[0:00] Let's begin our worship of God by singing to his praise from Psalm number 21 in the Scottish Psalter. Psalm 21 at verse number 1, it's on page 225.

[0:15] Psalm 21, it's about praising God for God's King, who of course is our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Psalm 21 at verse 1.

[0:26] Psalm 21, the King in thy great strength, O Lord, shall very joyful be, and thy salvation rejoice, how vehemently shall he.

[0:37] From verse 1 to the verse 5, to God's praise. Psalm 21, it's about praising God for God's King, who of course is our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.

[0:51] His strength, O Lord, shall very joyful be, and thy salvation rejoice.

[1:13] Our dream and tree shall he. The Christ is stored upon him.

[1:33] All that's his heart, O Lord, shall we, and thou from him didst not withhold all that his lips did clear.

[2:02] For thou with blessings and prevents.

[2:13] Of goodness manifold. And thou hast set upon his head a crown of purest gold.

[2:43] When he decided life from thee, and thou hast to him didst not withhold all that his heart. The Christ is the Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. The Christ is the Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.

[2:57] To him didst not withhold all that his heart, O Lord, shall we, and thou hast to him. The Christ is the Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. The Christ is the Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. The Christ is the Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.

[3:09] Of days that he forever more should live.

[3:23] In thy salvation brought by thee, his glorious made great.

[3:42] Honor and God with majesty that passed upon himself.

[4:06] Let's unite our hearts in prayer. Almighty and most gracious God, we rejoice before you today.

[4:21] You have given us the right to address you as our own God. And we come to worship you and we marvel that this is so.

[4:33] That the world is full of reverences which show that you have given yourself to your people. That they are given themselves to you.

[4:46] And that you are their inheritance. As surely as they are your inheritance. We worship you, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

[4:56] For all that you are us, O God. And for all that you have come to mean to us. As we journey along life's way. We give thanks to you for your King.

[5:09] Your Son. We rejoice in him today. We have read, we have sung, we have praised your name. Because he is your King. Because he is your King. Because he is your Saviour.

[5:23] Because you are given life to him. And because whatever he asks of you, you will not withhold from him.

[5:34] And we worship you and we praise you. That your King is today our King. That you raised him up in glory. That you sat him at your right hand.

[5:48] And that today we gladly acknowledge him. As our King and as our Lord. And we pray that you will help us. In the depths of our beings today. To so humble ourselves before you.

[6:02] And find joy in you. As our God. Find joy in your Son. As our King. And find the peace that comes from knowing.

[6:13] That you are the God who in him and through him. Has brought us who are far from you. To be near to you. Who has brought us who were. Lost in this world.

[6:25] Into the family of God. And who has brought us out of darkness. Into your marvellous light. And into the kingdom of your dear Son.

[6:36] We worship you, O Lord our God, also. Because of the way in which your Holy Spirit works. In our hearts and in our lives. We marvel at what it means to be brought alive from the dead.

[6:51] The wonder of your grace. That we are alive in our hearts today before you. Because you brought us alive. Because you gave life to us. And because you gave that life to us.

[7:04] That is the same life that there is in your Son. And the breath that we breathe in our souls and our hearts today before you. We give thanks to you.

[7:15] That it is indeed Christ within us. The hope of glory. So bless us in our hearts anew today. To refresh us. To renew us. To give to us to rediscover the preciousness of Jesus.

[7:29] To rediscover this great love for us. To rediscover something more. Of what he has done in reconciling us to you.

[7:40] And to give to us also. To understand that our salvation is not yet complete. But to rejoice in you as the great God.

[7:51] Who not only gives grace. But to us promise also to give glory. And we pray you as surely as. Your promises in the Old Testament. Fuel the faith of your people.

[8:05] Bless us today with. A sense of. The greatness of your promises yet to be fulfilled. And fuel our faith by laying hold of them. And increase our hope.

[8:16] And increase our love. So that we may go on in a more. Determined and devoted way. As those who are indeed. The children of God. We bless you for every way in which.

[8:28] Your word speaks of all of these things to us. It is. The brightness of the shining of all that. There was in your heart and in your mind. And so bless us today as we.

[8:40] Focus upon your word. As we. Worship you from it. As we consider it together. May we be still. May we be at peace. And may we be unable to hear.

[8:51] What you are saying. We know that when in. Our minds to be clear. We know that. We need our minds to be rid of. There is so much that we carry. Out of this world.

[9:03] Into your presence. We know how much we need to be washed. And cleansed. And prepared by you. And we pray. Anew today. That you will bring us. To that place. Where our worship.

[9:14] Is indeed. A worship that we. Engage in together. But at the same time. A worship where. We are with you. And you are with us. And you are speaking to us.

[9:26] And we are listening to you. And doing so with joy. And thankfulness. And gladness. And so increasing. The praise of our hearts. We do give thanks to you. For all of. Your people here.

[9:37] Who have gathered. Who rejoice in you. And we rejoice with them. Because. Of your work in them. We bless you. And we praise you. For every way in which. You are working.

[9:47] In this community. In homes. And families. We give thanks to you. For all those. Who are able today. To profess their faith. In you. To whom you have given. That sense of.

[9:59] Belonging to you. By your saving grace. Encourage them all here today. Bless them richly. In their hearts. Strengthen them. Pull them up. And give them to.

[10:09] Know more and more. How great your love for them is. And give to them. That assurance. That comes alone. From the spirit of God. In their hearts. And that spirit.

[10:20] Witnessing with. Our inner beings. That we are the children of God. Give thanks to you also. For those who. Are faithful. Coming to listen to the gospel. Those who are not yet able to.

[10:33] Claim that they. Believe. Or that they have faith. Those. Who do not yet have confidence. To. Be able to say that. You are their God. And that Christ Jesus. Is their savior.

[10:45] Bless any such here today. Who. Are in that place. May all the knowledge. That they have. Of the word of God. May it descend. Into their hearts. Through your. Spirit.

[10:56] And by your grace. And to me. They come. To believe. In their hearts. The things. That they know. In their minds. And come. To have faith. In the Lord Jesus. And come.

[11:06] To find the joy. Of having peace. With you. Bless all. Of us. Who are gathered here. Before you. We do pray. Bless this community. We are sure. Like every other community.

[11:16] There are those. Who are in their homes. Today. And who have no. Care or concern. For the things of God. No care or concern. For the relationship. With you. Who are happy.

[11:27] In life. Without you. We pray. That you will reach out. To them. And that you will bless them. And that on this day. Of glory. And of power. This day. That marks the resurrection. Of your son from the dead.

[11:38] That it will be a day. When such people. Would sense your power. And the attraction. And the power of the cross. And the words of Jesus. When he said. That he.

[11:49] When he is. Lifted up. Would draw all people. To him. So draw those. Who are far from you. In this community. To yourself. Even today. If you have this moment in time. That you would speak into their hearts.

[12:01] And convict them. And convert them. And bring them to a knowledge. Of Jesus Christ. As saviour. Bless all our communities today. All our congregations. All of our people. As they are before you.

[12:13] And may you bless them. Be gracious to them. Remembering those. Who are frail and weak. Who are confined in their homes. Remembering those. Who are serious ill. We especially pray for them. And you would give strength to them.

[12:24] To bear. The seriousness of their illness. And all that comes with it. And pray your blessing also. Your comfort for those. Who mourn and grieve. May you be. Gracious to them. And give strength and comfort to them.

[12:35] Even today. And bless all such. Across the world today. In its pains and in its sorrows. Give people to know. That you are the true and living God. That you are the hearer of their cries.

[12:46] That you recognize the groanings of their hearts. And come with your power. And bless. And be gracious. And lift up those who are cast down. And keep safe those who may be in danger. And bring peace.

[12:57] For there is war or conflict. And cause your goodness. To shine forth. In the face and in the hearts. Of all the peoples over this earth. And give all the nations. And the peoples of this earth.

[13:08] To love the Lord their God. With all of their heart. And to love their neighbor. As themselves. So bless. We pray. As we commit ourselves to you now. Be near to us. As we continue before you.

[13:20] Blessing us. In the reading of your word. Blessing us in our study of it together. Guide us. Throughout the whole of the service. And keep us. With your peace we ask. For we ask all of these things.

[13:30] For Jesus sake. Amen. So now I'm going to turn to read the word of God. And we do so in the New Testament. And in the letter to Hebrews.

[13:43] Letter to Hebrews. And chapter number two. And we're going to read the whole of this chapter. Hebrews chapter two.

[13:58] And verse one. Let us hear the word of God. Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard.

[14:12] Lest we drift away from it. For since the message declared by angels proved to be reliable. And every transgression or disobedience. Received a just retribution.

[14:23] How shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation. It was declared at first by the Lord. And it was attested to us by those who heard. While God also bore witness.

[14:34] By signs and wonders. And various miracles. And by gifts. The Holy Spirit. Disributed according to his will. For it was not to angels that God subjected the world to come.

[14:45] Of which we are speaking. It has been testified somewhere. For this man that you are mindful of him. Or the son of man that you care for him. He made him for a little while lower than the angels.

[14:58] You have crowned him with glory and honor. Putting everything in subjection under his feet. Now in putting everything in subjection to him. He'll have nothing outside of his control.

[15:09] At present. We do not yet see everything in subjection to him. But we see him. Who for a little while. Was made lower than the angels. Namely Jesus.

[15:20] Crowned with glory and honor. Because of the suffering of death. So that by the grace of God. He might taste death for everyone. For it was fitting. That he. For whom and by whom all things exist.

[15:33] And bring many sons to glory. Should make the founder of their salvation. Perfect through suffering. For he who sanctifies. And those who are sanctified. All are one source.

[15:43] That is why he is not ashamed. To call them brothers. Saying. I will tell of your name to my brothers. In the midst of the connexation. I will praise you. And again.

[15:54] I will put my trust in him. And again. Behold I. And the children. God has given me. Since then. The children. I will tell you. Of flesh and blood. That he himself. Likewise.

[16:04] Partook of the same things. That through death. He might destroy. The one who has the power of death. That is the devil. And deliver all those. Who through fear of death. Were subject to lifelong slavery.

[16:16] For surely it is not angels. That he helps. But he helps the offspring of Abraham. Therefore he had to be made. Like his brothers. In every respect. So that he might become. A merciful and faithful high priest.

[16:28] In the service of God. To make propitiation. For the sins of the people. For because he himself. Has suffered when tempted. He is able to help those. Who are being.

[16:39] Tempted. Amen. This is the word of God. And we trust that he will bless to us. That reading from it. Now turn to praise God. From St. Psalms. And Psalm number 8.

[16:51] It is on page number 7. Psalm number 8. And at the beginning of the psalm. This is the psalm that is quoted.

[17:03] And referred to in the chapter. That we read at verse number 6. Psalm number 8. And verse number 1. In all the earth. O Lord.

[17:13] O Lord. How glorious is your name. For you have set above the heavens. Your glory. And your fame. And we sing it from verse 1. To the verse mark 5. To God's praise.

[17:29] In all the earth. O Lord. O Lord. O Lord. How glorious is your name.

[17:44] For you have set above the heavens. Your glory.

[17:56] And your fame. Amen. Amen. Amen. Come and sound from children's lips.

[18:10] You ordered praise to sound. You silence all your enemies.

[18:25] The wicked to confound. When I regard the heavens you made.

[18:41] Your fingers work I thrift. I see the moon.

[18:54] And trying stars. Which you have set in place.

[19:06] I ask myself. What men is mine. That you should give him thought.

[19:22] The son of man. That you to him. Such gracious king have brought.

[19:40] You made the grace. The grace of those. To dwell in heaven above.

[19:55] And you have sound. And honor to the way.

[20:06] Glory and with love. Amen. Amen. Amen.

[20:17] Let's turn together now to the letter to Hebrews. And chapter number 2. And we can read at verse 10. Hebrews 2 at verse 10. For it was fitting.

[20:32] That he. For whom and by whom all things exist. And bringing many sons to glory. Should make the founder of their salvation. Perfect through suffering.

[20:45] And so on. Now we reflected yesterday. On the way in which this letter. Was written for those.

[20:55] Whose needs were truly great. They weren't listening to God. The way that they should be. They didn't understand the person of Jesus. The way that they should. They weren't worshipping God.

[21:07] The way that they should be. And because of that. They were in danger of losing their faith. And so the writer. Writes his letter to them. In order to help them. And to recover them.

[21:18] To bring them out of the crisis. In which they had found themselves. And we saw yesterday. And we see at the. Beginning of the letter. In chapter number 1. The way in which.

[21:29] He uses the supremacy of the Lord Jesus. The Son of God. To remind them of who he is. To remind them of the work that he has done. And to enable them to.

[21:40] Correct their hearing. To enable them to worship as they should. To enable them to understand the Lord Jesus. And to enable them. To live a life that is appropriate.

[21:51] That suits the lives of the children of God. When we look at this chapter here. We see two interesting things. As we go to consider the verse that we read.

[22:02] And the surrounding verses. We see first of all. That God is bringing before them. A sense of the future. And we see that in verse number 5.

[22:15] Where he is speaking of the way in which. God subjected the world to come. He is reminding them. To think about the future.

[22:28] And to think about the world that is to come. And that is so important for us. As we go to look at these verses. That we are here today. In North Tolstair.

[22:39] To remember the death of the Lord. And we are going to do so. Not as those who are simply looking here. We are doing so. As those who firmly believe.

[22:50] That there is a world to come. To which we belong. And to which we are going. There is that necessity of the hope. That we have in our hearts. That it finds expression.

[23:02] And that we understand the goal that God has. For everything that he has done. To bring us into that new heavens. And that new earth. And along with that.

[23:14] He wants them to understand. God's purpose at the very beginning. And we see that from the quotation that we have. From verse 5 downwards. The quotation from Psalm number 8.

[23:26] And what we see there. Is the mission of God for the world. And we see God as creator. We see that he has made man. And we see that he has purposed.

[23:38] To place man in the world. To put everything in subjection. Under his feet. And to do so. And also crown him with glory. And when I read Genesis 1 and 2.

[23:50] That's exactly what Genesis 1 and 2 says. That the created humankind. Human beings. That they are destined for that place. Where they will have everything under their feet.

[24:02] And that's what God said to Adam. In Genesis 1 verse 28. Be fruitful and multiply. And fill the earth. And subdue it. And have dominion over it.

[24:15] And so we read Psalm 8. And we read it into Genesis 1 and 2. And we see that God's purpose is. To have humankind glorified in the world.

[24:28] And having the world under his feet. And doing so in the purpose of God. And then again. We remind ourselves. Not only that. There is this great goal.

[24:39] But that it is a goal. Which accomplishes what God has purposed to do. And will at last bring us. To stand on the new heavens. And the new earth. And understand what God said to Adam.

[24:53] And rejoice that. Through all of these steps that he took. That he has brought us. To that place of glory. And against that. Back and we want to. To look at the verses that we have here.

[25:06] And to. Look as we did yesterday. Thinking of some of the names and titles. That Jesus has in this letter. To think here of. God's design. And Jesus as.

[25:18] The founder. Or the pioneer. Of our salvation. One. To think first of all. Of a. Panorama. Let's.

[25:30] Use our minds. Let's. Select our imagination. In a good and profitable way. Let's think of the picture. That we have here. And when we do so.

[25:41] In this picture. We see something. That's not yet through. We do understand. What God's purpose is. But there is something. Vital.

[25:51] Missing. And that's what we have. In verse number eight. And putting everything. In subjection to him. He left nothing. Outside his control. At present.

[26:02] We do not yet. See everything. In subjection. To him. There is. A delay. There is. A situation. That exists currently.

[26:15] That does not correspond. To what God has purpose to do. But it is. The reality. We are not yet. What we will be. We are not yet. Where we are going.

[26:26] That's the reality. And. We hardly need. To remind ourselves. Of that. If we have faith. In the Lord Jesus. The stark reality.

[26:38] Every day. We are not yet. What God has. Made us to be. We are not yet. What we desire to be. It's the stark reality. And here.

[26:49] The writer. Brings them. Face to face. With that. Why are things. The way they are. Because. God's work. Is not yet. Complete. There is something.

[26:59] That yet. Needs. To be done. And that. That. Reality. That is not yet. Is. To have everything. Under subjection. Subjection.

[27:10] Of humankind. To have. The Genesis 1. Fulfilled. At last. In the experience. Of. God's. Saved. People.

[27:21] To have everything. Arranged. In order. In the confusion. That we see. In the world. That we understand. That God's order. Is not yet. In place.

[27:32] That it is. So disrupted. The world. Is so chaotic. We are face to face. With that. In our own hearts. We are face to face. With it. In the world.

[27:42] Around us. There is. The not yet. In the panorama. In the picture. But he wants them. To look closely.

[27:56] We do not yet. See everything. In subjection to him. But we see him. There is someone. In the center. Of the picture. In the panorama.

[28:07] We see him. Our eyes. Are taken up. With him. Our minds. Are captivated. By him. We look at him. And. And.

[28:18] As we look at him. We begin to experience. Something about him. There is something. About this figure. In the center. Of this picture. That captivates. Our attention. That draws.

[28:28] Our hearts. Away. Away. And the moment. That we are. Thrown away. In this way. There is a spectacle. That we want.

[28:39] To be absorbed. With and in. And what does he see? We see him. Namely. Jesus. Who do we want.

[28:51] To see today. In this time. Of worship. In this time. Of celebrating. The death. Of the Lord. Lord. We came in here. To worship God. And we wanted.

[29:02] To see Jesus. And the Bible here. God wants us today. To look at this picture. That is developing. And that God is developing. And painting in the world.

[29:13] And to look. And to see. That there. In the center. Of the picture. Is Jesus. The Jesus. Of Nazareth. The Jesus.

[29:25] Of the manger. The Jesus. Concerning. Whom. Matthew wrote. On the Mount. Of Transfiguration. In all of.

[29:37] The glory. That they saw. And all of the things. That they heard. Suddenly. Things changed. And. And God. Moved them on. And then. They saw no one.

[29:48] But Jesus only. And that's where God. Is bringing us today. To see no one. But Jesus only. And to consider him.

[30:00] And to keep our eyes. Upon him. And in your heart today. You will know. If that is significant. Or not. You will be able to.

[30:11] Understand. Whether. He is precious to you. Or not. And whether. You can be. Easy. Distracted. In this very moment. And lose sight of this. Central.

[30:22] Spectacle. This passion. In the picture. That God is painting. In the course of this world. We see nothing. But Jesus. Only.

[30:35] And why. In this panorama. Is Jesus. Why is he so special. Because. For.

[30:47] For. A little while. While he was made. Lower. Than the angels. So that by the grace of God. He might taste death.

[30:57] For everyone. For a little while. What does that tell us? It tells us. That there was something before.

[31:08] Before. And it tells us. There was. There is something after. And. The. Something that was before. Is. That the son of God. And.

[31:19] In all of the. All of his glory. Was dwelling in the glory of God. And in the glory of heaven. In the glory of heaven. In the glory of heaven. But yet. For a little while. As Adam was made.

[31:31] Lower than the angels. In the garden of Eden. Jesus. The son of God. Was made. A little lower. Than the angels.

[31:43] For a little while. You see the picture developing. It's like. A movie. That's. Going from one scene. To the next. And when.

[31:54] I see Jesus. I'm. Reminded of the previous scene. Where. Where the son of God. Is in all of his glory. And. I see him now. Present in the world.

[32:05] For a little while. So that. By the grace of God. The grace that. Is in the heart of God. To reach out to. To you. And to me. The moment of God.

[32:17] To reach. To help the helpless. And to bring about. Joy. And well being. Into your heart. And. Today.

[32:27] The Bible. Is telling us. God is telling us. That for that to happen. There is a prerequisite. There is a step. That needs to be there. First. And that is. That by the grace.

[32:39] Of God. Jesus. Might taste. Death. For everyone. God. We are here today.

[32:50] By the grace of God. To taste the life. And the goodness. Of the kingdom of God. To taste the bread of life. To be satisfied. With the riches of. The kingdom of God.

[33:02] And all that Jesus. Prepared for us. In the gospel. But for him. Who was. Full of grace. And full of truth. Death. He is the one.

[33:14] Who came. To taste death. To experience. Something.

[33:26] And. Let's not. In any way. Dismiss. What happened to Jesus. Let's not. In any way. Diminish. What he went through. You and I.

[33:39] Can taste something. And. If we don't like it. We can spit it out. It's not for us. We'll move on. To something else. But not so. With Jesus. He came to.

[33:50] To taste death. He came to. Partake in it. Fully. He came to. Experience it. He came to.

[34:00] Learn it. From his own experience. He came to. An inward. Experience. And awareness. Of what death. Really is. That by the grace. Of God. He might taste death.

[34:12] For everyone. The death. Which is the penalty. Of sin. The death. To which Adam. Was condemned. When he was sent.

[34:23] Out of the garden. The death. Concerning. Paul. Wrote in. First. And second. Timothy. He abolished death.

[34:33] Death. And he brought. Life. And immortality. Through light. Through the gospel. That he might. Taste death. That he might. Abolish death. Nullify it.

[34:44] Bring it to nothing. Rub it of its power. So that the day. Will come. When. When Paul speaks. In first Corinthians. Fifteen. Death. Is swallowed up.

[34:55] In victory. Why is that? It is because. We see the death. Of death.

[35:07] And the death. Of Jesus. That on Calvary's cross. He swallowed it up. And when we come to the end of this chapter itself. We see the.

[35:19] The reason why he came. That through death. Death. He might destroy the one who has the power of death. That is the devil.

[35:30] And deliver all those who. Through fear of death. Were subject to lifelong. Slavery. He tasted death.

[35:41] He swallowed death. He experienced death. And in that experience of death. It was for you and for me to deliver us. From the slavery.

[35:55] Of being. Afraid of death. And so we should be. The death that is the penalty of sin. That in this panorama.

[36:07] We see Jesus. And today. This is the basis. And the measure. Of our faith.

[36:17] That we see. That by the grace of God. Jesus came into the world. That for a little while. He was here. And in that little while.

[36:29] To achieve something. That was life changing. That was direction changing. And that was the means of. Bringing everything. And realigning everything.

[36:40] With the purpose. Of God. The panorama. We do not yet see. The glory. But we see Jesus.

[36:51] And we see the death. Of Jesus. Secondly. As we move on from the panorama. We think of. Of the progression.

[37:02] That. That we see in this passage. And in this moving picture. That we have. We see Jesus. Him.

[37:14] Crowned with. Glory and. Honor. His suffering. His death was. For a little while. And today.

[37:27] In this moving picture. He. The writer. Casts his eyes. To where Jesus. Now is. He came. From glory.

[37:38] He descended. Into death. But now. He is. Crowned. He is. Crowned. With glory. And honor. The crown.

[37:49] That was given. In the public games. For. For the patient. Who. Was the victor. Who had triumphed. Being adorned. With. With. The crown. That was. Made up. Of different things.

[37:59] Of flowers. Perhaps. The crown. That showed. That this. Person. Had. Had run. The race. And that. Funnily. The person. Was a victor. The crown.

[38:10] That was. Wore. In the. In the. Pagan. Temples. When. When they. Were. In to. Worship. God. If they. Had any. Public. Rule. They. Had the crown. But also.

[38:22] The crown. Of. Kingship. God. Says. To us. In. Psalm. Number 2. And says. To. To the kingdoms.

[38:32] Of the world. I. Have. Set. My. King. Upon. Sion. My. Holy. Hill. Today. My. Son. Today.

[38:43] I. Have. Begotten. You. And. In. That. Today. Of. Of. The. Way. Which. The. Father. Addresses. His. Son. He. Is. Crowned. He.

[38:53] Is. Made. King. And. He. Sits. Down. At. God's. Right. Hand. And. There. He. Is. Crowned.

[39:03] With. Glory. And. Crowned. With. Honor. There. Is. A. Radiance. About. Him. There.

[39:14] Is. A. Shining. From. Him. That. Speaks. Not. Only. Of. His. Beauty. But. Of. The. The. Weightiness. Of. His. Passion. That.

[39:24] He. Is. A. Figure. In. God's. Plan. That. Is. Of. Supreme. Importance. And. The. The. Glory. That. He. Has. Is. Because.

[41:02] Why. Was. He. Crowned. With. Glory. And. Honor. He. Deserves. Glory. Because. Of. Who. He. Was. The. Son. Of. God. The. All. Glorious.

[41:13] One. But. He. Was. Crowned. As. A. Reward. Because.

[41:24] Says. The. Writer. Because. Of. The. Suffering. Of. Death. All. That. He. Endured.

[41:35] The. Suffering. That. That. Speaks. To. Us. Of. What. Came. Upon. Jesus. From. Outside. Of. Himself. And. What. Impacted. His. Inner. Being. In.

[41:46] Such. A. Way. As. To. Impacted. And. Affected. Him. In. Such. A. Negative. Way. Because. Of. The. Things. That. Assailed. Him. From. Outside. And. The. Things. That. He.

[41:56] Suffered. What. Suffering. At. The. Hands. Of. God. Himself. That. He. Endured. The. Wrath. Of. God. And. That. Also.

[42:06] He. Endured. The. Assault. That. All. Of. These. Phishers. Closed.

[42:17] In. Upon. Him. In. His. Suffering. Affecting. Him. Christ. Must. Suffer. All. Of. These. Things. And. Enter. Into. Glory. And.

[42:29] Of. Course. Although. He. He. Suffered. Much. Throughout. The. Whole. Of. His. Life. It's. Because. Of. The. Suffering. Of. Death. That.

[42:42] In. The. Darkness. Of. Golgotha. When. He. Cried. My. God. My. God. Why. Have. You. Forsaken. Me.

[43:50] He. Gave. Himself. To. God. And. As. To. Read. About. His. Resurrection. He. Was. Raised. By. God. Because. Death. Was. Not. Able.

[58:17] Thank you.

[58:29] Bye. Hope. Move.

[58:43] Christ is in the same love of great delight, of strong and modest.

[59:01] He kissed the purest sea bush, durchs that till last foray.

[59:21] Be lifted up, that soul of King of glory, enter me.

[59:36] But who is the seed that is the King of glory, who is this?

[59:54] The marble post, and now that we, the King of glory is.

[60:12] Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

[60:30] Alleluia. Amen. Amen. Amen.

[60:50] Amen. We have it here.

[61:22] Now Moses was faithful in all God's house as a servant to testify to the things that were to be spoken later. But Christ is faithful over God's house as a son.

[61:34] And we are his house if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope. We gather to remember the Lord's death until his return.

[61:52] Remembering in the Bible is a wonderful thing. And I'm sure remembering in any kind of sense is wonderful. But in the Bible we have the sense of remembering in a way through which we bring what has happened in the past.

[62:06] To be alive in our minds as if it was happening for the first time again. It's kind of reliving the past.

[62:18] It's remembering. And God remembered his people and he heard their groanings and he remembered his covenant. And he moved into action to save them. Remembering is a wonderful thing.

[62:30] If we can do that at the Lord's table today to remember the death of the Lord as if it were happening now. To have that sense of the reality.

[62:41] The significance. The centrality of Jesus dying for our sins. And as we go to remember we want to think of who should be at the table.

[62:54] There are so many characteristics that we could raise concerning those who should be at the table. And there are four that I want to raise very briefly.

[63:06] And the first one of these is. Today if you're not a sinner you shouldn't be at the table. And so often we think that our sinnership disqualifies us from being at the table.

[63:22] When the reality is that we come to remember the death of the Lord Jesus because he died for sinners. Now we come to remember his death.

[63:34] Don't let us in any way today think that because of the sin we discover in our hearts that we shouldn't be at the Lord's table. Remember that Jesus sent his spirit into the world to comfort his people.

[63:50] And he said to them that the Holy Spirit would convict them. And the first thing the Holy Spirit was going to convict them of was the sin that was in their hearts.

[64:04] And the sin that they did not believe in him. We come to the Lord's table as sinners. And as John says in his letter if we say we have no sin then the truth is not in us.

[64:20] And today if you are not at the table because you are a sinner then you are in the wrong place because the table is for sinners. That truly understand their sinnership.

[64:34] The second thing is of course that there must be conversion. There must be a turning around in life. There must be a change of heart with regard to sin.

[64:48] There must be a new direction. There must be a focus in life. And the Bible describes it as godly sorrow works repentance.

[65:00] We are sinners and we see our sin. But we see our sin the way that God sees it. And because of that we turn away from it with hatred.

[65:10] And we turn to the God who has promised to us that if we confess our sins. He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins.

[65:21] There must be conversion. Sinnership on its own does not qualify us. But sinnership with conversion and with repentance and with turning to Jesus is exactly what we need.

[65:37] Because then we understand who we are. We understand what God has done. We understand the law of God. And we understand the love of God. And we come to the Lord's table.

[65:51] We come because of conversion. Because God has worked in our lives to turn us around. And to give us to understand what sin is and what he has done with our sin.

[66:04] And the third thing is that we know we are the children of God. And sometimes we shy away from firmly saying that.

[66:18] We believe in our hearts but we may think that it is a step too far to claim that for ourselves. And yet those who are sinners who are converted.

[66:29] They are before us in the Bible. And the Bible tells us that God has given us his spirit in our hearts. And in all of the ways in which that new life works in our hearts.

[66:42] It is that spirit of God which in our prayer gives expression to the relationship. We cry Abba Father. And it is that spirit of God that witnesses with our inner beings that we are the children of God.

[66:58] And sometimes and perhaps even now. What we need to do most is to listen to the voice of the spirit of God through the word of God.

[67:12] And to silence the way that we speak to ourselves. How wrong we are so often. Judging ourselves. And that God doesn't judge us. Let us today as we come to the Lord's table.

[67:27] Recognize that we are the children of God. And allow the witness of the word of God. Silence all the doubtings. And silence all the fears.

[67:40] And give us to be settled. That we know this is God's family table. That we belong to the household of God. And that here is where we should be. And here is where we want to be.

[67:53] And finally. There is conformity. God's plan is that. He calls us. And he justifies us.

[68:06] He adopts us. He does all of these things. So that we will be changed into the image of his son the Lord Jesus. It's a tall order.

[68:20] But it is a conformity. That's not first of all based on the things that we do. It's a conformity that's based on who we are.

[68:32] And if we are incorporated into the person of Jesus as those who are members of his body. Then the conformity will be there.

[68:45] And sometimes we will, humanly speaking, stand in its way. But if we are the children of God today. We cannot. As John says in his epistles.

[68:55] We cannot live practicing sin all the days of our lives. It's simply unnatural. Because of the life of Jesus in us. We are conformed.

[69:08] Our lives are devoted to him. And in all of our failings. There is the confession that restores. And the forgiveness that restores. So that our lives are constantly gravitating.

[69:23] Towards likeness for Jesus. And as we follow him. The more we follow him. The more liken we become. And may God encourage us in our hearts.

[69:33] As we come to this table. To reflect on these things. On our sinnership. On our sins being forgiven. Because of what Christ has done. On knowing that we are the children of God.

[69:46] And despite how much we see our failings. To recognize. The life of Jesus. Is the life that is in our hearts. And that because of that. We are being changed.

[69:58] And we will be changed. And as we meditate upon these things. As we prepare to take our place at the Lord's table. We want to sing once more. And we sing this time from. Psalm number 118.

[70:10] In the Scottish Psalter. On page 398. Psalm 118. On page 398. And we are singing at verse 15. In dwellings.

[70:30] Of the righteous. Of the righteous. Is heard the melody. Of joy and health. The Lord's right hand. Doth ever valiantly. And we'll sing at least down to the verse 21.

[70:41] To God's praise. In dwellings. In dwellings. Of the righteous.

[70:55] Under are orange NYU. By God's right hand. In dwellings. In dwellings. Of the righteous. In dwellings.

[71:16] In dwellings. The bright hand of the mighty Lord Exalted is on high The bright hand of the mighty Lord Doth ever valiant leave I shall not die but live and shall The works of God discover

[72:19] The Lord hath me Just I said so But not to let me go O set ye open up to me The gifts of righteousness Then will I enter into Him And I, the Lord, will bless The sins that He's gone

[73:26] Of God by His death Of God's death And He will When I pray For God He hurts And Thou Thou Thou Thou Thou Thou Thou We'll now read our warrant for the sacrament of the Lord's Supper As we have such in 1 Corinthians chapter 11 and at verse number 23 Let us hear the word of God For I received from the Lord What I also deliver to you That the Lord Jesus on the night when He was betrayed Took bread And when He had given thanks He broke it and said This is my body Which is for you

[74:28] Do this in remembrance of me And the same way also He took the cup after supper saying This cup is a new covenant in my blood Do this as often as you drink it In remembrance of me For as often as you eat this bread And drink the cup You proclaim the Lord's death Until He comes And we read that On that night that the Lord Jesus had given thanks And we follow this example And we bow our heads in a word of prayer We come to you, O Lord of God In this moment of remembering And giving obedience to your command To remember your death until you return We come following the example of the New Testament church We come following the words that proceeded From your mouth as our Saviour And as we come we reflect upon The first institution of the sacrament When you as the Son of God

[75:31] The Son of God Prepared to go to Calvary's cross And did so And when doing so Was so interested in the well-being of your disciples That you left for them And prepared for them And instituted for them A sacrament which was To be for their own strengthening in the days to come And to be for the strengthening of your church in the world In every generation And we do give thanks to you For every observance of the sacrament And we bless and praise your name For the love of which it speaks For the sacrifice that is at the centre of it For the price that was paid And for the security that is now ours Because we are reconciled to you By the death of your Son So bless us in this moment As we come to remember And pray that you will bring everything to Be fresh and new in our minds

[76:35] That you might find our joy in you Our gladness and our satisfaction And for the duration of this sacrament May you set apart this bread and this wine For this holy use And may it be And may it be In the hand of your Holy Spirit The means of Feeding us and of nourishing us That you may Eat it in our mouths But also Eat it by faith in our hearts And to know our strengthening From you and through it At this time together So hear our prayer And what's yours in your mercy as we Commit ourselves to you Accepting us we pray For Jesus' sake Amen So we are coming to remember And as we grew our attention to In the fencing of the Lord's table We remember in such a way As to bring things into our minds And to kind of relive in a way The things that God has done for us And at the table today I want us to think of Two biblical words

[77:37] That will help us I hope understand Why we are here And where we are going And the first of these words Is the word Exodus It's a word that simply means The way out And for ourselves At the very centre of what we are celebrating There is a way out And I want us to think of that way out In two particular ways First of all We read in Luke chapter 9 When Jesus went to the Mount of Transfiguration And Moses and Elijah Were there talking with them We read that They spoke of the Exodus That he was going to accomplish in Jerusalem The Moses of the Exodus The Elijah of the later Exodus Were discussing the death of Jesus And the Exodus he was going to accomplish in his death And when we read the New Testament And we understand what that Exodus means

[78:40] We read that Paul is saying In 1 Corinthians chapter 5 That Christ Our Passover lamb is sacrificed for us There is an Exodus Jesus Redeems us from the curse of the low He was made a curse for us We are reconciled to God And God made him to be sin To be sin Who knew no sin That we might be the righteousness of God And today we come to remember the death of the Lord And we remember that great Exodus On the cross at Golgotha Where the Son of God Went into the darkness of that forsakenness In order to bring about the great Exodus The great exodus from death itself The great resurrection And his exaltation And we cannot remember the Lord's death Without remembering that Exodus Because it is an Exodus that was brought about By his death and because of his blood

[79:44] But there is a second Exodus And it is the Exodus that has to do with Our personal experience And we read in the New Testament In different ways And we are reminded that God has delivered us from The domain of darkness We read that God has transferred us into The kingdom of his dear Son We read that God has called us out of darkness And put us into his marvellous light And we read that John tells us that we are passed from death into life The whole conversion is one of Exodus If anyone is in Christ He is a new creation All things have passed away All things have become new And this Exodus which is personal In our hearts and in our experience It is connected of course to the Exodus that Jesus experienced By the grace of God And there is that line that flows From the very heart of God

[80:47] To the love of God Revealed on Calvary's cross And to the love of God That we sense in our hearts today As we remember the death of the Lord Jesus And able to say with Paul That he has died But nevertheless I live Yet not I But Christ lives in me A marvellous Movement of God Taking us out of our sin In the death of Christ And in the day of our new birth Bring us to where we are today That we can surely Remember his death With understanding Wishing of course that we understood more But doing with a sense of appreciation Of all that God has done May God help us To remember These two Exodus And if we do so Then our remembering of the death of the Lord Jesus Will be truly Meaningful We read In the night that the Lord Jesus Was betrayed that he took bread

[81:49] And after he broke it And said This is my body which is given for you This do in remembrance of me In the same manner also The cup After supper saying This cup is a new covenant in my blood Do this as often as you drink it In remembrance of me For as often as you eat this bread And drink this cup You do show the Lord's death Till he come With love The In mí The outward Don't Thank you.

[83:15] Thank you.

[83:45] Thank you.

[84:15] Thank you.

[84:45] Thank you.

[85:15] Thank you.

[85:45] Thank you.

[86:15] Thank you.

[86:45] Thank you.

[87:15] Thank you.

[87:45] Thank you.

[88:15] Thank you.

[88:45] Thank you.

[89:15] Thank you.

[89:45] Thank you.

[90:15] Thank you.

[90:45] And in this letter itself, they're not where they want to be.

[91:45] We are elect exiles.

[92:15] of the multitudes and fulfillment of the promise given to Abraham.

[92:51] Who are these and where have they come from? They are come out of the great tribulation and they are washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. And there in that moment, on that occasion they are led by the shepherd into fountains of living water and God wipes away all tears from their eyes.

[93:16] In our exile we shed our tears. Tears of sorrow for sin. Tears of sorrow for the pains that we endure. Tears for sorrow because of the way we are ourselves and the way the world is.

[93:29] But here is the day of our hope. That God will wipe away all tears out of our eyes. And that whether we cry tears of joy or not, the tears of sorrow and sadness will be gone forevermore.

[93:44] So let's rejoice in the fact that we are here because of Exodus. But let's not forget that we are here as exiles and that we remember the Lord's death until his return.

[93:57] And that he has gone to prepare a place for us. And in accordance with his word and promise he will come again and receive us to be forever more with himself. May God bless to us our being here and we'll be able to give thanks to God as we sing from Psalm 103.

[94:13] Give thanks to him for his goodness, for his grace, for his forgiveness and for all that he has done for us in the death and in the resurrection and the exaltation of the Lord Jesus.

[94:24] In Psalm 103, at the beginning of the psalm, we sing from verse 1 to the verse 4, O thou, my soul, bless God the Lord and all that in me is who stirred up his holy name to magnify and bless.

[94:38] From verse 1 to verse 4 to God's praise. Amen. Let's go, my soul, the Lord thy God and not forget for thee.

[95:38] Of all his precious benefits he hath restored on thee.

[95:55] For thy name вам who want luke The Lord thy grace The Lord whom Dort Slytherin and put him the presence of allweh The Lord For thy gifts He sees God, He'll plow me freely.

[96:32] Who shall bring in thy life Thou thou to death is not or die?

[96:50] To thee with love in thine nest O untender mercy strown.

[97:12] Now before we pray, I would just like to say a word to those who are not at the table. I want to sincerely thank you for being here today.

[97:24] I believe that God is pleased that you're here also, that you have come to worship Him. But I don't want you to leave here without realizing and without remembering what has taken place today.

[97:38] And to help you to do so, I want to read two verses at the beginning of the chapter that we read before ourselves today, or in ourselves today. Hear these words.

[97:49] Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it. For since the message declared by angels proved to be reliable, and every transgression or disobedience received a just resolution, how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation?

[98:08] It was declared first by the Lord, and was attested to us by those who heard, where God also bore witness by signs and wonders, and various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit distribute according to His will.

[98:24] How shall you escape if you neglect such a great salvation? I encourage you today to reflect on where Jesus is in the Bible, at the center of God's story, and to reflect on whether that place that Jesus deserves in your life is actually filled by Him.

[98:45] Or are you able today to carry on coming to church, and to carry on learning about the Bible, yet still not have a place for Jesus in your heart? I plead with you, and I pray for you, that God will help you to have Jesus in your heart where He deserves to be, so that you will honor Him, and that you will recognize Him for who He is, and therefore give glory to God by doing so, and find joy and hope in your own heart for today and for the days that are to come.

[99:14] May God bless you all. We bow our heads in a short word of prayer. Most gracious God, we are thankful for how close you have come to us.

[99:25] Help us to realize in this moment of worship and of sacrament, that you are with us, that you are present by the power of your Spirit, and that there is nothing less than the only true and living God here with us in this place.

[99:42] And may that impact upon our hearts. May it fill our minds with fear and with awe, and with wonder and with worship, and may it awaken us and alert us to the urgency of the need that we have to learn about you at first, to learn more about you, to be changed, to be like your Son, and to live a life that is pleasing to you as we journey on for our own little while in this world together.

[100:11] Bless us, we ask, and accept our thanks for all that you privileged us with throughout the whole of this service together. Go before us, we pray for Jesus' sake. Amen.

[100:21] So I want to conclude now by singing Psalm 72 to lift the name of God and the name of the Lord Jesus, and to do so by singing the last three verses of Psalm 72.

[100:39] And verse 17. His name forever shall endure, last like the Son it shall, when shall be blessed with him, and blessed all nations shall him call.

[100:50] To the end of the psalm, to God's praise. Amen. In him not blessed, storm nations shall him call.

[101:32] But blessed be the Lord, that God of his life, for he is the Lord, for he is the Lord, that God of his works, in glory that he shall.

[102:09] and blessed be the Lord, and blessed be the Lord, his glorious name, to all eternity.

[102:26] His送ледioso unto the Lord, Amen, so Wol partout.

[102:44] Now may the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God the Father, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all now and forevermore.

[102:58] Amen. Amen.
