[0:00] I can just follow on to they be sons of life look come to the fields of life We shall turn now to Hebrews chapter 9 And we shall focus this morning On the words that we find In verse 14 Hebrews 9 verse 14 Christ is the eternal spirit On the self of the earth spoke to God We are gathered this morning around the Lord's table
[1:03] And we're focused there for a song for Lord Jesus Christ In a very special and direct way And perhaps above all today upon the work of our Saviour And what he did for our redemption And for our salvation We often analyze that work And if he had it as prophet, priest and king Those three offices of our Lord and Saviour In reality it's not one office That of Redeemer But within that one office There are those three responsibilities Prophet, priest and king The word office invites us In the Lord's duties and obligations That when the word meant originally a duty Became his duty to redeem us
[2:04] And in that context To be a prophet, priest and king And in that context I want for a moment today To focus especially On the priesthood of the Lord Jesus And it's an entity fact that Only in Hebrews is that word applied to the Saviour We find in other places Revenant to the Lord's sacrifice And atonement and so on But only here In this one epistle This is spoken of as a priest And a great high priest And I want first of all To look at two general points Made by Hebrews In this connection First of all The priest had to be called To his work No one we are told To this about himself But only those who are called by God
[3:05] And so our high priest Must likewise Have a divine authorization A divine calling Collecting upon This particular responsibility As a priest That calling In the case of the Lord Jesus Christ Goes back into the ages Before he came into this world Goes back into eternity itself He was called to this office From all eternity He itself spoke Of the Lord's Supper Of the blood of his covenant The new covenant Of my blood Referring to a covenant Going back into eternity Between God the Father God the Son And God the Holy Spirit And it's in the framework Of that covenant That Christ comes Into this world
[4:05] To save us He is not simply Samed by the command Of his Father Not as he comes simply By his own initiative But he comes As a result Of a wonderful And eternal Discussion And agreement Between the persons Of the God Father, Son, and Holy Spirit Each of these In love with us Each of these Loving you And prompted By that love In our ancient For our salvation And our ancient For the role That each one Would play In the work Of redemption Because each one Was and is Involved still In our salvation God the Father God the Son And God the Holy Spirit And so the heart Of that covenant From our point Of view this morning Is the covenant
[5:06] For our Jesus To take our nature And to bear our sins And to make atonement For those sins But God the Father And God the Spirit Are also involved Each in his own way In the mission Of our Saviour You'll find For example At the birth of Jesus That all three persons Are involved There The Son Is conceived By the power Of the Most High And by the power Of the Holy Spirit We'll find Here the baptism Of the Lord And again All three are present And at the cross As well Father Son And Spirit Each one In his own way Is there And we'll come back That later on Perhaps At time and hours It is A point Worth pondering When the words
[6:07] Apply to Jesus And he tastes Of death Apply also To God the Father And God the Son Did they taste death Along with the Saviour They didn't die As he died But they shared Somehow In that tasting Of death Along with the Lord Jesus Christ So It is Within this Covenant Flamor As the one Sent by God And the one Filled with the Spirit That Jesus Comes He comes Under certain Obligation That as Influations He must Come And take His people's Place He must Obey In their Place He must Die In their Place He must Atorn For their Sins But he Comes On to Who There are Certain Glorious Promises That
[7:08] God Will uphold Him The Holy Spirit Will Indwell Him And God Give Him A people And God Will give Him All that Those That People Or Those People Need For Their Life And Salvation God Will Give Us Give You The New Birth And Faith And Perseverance And Corrigence And All These Things Are Promised To Jesus In The Come He Will Obey And In Responsible Obedience These Will Be His Rewards And So He Comes Not In Survivatory Fashion But He Comes To Represent His People To Be Their Substiture To Be Their Atonement But He Comes In The Flavor Also Of Those Glorious Divine Promises And So He Is Called By This Covenant To
[8:08] Be Our High Priest But It Is Also Part Of That Covenant That God The Father And God The Holy Spirit Will Also Do Their All Part In The Work Of Your Salvation Let's Be Very Careful That We Give Place To All Three Persons That Includes The Fact That Today Jesus God Slam The Knight Of The Cross Is Still Fully Active In Your Salvation He Has Not Retired From His Work Of Saving Us Even From God's Right Hand He Is Still A Redeemer On A Daily Basis And Of Course God's Spirit Two Is With God So We Have This Astounding Fact This Foolish Of The Divine Personhood Committed In Love To Your Salvation And
[9:08] To Mine Called By God To Be A High Priest We Also Know Secondly Here According To Hebrews That He Had To Be Taken From Other Men He Had To Be A Human Being Because He Was To Represent Men Before God And Only A Man Could Represent Men Before God And Beyond That Also He Had To Be As We Told Earlier On A Faithful And A Merciful Or Compassion Type And To A Glorious That He Came And Took Out Of Nature We Go Over This Time And Time Again As A Central Wonder Of Our Faith God Manifes In The Flesh God Becoming Flesh God Taking The Form Of A Servant Taking
[10:09] My Kind Of Body With All Its Frages And Sexitilities And Taking My Kind Of Soul My Kind Of Spirit My Kind Of Mind My Source Of Feelings My Source Of Affections Learning As I Learn Feeling As I Feel Loving As I Feel Making Choices As I Make Choices Fearing As I Feel Amazed As I Amazed Wondering As Sometimes All Of Us Are Amazed Coming Into The Fulness Of Our Human Nature Nothing That Was Human Was Alien To And All That Was Human Was Held In Him In Perfect Proportion And Balance The Lord Coming So Close He Knows What It Is To Be
[11:09] Human And He Took Not Only The Human May To The Lord Soul The Human Variety He Dwelled The Brothers In His Body Of The Shadow Of Dead If Set Unfollowed Living Of Unfollowed Men And Women That Standing In The Flood Gates Of All Intimulations He Knew Human May Of Human Fear He Get Seminary Of Human Amazement And Bewilderment He Regret Of Death Knew The Fear Of A Holy God He Knew Grievement Knew Friendship Lived Unite Lived Unite It Jaws As Well As It Sorrows It Sorrows As
[12:09] Well As Joy He Was Taken From Above Man And That's Why He's Mership Because He Understands He Is With Us But It Said He Not Ever Torn For Our Sins The With Is Done Enough There Must Be A Far As Well As With But He Is With Us True In All Of Your Story Sin Alone Accepted A New Temptation But Not Sin But So He Stats Before Us As The One Who Is Called By My God As The One Taken From A Man Representing Us And Simplifying With Us And Compassion Towards Us And Although We Might Say Yes But There Is No Sin And
[13:10] How Can He Simplified With Us Well As I Say Before He Did No Sin He Did No Temptation And I'm That He Himself Would Have Felt The Full Force Of Temptation All Its Ferocity All Its Subtlety All Its Guiding As We Never Do But He Must Sometimes Turn To His Father And Say His Father Forgive Them Because They Have Been Tempted And Temptation Is A Terrible Terrible Thing And He Has Compassion Of The Tempted He Has No Knowledge Of Sin But He Has Real Personal Knowledge Of The Full Force Of Demonic Temptation Taken Then From A Man And Then I Turn From Those Two General Points To To To To The Poe To The Text Before Us Here In Hebrews 9
[14:11] And Verse 40 We Are Told Here First Of All That He Offered Himself With A Spot To God He Offered Himself And That That That Is For Us The Antiquity Of The Savior He Himself Is So Active In His High Priesthood At The Cross Of Calvary If We Go Back To The Story Of The Day Of Atonement In Hebrews 16 We Find That The Unique Role Of The High Priest Was To Offer The Sacrifice The Scapegoat Of The Day Of Atonement To Go To The Most Holy Place And He And He Alone Could Bear That Responsibility And Here Is Our Great High Priest And He Goes
[15:11] Into The Most Holy Place And He Goes With Blood Because He Must Have Something To Offer But What Blood Does He Go With Not The Blood Of Wolves Or Of Ghost Or Of Alain But With His Own Blood And That Is Such An Amazing Thing Going In With His Blood Whose Blood Is It And Sometimes You Tremble As You Ask The Question And Tremble At The Answer Whose Blood Is It And I Sort Of Shed To To To To To That The Blood Shed Your Silt Of Across A Calvary Was Blood That Chambered In The Names Of God Blood That Chambered In
[16:12] The Names Of God It Was The Blood Of The Son Of God Who Is Himself God The Blood Of God Feed The Church Of God Which He Purchased With His Own Blood And So He Has His Own Blood With The Blood Of His Divine Person The Blood Of That Body Which Is The Body Of The Son Of God That Precious Precious Precious Blood Is Built For Us And Presented Before God In The Most Holy Place That Is The Atonement Before Our Sin But It Is Also Of Human Blood That Is His All Glory And Atonement That Is In By The Angel That Sinned Man Sinned Man's Blood Is Spilled
[17:12] Man's Blood Is The Atonement Whenever The Early Church Theologians Remarked Once That The Blood That Was Filt On The Cross Of Calvary Was The Same Kind Of Blood As Flowed From The Back Of The American Slave Under The Lash The Same Human Blood And So It Was In With This Blood Which Is The Blood Of God And The Blood Of The Slave Under The Lash This Divine Blood Which Is Also Human Blood God God God Has Told Us These Things To Encourage A Reflection Upon Them The Wonder Of The Blood That Was Spilt On
[18:12] The Cross Of Calvary That Blood Which Is My Atornment That Yours What He Gave He Gave Himself For Us Not Simply His Pain Or His Suffering And Not Simply His Blood In A Wail For God Has Its Own Absurd Has Its Own Optimus He Gave We Are Told Himself For Us He Is Himself John Says Or Prodiciation Gave Himself What In God The Father Gave Him The Cross Of Calvary He Gave His Old Son Who Did He Not Spare His Old Son Who Does The South Give The South Gives Himself He
[19:12] Is Without Sense A Holocaust A Birth Offering Who Srenders Himself Folly To Be God Soon For The Fires On The Or God His Son Not Spare Gave Him To Die God His Son Not Spare Himself Gave Himself To Die But Set No Limits To That Suffering Or To That Dying He Became Dead He Gave Himself Himself And He Himself Is The Cover For Our Sin At What Level Such Attribute To The Love Of Christ He Loved Me Give Himself For Me A Tribute To God The Father's Love Here
[20:12] In Islam Not That We Loved God That He Loved Us He Gave His Son A Probitiation For Our Sins But A Bermudian Also To The Gravity Of Our Sin For My Sin A New Sin That No Atonement Could Surprise That God's Son Must Die That God Must Face Death On The Cross Of Calvary What Chaos Sin Has Loved What Anomalies It Has Created That The Son Of God Must Bear Such Pain And Must Go So Holistically To Encoursey The Adathema Due To To Our Sin God Spare To No Physical Pain
[21:12] God Spare To No Spiritual Pain But God Spare To The Loss Of His Own Fellowship Why God Why God Why Have You Forsake To Me Surely Not That Have I Surely You Spare Me That Surely At You Be With Me In The Darkest Moment On The Cross No My Son I Cannot Be There Because You Are Sin And I Cannot Look On Sin For The First And Again Is There Not A Word Dear Father Not A Word No My Son Not A Word Not A Word For The Word Not A Word Because You Made The Sin Of The World He Gave Himself God The Father Gave His
[22:29] God And He have set me atone without spot. And I've gone without blemish and without spot.
[22:42] Had to be so because the sacrificial love always had to be perfect without blemish and without spot. And there is no spot here.
[22:55] So sorely tempted by Satan. So sorely tested by temptation. But Satan found no fruit toward him.
[23:07] And yet news had found no fruit toward him. There was in him no birth sin no sin by man. There was in him no birth sin because he is created holy from the substance of the virgin.
[23:26] As Adam was created holy out of the dust of the air. So the last Adam is created holy from the substance of the virgin. He is not sanctified after his creation but sanctified in his creation.
[23:43] Created holy that holy thing which shall be born of him shall be called the son of God. So holy at and from his birth.
[23:55] there is no corruption of the angel here. There is no actual sin here. There is no fallenness at all here. But the perfect love of God that sinless love of God.
[24:12] And that is a terrible thing. What is he doing with the cross? what is he doing down for the transgressors?
[24:24] I should praise one of the gospels which may not be all that indicative but which I find touching in any case. Sitting down with the soldiers watching him there.
[24:39] Him there. Him there. Why is he there? Why is he on the cross?
[24:51] Why is he between those two thieves, those two sinners? Why is he numbered with transgressors? Why is he recrucified outside the city?
[25:03] Why? Because he has no sin. Why is he there? Why is there? Why is there? Why is there? in my place condemned his feet.
[25:18] That is the power and force of glory of the great power of substitution. He is there on my behalf.
[25:29] He is there in my place. He is there where in my sin and my sin is being condemned and is being dealt with and answered for in the body of this world who must know sin to even beyond that of glory is the Son of God.
[25:51] This sinless of this Son of God. They watched him there. Why is he there? Because he loved me and gave himself for me.
[26:05] He is there in my place. he gave himself, offered himself without small to God.
[26:18] And it is so we are told and we tend to get perhaps to not as steepness as we ought through the eternal spirit.
[26:30] And I take this to be fair to God the Holy Spirit. This was part of the covenant that through all his life and ministry he would be upheld.
[26:44] Behold my servant to my uphold God the Father uphold him every step of the way. And that is the point where perhaps our reflections upon the ministry of Calgary come to almost at a end.
[27:05] And what says was God the Father upholding him when he was forsaking him? I hope the question not irreverent but I have no answer to it.
[27:18] God the Father upheld him. God the Spirit upheld him. God the Father through the Spirit because he had covenant yet in agreement as to this they love the son so much they love him so much and they love you so much that so is baptism they are more faithful as encouraged him to remind him that she is loved and the Spirit is reminding the power that will accompany all the days of his ministry and now that has come to a climax all the adorments of her of her Savior's character were due to the Holy Spirit all his graces all his gifts all his teaching authority all his power performing miracles these all came from the
[28:19] Holy Spirit it is not simply it is not a value at all that the divine nature supports and upholds the human nature it is that God the Holy Spirit who the Father so loves God the Son the Holy Spirit ministers to him as he does to you and to me encourages and strengthens and guides and sustains all the days of his ministry but now it's crying after the cross demanding such strength and such courage and such faith in the promises of God in the man first does he hear the covenant of his promises he looks all so dark from the cross but the faith of
[29:21] Jesus who sees the promises the fire of hope still burns at the home the love the fire of love to God and to man that love burns through the eternal spirit ministry so they are here as I said God the Father giving his hand God the son giving himself God the Holy Spirit the great and Abraham the great and power ever sustaining your high priest our knight at one in this last great climate of his ministry and of course on the third day afterwards Father Son and Spirit will together raise that body from the dead and raise it to glory through the eternal spirit we have to come to terms with the endurance demanded on
[30:30] Calvary to call it super human would be an understatement it was possible only because of the ministry of God Spirit to his own Messiah the anointed one and part of the wonder of the days that you too have your anointed and with big care it may be said that you too are Messiah his anointed ones because you have an action from the Holy One and every single one of you hasn't that person it will be true of you life in its final moments of trial that the angels will say that you endured through the eternal spirit the same comfort was available to a
[31:38] Lord and Savior the same resource the same encourager ministering to yourselves part of the reason why it was not the divine nature simply that have held him is that then that would distance him from you because you have no such nature to uphold you but you humanity you humanist it has the mercy of God spirit to uphold you in all the challenges and all the trials of your own discipleship so there he is this water was called by God this water taken from a man to bear this water of himself without spawning God through the eternal spirit other conclusions which I'm not going to develop at all but I run before this here in this same verse but in the same context we're told for example that he secured for us an eternal redemption a perfect redemption from all the damage done to sin to our bodies to our environment to our spirits all of these secured for us by the
[33:06] Lord Jesus Christ and we're told here to that's verse 12 obtain eternal redemption and then cleanse your consciences our consciences so remain as we remind yesterday morning so unforgiving so very often and say to us unconscious say work work work work work say to us read for sometimes the blood the blood was enough the blood wasn't enough work work work I work work work works his conscience but the blood says the work the blood says Christ is the door that is the glory of the gospel the only event in the world which made it her as my relationship with God is the event of the cross that one single event determines your standing before
[34:13] God your righteousness with all the righteousness that God requires and is there in him that great elementary lesson nothing in my hand I pray simply to thy cross I pray David Dixon from the first contemporary said once at the end of his life I took all my bad works and all my good works and I made of them all one man do and I fly from them both to Christ to a place that works here they shouldn't to make your conscience a moment longer and then we're told again just to serve the living
[35:24] God your purified conscience your sense of peace your joy of salvation your love the Lord in response to his love for you and your conscience are encouraged to serve him to worship him to be secure bodies living sacrifices every service is not a glorious people you are all priests you all have a sacrifice to offer as a great high priest have and what have you to offer he offered himself we offer ourselves here am I said me
[36:27] I'm sorry Lord I'm not enough of a pledge or no spot but such as I am and such as I have I give you John Calvin at a great motto I offer my heart to you O Lord may God bless this world let's turn in three
