that Satan is destroyed that is destroyed as to his purpose as to his success as to his intention of getting every human being to be in hell with him that's been destroyed he's still active in this world at this time but his purpose his achievement his longing to get you human beings on his side against God and you human beings to be in hell with me that's destroyed because Christ died because Christ is the righteous one when he has spirit of truth will come he'll convict you of that he'll convict you there's a day coming there's a day coming and all that will be seen and Satan will be cast into the lake of fire and brimstone to be tempted to be tormented forever there is justice in the end and on that throne on the day of judgment on that throne will be
[59:29] Christ Christ will be on that throne and the Holy Spirit comes to convict us of sin of righteousness and of judgment not to terrify us not to leave us miserable and helpless but in order to lead us to Christ that's how we can tell if someone's conviction of sin is of the Holy Spirit because you know this this is quite frightening Satan can convict of sin but to get you to despair Satan convicts to get you to say there's no hope for me and that's a lie Christ died for sinners that's the truth and to say there's no hope for me and too bad is very sinful there is hope in Christ for everyone out of hell who hears the gospel he convicts to make you hate
