[0:00] We get now to the prophecy of Isaiah and chapter 52 and reading at verse 13. Isaiah 52 and at verse 13.
[0:12] Behold, my servant shall deal prudently. He shall be exalted and extolled and be very high. As many were astonished at thee, his visage was so marred more than any man and his father more than the son's.
[0:30] Of men. And so on. Well, friends, we know that the world in which we live is full of chaos.
[0:41] It's full of suffering. It's full of disorder. And we read about that and we see it in our news bulletins and in the midst of all the disorder that there is in the world, there is surely the great need to find an answer to that disorder.
[0:57] And we see, for example, the ongoing disorder with regard to migrants in Europe and the way in which that's a challenge to the nations confronted by these things and the way in which the world needs an answer.
[1:10] There is disorder. There is chaos. There is insecurity. And there is a need for an answer to all of these problems. And that's not unlike the day in which Isaiah was writing.
[1:25] He was writing to a people who were moving out and who were moving along. A people who were going to move from Jerusalem to Babylon because their enemies were going to come and to carry them away.
[1:40] And in the midst of that moment, there was destruction and there was loss. Much of what they loved in Jerusalem was going to be destroyed and left in ruins. So the whole picture is one of disorder, of suffering, of anxiety, of mourning, and of people losing the things that were precious to them.
[2:00] And in Isaiah's message, there is dotted along, in particular this section of the prophecy, there is dotted along messages of hope and messages of salvation.
[2:15] And these messages of salvation are particularly focused on the promise of the coming Son of God, the Messiah, the Lord Jesus Christ. And when we read chapters like 42 and 49, 50, 52, the ones reading here, 52 and 53, these are the chapters that bring us into the place where there is real hope for these people who are going into exile.
[2:40] And so today we're dipping into this fourth good news message to these people who are in the midst of this chaos, a message that's to bring order, and not just order, but to bring joy into their lives.
[2:57] So I want to look first of all at the way in which we have in these verses the astonishing beauty of the one whom God is promising.
[3:11] There is a personal beauty. We could be a servant.
[3:44] We could be slaves to be slaves of a master, as the children of Israel were down in Egypt with Pharaoh. But we can also be servants on a voluntary basis.
[3:55] We can give ourselves to the service of a good master. And in serving that good master, we can have pleasure, and we can have joy, and we can have satisfaction. We can be a servant of a good master.
[4:10] And that's the picture we have here. Behold, behold, my servant, who is speaking about this servant? Whose servant is he? Who is the master? And when we read these surrounding passages, we see that the master is the Lord Jehovah, the God of Israel.
[4:28] It is him who is speaking. And he is speaking with regard to his servant. And this servant, with regard to whom he is speaking, is the servant whom he is calling to himself.
[4:42] He is the servant whom he is putting into the position of servant. He is the servant whom he is going to uphold and to keep and to give strength to. He is a good master.
[4:55] And he is a good servant. And everything that the master wants the servant to do, he tells him clearly what he wants him to do. And he gives him the power to enable him to do it.
[5:08] And the servant goes, and he goes to do the work with the power and with the authority of the master. He goes forward to do the will of his master.
[5:21] And it is with regard to that servant, to that relationship between the Father and the Son, between God and the promised Messiah, that these words are speaking.
[5:32] Behold, my servant shall deal prudently. And when we read about the servant in chapter 42, he is the servant in whom my soul delights.
[5:46] God delights in the person of his Son. He delights in the person of his Son, particularly as he is the servant.
[5:58] He is moved in his heart with a sense of joy and of satisfaction. And delight when he looks upon his Son. And he does so because of the beauty of his person.
[6:13] And we read about the Lord Jesus when he comes into the world. And we read about his birth. We read about his baptism. And there the voice comes from heaven at his baptism.
[6:24] This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased. And there at his baptism, there is this announcement, this proclamation from heaven that God the Father is fully pleased, takes great delight in, sees the beauty of the Lord Jesus.
[6:46] The beauty of his own Son. And we go and read in Proverbs chapter 8, and there is that picture, that story of wisdom as a person that points us to the Messiah.
[7:01] And the Messiah, the Son of God, speaks there as the one who was daily the delight of his Father. Who was rejoicing before him always. So in this astonishing beauty that belongs to this passion, there is the divine delight of God in the passion of his Son before the world ever was.
[7:24] There is the divine delight of God in the passion of his Son as he comes to be his servant. There is the divine delight of God the Father in the passion of his Son as a servant in all that he is going to do.
[7:37] It is an ongoing delight in the beauty of his servant. And when we hear the Lord Jesus saying, as he continues his work, and he is speaking to his disciples and those around him, when we hear him saying, I and the Father are one.
[7:59] It is a harmonious beauty. And it is a beautiful harmony. It captures the stillness and the absolute delight that the Father has in his Son.
[8:14] And the Son has in the Father because of who he is. What do you think today? What do you think today of this delight that God has in the beauty of his Son?
[8:30] The readers here in chapter 53, they see no beauty in him that they should desire him. What do you think?
[8:44] The church of Christ is saying, he is altogether lovely. They are of the same mind as God the Father. When they see the Son of God, he is altogether lovely.
[8:59] This is the one who my soul loves. Do you delight today in the person of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, because of who he is?
[9:12] But as well as a personal beauty, there is a practical beauty. There is a beauty that belongs to the Son of God arising out of the work that he is going to complete and accomplish.
[9:30] My servant shall deal prudently. He shall act wisely.
[9:42] Not so much that he has wisdom as we understand it. The wisdom to be silent when that's the best thing to do. And the wisdom to speak when we need to.
[9:53] That's great wisdom. And wisdom that we need to have. But the wisdom that the Bible speaks of here, and generally speaking in the Old Testament, is the wisdom which a person has, the skill with which the person's success is ensured.
[10:10] It's the wisdom which will make sure that the person will prosper. It's the wisdom which will make the person effective in all of his actions, in all of his doings, in all of his purposing.
[10:22] He will gain results. And before the Son of God ever came, before the Messiah ever came, here is God speaking about him, telling us what kind of servant he is going to be.
[10:38] He is going to act wisely. He is going to be successful in everything that he does. And in general terms, what he is going to do, the main focus of his work, is to bring about a new exodus in the experience of these people who are suffering and crushed under the judgment of God, and who are going to be carried away to Babylon.
[11:05] He has promised to come and to bring them out from the place to where sin has driven them. It's similar to what God did when he took Israel out of Egypt in that great exodus through which he formed them into a people.
[11:20] He's going to come again once more, and he's going to bring about a new exodus, and he's going to bring these people back to himself. He's going to gather them around himself. And in order to achieve that, he's going to give the servant as a covenant.
[11:36] He's going to give the servant as a sacrifice. The servant is going to offer himself. He is going to reconcile the world to himself through Jesus Christ.
[11:51] His practical beauty. Is he going to achieve it? Is he going to be successful? Is he going to bring you and me? Is he going to bring us back to God?
[12:03] Is he going to achieve this? As we watch him going forward as the one who is going to make his soul an offering for sin. As we watch him going forward to that awful cross.
[12:18] Is he going to come back from there? Is he going to bring us back with him? God the Father is certain that he will.
[12:31] He will be successful. And he wants the readers to look at the servant. And to look away from the difficulties that they are facing.
[12:42] And to look at him. And to behold my servant. And he will be successful. To bring you out of the misery of your sin. And to create this glorious exodus. Where people will come back to God.
[12:55] And where they will surround the Son of God. And find in him. Not a temple made with hands. But find with him the presence of God. And the power of God.
[13:05] And the salvation of God. Where they can find joy and peace with God. He will be successful. And the proof of that success.
[13:19] Is that he shall be exalted. And extolled. And be very high. Who is going to do that? He is going to be passive. When this activity is taking place.
[13:31] When he is going to be resurrected. When he is going to ascend to glory. And when he is going to sit at God's right hand. Who is responsible for these glorious activities?
[13:42] God. The judge. The father. By the power of his spirit. Raises his son from the dead.
[13:55] On the third day. He ascends into glory. And when he comes into glory. We have these. Beautiful words.
[14:07] That speaks to us. Of the admiration of God the father. When he sees his son. Coming back home. With the scars of the battle. And with the victory won.
[14:20] And he says to him. Sit. At my right hand. Until I make your enemies. Your foodstool. He welcomes him back. Into the glory.
[14:32] Which in. A mysterious way. We have to think of him. Leaving behind. Or veiling at least. He welcomes him back. And he tells him. To sit down.
[14:43] Place of victory. Place of success. The place. Place of achieving results. The place from which.
[14:54] He is going to reign the world. And the place from which. He is going to. To gather people. To himself. By the power of his spirit. Through the preaching of the gospel.
[15:04] And God the father. Takes great delight. In his. Finished work. You remember. When. God finished.
[15:15] The first creation. He had done it all. And. Behold. God saw. All. That he had done. And it was.
[15:26] All. Very good. It was the way. The way it should have been. It was. The way it was designed to work. And everything was working perfectly. And now.
[15:38] On this. Proclamation. Of. Of the admiration. Of God. The father. As a son. Enters glory. And he asks him. To sit down. Well done.
[15:50] God sees all. That he has done. And. It's all very good. All. According to design. All. According to plan. All. Going to work together.
[16:01] To achieve the results. And. Surely. The bible. Allows us today. To think of. God. The father. Admiring.
[16:13] The astonishing. Beauty. Of his son. He was beautiful. Before he came into the world. But is there. Not today. Another dimension. To the beauty.
[16:23] Of the son. As the father. Beholds him. Because. Of the fact. That he was a faithful servant. And because he finished. This work. The astonishing beauty.
[16:38] What do you think? The perfectionist. God the creator. Who examines everything perfectly. The great perfectionist. Sees this work. And sees this servant.
[16:50] Absolutely. Perfect. Beautiful. Beyond description. What do you think? Of his astonishing beauty.
[17:03] Do you see no beauty in him. That you should desire him. Even today. Although you know that. He's gone to that awful cross. Even today. Although you know that he's.
[17:14] Finished everything that God sent him out to do. Even today. Although you know that he's opened this. Way from. From where you are. To the paradise of God. Yet still. Do you see no beauty in him.
[17:29] That you should desire him. Because the people of God are saying. Yes he is altogether lovely. Let me think of him as the son of God.
[17:41] And he is absolutely beautiful in himself. But let me now think of him. As the son of God. Who loved me. And gave himself for me. And there is a beauty.
[17:52] Way beyond my comprehension. I cannot but be captured. Drawn. Attracted.
[18:04] Totally absorbed. With such beauty. What do you think? Is he altogether lovely? Or do you see no beauty in him?
[18:18] The astonishing beauty. Secondly. Secondly. God wants us to see. The astonishing disfigurement.
[18:30] Of the servant. And when we. Turn to verse 14. It is. Worth noting. That God is now. Not speaking to the people.
[18:42] He is speaking to his son. As many as were. Astonished at you. Here is God himself. Giving us an insight.
[18:54] Into this kind of conversation. That he has. With his own son. As many as were. Astonished. At you. And. He is the one who came to.
[19:06] Bear the sins of many. And the many did not see any beauty. In him that they should desire him. But now the many. Are astonished. That is disfigurement.
[19:22] And. The whole picture of. Of astonishment. Is. It is more of course. Than. Than being. In any way. Discontented. Or disturbed. It goes. It goes beyond that.
[19:34] It is the kind of picture. That leaves us. Leaves us desolated. Horrified. It is the kind of picture. That. That leaves our lives. As if. They were. Falling apart.
[19:44] Because of a sense of. Of wonder. And of. Of lostness. In the midst of. Such destruction. And such astonishment.
[19:55] We see in the Bible. It is brought before us. In the light. Of one particular thing. In the light. Of the judgment. Of God. And you see.
[20:07] Here. 30. 27. Is one of these examples. In the judgment. Of God. On the land of Tyre. The. Inhabinants. Were. Were astonished. At what had happened. And what else.
[20:18] Does he say about them. The hair. Of the kings. Bristled. With horror. At the judgment. Of God. Because. God. Had come to. To destroy. Tyre.
[20:28] In his judgment. And now. We. We go to. To the cross. At Calvary. Where the judgment. Of God. On your sin. And on mine. And on the sins.
[20:39] Of the world. Is diverted. And focused. On the oppression. Of his son. And in that. Pouring out. Of his judgment. Where he bears. His holy arm.
[20:50] To. To pour out. His wrath. On his son. There. Takes place. The most. Astonishing. Disfigurement.
[21:00] Ever. And it takes place. There. Because. The son. Who is. Delighting. In doing. The will. Of the God. Of God. Is doing.
[21:11] The will. Of the God. Concerning. Whom. We read. That it was. The will. Of the Lord. To bruise him. He is. Embracing. The will.
[21:21] Of God. As. He does. So. In the. Sermon. To give us. Complete obedience. And as he. Embraces that. He is. Embracing. The will. Of his father. As the judge.
[21:32] To bruise him. And. In that. That awful. Crushing. Of his son. On that. Awfully. Vainted. Calvary.
[21:44] The sword. Of God's. Justice. His. Sechariah. Awakens. And. Pure. His son. Awake. O sword. Against.
[21:54] My shepherd. Against. The one. Not. Who is. My enemy. But. Against. The one. Who is. My. Fellow. My. Close. Companion. Against.
[22:06] My son. And. There. God. Wants. To say. To his son. That. When that. Happens. He wants. To say. To him.
[22:16] That. Those. Who will. See it. That their. Hair. Will. Stand. On end. That they. Will. Be. Terrified. And. Appalled. At. The. Awful. Way. In. Which. The. Judgment.
[22:27] Of. God. Changes. The. Appearance. Of. The. Son. Of. God. In. This. Moment. Of. Redemption.
[22:38] Of. God. Achieving. And. The. Son. Achieving. The. Results. Of. God's. Great. Plan. The.
[22:48] Drama. As. It. Unfolds. This. Is. Not. As. They. Think. We. Did. A. Steering. Smitten. Of. God. And. Afflicted. He. Must.
[22:59] Have. Done. Some. Wrong. In. Order. To. To. Suffer. This. No. This. Is. Not. The. Work. Of. An. Enemy. This.
[23:10] Is. The. Work. Of. The. God. Who. Has. Absolute. Delight. In. His. Son. Who. Sees. Him. In. All. Of. His. Beauty. And. Who. Sees. Him. As. The. One. Who. Is. All.
[23:21] Pleasing. To. Him. And. Now. He. Is. Working. For. Your. Salvation. And. Mine. Twenty. Works. That.
[23:32] Is. The. Awful. Astonishing. Dumbfounding. Kind. Of. Experience. Of. The. Judge. Of.
[23:42] God. And. Here. Perhaps. Is. One. Of. The. The. Great. Paradoxes. Of. The. Gospel. That. That. There. Is. Great. Beauty.
[23:52] In. In. The. Most. Awful. Place. That. Was. Ever. To. Be. Found. In. God's. Creation. Beauty. And. Disfigurement. That.
[24:04] That. God. Loves. The. Son. Without. End. And. Without. Fail. And. That. Even. In. The. Moment. Of. The. Cross. When.
[24:15] The. Son. Is. Punished. By. God. As. The. Judge. In. Order. To. Achieve. Our. Salvation. To. Reconcile. Us. To. God. But. Then. Perhaps.
[24:27] God. Admired. Him. And. Loved. Him. More. Than. Ever. Before. He. Had. Never. Been. Here. Before. It.
[24:38] Was. All. In. God's. Plan. But. Now. At. Calvary. It. Happens. Behold. My. Servant. As. Many. Were. Astonished. At.
[24:48] You. Here. Standing. On. End. What. Do. You. Think. The. Cross. Of. Jesus. Are.
[25:00] You. Astonished. At. Such. Suffering. Are. You. Astonished. That. That. God. Who. Loves. His. Son. So. Much. Loves.
[25:10] You. So. Much. That. He. Inflicted. This. Upon. A. Son. That's. Astonishing. The. Love. Of. God. And. The.
[25:20] Grace. Of. God. Surely. You. Have. To. Pause. And. Hear. What. God. Is. Saying. To. Son. Many. Astonished. At.
[25:30] You. Why. Were. They. Astonished. Of. Of course. It's. Because. Of. The. Disfigurement.
[25:43] And. All. The. Language. That. That. Isaiah. Uses. Here. And. That. God. Uses. Through. Isaiah. Here. Suggest. To. Us. Movement. Away. From. The. Original. Here.
[25:53] We. Have. Something. That. Is. Original. This. Is. What. Always. Existed. But. Now. There. Is. Movement. Away. From. That. Towards. Something. Else. And.
[26:04] In. That. Disfigurement. We. See. That. His. Face. Was. Disfigured. His. Visage. Was. So. Marred. More. Than. Any. Man. His.
[26:15] Appearance. His. Appearance. Was. So. Disfigured. That. It. Was. Disfigured. It. How.
[26:27] Hair. Raising. Was. This. Moment. For. The. Son. Of. God. It. Was. So. Hair. Raising. That. If. I. Think. Of. His. Face. And. Its. Beauty. As. He. Walked.
[26:38] The. Face. Of. This. Earth. With. His. Disciples. As. He. Prayed. With. Them. As. He. Taught. Them. As. He. Be. Miracles. God.
[26:51] Honoring. Human. Being. A. Perfect. Servant. There. Was. No. Man. Ever. Like. Him. In. His. Speech. Or. In. His. Actions. A. Perfect. Man. But.
[27:03] Now. I. I. Must. To. To. See. Him. On. The. Cross. At. Calvary. And. I. Must. To. Think. Of. There. That. Whatever. He. Was. Then. He. Is. So. Different. To. That. Now. And.
[27:13] I. I. Forced. To. Ask. The. Question. As. I. Think. Of. The. Son. Of. God. On. The. Cross. At. Calvary. Is. This. A. Man. His. Appearance. Has. Changed. So. Much. That.
[27:24] He. Doesn't. Look. Like. A. Man. Anymore. It. Astonishing. The. Most. Beautiful. Person. That. Ever. Lived. The. Face. Of. This. Earth. And.
[27:35] In. This. Moment. Of. Of. Achieving. Your. Salvation. And. Mine. That. Is. Unrecognizable. And. Not. Because. Of. What. The. Jews. Or. His. Enemies. Did. But.
[27:45] Because. Of. What. God. The. Father. Did. Because. God. Loved. The. World. And. Gave. A. Son. And. Because. God.
[27:57] Did. Not. Hold. Anything. Back. Because. God. Did. Not. Spare. His. Son. This. Is. What. He. Didn't. Look. Like. He. Didn't.
[28:07] Look. Like. A. Man. That's. Hair. Raising. What. If. We. Had. Been. There. What. If. You. Had. Been. There. Around. The. Cross. As. We. Think. Of.
[28:17] The. Woman. Looking. Af. Off. And. This. Awful. Experience. Hair. Raising. Moment. When. They. Remembered. What. He. Had. Said. The.
[28:28] Astonishing. Disfigurement. Of. His. Face. But. That. Was. Accompanied. By. The.
[28:39] Disfigurement. Of. His. Whole. Body. It. Wasn't. Just. His. Face. His. Far. More. Than. The. Sons. Of. Men. His.
[28:49] Physical. Appearance. Moving. Away. From. From. Being. Anything. Like. A. Son. Of. Adam. The. Perfect. Son. Of. God.
[29:01] The. God. Man. And. He. No. Longer. Looked. Like. A. Man. And. We. We. Read. And. Sang. In. Psalm. 22. A. Psalm. That. Speaks. To. So. Much.
[29:11] Of. Of. Of. The. Suffering. Of. Of. The. Son. Of. God. Where. These. Words. Are. In. His. Mouth. Even. On. The. Cross. I. Am. Poured. Out. Like. Water. All.
[29:22] My. Bones. Are. Out. Of. Joint. My. Heart. Like. Wax. Is. Melted. Away. My. Strength. Stride. Up. Like.
[29:32] A. Pot. Shared. My. Tongue. Sticks. To. The. Roof. Of. My. Mouth. His. Soul. Outside. And. His. Whole. Inside. Is. Falling.
[29:43] Apart. In. This. Crisis. Moment. On. The. Cross. His. Whole. Being. Is. Disfigured. As. God. Condemns. Sin.
[29:53] And. The. Penalty. Of. Sin. In. The. Flesh. And. The. Body. Of. His. Son. On. The. Cross. The. Astonishing. Disfigurement. Surely.
[30:04] Today. You. And. I. And. The. Whole. World. Should. Should. Be. Absolutely. Gobsmacked. That. This. Is. How. Much. God. Loved. And. That. This. Is. How.
[30:14] Much. The. Lord. Jesus. Loved. That. He. Was. Ready. And. Willing. To. Go. To. This. Place. And. Suffer. This. Experience. And. Lose. So.
[30:24] Much. Of. His. Of. His. Outward. Beauty. And. His. Appearance. So. That. You. Would. Live. And. Not. Die. And.
[30:37] So. So. There. Is. The. Real. Human. Question. How. Can. He. Be. Successful. Now. You. Told. Me. That. He. Was. Going. To. Gain. Results.
[30:47] You. Told. Me. That. He. Was. Going. To. Achieve. What. He. Set. Out. To. Do. How. Can. He. Do. That. Now. He. Is. We. And.
[30:57] Dying. On. The. Cross. His. Whole. Physical. Body. Is. At. The. End. Of. The. Road. He. Can. Take. No. More. He. Is.
[31:08] Falling. Apart. But. That's. The. Glory. Of. This. Astonishing. Disfigurement. That.
[31:19] That's. The. Place. He. Had. To. Go. To. In. Order. To. Gain. The. Results. In. Order. To. Secure. Our. Salvation. And. That. As. He. Descends.
[31:30] Into. These. Depths. And. Gives. His. Life. Over. Over. Into. Death. Itself. That. There. He. Destroys. Him. Who. Has.
[31:40] The. Power. Of. Death. That. Is. The. Devil. And. He. Does. So. In. Order. To. Bring. Many. Sons. Many. Children. Of. God. In. Order. To. Bring. Them. To. Glory. The.
[31:52] Astonishing. Disfigurement. The. Greatest. Revelation. Ever. Of.
[32:02] The. Glory. Of. God. Surrounded. With. Darkness. And. Pain. And. Suffering. And. Disfigurement.
[32:15] What. Does. My. Sin. Deserve. What. Do. You. Think. It. Deserves. This. Is. What. It. Deserves. What. Is. Going. To. Be.
[32:25] Your. Reward. If. If. You. Fail. To. Recognize. That. That. Here. Is. The. One. Who. Is. All. Together. Lovely. Here. Is. Where. You. Can. Come. And. Look. And.
[32:37] Have. An. Indication. Of. What. Your. Suffering. Will. Be. Like. Surely.
[32:48] Today. You. Must. See. Some. Beauty. In. Him. That. You. Should. Desire. Surely. Today. You. You. Must. Think. Of. Of. The. People. Of.
[32:58] God. Who. Who. See. In. This. Dark. Awful. Moment. That. He. Is. The. Altogether. Lovely. One. Who. Loved. Me. And. Gave. Himself. For. Me. Surely. If. The. People. Of. God. Are. Captured.
[33:09] With. Us. Surely. You. Need. Now. To. Give. Some. Thought. As. To. What. You. Think. And.
[33:19] Some. Thought. As. To. How. You. May. Change. Your. Thinking. And. Decide. Otherwise. With.
[33:30] Regard. To. The. Son. Of. God. The. Savior. Of. The. World. The. Astonishing. Disfigurement. And.
[33:41] Just. In. Closing. The. Astonishing. Blessing. The. Very. Ones. Who. Saw. No. Beauty. In. Him.
[33:53] The. Very. Ones. In. Psalm. Two. For. Example. The. Kings. Of. The. Earth. Setting. Themselves. Against. The. Lord. And. Against. His. Anointed. The. People.
[34:03] Who. Are. The. Enemies. Of. God. What. What. Happening. To. Them. What. What. What. Astonishing. About. What. Happens. Now. It. Is. That. It. Is. These. Very. People. That. They. Are. The. Ones.
[34:13] Who. Come. To. Have. Their. Eyes. Opened. To. Their. Hearts. Ready. To. Believe. So. Shall. He. Sprinkle. Many. Nations. The.
[34:24] Kings. Shall. Shut. Their. Mouths. At. Him. For. That. Which. Had. Not. Been. Told. Them. Shall. They. See. And. That. Which. They. Had. Not. He. Had. Not. He. Shall. They. Consider. He.
[34:36] Shall. Sprinkle. Many. Nations. He. Shall. Make. Many. Nations. Many. Kings. And. Many. Peoples.
