[0:00] To the book of Joshua at chapter 1. But I'm actually going to start my reading in Deuteronomy 34 at verse 9 because it's relevant.
[0:24] Deuteronomy 34 at verse 9. Joshua, the son of Nun, was full of the spirit of wisdom. For Moses had laid his hands on him, so that the people of Israel obeyed him and did as the Lord commanded Moses.
[0:41] And there has not arisen a prophet since in Israel like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face. None like him for all the signs and wonders that the Lord sent him to do in the land of Egypt to Pharaoh.
[0:56] To all his servants, to all the land. And for all the mighty power and all the great deeds of terror that Moses did in the sight of Israel.
[1:08] And then into Joshua 1. After the death of Moses, the servant of the Lord, the Lord said to Joshua, the son of Nun, Moses' assistant.
[1:20] Moses, my servant is dead. Now therefore, arise and go over this Jordan. And now, you and all this people, into the land that I am giving them.
[1:35] To the people of Israel, every place that the soul of your fruit will tread upon, I have given to you. Just as I promised to Moses. From the wilderness and this Lebanon, as far as the great river, the river Euphrates.
[1:50] All the land of the Hittites to the great sea, going down towards the sun, shall be your territory. No man shall be able to stand before you. All the days of your life, just as I was with Moses.
[2:05] So I will be with you. I will not leave you or forsake you. Be strong and courageous. For you shall cause this people to inherit the land I swore to their fathers to give them.
[2:17] Only be strong and very courageous. Be careful to do according to all the law. That Moses, my servant, commanded you.
[2:29] Do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left. That you may have good success wherever you go. This book of the law shall not depart out of your mouth.
[2:42] But you shall meditate on it day and night. So that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous. And then you shall have good success.
[2:56] Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened. Do not be dismayed. For the Lord your God is with you.
[3:08] Wherever you go. And God will bless his word to us. We will continue to worship God by singing to his praise.
[3:19] Page 236 and Psalm 27. Verses 1 to 6. The Lord's my light and saving health who shall make me dismayed.
[3:33] My life strength is the Lord of whom then shall I be afraid. Down to the end of verse 6. And now even at this present time. My head shall lifted be above all those that are my foes.
[3:46] And round encompass me. These verses to God's praise. The Lord of whom then shall I be afraid.
[4:19] Reagua. The Lord of whom then shall I be. Loongutz- crimson, bowing away. God is with me.
[4:43] Thank you.
[5:13] Thank you.
[5:43] Thank you. Thank you.
[6:43] Thank you. Thank you.
[7:43] Thank you. Thank you.
[8:15] Lord, our Father, we need your help. Lord, we need you to open our eyes, Lord, to your word.
[8:28] And help us, Lord, as we look at it together. Lord, we are poor and needy. And Lord, without you, we can do nothing.
[8:40] So help us, we pray, Lord, for Jesus' sake. Amen. Amen. In his own day, Moses was a legend.
[8:54] And he was really a hard act to follow. Now, Moses was, as it says there, there was none like him.
[9:06] Before him or after him, that was able to speak to the Lord face to face. And the Lord brought Moses to that place where he had the heart of Jesus, where he had the compassion in his heart when God wanted him to wipe them off the face of the earth and start afresh with Moses.
[9:35] And here we come into Joshua. It's a transition period. And for somebody else taking over from Moses, it must have been really hard.
[9:53] And it says there now, after the death of Moses, the Lord, Moses, the servant of the Lord, that it came to pass that the Lord spoke to Joshua.
[10:05] Moses' minister or Moses' assistant or servant, however, it's in your versions, saying, Moses, my servant is dead. And death brings a lot of things with it into a home and into a family.
[10:24] It brings sorrow and sadness, a sense of loss, a sense of anxiety. And we always have that question when we lose somebody or something.
[10:42] What now? What are we going to do? Where are we going to turn to? Forty years had passed since they had left Egypt.
[10:55] And they were only on the border of the promised land. They were on the east side of the Jordan River. And that was as far as they went.
[11:08] Because of unbelief and disobedience. You probably remember the story of when they sent the spies out. Twelve of them.
[11:20] And they all came back and they gave the reports. And they said, we can't do it. The people of the land are far too big. We can't manage it.
[11:30] They were focused not on God. They were focused on the giants of the land. And only two came back with a favorable report. Joshua, this man.
[11:43] The son of Hoshia, the son of Nun. Who Moses renamed Joshua. They had a favorable report. They said, we are well able to take this land.
[11:56] We are well able. And the reason that they were well able to take it was because they weren't focused on the difficulties. Their eyes were focused on the God that they worshipped.
[12:07] The God who had brought them away from the captivity of Egypt. And who led them through that wilderness all that way. But because of their unbelief.
[12:20] God swore in his wrath that he would not let them in. And they didn't enter in because of unbelief. They wouldn't trust God.
[12:30] You know, my friends, tonight the same is true for us. If we won't trust God. Then we won't enter in either.
[12:42] Because of unbelief. Because God has sent heaven's best. To pay the price for sin. For each one of us.
[12:55] It says there in Hebrews, without faith. It's impossible to please him. And these, the people, the children, had all the signs.
[13:06] They had all the wonders. They had seen that everything God had done for them. And they still wouldn't believe. And you know, that's the way it is with some of us.
[13:21] We've seen what God has done. We're not blind. When we look round. We hear stories about the Big Bang. When I hear somebody talking about the Big Bang and all that.
[13:35] I think it's a joke. It's not possible. If I gave you a Rolex watch and said, throw it in the air and see if it will come together.
[13:46] That's impossible. The same way as this creation that we live in is impossible. It's not. There's a creator behind it. And that's more believable to me.
[13:59] Than any of the other fairy tale stories that people come up with. In our day and generation. They didn't believe.
[14:13] And they couldn't get in. And you know, Moses was, by this stage in his life, he was 120 years old. And it says there that his eye was not dim, not as natural for the beast.
[14:28] He still had his strength and his power. But God in his graciousness. Although he didn't let Moses in. He took him up to the top of that mountain, Pisgah.
[14:43] And he showed him north, south, east and west. The whole of the area. That they were going to inherit. He had been a leader and a judge.
[14:56] And a guide for all these years for them. And now for them, he is dead. He is dead. And you know, death.
[15:10] My friends will come to us all. Doesn't matter how strong we are. Or how able we are. Or how fit we are. Death is certain.
[15:23] And you know that it's one appointment. That not one of us will ever miss. We can make appointments with doctors. We can make appointments with dentists. We can go and get our hair done.
[15:34] We can get this done. Nothing. We can. And if we don't feel like it, we can cancel it. But this is one appointment. That not one of us will ever cancel.
[15:46] Because God is sovereign. And when he calls time. We will respond. Makes no matter who you are.
[15:59] We will respond. Even the most useful of us. We're not indispensable.
[16:11] We're not indispensable. Because when God calls. They will answer. And they are at the most important point.
[16:23] Probably in the history of children of Israel. They're leaderless. They haven't got somebody like Moses. Who would intercede with God for them.
[16:37] And who would lead them and guide them. On the way they're bereft of a leader. As well as sorrow. They felt uncertainty and anxiety.
[16:48] What's the future holding for us now? They will be saying. Moses is dead. But God lives.
[17:04] God is from everlasting to everlasting. And nothing will ever change that. And you know. Great men come.
[17:14] And great men go. But the man. The one who made them great. Is still on the throne. And when you look around the world tonight.
[17:27] You thank God. That is not Vladimir Putin. It's not Joe Biden.
[17:40] It's not Hamas. And it isn't Hamas. I use it. Or Nikola. Vishi Sunak. That's running. That's in full command.
[17:56] God is in command. And he's still on his throne. And nothing will unseat him. Nothing will unseat him. He's still in control.
[18:06] And I thank God for that tonight. That he's still in charge. I didn't think I would be able to come down here tonight to speak.
[18:20] Tuesday morning. I phone my friend Robert. And I says. Robert. I don't think I'll manage this. But I think the devil's attacking. And if I can.
[18:30] I'm going to do it. And today. The coughing wasn't so bad. I've had a cough or two. But nothing. Nothing severe.
[18:43] And I believe God. Is able to help us. And he's able to encourage us. And you know that.
[18:53] Others in their own day. The likes of Daniel.
[19:07] And Isaiah. And Habakkuk. They all thought. When things were going wrong.
[19:17] And going against them. That everything. Was. That was out of control. But each of these men.
[19:29] In their own day. They were confronted. With the glory of God. And they knew. That God lives. Especially Isaiah.
[19:41] When King Isaiah died. And he went into the temple. And he saw. His own wickedness. And he saw. His own sin. And then the angel.
[19:53] Came with a call. From the altar. And touched his lips. And the cry. Went out. Who shall go for us. And he answered. Here am I. Send me.
[20:05] And as the hymn says. Because he lives. I can face tomorrow. Because he lives. Because all fear is gone. And I know.
[20:16] Life is worth the living for. Because he lives. And because he lives. Life is worth living.
[20:30] And life. Is in his hands. In nobody else's. And he is the God that will help us. The God that is with us.
[20:42] And the God that is still speaking. Even today. Through his word. And you know. We are so thankful for. When we look into that word.
[20:53] For the encouragement. And for the promises. When people tell you. That there is no hope for this. And no hope for that. We find hope in his word. And even the apostle Paul.
[21:09] When he was in prison. He said. That to be with Christ. Is far better. And you know.
[21:20] We can ignore God's word. Or we can doubt it. And it's relevance. We can accept it.
[21:33] Or we can reject it. But you know. The marvelous. And great. And wonderful thing is. That he is still speaking to us. Through his word. He wants to have a conversation.
[21:44] With us. And he wants to talk with us. And he reveals himself. So intimately. In the gospels.
[21:54] Through his own son. The Lord Jesus. You read about Jesus. His words. And what he says. And what he does. You open the newspaper.
[22:10] And all you get. Is discouragement. And disappointment. On every side. But when you read about Jesus. You are encouraged. That Jesus became flesh.
[22:21] And dwelt among us. Joshua. By this time. Like Caleb. Was getting on in years. Probably about 84 years old.
[22:32] But he was full of vigor. And he was full of enthusiasm. And that enthusiasm. Was contagious. And it would have spread.
[22:42] Throughout the camp. He had a sense of purpose. And a sense of passion. Because he knew that God was able. Joshua knew from a young age. From the time Moses took him.
[22:55] To be his servant. Going about. Going up to the hill with Moses. And seeing everything that was going on. And listening to Moses. As Moses wrote in the book.
[23:06] All that was happening. And he was full of that enthusiasm. And vigor and passion. As did Caleb. I wish that more of our older people.
[23:19] In our congregations. Had something of the enthusiasm of Caleb. When he says. This day I am 85 years old. Able to go out. And able to go in.
[23:30] As I was when the day of Moses promised me. And Joshua. I want you to give me that mountain. And he went and he took the mountain. And we are here.
[23:41] In prosperity. We don't have the same. Facilities. But we don't have the same enthusiasm. For the gospel. And for the word of God. And believe in the power of God.
[23:53] As these men had. That God is able. To do above and beyond anything. That we can ask or think. It's. You know. We talk about congregations.
[24:05] And numbers. It's not numbers we want. It's quality we want. It's what men and women of prayer. Who will bend their knees.
[24:18] And believe that this God. Is the hearer. And the answerer of prayer. And he is the one. Who will come to them. And answer their prayers. And maybe you're here tonight.
[24:29] And you would tell me. Well I've been praying. For this person. For so many years. That's wonderful. Keep on praying for them. God will answer.
[24:40] You might go yourself. But somebody will take on the burden. And God will answer that prayer. Age isn't a barrier. It's no barrier to God.
[24:52] God. And you know. We hear of. Men and women in their 70s. Who get jaded and discouraged. We have no reason to be discouraged.
[25:10] Up on this island. We have heard of God's workings. Over the years. We've heard about it in Wales. And we've heard about it in Ireland. And other places. Friends.
[25:22] Friends. God hasn't changed. It's us that have changed. We've become more lethargic. And lazy in the place of prayer.
[25:38] Do you remember. What it says in James. About. Elijah was a man just like ourselves. But he says.
[25:50] The eventual fever and prayer of a righteous man. Availeth much. When you come to God. Do you remember.
[26:03] He's the one who hears. And he's the one who answers prayer. And there's no prayer going up to God. In vain. He hears.
[26:15] Every single one. Moses was Joshua's assistant. And he had a great teacher. And a good teacher. And that's what we need to be doing today.
[26:31] Teaching the young. Encouraging them. To come to God's house. To come to the prayer meeting. That the prayer meeting is not a boring meeting. God's worship is not a boring worship.
[26:44] Friends. There are places in this world. Who would be overjoyed. To be able to gather like this. To open God's word. And to worship them. Joshua progressed from slavery.
[27:01] Through the ranks. He probably thought nobody was noticing him. But God noticed him. And Moses noticed him.
[27:13] And he was encouraged. You can read about it in Numbers. 24. Deuteronomy 31. And in 34. Where we read that. Moses had laid his hands on Joshua.
[27:28] That he was filled with wisdom. To enable him to carry out the task. And we all need encouragement. From the youngest to the oldest of us here.
[27:43] We need encouragement. We need encouragement in our walk. And you know we need to be of strong. As he says.
[27:55] And of a good courage. For he says. Thou shalt bring the children of Israel. Into the land. That I have given them.
[28:07] God had given them that land. He was going to take them into that land. Because he has promised them. We worship a covenant keeping God. The God who made a covenant with Abraham.
[28:22] And although it was hundreds of years before. He hadn't forgotten it. God remembered it. And he was going to keep it. Because he is faithful. And he is not a forgetful God.
[28:34] And that same God. He won't forget you tonight. Whatever you have asked him for. Moses work was done.
[28:46] That ended. But Joshua. He was the one who was taking over. His time had come. And he was going to take up the mantle.
[28:58] That Moses had given him. Moses and Aaron had led them.
[29:10] From Egypt. To the wilderness. To the borders of the promised land. To the banks of Jordan. Moses couldn't lead them through.
[29:22] Any more than the law could take us to heaven. Because we couldn't keep. The law ourselves. For the evil sins. In one.
[29:35] Part. Sins in all. There was no. Way we could keep it. But Jesus kept it perfectly. There was no fault. No failing in him.
[29:48] And. He completed everything. He fulfilled everything. And it says there. His last words on the cross. Tetelestai.
[30:01] It is finished. I've done the work. That you gave me to do. The cup. That you gave me to drink. He says. I've drunken it. To the dregs.
[30:12] I have taken it. He paid the price. For sin. There was no other good enough. To pay the price for sin.
[30:24] He only could unlock the gates of heaven. And let us in. For the people of Israel.
[30:36] It was a new beginning. And Joshua had the responsibility. He was in control. But with the call. And the commission. Was the equipping.
[30:49] And the assurance. No man. Shall be able to stand against you. All the days of your life. As I was with Moses.
[30:59] I will be with you. I will never leave you. Nor forsake you. Jesus. When he was baptized. By John the Baptist.
[31:11] To begin his ministry. Was baptized. At the Jordan. And Jesus said. To his disciples. When he was carried. Into heaven. All power.
[31:24] Under heaven. Is given to me. Go out ye. Into the world. And preach the gospel. And he says. I will never leave you. I will never forsake you. And I will be with you.
[31:36] Till the end of the age. And that promise. Is through today. For Joshua. Leadership was to be hard. It's difficult. And so often.
[31:46] When you're in charge. Of men. Sometimes you think. You're dealing with children. And that's the reality of it. But with God's help.
[32:00] There's also the resources. He is faithful. And a very present help. In times of trouble. In a new beginning.
[32:11] For this nation. They failed in many ways. And that's the way. The Christian life is. Sometimes we're up on the mountain. And the next time. We've called.
[32:21] We've failed. And we're down in the valley. But he never fails. He never lets us down. He's a very present help.
[32:31] In times of trouble. And. They failed in many ways. And instead of looking up.
[32:43] It's like ourselves. We start looking inward. But I think it was Max Sheen. That said. For every look.
[32:53] You take into yourself. Take ten looks to Christ. And. He's the one. Who finished the work. And you know.
[33:04] So often. Instead of living. In victory. As God's people. We're living like beggars. We're living like paupers.
[33:18] And you know. When we come into God's house. Instead of being full of worship. And being full of praise. Or even on the street. Our heads are down.
[33:33] When we should be praising him. Because we're the richest. People in the world. We have a treasure inside us. That can never be taken from us.
[33:46] And it never. It will never change. He has begun the good work in you. He will complete it. He will complete it. On that day. Too often.
[34:00] We have the spirit of murmuring. And muttering. And of complaining. And we're saying like the people of Israel. It's too big for us. We can't do it.
[34:12] We'll never. We're not able. Maybe you're like that. You've spent many years in the wilderness. But God's been speaking to you.
[34:27] You've been looking for peace. You've been looking for satisfaction. You've been looking for joy. But you don't find it. I remember when I was.
[34:39] In the world. And I was. Going to the communion service. And the words of that hymn. Came forcibly to me. None but Christ can satisfy.
[34:53] None other name but me. For me. There's life. Love and life. And lasting joy. Lord Jesus. Found in thee. I remember. Looking for joy.
[35:06] At the broken cisterns. As they say. I remember. Being down in the Cabaret Fae. One night. And a voice came into my head. And says. Donnie. You get out of here. This is not the place for you.
[35:18] Friends. I got out. And I never went back. Go. He says. Go over this Jordan. Into the land I am giving you. Put the wilderness.
[35:32] Years behind us. Friends. There's many of us. We need to put the wilderness. Years behind us. Like the prodigal son.
[35:46] God was speaking. And he came to himself. And sometimes. We need to come to ourselves. As well. And take stock.
[35:56] And look around us. And see. And you know. That those who come to him. He will never. Cast you out. I'm giving you this land.
[36:11] Take it. It's a new leader. It's a new beginning. And see those guys. That's occupying. That land. The Canaanites.
[36:22] The Hittites. The Hivites. The Chebusites. Judgment was looming on them. Because of their wickedness. And their sin.
[36:33] And God had let it go on. In many ways. Like the. In the book of Jonah. Like the Ninevites. To see if they would repent. And they didn't. But what they didn't know.
[36:45] Was judgment was looming. It was round the corner. In the form of Joshua. And the Israelites. And what they had to do.
[36:58] Was to go and to take the land. It was God's land. It was a precious land. It was a pleasant land.
[37:11] It was a glorious land. It was a land that he says. Was flowing with milk and honey. And you know what Ezekiel said. It was the centre of the nations.
[37:27] It was the centre of the nations. And it's the lifeline. And it's the lifeline. Between the world. And heaven. And it's the centre of the world.
[37:41] And if you look at the state of the world today. All the eyes. They're on Israel. As the old guy used to say to me.
[37:53] Looking for. For what's happening. He says. You keep your eyes on Israel. That's where you need to keep them on. Not what's going on in the Ukraine.
[38:05] Or somewhere in Africa. Or South America. But what's happening in Israel. It's the lifeline. Between God and heaven.
[38:16] And salvation is of the Jews. Salvation is of the Jews. And that's what history is confirming to us today.
[38:36] All the attentions on Israel. They're to get this land. And they're to go forward in faith.
[38:46] And that's what we need to do as well. We need to have faith. Because friends. There is a land that is fairer than day. And that's the land that we want to get to.
[39:02] As the Bible says that. I have not seen nor yet heard. It hasn't entered the heart of man. What God has prepared for those who love him. It's a land that is fairer than day.
[39:15] And we're looking for that inheritance. That's incorruptible. It's undefiled. That fadeth not away. Reserved in heaven for you.
[39:26] Are you making that your priority? Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount is talking about all the things.
[39:38] That the lilies of the valley and all the food and our clothes. But then he says, seek first. He says, the kingdom of heaven and all other things shall be added to you.
[39:51] That was Joshua's priority. To get that land. It was Jesus' priority to secure that hope for us. Is it your priority tonight?
[40:06] Are you seeking the kingdom of heaven? If you are, you need to be strong and have a good courage. We need to be loyal.
[40:18] We need to be obedient. And we mustn't weaken. It's not easy. There is going to be trials and tribulations and obsession all the way.
[40:32] You'll find it in your own home as well. But Joshua, you need to take this word. And you need to meditate on it. You need to study it.
[40:46] And remember it. And you'll be successful. Remember what he did to Pharaoh. Remember what he did to Zion.
[40:58] King of Heshbon. Anog. King of Bisham. You, Joshua, you know what he did to the Amalekites.
[41:15] That victory wasn't won on the battlefield. It was won up in the mountain with Moses, Aaron and her as they prayed. Thine eyes have seen all these things that the Lord hath done.
[41:30] So shall the Lord do to all these nations that you passed through. Joshua needed assurance and encouragement as well. And it's found by staying close to Jesus.
[41:44] And being in his word. As the Bible says in Romans. We're not to be those who conform to the world.
[41:59] But to be transformed by the renewing of your mind. And meditating on God's word. Joshua was there.
[42:15] And God didn't tell him. Hey Joshua. Get out. Get all these blacksmiths together. And make shields and swords. To win this battle. No, he says. You read my word.
[42:29] You meditate on it. You remember it. You've had lessons. And you'll be successful. And we need to remember it as well.
[42:44] We need to take our lessons from it. And we won't find that word. Giving us instructions on our iPhones. Or our iPads.
[42:57] Or our newspapers. Or our televisions. We're to read that word. We're to remember it. We're to meditate on it. And we're to claim its promises and its assurance.
[43:13] What a promise he gave Joshua. His presence was assured with him. I will go with you wherever you go. I am with you always.
[43:23] That's what Jesus said as well. To the end of the world. And Jesus told us that he's going to prepare a place for us.
[43:35] That where I am. You may be also. And all that is found. In God's word. You go to your newspaper. On Monday morning.
[43:46] And see if you can find some good news in it. I guarantee you won't find much. But if you go to the world. You will find great news.
[43:56] But it's not easy. We need to strive to enter in at the straight gate. For narrow is the way. And straight is the gate that leads to eternal life.
[44:10] It's the broad road. The road that everybody else is on. Leads to destruction. Every day is a battle. But he who promised is faithful.
[44:24] So that we boldly say. The Lord is my helper. You're not left to run this race on your own. God is going to help you.
[44:37] And I've known that help in my own life. And I've known it from others. Who has found help in God. At the very time that they needed it. As I said before.
[44:51] There's nothing that can compare. With what's before us. I have not seen. Nor ear heard. And it hasn't entered the heart of man.
[45:04] What God has prepared. For those who love him. Friends we need to do away with apathy. And lethargy.
[45:17] And we need to get back. To worshipping and to praising God. As we were created for. And what he wants us to do.
[45:30] Because he has given us heaven's best. For the worst. So that we might live in him. In Christ.
[45:43] You have everything. But out of Christ. The little you had in this world. Is nothing.
[45:54] For the world to come. May God help us. And encourage us to. Worship him. And to praise him. And to go forward in his strength. Believing that he is able to do.
[46:07] Above and beyond anything. That any of us can ask or think. And the reason that he's done it. Is because he loves you.
[46:19] He's loved you from the foundation of the world. Before you were even created in the womb. God had his eye on you. And he wants you for himself.
[46:29] And he doesn't want you to perish. My goodness. I look back. And I see the people. That I've known over the years. And work with.
[46:41] And you know this. The way I see our world today. Our world is going to hell. And even our children.
[46:53] Have no interest in the gospel. We need to get back. To prayer. And to encouraging them.
[47:05] And we need to encourage ourselves. Because we've got a great hope. And a great saviour in Christ. And a commendous saviour to you tonight.
[47:16] The Lord Jesus Christ. No other way. It's the only way to heaven. All the rest is rubbish. It's not.
[47:30] They're not alive. They came and they died. Good in many. In their own ways. In many ways. But only one could say.
[47:42] That he was the way. The truth and the life. And no one else. No one can come to the father. Except through him. And I commend him to you tonight. Let's close our worship.
