[0:00] the parent with you and I think Karenza Simons begins by helping us with the memory verse. Hey.
[0:15] Good morning everyone. I'll wait till everyone comes down the front and takes a seat. So we've been learning this verse for the last four weeks now and I think you're getting pretty good at it.
[0:30] So I want all the parents, everyone in the church to pull out the front of the cover of their bulletin which has a verse written on it which is from Colossians chapter 1 verses 19 to 20.
[0:41] Yeah, some of the kids have got them. Okay, and I promised you last week that this week we'd learn some actions. So what I need to do is all the kids to stand up. Everyone else can remain seated. So all the kids need to stand up and we're going to learn the actions together, okay?
[0:56] I'm going to put this down. So I'm going to do some of the actions and you'll repeat them back and then we'll do that once and then we'll do it all together, okay?
[1:08] Okay, so this is our verse. For in him... You guys as well. Okay, for in him... Oh, this is really bad, okay.
[1:21] For in him... Much better. All the fullness of God... All the fullness of God...
[1:31] Was pleased to dwell... And through him... And through him... To reconcile to himself...
[1:42] All things... All things... Whether on earth... Whether on earth... Or in heaven... Or in heaven...
[1:53] Making peace... Making peace... By the blood of his cross... By the blood of his cross... Okay, we're all going to do it together. So let's start again. For... Okay, I'll count on the...
[2:03] Count of three, we'll do it. One, two, three... For in him... All the fullness of God... Was pleased to dwell...
[2:14] And through him... To reconcile to himself... All things... Whether on earth... Or in heaven...
[2:25] Making peace... By the blood of his cross... That's from Colossians 1... 19 to 20... Colossians 1...
[2:36] 19 to 20... Oh, well done guys. So I want to see... Remember my challenge... Next week is the last week. So I want to see... How many families... Can do that as a family. And if you can do actions...
[2:47] That's extra special. And I did say... There would be a reward... For any whole families... That can do it all together. So that's next week. So if next week... You can do it with your family...
[2:57] Then there'll be a special reward. Thanks. Steve. I'll cut my tongue... Thanks.орм ne'm a hospital.
[3:07] I'll cut my tongue... No one's going to be... Look at those... I'll cut my tongue... What's next...どう get Azure... From together... Though, what's next... How It Sunny... Is Your connection... Is Your connection... In the name... Is Your connection... And now... When it hurts.... You... Until someone whining... You... You... You...
[3:17] And now, Saint Jesus is sitting on his main mission throne.
[3:40] Their ending is being defeated. The crops are growing, the pantries are full, food is on the table, and God himself is living in their midst.
[4:01] Only one thing is lacking. Lord God, here I am in this special place, in the land of Canaan, the land you promised my father Abraham and his family were in this glorious city on a hill, in my magnificent palace.
[4:25] But as your people gather to meet with you, we're not in a magnificent house, we meet in a tent. Lord, I want to build you a house.
[4:41] Lord, I'm going to build you a house. No, David. I want to build you a house. I will build you a house.
[4:54] And not just a house, but a kingdom. And not just a kingdom, but an eternal kingdom. It was I who took you from being a shepherd to be the king over my people.
[5:09] I have been with you wherever you have gone. I have rescued you from all your enemies and brought you into this land. Now I, God, declare that I will build you a house.
[5:22] From you will come a king who will open the way for me to live with my people forever. I will build you a house.
[5:36] This is better than I ever could have dreamed of. You're promising to make Israel your own people forever? And a descendant of mine?
[5:47] A descendant of mine will be the eternal king? A son of David? And that king is going to build a house where you, God, will live with your people forever?
[6:00] Thank you, Lord God. Please bless the house of your servant David forever. Surely this was the forever king who would build a house.
[6:12] A forever kingdom where God would dwell with his people. Surely this was the promised one who would crush the serpent. Who would bring blessing to all the people of the earth.
[6:25] Who would deliver the people from their greatest enemy of all. Now that king David's pretty awesome, isn't he? You know, when we look at the Bible, the Bible tells us, thank you, King David.
[6:44] Pleasure to meet you. I'll need your robe, though. You know, the Bible tells us something about King David that it doesn't say about anybody else in the whole Bible.
[6:56] It says that God sought for a man after his own heart who would do all the will of God. So God went on a search.
[7:09] And he searched the whole land. And he found a farming family. Jesse was the head of that family. And he searched through all of the kids in that family.
[7:23] And he found the youngest boy in that family. That was David. David was a shepherd boy. He wasn't a lawyer. He wasn't a doctor. He wasn't a politician.
[7:34] But God had in mind to take that shepherd boy and make him one of the greatest kings of Israel. Because God saw in him that he was a man after his own heart.
[7:46] And that he would do everything that God wanted him to do. And then David had a son by the name of Solomon who became king after him. And the Bible tells us something about Solomon, too.
[7:57] It says that he was the wisest man who ever lived. The wisest king that there ever was. In fact, people came from all over the world to learn from King Solomon's wisdom.
[8:10] And Solomon was the one who ended up building that temple that David wanted to build. But neither David nor Solomon were the king that God was promising in that passage today.
[8:27] A king that would last forever. Now, I need a couple of volunteers here. I need... Is there somebody... Is there a girl in grade 5?
[8:39] Any grade... I see... I see... I see a good queen right there. Could you be my queen, please? Okay. We've got a lovely throne for our queen here.
[8:50] Very long, flowing purple robe. Oh, please. We need your robe here. Okay. There you go. And I also need a king. Let me see.
[9:03] What do we have here for a king? You know, Ben Sprucedon, your dad made such a good king, David. I think I'd like you to be my king. There you go.
[9:14] Thank you. Okay. I have a couple of questions for our king and queen today. Ben, how big would you like your kingdom to be? Huge.
[9:25] Huge. Okay. Huge. And, sorry, I don't know your name. Bernay. Bernay. How long would you like to be queen for?
[9:37] 50 years. 50 years. I have one more question for our king and queen, both of you. Will you be good kings and queens?
[9:56] Not sure on that one. Okay. I have a couple of pictures here. And I'm going to ask our queen, do you know who this is?
[10:07] No. No? Do you know who that is? Do any of you kids know who this is? Elizabeth. Elizabeth.
[10:19] Elizabeth who? Queen Elizabeth II. That's right. And this picture was taken on June 2, 1953. The day she became queen.
[10:30] She looks very happy in that picture. Yeah. Okay. So we have a picture of Queen Elizabeth. I've got another picture of somebody here. Can you tell me who this is? You think it's Queen Elizabeth again?
[10:44] It looks very different from the other picture. What's the difference here? It doesn't have her. She's older.
[10:54] In fact, this picture itself is old. This picture is 11 and a half years old. You know what? Queen Elizabeth is getting older. She's been around for more than 50 years now. But you know what?
[11:05] It doesn't matter whether it was King David or Solomon or Queen Elizabeth. Our kings and queens all have the same problem. They get old and they die. And that wasn't the kind of king that God was looking for.
[11:21] And some kings and queens have been good, like David and Solomon and Elizabeth. And some haven't been so good. And I want to contrast the king that we're talking about today with some bad kings that we've had.
[11:36] Back about the start of the 13th century, there was a man by the name of Genghis. And he lived in Mongolia. And he wanted a huge kingdom.
[11:48] Mongolia was just a tiny little place way up high in the mountains. It wasn't very productive. So Genghis decided he would go out and he would conquer. He conquered all of western China and southern China.
[12:02] But that wasn't enough. So he moved further west. And he conquered all of the Middle East. He conquered parts of Russia, the Balkans, and into Europe. But Genghis Khan was a very brutal king.
[12:16] To conquer people, he would wipe out whole villages and whole towns. Queen Elizabeth might say he was Rex Horribilis.
[12:28] That means a really bad king. And then about 60 years ago, there was another ruler in Germany by the name of Adolf Hitler. Adolf Hitler wanted to rule the whole world too.
[12:41] But he wanted something else. He wanted to have a pure people. A super race. So he set about to create a different kind of kingdom.
[12:52] And he eliminated anybody that he thought was in fear. Or wouldn't be quite good enough for his kingdom. About 34 years ago, there was another man by the name of Pol Pot.
[13:07] And he had a little kingdom in Asia called Cambodia. And Pol Pot didn't want to conquer the world. But he wanted to make Cambodia the perfect communist state.
[13:21] And so everybody had to think like he thought. And he had this vision for a world where everybody would have his ideology. The problem was that if you disagreed with him, even on a little thing, you could be killed and eliminated.
[13:36] And in three and a half years, Pol Pot wiped out through disease, starvation, and execution between 25% and 33% of his people.
[13:50] Those are three very horrible kings. I know our king and queen are going to do a lot better than that. But Jesus is a different type of king.
[14:04] When God wanted to put a king on the throne that would be a king forever, he sought a different kind of king. And I want to contrast the type of king that he is with the other kings and queens that there are.
[14:16] He is a king with power and authority over life and death. But this king does not use his power and authority over life to take people's lives, to destroy lives.
[14:30] He takes it to restore life. Do you remember the synagogue ruler by the name of Jairus? He had a little daughter and his daughter got sick and she died. And he went and he sought Jesus and he said, Jesus, maybe you can help me.
[14:44] And Jesus went to his house and when he got there, he sent away the professional mourners who were there to mourn this dead girl. And he went in and he restored her life and he brought her back to Jairus.
[14:58] And he said, here is your daughter again restored to life. And not only did this king restore the lives of others, but he took his very own life and he laid it down so that all of us could have life.
[15:17] Now that is real power. That is real authority over life and death. But he is also a king who has power over disease.
[15:29] And, you know, our government here in Canada has created hospitals. And they have created pharmacies and places like that. When we get sick, we can go there and get some help.
[15:42] That is great. That is part of what our rulers do for us. But Jesus was different as a king. He didn't need hospitals and he didn't need pharmacies.
[15:53] When he saw a blind man begging by the side of the road, he went up to him and he gave him back his sight. And he was able to see again.
[16:04] When he met a man with leprosy, he would touch him and the leprosy would disappear. Because this king is one that has authority. He has power over disease.
[16:15] He's also a king who has authority over the elements, over nature. And, you know what? I know all of us, and especially if you're a king and queen, you want to be able to say sometimes, rain, rain, go away, come again another day.
[16:33] But, you know what? The best that we can do on a rainy day is to go inside. But Jesus had authority over nature. And one day he was out with his disciples and the winds were blowing down the Sea of Galilee.
[16:48] The waves were coming up over the side of the boat. And Jesus was sleeping in the bottom of the boat. But his disciples were afraid. They were shaking. And they woke him up.
[16:58] And Jesus got up and he stilled the wind and he calmed the waves. Because he had authority like nobody else has ever had over nature.
[17:10] But not only is his authority over the world that we can see, he also, as we see in our passage in Colossians, has authority over all kingdoms, even the ones that we can't see.
[17:24] He has authority over the spirit world that we can't see. And one day, there was a man out in the wilderness, and he was a wild guy. In fact, he was so wild because of the spirits that controlled him that chains couldn't hold him down.
[17:43] And this was a man that everybody was afraid of. But he met Jesus one day. And because of Jesus' authority over those evil spirits, when Jesus told them to, they had to leave the man alone.
[17:57] And they had to go away. And people could hardly recognize that man after he met Jesus. Because Jesus was a king that had real authority.
[18:09] You know what? If we took all of the best qualities of all of the best kings and queens that there have ever been and put them all into one person, it still wouldn't measure up to who we have in this king, King Jesus.
[18:22] Now, would it make sense to take a king that is this great and this powerful and make him the king over Canada? Or America?
[18:34] Or Afghanistan? Or Cambodia? Or Israel? No. All of those kingdoms are far too small. They're far too limiting for a king of this significance.
[18:45] So not only is the king different, but he's also going to have a different kingdom. Let's look at that different kingdom.
[18:56] The kingdom that Jesus rules is in the hearts of men and women. When we say, God, I allow you to become the king of my life, the lord of my life.
[19:09] I will do whatever you tell me to do because you are my boss. At that point, the king is ruling in his kingdom.
[19:21] But the problem is that that doesn't come easy for any of us. In fact, none of us really want to have somebody else to be the boss over us.
[19:32] And that's the struggle that we have in life. But that's where God's kingdom takes place. God has already made Jesus the king of kings and the lord of lords.
[19:44] He's already given him all authority. But he only becomes our king when we enter into his kingdom and allow him to take over and rule our lives to be our boss.
[19:59] He doesn't make himself the king. He doesn't impose himself on us. He makes us choose to allow him to become our king.
[20:10] And that is a very different king and a very different kingdom. Okay, we've got a different king. We've got a different kingdom.
[20:21] So what? What does it mean to you and me? What difference does it make? Not everybody recognizes that Jesus is this eternal king.
[20:33] Some people have never even heard that such a king is even on the throne, that he even exists. They've never heard of his kingdom. Other people have heard and they've said, No, that's not for me.
[20:46] I still want to be the boss of my own life. I still want to run things myself. Our job, what it means to us is our job is to tell others about this king, to invite them to become a part of his kingdom, whether it's at the playground or our schoolmates, our workmates or our neighbors.
[21:06] Our job is to invite them to be a part of his kingdom. Here's the one thought that I want you to take with you this week. The Bible is all about Jesus.
[21:19] Jesus is the king of kings. Therefore, our goal should be to make sure that everybody knows that they can be a part of his kingdom.
[21:30] Let's pray. Dear God, we want to thank you for Jesus. We want to thank you that he is such a different king, such a kind king, such a good king.
[21:43] And we want to thank you that your kingdom is different too. And we want to thank you that you can rule in our hearts and you can bring peace into our lives. And we want to pray right now that your kingdom will expand throughout the world to many, many places where people still have not heard that you are the king.
[22:04] Amen. You're welcome to go back and sit back with your families. Thank you, my king and my queen. We learned a new song at the beginning of the service at the top of page four.
[22:24] Mary had a baby. My Lord, King Jesus. Let's stand and sing together. Thank you.
[22:35] Thank you. Thank you.
