[0:00] Psalm 95, Psalm 95, taking in the whole Psalm this evening. Psalm 95, come let us sing to the Lord, let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation.
[0:18] Remember we started last week a series looking and following quite helpfully given to us. We have not been told to preach them but it is a good series to do so why not.
[0:30] The aspects of what makes a healthy church. Last week we saw what it is to have healthy gospel preaching. What does healthy gospel preaching look like for us and what should we aspire to and what should any minister and ourselves a congregation, what should we aspire to both see and listen to for healthy gospel preaching.
[0:55] Last evening we have the next segment of that which is healthy gospel worship. What does healthy gospel worship look like for a congregation?
[1:08] If you remember we are on Lord's Day evenings over the next year, ten years, however long the Lord gives us together. We will be looking at what makes us, why we do things the way we do them.
[1:22] We saw last week, why are we Presbyterian? And we said, well why are we in Tolstah, Presbyterian? So one night we will do, why do we sing Psalms for example. That is not tonight's sermon.
[1:34] Quite simply, tonight's sermon is what does healthy worship look like in terms of scripture. And to be very blunt, and I hope you agree, you might think singing Psalms is the correct way and that is my view and we'll hear that and we'll preach that later on.
[1:52] But just because you're singing Psalms doesn't mean you're worshipping well. You might believe the opposite, you might believe hymns are okay too, which is your liberty to believe that. But just because you have that included doesn't mean you're worshipping well.
[2:06] Healthy gospel worship is not so much about what we are singing, at least this evening is not our concern. It's more about how we are singing. To put a finer turn in it, you can sing the Psalter with four part harmonies which we should aspire to.
[2:26] Absolutely. Let's learn every tune we can. Let's get all the tunefulness and melody we can together and praise God that we'll see that more later on about that. That's a good thing. But you can have the most melodious congregation singing the most beautiful four part harmony of a psalm and sing it without understanding or caring or meaning a word that's being sung.
[2:47] And that's not healthy gospel worship. That's not worship at all. That's a performance. And we're not here to perform. We're here to worship. So what does it look like for us to have healthy gospel worship?
[2:59] Just three questions. We can ask and answer from Psalm 95. We'll be jumping around to Psalm. So please do look with me as we go through these verses together.
[3:12] Now of course, we say worship. Our minds perhaps go to our sung worship only. One thing that's good for us to remember, and this psalm will point us that way, our whole lives are modes and means of worship.
[3:27] From the second we wake up in the morning to the second we close our eyes at night, we are to live lives of worship. That's a heavy calling. That's a big calling. In the prayer, we prayed for those who are working, those who are at home, those who have children, those who are studying, so on.
[3:44] Every part of our lives, at home, outside in the village, in private, in public, there are to be lives of worship. That includes times of gathered worship, like our evening, like our Lord's Day.
[3:58] That includes these times. But that's not the only times. And we need to ensure that we have a mindset where we understand we are worshipping God. At least we're called to worship God every second of every day of our lives.
[4:11] And that should enliven us. That should lift us up. And this psalm points us in that direction. So first of all, the first question, quite simply, why do we worship?
[4:26] Why do we worship? A few answers in our psalm. First of all, in verse 1. O come, let us sing to the Lord.
[4:38] Let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation. Why do we worship from Psalm 1? Well, we worship because we are singing, we are praising, we are worshipping who?
[4:49] The Lord. Yahweh. We come together tonight. And every day, I trust in our lives. When you wake up and when you engage and worship throughout the day.
[5:01] You and we together, we are worshipping Yahweh. The eternal, self-sustaining God. As we said, who created everything with the word of his mouth.
[5:18] But everything came from nothing. Well, no, everything came from God. And it's all nothing to him. In terms of his power. His power is eternal.
[5:29] Therefore, we can't quantify it. We can't put a number to it. We can't put a level to it. He is eternal. And all the attributes we praise him for. His simplicity.
[5:40] His uniqueness. His togetherness. The unity of our God. We say all these things. And we love all these things. He is Yahweh.
[5:53] Who needs nothing. And needs no one. And yet, who created everything. And sustains everything. As we read there in Revelation.
[6:04] That reminder that it's all his. Every atom. Every molecule. Every bit and piece of creation. It's all his. He is worthy of worship.
[6:19] Because he is. I am that I am. He is Yahweh. He is God. But also, we see.
[6:31] He's not just distant and far away. He is worthy of worship. Because he is Yahweh. But also, he is Yahweh. Who is what? Who is the rock of our salvation. He is worthy of worship.
[6:43] That we worship him. Because, yes, he is great and glorious. And whilst not forgetting that. We look down to ourselves. And we see he is the God. Who has not remained distant.
[6:54] Who has never been distant. But he is the God. Who is close. And so close. That he is the rock of our salvation. That we were lost. And we were drowning.
[7:05] And we were dead in the bottom. And there we are placed and plucked. Given new life. And placed on the rock of our salvation. He is unmoving. He is unwavering.
[7:16] And he gives a place of help. A place of safety. A place of strength. Eternally. For us. We worship him. Because he is God. And we worship him.
[7:26] Because. He is God. Who condescended. Who stepped down. To rescue us. That is verse 1.
[7:38] Verses 3. End of verse 6. Plenty more reasons. Just to summarize for us. Verses 3. End of verse 6. We see. We worship him. Because he is both ruler. And creator.
[7:51] For the Lord is a great God. Verse 3. And a great king above all gods. He is sovereign. And he is true God. Capital G.
[8:01] Over all the other gods. Lowercase g. Now we can understand that. In at least two different ways. And both these. Both these understandings are valid. And they go together.
[8:12] In one sense. We understand this. As the so-called gods. Of our world. The earthly gods. The earthly kings. We see that term being used. In scripture. To describe those.
[8:24] Who will set themselves up. As gods. So-called. Against God. As earthly humans. Who assume. God-like power. And who ascribe to themselves.
[8:34] God-like power. Think of Pharaoh. He is worshipped as God. He was God. To the Egyptians. And yet. We see. He was just man. God is God.
[8:47] Over all of creation. Psalm 2. We think of that. Don't we? The kings. Who set themselves up. Against God. And his anointed one. And we see the Lord. He laughs from discord.
[8:58] He is so. Outside. And above. The power of these. Earthly kings combined. That they're nothing to him. But also. As we've been seeing. Recently.
[9:09] There are. And there is a sense. In which this talks. Of so-called gods. It's not just talking. Of human. Gods. We've covered this before. Very briefly. There is a sense here.
[9:20] Of this is speaking. And reminding. That the angels. The fallen angels. In particular. That's a whole different series for us. And we'll get there one day. For the Lord's help. But this is also speaking to.
[9:31] And reminding. That the demonic forces. That they are so-called gods. But he is great king. Above all of them. We took Pharaoh as the example.
[9:43] And we'll do this series one day. But when Moses is there. In Egypt. And when he's. He's bringing. The Lord's power. To the Egyptians. And showing them.
[9:54] God's power. And when you see. Pharaoh's magicians. Can. Copy up to a point. And their copy is a poor copy. But just. When they can copy up to a point.
[10:05] Up to a level. The work the Lord is doing. Through Moses. These magicians. Weren't doing magic tricks. The people weren't stupid. The people.
[10:16] Didn't see magic tricks. They saw. Magicians. Do the same things. Up to a point. Which the Lord. Was doing through Moses. What's my point here? The point here is.
[10:27] Evil is real. And we know that. And. When you study. When you. At any time. Studying. The. Religions. Of the world. You know.
[10:38] People don't worship. Rocks and stones. And idols of gold. Because they're shiny. Because they like them. They worship these idols. Because these idols. Benefit them. And in one sense. Yeah. They're rocks.
[10:48] And they're stone. But what's behind those idols? The children of Israel. As we saw in Judges. As they threw. Their babies. Into the carved. Iron images.
[10:59] And stone images. Of Baal. Well. It's iron. It's stone. But. While they did that. They received some sort of blessing. Back. At least. In a short term. There are demonic forces.
[11:14] And we know biblically. We either worship God. Or we worship. What? The evil one. And God reminds us. That he sets himself up. Over earthly gods.
[11:24] So called kings. But also. Over every other force. And power. He is. God. A great king. Above all. Other gods.
[11:35] We also worship him. Because quite simply. He is creator. Verses 4. And verse 5. And verse 6. It's all his. From the depths of the sea.
[11:46] To the heights of the mountains. From end to end. East to west. Up and down. You can map out the whole universe. It's all his. There's amazing images recently.
[11:57] Of a new satellite. We've been getting images from. Pictures we've seen before. The poor Hubble. Telescope and satellite. We've been getting photos for years. But a new satellite. It's been taking photos.
[12:09] And you see the wonder. Of far flung objects in space. The question often asked is. Why? Why does God make these things?
[12:20] Things we will never see. Stars and galaxies. We will never comprehend. We can never get close enough to see. For his own good pleasure.
[12:32] To show us he is God. Because he's a God who delights in creation. He's a God who delights in making what he has made. He's a God of beauty. And a God of care.
[12:43] Of finite. Of infinite. Of beauty. Infinite care. Who creates with finite. With infinite. Beauty. And infinite wonder. As he makes this world.
[12:54] As he set Adam and Eve in a garden. We covered that before. In a beautiful garden. Not just useful. But beautiful. As scripture tells us. Quite simply. And quite clearly. It was a beautiful place. He is ruler.
[13:05] And he is creator. He is God. Over all. Creation. He formed it all. It all belongs to him. Animals. To the sea. To the mountains. And summarized for us in verse 6.
[13:19] O come. Let us worship and bow down. Let us kneel before the Lord. Our maker. We worship him because he is Yahweh.
[13:30] He is glorious. We worship him because he is ruler. And creator. And finally. Quite simply. We worship him in verse 7. Because he is our shepherd. He is God.
[13:41] But he is also the good shepherd. Of his people. We covered that a length before. In our study of Psalm 23. The beautiful words of verse 7.
[13:52] For he is our God. And we are the people of his pasture. And the sheep of his hand. He holds on to us. He claims us as his own.
[14:05] So the first question asked. And answered from the Psalm. Why do we worship? Well the next question has to be then. Well what is our worship? What is our worship? What is our posture?
[14:17] We could say. Not physically. What is our posture before God? Where is our heart before God in our worship? Well verse 1 again.
[14:27] Back to verse 1. We see we are to worship as a gathered people. O come. Let us sing to the Lord. Verse 2. Let us come. Let us come again.
[14:38] In verse 2. And so on. And so on. Verse 7. He is our God. Verse 6. Let us. You can count the numbers. Let us. Count all the plurals in this Psalm. And you see. We are to worship corporately.
[14:50] We are to worship together. Now yes we live lives. Quite literally. We live life day by day. Serving the Lord on our own in many ways. We have. Perhaps we have only Christians in our homes.
[15:01] Perhaps we have a Christian in our workplace. But in one sense. That's part of our worship. But the reality is. Our worship needs to be corporate. We need to worship together.
[15:13] However. That illusion. That illustration. That there is no Christian on their own. I keep saying it. And I know I'm sure I say it again and again and again at times. But look to all the promises of the New Testament.
[15:26] And if you find me one promise that God makes to his people. That isn't said in the plural. Then I haven't found it myself yet. One promise that God makes to his people.
[15:36] That is not given to the plural. God speaks and God gives promises. When he does so. He does it to the church. All the letters of Paul.
[15:47] All the pastoral epistles. All the promises of our saviour. When he's not speaking to one person clearly. He is speaking in plural. We are to worship as a gathered people.
[16:01] There is no Christian on their own. Yes we worship every day individually. But we must never minimise public or corporate worship.
[16:13] Now we caveat and we say yes there's times. Of course there is life. There is times when we can't meet. And there's no point going into the details of that. Because you know yourselves.
[16:25] Whether you're being lazy or we can't do it. Quite simple as that. And some people have a very tender conscience. And a very burning bit of flax.
[16:37] And it's very unwise at times for a minister to say. Well if you're this or this you should do this. Well no. You know yourself. Your health situation. Your family situation. When you can worship.
[16:48] And indeed when you feel like you can't worship. But you know you can be there. There's no reason not to be. Be in worship. And there's times there's family situations.
[16:58] There's complications. There's health situations. And health complications. And work commitments for some. I know that. But this is not saying the caveats. I'm saying on a normal Sunday. When there's nothing else happening.
[17:10] The family situation is not out of control. Your work situation is not out of control. Your health situation is fine. Then it are places to be together. Not out of duty. But out of desire.
[17:21] You see the desire in the psalmist. The joy as he's encouraging us. Come let us sing to the Lord. Come into his presence. And so on and so on. It's there.
[17:32] We should be desiring. We should be taking great joy. We should be worshipping together jubilantly. With joy. And I know for years it's not perhaps been our easiest way of doing things.
[17:44] Perhaps it's to our shame we have not been joyfully gathering together. But brothers and sisters. If we're not taking joy together and worshipping the Lord. Then where do we find our joy? Our worship of the Lord.
[17:57] Yes it must be reverential. It must be in our. But that doesn't mean it can't be joyful. In fact I see we're perhaps missing something. If our worship to the Lord is not full of joy.
[18:09] The psalmist certainly thinks so. The first church. The early Christians certainly worship the Lord of joy. If we're not. We must ask ourselves. Why? We worship gathered together.
[18:21] Also in verse 2. We see we worship in his presence. Let us come into the presence. Into his presence. With thanksgiving.
[18:34] Brothers and sisters. We worship. Just now. Corporately. In the presence of God. Now there's one way. In one sense. We know the Lord is always with his people. Always.
[18:44] We know that. We understand that. He is God. There is not one place we go. Psalm 139. Where the Lord is not with us continually. He hears us. He sees us.
[18:56] There is a sense. Where when his people gather together. In corporate worship. The Lord's presence is very much there. Now we say that theologically.
[19:07] But also. We know it in our experience. I know we don't base our theology on experience. When theology and experience line up together. We praise the Lord for it. I don't know about yourselves.
[19:19] But I'm sure there are some. Perhaps many Christians. There's been perhaps one time or many times. If you're very blessed. Where you are certain. And you can almost feel the tangible presence of God.
[19:32] In corporate worship. It's not coming from the tune being used. It's not coming from the minister. Using the right word. The right tone. It's coming from a sense. That the Lord is very much present.
[19:42] In worship. Now we don't look for that. We don't leave disappointed. That's not how we felt. Because the truth is. The Lord is always present.
[19:54] When his people worship him in spirit and in truth. At this moment. The Lord. His presence is here. As he worship him in spirit. And in truth. And that is no small thing for us. I worry.
[20:08] Do we. Perhaps. Or do we. Perhaps. At times. At least. Lose sight. As to the truth of this verse. We worship the Lord. We do so in the presence of a holy God.
[20:18] Of a present God. Of a God. Who tells us. He desires to see our face. And to hear our voice. A God. Who hears our worship.
[20:30] Because we worship him. Who is there. And here. With us. Right now. Yes. Yes. Our worship. Should be reverential.
[20:40] For that fact. God is a God of order. Not a God of chaos. And notwithstanding. That our brothers and sisters.
[20:51] And denominations. Who perhaps worship. In a more jubilant way. Than we do. We praise the Lord for that. That is their culture. And there is no sin in that. The free church. For example. In Africa.
[21:01] In South Africa. They are their own. Domination. Now pretty much. They are long since gone from us. We praise the Lord for it. They have their own leaders. They have their own people. And they are very much. A South African church. Their theology.
[21:12] Is as confessional as ours. They stick to their confession. Perhaps closer than we do. In many ways. When you ever see. If you have a chance. To watch them worship.
[21:23] Brothers and sisters. They will be singing their psalms. But they will sing it. In a way that is very much. Culturally. Real to them. And they will jump.
[21:35] And they will dance. While singing. And they are doing it. In worship of their Lord. They are not being.
[21:46] Irreverent. They are being reverential. Brothers and sisters. We are part of that global church. A worldwide church. And the Lord. Is with his people.
[21:56] Wherever they worship him. In spirit. And in truth. Our worship needs to be joyful. But also needs to be reverent. And we keep these things together. And we hold them together. However. He is worthy of worship.
[22:10] And we do so as God. We do so in his presence. Do so in reverence. Yes. Also. The sad reminder. That we see in verse 8. That section. In our psalm here.
[22:21] We join together. Just now in worship. And we do so as those. Who are sinners. We do so as those. Like the Israelites here.
[22:32] Who naturally worship themselves. There are times. If we are being very honest. You will sit through. A service of worship.
[22:45] And you are just glad to be over. You are just glad to be home again. You are thinking man. And you don't listen to a word. That has been said. Not just to forget the sermon. But just of God's word.
[22:56] Of singing the praise. Of prayers. You have heard nothing. Your minds and other things. I am not talking about. Hard situations. Or families. I am talking about.
[23:07] When you are just not paying attention. Because. You are not bothered. Your love has grown cold. Your heart has grown. Perhaps a wee bit hard. A film at least.
[23:18] Over your heart. And. You can feel yourself. Not enjoying worship. You can feel yourself. Not looking forward. To worship anymore. And you feel yourself. Drifting perhaps somewhat. And we see that taking place.
[23:30] The Lord reminds us. Of a. A great drifting way. Of his people. As the Israelites. Again and again. Hardened their hearts. As again and again. They. They sent.
[23:40] And tested the Lord. And. And walked away. And moved away. And the warning. Is quite clear to us. We naturally want to worship ourselves.
[23:51] Therefore. There is part of it. Where. Worship must be a discipline for us. As much as our reading. And our prayer. Our public. And private worship.
[24:02] Must be a discipline. Now I'm not saying. I'm not saying. You must do. Two hours a day. And this time. And that time. No. Whatever works. For your pattern. In your life. And your situation.
[24:13] That's. You have to decide. But all the caveats. In place. All the. All the. All the. Other reasons. In place. On a normal day.
[24:24] We must make time. For private worship. A normal week. We must make time. For public worship. Not so I can get numbers. In the door. Not so we can get.
[24:35] People in our congregation. No. Because it's what we're made to do. As God's people. It's what we're built to do. And. I'm not saying this. And. Perhaps this part.
[24:45] I wish it wasn't recorded. But it's not. I'm saying. I am. Overjoyed. Of the numbers. We have. At the likes of our prayer meeting. Brothers and sisters. We should be overjoyed. Of this. I know. There's workers. I know there's health situations.
[24:55] So I'm not saying. All the. All the reasons aside. I am overjoyed. Just. As your minister. We are a worshipping people. We are a praying people. And I am thankful for that.
[25:07] And please do. Know that. Everyone who comes to us. Comments on the fact. That we are a worshipping people. People enjoy. And they appreciate. And they can sense.
[25:18] And they can feel. Our worship. And our sung praise. I know. Perhaps. As a congregation. There's times. We feel. We're. We're going to be singing better. Or whatever else. But people.
[25:29] Hear. The heart of our singing. When they come and worship with us. That's not to puff us up. That's just to encourage us. Not to rest on our laurels either. Or we must keep striving after that.
[25:39] But brothers and sisters. Let's keep worshipping the Lord. As we worship him. Just to summarise. For us then. The final question. Is. Well.
[25:50] How do we worship? What does this look for. In our practice? What does this look like. And mean. Excuse me. For us. Just some questions for us.
[26:01] Perhaps. To. To end on. To go home with. And to ponder. Ourselves. We've always said this evening. Do we.
[26:11] Look forward. To public worship. Do we. Enjoy the fact. That it is the Lord's day. Do we enjoy the fact. That we can worship. With brothers and sisters. Together. Or perhaps.
[26:24] Has public worship. Become. A chore. For us. To attend. And to engage in. We might well. Want things.
[26:34] Perhaps. Done differently. As part of our worship. But our first response. Should always be. Joy. The Lord has given us. And what we do have. In the Lord. I guess the next question.
[26:46] Then. Following on. Is. Do we come. To public worship. Ready. To listen. Are we ready. To hear. God's word. That applies.
[26:57] To myself. As much as it does. To yourselves. I assure you. Do we come. To public worship. Ready. To listen. To God's word. And then.
[27:08] Do we seek. Then. To apply. What we've heard. From God's word. To our lives. On Monday. Or Tuesday. Do we remember. Parts of the sermon. Parts of God's word.
[27:20] There's not one minister. Who. Who. Thinks for a second. Congregation remembers. His wonderful sermons. The statistics. Are worrying. But they're true. For every.
[27:31] Thousand words. Often. A minister preaches. Congregation. Might remember. Twenty. To thirty. So that's.
[27:42] That's the averages. For every. Hour. Of sermon. Every half hour. Sermon. It's probably five minutes. We'll actually remember. Come Wednesday. Come Thursday. Myself included.
[27:52] Of my own sermon. So I find my own sermons. And I know it's the same for us. But are we seeking to apply. What God is showing us. In his word. Are we seeking to apply that. Throughout the week. Are we continuing.
[28:03] That Sunday worship. Throughout the week. And using Sunday worship. Then as a. A springboard for us. To serve the Lord. Better during the week. Or do we go home on Sunday. And say well.
[28:13] I've done my job for the day. New day now. New week. Or do we go home. And do we think. Well how do I apply that. To myself. How do I bring that. Perhaps to. Those.
[28:25] Around me. Do you. And are you. I know the answer is yes. But just to remind us. Encourage us. Do you.
[28:35] And are you. Praying. For the minister. And. The elder. It's a privilege. And a joy. To serve.
[28:46] And this past year. Has been a. A joyous year. In many ways. To serve as your minister. But the truth is. And as you well know.
[28:56] And there's no sympathy. Looking for here. It's a calling. And. I will do it to the Lord. As long as the Lord. Keeps me doing it. But the truth is. That for. Not just myself. But every minister of the gospel. And some with much.
[29:07] Many more burdens. Than I'll ever have. It is not just a nine to five. Is it. It's a day to day thing. Whether in the manse. Whether on holiday. You never switch off.
[29:18] Your mind is always there. And so it should be. You are my people. And I was looking recently. At the call. I haven't seen it in a year. I put it away in a cupboard. And I haven't touched it in a year. It's not a bad reason.
[29:29] I just want to keep it safe. And if I take it out. I'll leave it somewhere. I'll forget about it. And who knows. What it will be. But I looked at the call. And I was reading again. The wording of it. That I think. These. Tulsa folks.
[29:41] Sign their names. To put in their souls. Under my care. Please remember. Not just myself. Please remember me. But please remember. The ministry of the gospel.
[29:53] In your prayers. And finally. Are you engaging. In daily. Personal. Worship. Of the Lord. Just to say.
[30:09] In closing. There is no. Right way of doing it. There's not. There's not. For some of you. You can read a chapter. Or ten chapters.
[30:21] And love. And remember every word you've read. For others. A few verses. Is all you can genuinely manage. Be it a few verses. Be it a few chapters.
[30:31] Whatever is your limit. You reach that limit. And you praise the Lord through it. Read the word. Perhaps. Listen to the word. Personally.
[30:43] That's what I do. If I'm walking in a village. Headphones in. I'm listening to the Bible. At night time. If I'm going to study. Typing away. Listen to the Bible. You can listen to a lot of scripture.
[30:54] But whatever. Looks like for you. In your time. In your family situation. Make it a daily practice. I know you all do. I'm sure you all do. But just to encourage you. And to remind us all.
[31:07] Don't worry about. Hitting plans. And goals. If they help you. Then use them. But just be in the word. Every day. Be in prayer. Every day. And then.
[31:20] Individually. As we seek to do that. Individually. Then. Together. As one body. We're able to come together. And to praise the Lord. And hopefully. Week by week. We become more and more.
[31:31] A church. Where there is healthy. Gospel. Worship. Come. Let us sing to the Lord. With a joyful noise. To the rock. Of. Our.
[31:42] Salvation. May I give praise to God for us. He set a few thoughts. For us. Trimordo. A word of prayer. With God. Thank you. Lord.
