[0:00] Luke chapter 22 We'll read from verse 47 of the chapter Luke 22 and verse 47 That's on page 829 of the church Bibles Luke 22 verse 47 Let's hear the word of God While he was still speaking there came a crowd The man called Judas, one of the twelve was leading them He drew near to Jesus to kiss him But Jesus said to him, Judas, would you betray the son of man with a kiss?

[0:55] When those who were around him saw what would follow They said, Lord, shall we strike with a sword? And one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear But Jesus said, no more of this He touched his ear and healed him Then Jesus said to the chief priests and officers of the temple and elders Who had come out against him Have you come out against a robber with swords and clubs?

[1:23] When I was with you day after day in the temple You did not lay hands on me But this is your hour And the power of darkness Then they seized him and led him away Bringing him into the high priest's house And Peter was following at a distance And when he had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard And sat down together Peter sat down among them Then a servant girl seeing him as he sat in the light And looking closely at him said This man also was with him But he denied it saying Woman, I do not know him And a little later someone else saw him and said You are also are one of them But Peter said, man, I am not And after an interval of about an hour still Another insisted saying Certainly this man also was with him For he too is a Galilean But Peter said Man, I do not know what you are talking about And immediately while he was still speaking

[2:26] The rooster crowed And the Lord turned and looked at Peter And Peter remembered the saying of the Lord How he had said to him Before the rooster crows today You will deny me three times And he went out and wept bitterly Now the men who were holding Jesus in custody Were mocking him as they beat him They also blindfolded him And kept asking him Prophesy Who is it that struck you?

[2:55] And they said many other things against him Blaspheming him When day came The assembly of the elders of the people Gathered together Both chief priests and scribes And they led him away to their council And they said If you are the Christ Tell us But he said to them If I tell you You will not believe And if I ask you You will not answer But from now on The Son of Man Shall be seated I have a right hand Of the power of God So they all said Are you the Son of God then?

[3:28] And he said to them You say that I am Then they said What further testimony do we need? We have heard it ourselves From his own lips And then we give praise to God For his holy And his perfect word Let's sing once more Again from the Scottish Psalter This time from Psalm 103 Scottish Psalter Psalm 103 It's on page 369 Psalm 103 On page 369 Let's sing verses 1 Down to verse 5 Of the Psalm O thou my soul Bless God the Lord And all that in me is Stirred up his holy name To magnify and bless Bless O my soul The Lord thy God And not forgetful be Of all his gracious benefits He hath bestowed on thee Psalm 103 Verses 1-5

[7:39] O my soul, the Lord thy God, and not forgetful me. O my soul, but not forgetful me. O my soul, the Lord thy God, and not forgetful me.

[7:52] First verse, first half a verse, even a quarter of a verse we find there. 1 Peter chapter 1, page 953. Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ.

[8:08] Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ. We said last week we pause in our study. We're looking at the last few months now, going through the Gospel of Mark.

[8:22] We pause there of both our morning and our evening studies just for a change of scene for us. And to, as we said a few weeks ago, to make sure we're preaching the full counsel of God. So we're going to start a new series.

[8:35] It'll extend over who knows how long. We'll keep doing it and stopping and we'll mix and match as we go. We're going to have a brand new series this morning. And we're looking at 12 normal men.

[8:49] 12 normal men. Looking at the disciples. Starting off with Peter. It's amazing when you actually stop to look and begin to study the disciples.

[9:03] They're always there. So we have a whole Gospel. Of course Jesus is a focus and so he should be. He is our Lord. He is our Saviour. But every interaction, almost every interaction, you see the disciples either beside him in the background.

[9:19] Whatever doing something or saying something. Sometimes saying and doing things they shouldn't be saying and shouldn't be doing. But they're always there somewhere. These 12 normal men.

[9:29] 12 normal men that Jesus called from all walks of life. And we touched on that even in our study in Mark. But our hope is just a very broad.

[9:39] And it has to be broad. Because we're covering three or four times many decades of these men's lives. But a short look at who these men were.

[9:51] Or what it was to be called by Jesus. Or how their lives were transformed by Jesus. Or how they both served him well. But also at times served him pretty badly.

[10:04] And what we can learn from these 12 normal, 12 ordinary men. As I said, we're starting off today with Peter. Very often when the apostles, when the disciples are listed.

[10:18] And the apostles of course. We see Peter's name often coming first. Again and again, Peter's name is first. Now sometimes you have to be careful with lists in Scripture.

[10:30] The Greek culture and Greek grammar doesn't emphasize order as we might. We think, well Peter's name is first. Therefore he's most important. That's not usually the case.

[10:41] But every time. Every single time we see a list of disciples. Peter's name is there first. He's not the most important. He's not better than the rest.

[10:52] But we see and we'll see today. He was often the de facto, as I were, spokesman of the group. He was often, I won't say leader of course, our saviour was leader.

[11:03] He was the one they followed. But amongst the men, amongst the disciples, Peter was always there first. Always opened his mouth first. Always seemed to get there first. So he's listed often as first.

[11:16] How do you summarize someone's whole life? In half an hour, 20 minutes, 25 minutes. We can't hope to do that. But just very broadly, we can see just three areas of this man's life.

[11:30] How Jesus touched each area. First of all, we can see Peter the strong. Peter the strong. Peter the weak.

[11:42] And Peter the kept. So strong, weak and kept. As always, for those here who as of yet can't say that you know Jesus.

[11:54] And that you love Jesus. And you're seeking after him. Again, as always, please know that we are so, so thankful you're here. And we praise the Lord you're here. And we do pray that not just you know our love and our care.

[12:08] But this day you would know the Lord's love in your life for you. But for those here who as of yet can't say you're a Christian. As we spend a short time looking at the life of Peter.

[12:20] See this quick thinking, quick witted time, quick acting man. See how Jesus uses this man.

[12:31] This normal man. This normal small business owner. This fisherman. Who we can be sure was at times as rough as anything. This normal man. Who Jesus used for his own glory.

[12:46] And see yourself that no matter what you may be thinking. Your ability or lack of. Your potential to be saved or lack of. Jesus can.

[12:57] Jesus can. And has. And will. Save. And make great kingdom use of. Men and women.

[13:08] Just like you. For those here who know Jesus. And those of us who love Jesus. As we see the life of Peter. Just have in the back of our minds. That failure to serve Jesus well.

[13:21] Well. It is not. As it were a death sentence. To our faith. Failure to serve our saviour well. Does not disqualify us. It might do.

[13:31] Humanly speaking. It might do it in church courts. But it not. Qualify us. It does not disqualify us. From serving him. We might fail to serve him. Yes.

[13:42] We might say things. And do things. Like Peter does. That are so wrong. But yet. Jesus keeps his people. And we will see that. As we go on. First of all. Peter.

[13:52] The strong. What do we see. Of this foremost. Of disciples. This foremost. Of apostles. We see he is strong in faith.

[14:03] And strong in service. Just three main areas. We see. That Peter is strong. First of all. We see him of course. At the very start. As Peter. The rock. John chapter one.

[14:15] Peter. The rock. We have covered this before. As we saw. The calling of these men. In the account of Mark. We saw of course. Peter's brother. Andrew. First encounters Jesus.

[14:26] And then he. He goes and tells. Peter. Of course at this point. It is still called Simon. He goes and tells Simon. That we have found. The Christ. We have found the one. We have been looking for.

[14:38] And we see Peter. Straight away. The second he is called. The second Andrew tells him. We found the saviour. We found the messiah. Peter as it were.

[14:49] Just drops. All things. He downs tools. Straight away. The second. He is asked. To follow Jesus. Peter follows him.

[15:00] Peter. We said. He owns a business. He is. He is partners. With Andrew and John. He is partners. With these men. Who own. What we can assume. Was a good fishing business.

[15:12] But in a split second. As he comes face to face. With his Lord. As his Lord calls him. Peter just follows. Of course. That is not everyone's story.

[15:23] But for Peter. That was his story. He couldn't. Say. Or do otherwise. The second Jesus. Appeared in his life. He saw the one. He had been looking for.

[15:35] And Jesus. Was instantly. More important to him. Than all. Other things. He had. But Peter was still a man. He was still a normal. Human being.

[15:46] We often forget that. With our disciples. It's a theme. We'll see over the next few weeks. They were still normal. In bad ways. But also in good ways. This is not important. Really for us today. But just to note.

[15:56] The small example. That. Peter was married. At 1 Corinthians. Chapter 9. We know he was married. He had a normal. Family situation. And he remained married.

[16:10] Up until those days. He still served as saviour. He still kept his family. He was still a normal man. In many ways. But he was there also. To be called. And equipped.

[16:20] And sent. By Jesus. To be. An apostle. Peter is called. And we see. The second Jesus. Looks at Simon.

[16:31] He looks at Simon. Before him. And Jesus says to him. You're now going to be called. Cephas. Peter. Cephas.

[16:44] Is just. A different form. Peter. Of course. Is the. The Greek. Petros. For rock. Cephas. Is just the. Aramaic. Version of Peter. It's the same name.

[16:56] So in Jesus. Of course. Speaking Aramaic. Says to Peter. You're going to be called. Cephas. He's saying. You're going to be called. Petros. You're going to be called. Now on. The rock. In a second.

[17:11] In a second. Peter. Peter. Has gone. From a normal man. Doing his normal job. Fishing. Serving. In a second. He is called.

[17:22] His name is changed. And Jesus then calls him. The rock. And we'll see that more in a second. The importance of that. Again and again. We see Peter. As the focal point.

[17:33] Of the activity of the disciples. When they go do things. He is there. When they plan things. He is there. He is the rock. On which they seem to plan. And move around. He is.

[17:44] The center. Of the planning. He's a man. Who obviously. The Lord used his. His own natural skills. To get the work done. When God calls us.

[17:56] He always does it. He doesn't call us. Blankly. He calls us. And he uses the skills. He's given us. And of course.

[18:06] There's that. Whole. Theological dimension. In. In. Matthew 16. Of Peter. Of course. Being called the rock. And. Our Catholic friends.

[18:17] Will say that's evidence. Of why Peter. Of course. Being the first Pope. But if you gain that. As we keep saying. If you just read in context. You'll see very quickly. That Jesus.

[18:27] Is. Making a simple statement. We'll see in a second. More about that. Peter's a strong man. He's a fisherman. He's strong physically.

[18:38] He's strong mentally. He's strong willed. And the Lord uses that. Peter is. The rock. Peter's also seen. To be quite responsible.

[18:49] At least at times. At the Mount of Transfiguration. We see. Peter. James. And John. Being specially called. To follow Jesus. To that place.

[19:00] That place where we see. The glimpse. The greatest glimpse. Of Christ's glory on earth. Of who he really is. Of his full. Deity. As he shines.

[19:11] Bright and glorious. On that hill. On that Mount. Of Transfiguration. As they see. Just a glimpse. As to the heavenly deity. Of our glorious.

[19:22] Savior. Peter's there. At this pivotal moment. In Christ's. Earthly ministry. Peter's there. He's been given.

[19:33] This great responsibility. Of course. He then goes and says. And assumes. Something foolish. But he's still there. Jesus still calls them. To be there. To see. This glorious moment.

[19:47] Even more practically. We see Peter being used. Luke 22. Verse 8. Jesus sends. Peter and John. To go and prepare. The Passover. For that last supper.

[19:59] So in holy ways. Peter's is there. And Peter's responsible. But also in practical. Everyday ways. The last supper. Needs to be prepared.

[20:10] Someone has to go and do it. And this is not just a normal. Normal meal. This is of course. The very pinnacle. As Christ leads the disciples. And Peter and John.

[20:21] Are given the responsibility. Of going. And preparing. This supper. For 12. Or 13. He is a responsible man. Spiritually responsible.

[20:32] Practically. We also see. He is a man. Who God blessed. With a great amount. Of insight.

[20:44] He is strong. In that God. Gives him. Insight. Revelation. We could say. He is strong. He is the rock. He is responsible. He also was given.

[20:55] Some great. Revelation. From God. Matthew 16. 16. Where Peter. Makes that glorious. Statement about Jesus. You.

[21:06] Are. The Christ. The son. Of. The living. God. The clearest. Declaration. Of his belief. Of his faith.

[21:17] Of who. Jesus is. Up to this point. In Matthew's gospel. This is the clearest. Explanation. Of who Jesus is. You are the Christ. You are the saviour. The messiah. You are the messiah.

[21:28] The son. Of the living God. And Jesus. Then. Says. Straight away. Peter is blessed. Because that information.

[21:39] That revelation. Did not come from him. But it came from heaven. It was given. To him. Yes. We have seen a second.

[21:50] Peter. Is about to fail Jesus. Again and again. But that does not just diminish. The reality. That Peter. Was a strong man. Called by Jesus. To serve him well.

[22:02] Peter was the rock. Which other disciples. Relied upon. Humanly speaking. He was a man. Given great responsibility. In spiritual things. And in practical things.

[22:12] He was also a man. In whom God revealed. This glorious truth. Of who Jesus. Truly. Was. But we know of course. That. Peter.

[22:24] Even as we read. Together. In our reading. In Luke chapter 22. Peter certainly had. His weaknesses. Peter the weak. Peter the weak.

[22:37] He's weak. In three ways. Weak in many ways. But he's weak in three ways. At least we can see quickly. Just now. He was weak. Because he often relied. On his own.

[22:48] Strength. He often relied. On his own strength. The account we have. In Matthew 14. Of course. Jesus. Calls. Peter out. Jesus walking on water.

[22:59] We know the account. To walking on water. And they're in the boat. And they're terrified. And Jesus. Peter first calls out. It's the master.

[23:09] It's our saviour. It's the Lord. And Jesus. Invites Peter out. To the water. And Jesus begins. To walk on water. Going towards Jesus. Peter does. As Peter takes.

[23:20] Step by step. He's getting there. He's walking on water. He is of course. Being involved. In this miracle. Peter. But we know.

[23:30] That's a short lived experience. For poor Peter. Because as Peter realises. What he's doing. As he realises. He is walking on water. And this is not something. He should be able to do. As he realises.

[23:41] The danger. And the fear. Of this reality. As he takes his eyes. Of course. Away from Jesus. Peter sinks. Into the water.

[23:52] Peter. Peter. Again. And again. Relies. On his own. Strength. And by relying.

[24:02] On his own strength. He ruined. What was a beautiful moment. A moment. Where he and his saviour. Where he's walking. Towards his saviour. Where he's being upheld. Literally upheld. On the water.

[24:13] By his saviour. A saviour. Who has full control. Of the elements. Who created every atom. Of the water. Beneath their feet. Peter ruins. The moment.

[24:25] By panicking. By thinking. About himself. By thinking. That he can't do this. This isn't possible. Eyes away from Jesus. And he sinks. And he sinks.

[24:37] Again. And again. We see Peter. Hindering himself. By relying. On his own strength. Even the chapter. We had. In Luke. Chapter 22. As he lops.

[24:48] Off the ear. Of the high priest servant. You're thinking. Peter. What are you doing? What are you doing? You're making the situation. If nothing else. You're making it a lot worse. A lot worse.

[25:01] He means well. He often means so well. But he relies on his own strength. Again. And again. And by doing that. He makes a disaster of things. Again. And.

[25:12] Again. Brothers and sisters. As we remind ourselves. As to. Peter. And his first failing. Of relying on his own strength. Even these two examples.

[25:25] How quickly. Do we find ourselves. Thinking. Oh man. Yeah. Perhaps. The disciples. And ourselves. Are more alike. Than we realise. We perhaps.

[25:36] Don't have the strength. Of Peter. We don't perhaps have. The revelation. He was given. But we do. Certainly share. In his weaknesses. Jesus. So often. We think. We can do things.

[25:47] Even if this is. Just to the brothers and sisters. So often. We think. We can do things. Ourselves. Yes. We know Jesus. We love Jesus. And we know. He is in sovereign control. Of all reality.

[25:57] But yet. We still do our own thing. Do things our way. And end up. In a complete mess. Peter often relied. Too much. On his own strength.

[26:10] He's also. Very self. Assured. Very. Very. Self. Assured. Now.

[26:22] In some sense. It's not always a bad thing. It's good to believe. In your own abilities. At times. But. Peter has. That. To an unhealthy level. Doesn't he? He. Seems to just.

[26:33] Jump. Into every situation. Without taking a second. Thought. About it. Ten. Chapters. Ten.

[26:44] Chapters. After being called. The rock. We then see. The denial. Of our. Saviour. By Peter. We see.

[26:59] Matthew 26. Matthew 26. When Jesus is telling the disciples. A heart wrenching moment. And Jesus is telling the disciples. The son of man must be killed. Son of man will be given up.

[27:10] But I will be tortured. I will be killed. I will die. He was telling them. Quite simply. What lay ahead of him. What they would expect to see.

[27:21] That his end was coming soon. And Peter of course. Being so full of himself. Can't help himself. But he interrupts Jesus almost. He interrupts Jesus. And says. That won't happen.

[27:32] Jesus. That won't happen. I won't let that happen. You're saying. You're going to be captured. And killed. You won't be. I'll look after you. I'll keep you. I'll protect you. He means well perhaps.

[27:46] But he is. Interrupting. The son of God. To tell him. He's wrong. He's willing. Almost. To argue with Jesus. To explain.

[27:56] And get his own point across. He's so self-assured. He forgets. What he's doing. Doesn't realize. What he's saying. Again.

[28:08] Do we not see ourselves there? Perhaps we're not as bold. As Peter. In our self-assurance. Perhaps we never say to Jesus. That he's wrong. But being honest. We do. Don't we?

[28:20] We do say it. Not fully. But we might think it. We might doubt. Times. When life. Isn't quite going to our plans. We question.

[28:31] And we really question. And perhaps we. To our shame. Doubt. Doubt. Where things are going. Lord. This isn't going. How I wanted it to go. This isn't going.

[28:42] How it should be going. This isn't going. How I think it should go. To my plans. Like Peter. We're very self-assured. That we know what's happening. Forgetting.

[28:53] That we're speaking. To God. Who truly knows. What is happening. And thirdly. Peter is a man. Of course. Who gives in to fear.

[29:06] To read in Luke. Chapter 22. He is faced. With three accusations. Even the face.

[29:18] Of a small. Probably young. Servant girl. He crumbles. He goes from telling Jesus. I will not deny you. You're my Lord.

[29:28] My Savior. I will serve you. I will not deny you. I will be with you. To the end. No time later. No time at all later.

[29:41] As he faces up. To a small. Wee servant girl. He crumbles. He is overtaken. By fear. As the crowd grows. Peter.

[29:51] Who once. Tell Jesus. Who once. Would say to Jesus. I will die with you. I will die for you. Can't. Can't. Even. Admit. To knowing him. Because.

[30:05] He relies. On his own strength. Often. Because he is so self-assured. Because he gives in to fear. So quickly. Peter. Ends up. Doing the unthinkable. Of course. He ends up denying.

[30:16] Jesus. Blatantly. Clearly. And more. Horrifyingly. We saw. In the account of Luke. After denying him. He then.

[30:27] Almost as were. Catches. Jesus' eye. Jesus turns to look at him. And he sees. Jesus looking at him. And he looks at Jesus. And he knows.

[30:38] He knows. In that second. What he has done. He knows. He has betrayed. His saviour. He knows. He has done. The one thing. He said. He would never do.

[30:50] It's truly. A horrifying. And painful. Moment. Verse 61. Of the chapter. We read.

[31:00] And the Lord. Turned. And looked at Peter. And Peter. Remembered. The saying. Of the Lord. And so on. And he went out. And wept.

[31:11] Bitterly. Peter might be strong. He might be the rock. He might be very confident. He might be very able. He might be very responsible. But Peter is also a man. Who relies on his own strength.

[31:23] And fails. Who is so full of self-assurance. And has no ability. To actually do anything whatsoever. As a man who gives in. So quickly. To fear. But praise God.

[31:38] That Peter's story doesn't end. With that last look. Towards the saviour. It carries on. It carries on. He is also finally Peter. The kept.

[31:49] Peter. The kept. That glorious account. As we come. To the point. We see Jesus. Having been resurrected. And we covered it before. During the time of vacancy.

[32:02] We saw breakfast of Jesus. He's resurrected. And Jesus calls for disciples. And for fishing of course. And we catch the fish. And they come back to shore.

[32:14] And Jesus is there. And he's prepared breakfast for them. And you can almost. With respect. Feel the tension in the air. Peter's there. And for once. Peter is quiet.

[32:24] You think Peter will be all over the situation. No. But Peter is quieter than usual. In that account. And Jesus. Almost takes Peter to one side. And he asks Peter.

[32:35] Of course. Do you love me? That free time. Do you love me? Do you love me? Do you love me? That's a whole sermon itself. For another day. Peter do you love me?

[32:46] Literally. Peter do you care for me? Literally. Peter. Are you mine? And poor Peter. We see him exasperated.

[32:58] Again and again. Yes Lord. Yes Lord. Yes Lord. In that moment. In that moment. Jesus reassures. Poor Peter. That although he has failed him.

[33:10] And let him down. And denied him. And made a mess of things. He reassures him. For risen Lord Jesus. With the marks. And his hand on his side. Reassures.

[33:21] Poor Peter. But he is still his. He hasn't let him go. Despite Peter failing Jesus. Jesus still. Has such great love for Peter. Such great time.

[33:32] And care for Peter. He even goes out of his way. We could say. To reassure Peter. That he is still his. Peter is kept.

[33:44] We also then see. That Peter becomes a preacher. That great servant of Acts. Where we see. Peter. Peter who was. Once.

[33:55] Perhaps about to lose. All his hope of faith. And all his reality. And all his service. Peter then goes. And preaches. Preaches. That wonderful message. Where so many.

[34:05] Hundreds. If not thousands. Are saved. Repent. And believe. His gospel is for you. And your children. Repent. And believe. He becomes. A great preacher.

[34:17] He can't help. But talk about the saviour. Who showed such great love. For him. Very briefly. You see. Peter is also kept. In the second reading.

[34:28] We had. A short reading. In first Peter. Peter. An apostle. Of Jesus Christ. Isn't just a preacher.

[34:40] He's an apostle. A sent one. Of Jesus. One sent. By the master. For all his failures. All his trouble.

[34:51] Peter lives. A life. The rest. Of his life. Serving. His saviour. An apostle. Spends the rest.

[35:02] Of his life. Giving. All that he had. Mentally. And physically. To serving. His saviour. To spreading. The gospel. To encouraging. The people. This is the life.

[35:13] Of Peter. A man. Who was strong. In many ways. And God. Used that strength. Our saviour. Made use of that strength. But a man. Of course. Who was also weak.

[35:24] In many ways. But his saviour. Forgave. That weakness. Jesus. And Peter. A man. Who was kept. Forgiven.

[35:35] By Jesus. Accepted. Again. By Jesus. Reminded. By Jesus. That he still. Was his own. A man. Who would have gone. To preach. A glorious sermon.

[35:46] And many sermons. Proclaiming. The risen Lord Jesus. And a man. Who would call himself. An apostle. One. Who saw. The living Jesus. And one.

[35:57] Who was sent. By him. To do his job. Peter lived. A life. And Peter died. A death. Proclaiming. His saviour.

[36:10] He is a man. Like us. Normal. He said. He was married. All the failings. And. All the shortcomings.

[36:20] That we face. Day to day. All the ways. We mess things up. Peter messed things up too. But also. Like us. He worshipped. A living saviour. Who keeps a hold.

[36:32] On his people. Who promises. To love his people. Like Peter. Despite. How much of a mess. Perhaps. We have made of things. And indeed. Are making of things.

[36:43] Jesus will still use us. Still cause his own. And still. Like Peter here. Use us. Perhaps. To see. The gospel spread. Even in this village.
