[0:00] in words, in users' language, that we probably would not really think about using.! And what I love so much about the Word of God is that it is not AI-inspired, it is Spirit-inspired.
[0:17] And if I ever had the choice between the Spirit of God and AI, I would choose the Spirit of God every time, because it is eternal. AI is like everything else. It will come, and it will go.
[0:33] There will be a day that it will just cease to exist, just like everything else will cease to exist. But God and His Word will always, always be there.
[0:44] And so, that's what I love about the Scripture, that's what I love about the Word of God, and that's what I love about these verses that we are about to read.
[0:55] I'm very tempted to kind of start somewhere where I don't want to start, and I think I'm just going to get into that temptation. If you go down to about the 25th verse of Psalm 37, it is the 25th verse.
[1:08] This is the verse in Scripture that is familiar to every one of you, most every one of you. And this ought to really be the very first verse of this poem, of this psalm that David wrote.
[1:22] And the reason why is it kind of is, it's kind of some of the things that I've been talking about lately, but it's David professing something in his life.
[1:38] And let's look at it together. It says here in chapter 25, David says this. He says, I have been young. Everybody say, I have been young.
[1:48] I have been young. Not everybody's been young. Isn't that right? Right. It says everybody's been young. Not everybody's been old yet. And some people do not get to the point where they are old.
[2:03] Some people pass away early. All right. But everybody has been young. And being young is great because when you're young, you have a lot of energy. You have vision.
[2:15] You have dreams. You have ideas. You have ideals. You want to be able to live those out. And so if you're young and you're smart, you get the opportunity to do a great many things in your life.
[2:31] And not everybody's young and smart. Maybe some of us have not been as young and smart as we wanted to or as smart when we were younger as we wanted to. I heard somebody say one time, youth is wasted on the wrong people.
[2:44] Youth ought to be for older people. Because after you've lived a while, you really have some solid ideas. And when you're young, a lot of times you can expend a lot of energy.
[2:56] But the expending of all that energy is not necessarily virtuous all the time. And so David says, I have been young.
[3:07] And he's looking back over his life. And we can recount some of David's youthful years. We've heard about David as he wrestled with the bear, as he wrestled with the lion.
[3:24] We've heard about David in his youth going and fighting Goliath, the giant. All of those things that seem like they are wonderful.
[3:35] And they make wonderful Sunday school stories. They really do. And David has looked back on all of this. Now, David's life is not perfect.
[3:47] Because if you look back on David's life, you'll see actually that it's been full of trouble. There's been a lot of trouble on David's life. When he was a youth, he was not respected by his brothers.
[4:01] When he was a young man, he was in the court of Saul. Saul ended up going crazy. And he decided that he wanted to kill David because he was jealous of David.
[4:11] So David spent a lot of years wandering and running in the wilderness. He lived in caves. And he lived a life of a fugitive. And that was David's life when he was a younger man.
[4:25] And that wasn't very pleasant. David didn't get to grow up like maybe a lot of young men in Israel grew up. And then David forms a friendship with Saul's son, Jonathan.
[4:39] And that's a very pleasant relationship. But then David ends up later becoming the king. And he doesn't become a king in the way that he really wants to become a king.
[4:49] He's only become the king because Saul and Jonathan, his good friend, have died in battle. And so David becomes the king. But he is a king and he is a man that goes off to war with his army.
[5:04] And there ends up being lots of other things that happen in David's life. There's the incident with Bathsheba. There's the incident with Bathsheba's wife, Uriah, the Hittite.
[5:16] And then he's confronted by Nathan, the prophet. And all of these things come along. And then if that's not bad enough, later on, as David is getting older, his son Absalom tries to usurp the throne.
[5:31] And he has David basically kicked out of the kingdom. And so in David's early life, he's facing a king that wants to kill him.
[5:41] And in his later life, his son Absalom becomes the king for a bit and wants to kill him. And so David's life is sandwiched in between two people that want to see his demise.
[5:56] And so David's life has not always been pleasant. If you ever get the chance to read a book called Three Kings, read it. It's a wonderful book. But David's life is not always pleasant.
[6:08] And David looks back here in this psalm, the 25th verse, and he says, I've been young. And then he says, and now I am old.
[6:25] And David was in his 80s, about in his 80s when he ends up passing away. And he wrote this psalm about that time.
[6:36] He says, I've been young and now I'm old. And what he's telling us is that I've seen a lot of things over these 80 years.
[6:47] A lot. I've seen good times. I've seen bad times. I've lived in the highs. I've lived in the lows. I have lived in every part of the spectrum.
[7:01] He says, but there's one thing I have not seen. I've seen all manner of things. But what I have not seen is this.
[7:12] I've never seen the righteous for sin. I've never seen that happen. I've seen men killed. I have seen men go off to war and go off to battle.
[7:28] I've seen victories. I've experienced victories. I've eaten the bread of the tabernacle. I have done all of these things.
[7:38] But there's one thing that I've never, ever experienced. And what I've never experienced is I've never experienced the righteous being forsaken.
[7:51] And that's wonderful. And here's why it's wonderful. Because when you have tracked your life. And when you can look back over your life.
[8:05] And when you can look back at all the experiences you have had. What you see is everything that you have ever felt.
[8:17] Every word that you have ever said. Everything that everybody's ever said to you. What others have done to you. What others maybe have not done to you. You experience all of that.
[8:28] But what you don't see is everything that could have happened. But never did happen.
[8:39] Because God prevented it from happening in your life. Because he was like the invisible force that kept things from you.
[8:50] Because you decided to walk with him. It's like that poem that we all have read about footprints in the sand. Where the man is walking along the beach.
[9:04] And he's walking with the Lord. And when he gets to the end he says. Lord there were times there was only one set of footprints. And you said you would always walk with me. And the Lord turns to him and he says.
[9:14] Yes that was when I carried you. Those are the things that we do not see. And David said here's what I've never seen.
[9:25] I've never seen God forsake righteous people. I've never seen God forsake his people. I've never seen God be faithless. I've never seen God turn away from his people.
[9:37] I've never seen that happen. And what I'm trying to say to you here at this moment. Is that there is a blessing in things you don't see. There is a blessing in things that you don't experience.
[9:50] There is a blessing in things that you have never gone through. I thank God that I've never had to spend a night in jail. I thank God that I've never stuck a needle on my arm.
[10:03] Not that I've never had opportunity for any of those things. But I thank God for all of the things that he kept me from. And so David says I've been young.
[10:15] He says now I'm old. He says but here's what I've never seen. I've never seen the righteous forsaken. And I've never seen his seed begging for life.
[10:27] I've always seen God take care of his. I've always seen God take care of his people. I've always seen God take care of his home. I've always seen. That's what David is saying.
[10:38] And there is so much that goes on in what we don't see. Don't experience.
[10:51] Don't hear about it. And the only time that we will ever, ever come to that knowledge is when we reach a time. When we step up on the other side.
[11:01] It's like Paul saying. Then shall I know. Even as also I am known. He says now we see through a glass darkly. But then we will see face to face.
[11:14] And Paul lets us know that. Because he's saying. We only know in part right now. And we only speak in part. Now. Let's go back to the very first verse of this song.
[11:28] And then we will get back to verse number 25. Psalm 37 and verse 1. Look at what it says here. David says this. Fret not thyself because of evil doers.
[11:42] In other words he says. Don't stress over this. Don't stress over people that do evil. Now I don't know if unless you have just decided to be a hermit.
[11:57] And not be exposed to anything that's going on in the world. I can tell you right now. There is a lot of evil that is present in the world. There are all kinds of things that are happening.
[12:10] That frighten me. And when I look at them. I think my goodness. I would love to be able to do something about that. But I don't feel like I can do anything. He says.
[12:23] Do not fret yourself. Do not get. What he is literally saying is. Do not stress out over evil doers. Neither be envious against the workers of iniquity.
[12:38] And what the phrase workers of iniquity. Are those that inflict injustices. Now when you look at that word.
[12:49] Injustice. It's the opposite of justice. Everybody wants justice. Everybody would like to have justice played out.
[13:00] In the world. But there is a tremendous amount of injustice. That happens in our world. On a daily basis. And David is saying.
[13:13] All of this is going on. You and I see it today. Unlike David ever would have imagined seeing it. But even in David's day.
[13:25] There was injustice that was done to people. There were evil deeds that were done. By many people. And David says.
[13:37] In this song. We ought not. To be worried about it. Or stressed out about it. And here is the reason why. The reason why is found in the very next verse.
[13:51] He says. For they shall soon. Be cut down like the grass. And wither. As the green earth. And what David is saying.
[14:02] Is every injustice that's being done. Every evil deed. Every evil act. Every evil individual. Everything that is evil in the world. Everything that's wrong with the world.
[14:12] All of it. Will one day. Be cut down. It's just going to be like. Going over it with a long day. It's going to be cut down. It will be like the grass. The earth.
[14:24] He says. It just dries up. And it's going to wither away. It will never exist. If you look. Now that's. Hard for us to grasp. Because.
[14:35] We can live day to day with it. We can live. With it so closely. That it seems like. It will never end. Like it seems. Like it will never. Ever stop.
[14:46] But this is why David says later. I have been young. And now I am old. And what he's saying. Is I'm telling you. That there's a day coming.
[14:58] When all this injustice. That we see. Every unfair act. Every unreasonable act. Every unreasonable word. Everything that it ever gets under.
[15:10] It will all come. To an end. Is what David says. Look at what he says. In verse number eight. He says. Cease from anger.
[15:22] And forsake wrath. And fret not thyself. In any wise. To do evil. Again. Here he says. In verse nine. For evil doers.
[15:32] Shall be cut off. But then to us. To those of us. He says. That are waiting on the Lord. What does he say? They shall inherit the earth.
[15:46] In other words. The tables. Are going to turn. Just referencing. Again. This conversation. I had with Zeke. Just before church.
[15:57] We talked about. How that AI. Will spur. Different kinds of capitalism. And I said. You know. The only. The downside. The biggest downside. Capitalism.
[16:08] Is greed. Because people get greedy. But greed happens. In all kinds of political systems. And in all kinds. Of.
[16:20] Types of governing people. Or. Whatever it might be. Greed exists. In. Democracies. Greed exists. In. Communist countries.
[16:31] It exists. In fascist countries. It exists. All over. Greed is just part of human nature. And. All of that. Is just.
[16:42] Because of. The. We're fallen. We're a fallen humanity. Ever since. Ever since. The garden of Eden. And when you think about it. The second generation.
[16:53] From the garden. There was already murdered. Cain kills Abel. His brother. I mean. They're just. Years.
[17:04] Several years away. From the garden of Eden. You would think. It would take some time. For that to build up. But it doesn't. It's. It's almost. Immediate.
[17:15] That it happens. And so. What David is saying. He's saying. That. Those that wait upon the Lord. They shall inherit. The earth.
[17:27] He's saying. The wicked. Are going. To pass. Away. And the wicked. Are going. To. They're going to. Be gone. So.
[17:39] Here's what David says. Here's what you need to do. There's four things. That David says. You need to do. In this song. These four things. Are the most. Important things. That we could probably do.
[17:50] Let's pay attention to him. In verse number three. He says this. Trust in the Lord. That's the first thing. In verse number four. He says.
[18:01] Delight yourself. In the Lord. In verse number five. He says. Commit your way. To the Lord. And in verse number seven. He says.
[18:12] Rest in the Lord. Those four things. Trust. Delight. Commit. And rest. David says. If you do those. Four things.
[18:23] Every. And. And if you think about it. This. Entire. Song. Is really. About patience. It's really. About being patient. He says. If you'll do those.
[18:33] Things. Everything else. That you see. That is contrary. To these things. It will. Pass away. Now. Let's be honest. It may not pass away. In your lifetime.
[18:45] It may not pass away. In your own. Even your own. Personal experience. But the word. Is true. It will. Pass. Pass.
[18:55] Away. And part of the reason. That I bring this up today. Is because. In. In this generation. That we live in. Where so much is visible.
[19:06] That we see. And we see. That's wrong. People are saying. The wrong thing. They're doing. The wrong thing. They are. They are committing.
[19:18] Injustices. Not only to individuals. But to groups. Of people. And when we see. All that. We think. Something's got to be done. About that.
[19:29] And what I'm here to tell you. Is. Something is going to be done. About that. Because. God. Is. The great record keeper. And if you think. That people.
[19:40] Or movements. Or groups. Are going to. Continue to. Get away. With whatever it is. They can get away with. The Lord. Will always. Even the scales. So.
[19:51] He says. So what's our job. Our job. Is to do this. Is to trust in him. To wait on him. To delight ourself. And to commit to him.
[20:04] And then. All of those other things. He will take care of. Is it up to us. To try to get vengeance. On others. No. Is it up to us. To exact.
[20:15] Retribution. On others. No. All of that. Is God's job. The Lord says. Vengeance belongs to who? Me. I'll repay. Right. You don't have to worry about it.
[20:27] That's right. I'll make it right. Amen. And when God. Makes it right. He makes it right. That's right. Amen. And when God. Does a thing. It's done. In exactly.
[20:37] The right measure. And in the right way. Just a few more verses. Here. That I want to get to. Look at verse number 20. He says.
[20:48] The wicked shall. Perish. And the enemies of the Lord. Shall be as the fat of lambs. They shall consume. The smoke. They shall. Consume.
[20:59] Away. But go down to verse 23. But look at what he says. The steps of a good man. Are right. They're ordered. By the Lord. And delighted.
[21:10] In his way. And though he fall. Verse 24. For he shall not be utterly cast out. For the Lord. Upholded him. With his name. And then he says.
[21:22] I have been young. And now I am loved. And I have never seen. The righteous. Forsaken. Now.
[21:34] There are times. That every one of us. Is probably felt forsaken. There are times. That we have probably. Felt forsaken. By some person. And there may have been times.
[21:46] That we have felt. Forsaken. By him. But David says. This truth. He says. I've never seen. The righteous. Forsaken. And I've never seen.
[21:57] The seed. Baking. For bread. When you think about. Baking. For bread. And we see people. That.
[22:09] We would. We would call. Bakers. They might be. On the side of the road. Holding a sign. They're asking. For a hand. But I want you to think. About something.
[22:19] Here. You know. I can't remember. I can't remember. Any point. In my life. Where. I went. Into the kitchen. And could not find.
[22:31] Anything. There was always. Something. It may not have been. What I wanted. At the moment. But if it was a matter.
[22:41] Of keeping me alive. It could be. The day. God. So. God is always. Always. Somehow. Made away. I don't live.
[22:52] In the biggest house. I don't drive. The most extravagant car. But I've always. Had a roof over my head. I've always had. Some form. Of transportation.
[23:05] I've gone. Into my closet. And I've never. Not had. Something to put on. It may not have been. Used. It may not have been. Most expensive. It may have.
[23:18] Needed some help. Here and there. But there was. Always. Something. This is. Where. We forget. This is. Where. We tend. To forget. How good.
[23:28] God is. To us. I was. I was. Sitting down. With somebody. The other day. Younger. Than I am. And already.
[23:40] Retired. And my. Mind. Thought. Wow. That guy. Is smart. He's been. A lot. Smarter. Than I have. Over the course. In my life.
[23:51] And. I thought. You know. I could. I could. I could. Feel bad. About that. But rather. What I should do. Is think. That's great. For him. God bless.
[24:02] That man. Because. He has. Used his. Used his. Resources. Wise. God. Bless. And. There's always. Something. That you can. Aspire to.
[24:13] There's always. Something. That you would like. To be better. But. Here's the point. Is that. God. Is always. Provided. God. Always. Provides.
[24:24] For his own. Uh. It's very rare. That we have ever. Missed. Too many means. And. Most of the time. It's because. We have chosen.
[24:35] To miss. But. For most of us. Here today. God. Has been very good. To us. And he has. Provided. For us. And he has given us.
[24:46] The things. That we need. And. What we have to try. To balance out. Of course. Is. The difference. Between. Our wants. And. Our needs. And so. Here's the thing.
[24:57] Is that. David is saying. This is true. And I'm just giving you. This observation. From all of my. 80 plus years. Of living. I've been young. And I've seen. All manner of things.
[25:09] He says. But here's what I can tell you. Is that. God never fails. I've never seen. God forsake his people. I've never seen. God turn away. From his people. Even at times.
[25:20] And in Israel. Even when God. Pronounced. A curse upon them. Because they had. Forsaken them. Yet. He would say. But there will be a day. I will bring you back.
[25:31] I will be. Your God. You will be. My people. Every time. God pronounced. A judgment. He gave them. A promise. He said. If you'll do this.
[25:42] I will do this. And I'm here. To tell you. Today. That oftentimes. It's not much different. With us. Is that. Sometimes. God will. Allow us.
[25:53] To go through. A difficult time. But part of the reason. Why. Is. He's not just. Trying to play games. With us. He wants us. To seek after him. He wants us.
[26:04] To go to him. And say. You know what Lord. I really. Do. Need you. And every time. I can tell you. From personal experience. And some of you. Can stand up.
[26:15] And say. From personal experience. Every time. My path. Was against the wall. God. Never. Forsook me. He always. Seemed through. He always.
[26:25] Delivered. He always. Provided. He always. And you know what. When we get to the end. Of our life. Wouldn't it be wonderful. To say. God was.
[26:36] Always. Give to me. God was. Always. Always. Thank you. God. Always. Provided. That's right. That's right. I don't know. If any of you.
[26:46] Remember. That old song. That just simply said. God's been good to me. He's been so good to me. More than this world. Can be. He's been.
[26:58] Good to me. Part of that song. Says. I've seen. Good times. I have seen. Bad times. But God. Has always. Always. Always. Been good.
[27:09] And every one of us. Myself. Included. Have had to remind ourselves. Lord. You have always. Always. Been good. I've never seen. The righteous.
[27:20] Forsaken. And I've never seen. His seed. Begging. For bread. I've never seen that. Those are truths.
[27:31] That you can rest. Your life upon. That you can rest. Your faith upon. Those are truths. That will never go anywhere. And they will never change.
[27:42] And David. David. In the middle. Of his song. And I'm close to finishing. Reminds us. That these things. Are true.
[27:53] Let's. Go down. To. The. Thirty. Sixth. Or the thirty-seventh verse.
[28:04] Says. Mark. The perfect man. And behold. The upright.
[28:15] For the end of that man. Is. Peace. But the transgressors. Shall be destroyed. Together. And the end of the way. Shall be come.
[28:25] And in verse thirty-nine. He says. But the salvation. Of the righteous. Is of the Lord. He is their strength. In the time. Of trouble.
[28:36] And the Lord. Shall help them. And deliver them. We shall deliver them. From the wicked. And save them. Because. They trust him.
[28:51] If there was. If there was. No more. Versus. In the entire. Life. Except this. If this was. The only thing.
[29:01] That we had. It would be enough. Because. David. Has shown us. That. This is real simple. The simplicity.
[29:13] Of this. Bears. It's truth. He never. Forsakes. Those. Who are faithful to him. He never. Forsakes. The righteous.
[29:24] He never. Forsakes. The faithful. And the only thing. That we're. Left with. Is. I just. Need to be faithful. I just.
[29:35] Need to be faithful. To God. I just. Need to stay. With him. And. If I fall.
[29:47] He'll. Help me get up. Yes. Yes. If I make. A mistake. Amen. Amen. He'll help me. To. Whatever. It is. I do. This is a man. That has.
[29:59] Lived. The entire. Step. He's done. Good. He's done. He. He's been. Uh. Uplifted. He's been.
[30:09] Disappointed. He wanted to build a temple. And the Lord said. No. I'm not going to let you do it. There's too much blood on it. On your hands.
[30:20] I'll let your son do it. And. Solomon comes along. And builds. A temple. But David is the one.
[30:32] That provided all. Of the materials. David wanted to do it. And God said. No.
[30:45] And so this is a man. That has seen. So much. And he's kind of a conundrum. To be honest with you. Because. David is a man.
[30:55] That we. Venerate. Because he. The Lord says. He's a man. After. My own heart. But he's also a man. That we can look to. And say. And be critical.
[31:06] And say. Yeah. But look at what he did. He did this. And he did this. He had a man murdered. It doesn't. It doesn't. It doesn't. There's all.
[31:17] There's all. There's all. Of this. Imperfection. In David's life. All of this. Is going on. But when David. Looks back. Over his life. He says.
[31:29] You know what. All I know. Is that. I just have to. Keep trusting him. That's all. That I know. And you know. We use that phrase.
[31:40] When we say it. We kind of. Toss it around. Like. It's just. Another phrase. But when somebody. Can honestly. Genuinely. Say. I trust you. That's.
[31:54] When you really. Really. Trust me. There's nothing. Else. I need. There's nothing. That takes. The place.
[32:04] Of that. There's nothing. That slips. In the way. Of that. Because. When you are. Really. Trusting. In him. That means. You have given. All control. Over to you.
[32:16] And that's. What David. Is saying. He's got it. He's got it. I've messed up. I've done this. I've been young. I've been old. All kinds of things. But he's got this.
[32:27] I know. That he's got this. Right. Right. Let's stand. Because. I'm done. And. I just want. I just wanted to remind.
[32:38] I said. The Lord. Spoke to me. In prayer. The other day. About. This particular. Verse. And.
[32:50] This is. A time. In our world. Where we just have to remember. Let's. Let's not get too focused. On what's going on. In the world. Whether it's good.
[33:01] Whether it's evil. Whatever it might be. We shouldn't really. Spend too much time. Dwelling on it. Pondering it. Trying to fix it. The world is going to do.
[33:13] What it's going to do. But God has a plan. For his people. God has a way. For his people. And God has a way. That people. Can trust in him.
[33:24] And. Can walk with him. Let's pray. Lord Jesus. We do thank you too. For your word. We thank you. God. Because.
[33:35] You have promised. To trust in you. You have promised. To walk with me. You are the one. That says. All that is right. Yes. You are the one.
[33:47] Today. Lord. That evens out. All of the saints. You are the one. Today. And you. You may put. Our trust.
[33:58] And if we will. Walk with you. If we will. Trust in you. If you will never. Ever. For sin. You will never.
[34:08] Turn. Away. Of this. You will always. Provide. For us. Because that is what. We have always. Done. Lord. You will always.
[34:19] Provide. For your own. You will always. Give it. God. To those. Who are called. By your. You will. Lord. Even though. We are in a different.
[34:30] Dispensation. At times. The truth. Is not. Any different. You've never. For sin. No. Loads. And you see. I've never. Baked through it.
