[0:17] And each one of us can say that with delight and conviction who's in Christ. And I just want to say thank you for the invitation from you to come and minister to you.
[0:33] And the opportunity to share the power of Christ that transformed my dead in sin and trespass's heart 15 years ago.
[0:49] Almost 16 years ago. And who would have thought that a drug-addicted, deadbeat dad would be preaching the Bible with joy in his heart all these years later.
[1:07] Except God knew his perfect plan would be accomplished. And so I thank you, Squamish Baptist Church, for the joy it is to feel like coming back home to a family meal to come to be with you again.
[1:24] And thank you for your support and your prayers for the past few years, number of years. And it is with that in mind, I offer hello and best wishes from Living Hope Bible Church in Victoria.
[1:43] Which is similar to Squamish, one of the bastions of darkness. In fact, I think it was voted as the witchcraft capital of the world not too long ago.
[1:57] Proudly, unfortunately. So, the smallest flickering light does its damage equally, no matter how dark the darkness is.
[2:08] And so the word of God doesn't return void to the Lord. To him, for the purpose for which he sent it to accomplish. And part of that is, right now, worshipping God.
[2:23] That was his will from before the foundation of the world. That this Sunday morning would include us worshipping him. And that's the flavor of what I want to talk to you about this morning.
[2:36] Who is the Lord of your Sabbath? And so, I want to invite you to turn with me in your copy of God's Word to Mark. The Gospel of Mark, chapter 2.
[2:48] We're going to be looking at verses 23 to 28. Mark, chapter 2.
[3:12] And I'm going to begin by reading those verses. Chapter 2, verses 23 to 28. Just in case you're wondering, I'll be reading the Legacy Standard Bible this morning and preaching from it.
[3:28] Verse 23. And it happened that he was passing through the grain fields on the Sabbath. And his disciples began to make their way along while picking the heads of grain.
[3:39] And the Pharisees were saying to him, look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath? And he said to them, have you never read what David did when he was in need?
[3:53] And he and his companions became hungry. How he entered the house of God around the time of Abiathar, the high priest. And ate the consecrated bread, which is not lawful for anyone to eat except the priests.
[4:06] And he also gave it to those who were with him. And Jesus was saying to them, the Sabbath was made for man and not man for the Sabbath.
[4:18] But consequently, the Son of Man is Lord, even of the Sabbath. When was the last time you had a really nice day off?
[4:35] And what did you do with that day? This day off. How long did it take after you were finished that day off to come back to work and say, I wish I could get another day off?
[4:49] And having rest, it seems, is as perpetual a healthy need as is having steady work. The Jews of Jesus' time looked at being righteous with God as a perpetual need for working.
[5:09] According to the law. Ironically highlighted with a day of rest. To achieve even another level of piety.
[5:24] That day, the Sabbath day, was the pinnacle of the Pharisees' legalism. Because keeping the Sabbath for them free of any work.
[5:36] And for all Jews, all of Israel, all of those under the Mosaic covenant. Was the outward visible sign of being in that covenant community.
[5:47] It was a sign of the covenant that Israel was under. This passage in Mark. It's a continuation through chapters 2 and 3.
[6:00] Of five major conflicts. That occurred between the Lord. Between our Lord and the Pharisees.
[6:11] This conflict is based on their legalistic view. Of the Sabbath. Being in conflict. With the purpose. For the Sabbath law given to Israel.
[6:24] And the authority of the one who gave that law. Sabbath breaking. Was the most common infraction.
[6:34] That they wrongly accused Jesus. Guilty of. And it was their precious pet peeve. It was their most enjoyable form of self-righteousness.
[6:51] It's easy to look good for them. They were looking good by doing nothing. It's ironic. And to be seen optically as pious.
[7:03] And also, it was also perhaps Jesus' most common area. Of addressing their heart issues. In Mark 2.
[7:17] Verses 23 to 28. There's three stages to this interaction. Between Jesus and the Pharisees. That escalates.
[7:28] That shows an escalation of this growing hostility. Towards Jesus. Moving them even further. To now wanting to kill Jesus. This isn't a theological debate.
[7:40] They want to kill him. This is where it's going. And so these three stages in this narrative. Show us that the incompatibility.
[7:51] Of works based legalism. Works righteousness. With the gospel of grace. And the Lord of grace. The authority of Jesus.
[8:03] Is once again here. Being a stumbling block. And it still is. A stumbling block. To people who admire their religious zeal.
[8:16] To keep old covenant laws. Everyone needs a day off. Once in a while. But every soul of mankind.
[8:27] Needs eternal rest. From what Paul would later say. Is an impossibility. To try to be self-righteous with God. This passage shows us.
[8:41] That if Jesus Christ. Is not the Lord of your rest. From trying to be a good enough person. To please God. And go to heaven. You will never have rest.
[8:52] Who is the Lord of your Sabbath. Let's look at these three stages. In the interaction. If you're taking notes. Here's the three points I have.
[9:04] From this passage. The self-righteous challenge. The self-righteous challenge. The scriptural response. And the divine rebuke.
[9:17] Verse 23. You can follow along with me. In your Bibles. Verse 23. This is the self-righteous challenge. And it happened. That he was passing through the grain fields.
[9:28] On the Sabbath. Now as I said. The Sabbath. Was the sign. Of the Mosaic covenant. You can read about that. In Exodus 31. Verse 16. And this was a covenant.
[9:40] That God made. With the people of Israel. At Mount Sinai. In fact. Sometimes it's more accurately. Called the Sinaitic covenant. Because it actually wasn't made with Moses.
[9:53] It was made with. The people of Israel. At Sinai. The Mosaic law. Which there were 613 laws. And those were summarized.
[10:05] In what we call the Decalogue. The Ten Commandments. That's a summary of the law. The Mosaic law. Was the instructions. For God's chosen people. Israel. Through.
[10:16] Given through Moses. To be blessed. In the land. Which God had called them. To enter. The Mosaic covenant. Was bilateral.
[10:29] It was not unilateral. The Mosaic covenant. Was conditional. It was not unconditional. The Mosaic covenant.
[10:40] Was nullifiable. It could be lost. Bilateral. Conditional. Nullifiable. The Mosaic covenant.
[10:51] Was a gracious covenant. To be sure. Every breath you take. Is gracious. But. It was never a means.
[11:02] Of salvation. Hebrews chapter 10. Verse 14. Makes that clear. What the law. Could not do. God. Did. Keeping the Mosaic covenant.
[11:15] Was the way that Israel. Would stay connected. To the blessings. Of the Abrahamic covenant. Which was unilateral. Unconditional. And irrevocable. Disobedience.
[11:27] Disobedience. To the Mosaic. Covenant. Led. To Israel's. Curses. Or exile. From the promised land.
[11:37] And. What we call. The great dispersion. Throughout the nations. And you can read about that. Blessing and curses. In Deuteronomy. Chapters. 28. And 29. The nation.
[11:49] Israel. Originally. Promised. To obey. The Mosaic covenant. Exodus 24. Verses 1 to 8. You might remember. They said. Preach it.
[12:00] Moses. All that you have said. All the Lord has commanded us. We will do it. However. They not only continually. Failed to obey the law.
[12:11] They perverted it. Into. A works. Righteousness. System. Adding. Man-made rules. Never intended by God. And you can read about that.
[12:23] In Romans 9. Verses 30 to 32. And at the same time. They perverted it. They also lost the heart. Of the covenant. Made it into purely.
[12:35] External. Ritual rules. Rules following. As Micah. Chapter 6. Talks about. In verses 6 to 8. Because Israel.
[12:47] Failed to keep. The Mosaic covenant. God promised. A better covenant. In Jeremiah 31. Verse 31.
[12:58] The problem. With that old covenant. Was not in the covenant. The problem. Was in the sinful hearts. Of all the people. In the end.
[13:11] Of the old. Mosaic covenant. Occurred. With. The death. Of Jesus. As he. Ushered in. The new. And better. Covenant. With his blood.
[13:24] Says. Luke 22. Verse 20. Romans 10. Verse 4. Tells us. For Christ. Is the end. Of the law. For righteousness.
[13:35] For everyone. Who believes. Christ. And now. Christ. Has become. Our peace. By. Ephesians 2. 14. Abolishing. The law.
[13:46] Of commandments. Expressed. In ordinances. And Hebrews. 8. Verse 13. Says. In speaking. Of a new covenant. He makes. The first one.
[13:56] The Mosaic covenant. Obsolete. And Romans. 8. Verse 3. For what the law. Could not do.
[14:07] Weak. As it was. Through the flesh. God. Did. God. Did. Sending. His own son. In the likeness. Of sinful flesh. And as an offering.
[14:18] For sin. He. Condemned. Sin. In the flesh. So that. And here's the best part. The righteous requirement. Of the law. Might be fulfilled.
[14:29] In us. Who do not walk. According to the flesh. But according to. The spirit. Through faith. In Christ. Because the Mosaic covenant. Was given to Israel.
[14:39] And Israel alone. Exodus 19. Verse 3. And Exodus 34. It was given to Israel. And since.
[14:50] Christ. Brought an end. To the covenant. With his death. Christians. Are not. Under the Mosaic covenant. And its laws.
[15:01] But that. Does not. For a millisecond. Mean. That any Christian. Has license. To sin. Ever. What is superior.
[15:15] About the new covenant. Is that in Christ. The believer. Is enabled. Enabled. By the spirit of God. Poured out in their hearts.
[15:25] To prefer. Obedience. To God. Over. Preferring. Sin. It's through. Saving faith. In Jesus Christ. That we become.
[15:35] Changed. Not in our. Perfection. But in our. Default. Position. To what we. Prefer. Our default. Position. Is now. That we hate.
[15:46] Sin. We don't love. Sin anymore. As our default. Now our default. Is. We hate. Sin. We now. Prefer. Righteousness.
[15:58] That's our. New. Nature. Because our. New. Nature. Is redeemed. Human. Nature. And redeemed. Humans. Prefer. Righteousness. To.
[16:09] Preferring. Sin. But we cannot. Ever. Trust. In our. Keeping. The law. Even though. The. The laws.
[16:19] That we read. In the old. Testament. Are not. Worthless. We know. The new. Testament. Teaches. All scripture. Every.
[16:31] Scripture. Is. Profitable. For training. And righteousness. But. We cannot. Trust. In that. Keeping. The law. Or. Being obedient.
[16:44] Checking. The boxes. Of things. We read. In the bible. To be right. With God. And there's a big. Difference. That's true. In terms of. Our justification. Being declared.
[16:54] Righteous. Before God. But also. In sanctification. If you walk. By the spirit. We will not. Carry out. The deeds.
[17:05] Of the flesh. We see. In the ten commandments. For example. The unchangeable. Character. Of God. We see.
[17:17] The heart. Of God. For his creatures. To be in right. Relationship. With him. You shall love. The Lord. Your God. With all your. Heart. Mind. Soul. And strength. And also.
[17:28] To be in right. Relationship. With others. Love your neighbors. As you love yourself. All of the ten commandments. Are restated. In the new testament.
[17:39] Except for. One. One exception. The sabbath law. Is not. In the new testament. As a command. To christians. In fact.
[17:51] The only times. The sabbath law. Is mentioned. In the new testament. Is with a view. Towards being freed. From keeping. This requirement. Specifically. Because christ.
[18:01] Has become. Our eternal rest. As was just read. In hebrews. Chapter four. And listen. To colossians.
[18:12] Chapter two. One of the. Magna. Cartus. Of christology. Therefore. Chapter two. Verse 16. In colossians. Therefore.
[18:22] No one. Is to judge you. In food. Or drink. You know. Those. Rules. About no bacon. Or in respect.
[18:33] To a festival. Or a new moon. Those are the. Jewish festivals. From the old testament. Or. A sabbath day. No one. Is to judge you. Verse 17.
[18:44] Things. Things which are only. A shadow. Of what is to come. But the substance. The thing casting. The shadow. Belongs to christ. And so.
[18:55] We should ask. Are you living in the shadow. Of works righteousness. Righteousness. Or are you living in the. Son. Of righteousness. Food laws.
[19:07] Like festivals. Like passover. And the sabbath. All of these things. Are lumped. Together. By paul. Because he says. They're merely. Shadows of the real thing. Which is.
[19:18] Christ. And since christ. Has now come. Observing the sabbath. Is no longer. A matter of. Obedience. Or disobedience.
[19:29] Instead. He says. Don't let anyone. Pass judgment. On you. And romans. The weaker. Brother. Chapter. Romans chapter. 14.
[19:40] Verse 5. Holds a similar. Striking claim. And where someone. Is still holding on. To commands.
[19:51] That were given. To ancient. Israel. As though the church. Is now supposed. To do the impossible. We are. To love. The weaker brother. And be patient. As they.
[20:03] Sit under. The word of God. Which does its work. And as they. Learn to behold. The glory of God. In the face of. Christ. Christ. And become.
[20:13] More like Christ. By doing so. And trust. More and more. On the sufficiency. Of Christ. Alone. In the old. Covenant scripture.
[20:27] Exodus. 31. 14. Says. Therefore. You shall. Keep the Sabbath. For it is holy. To you. That's Israel.
[20:38] Everyone. Who profanes it. Shall surely. Be put to death. For whoever. Does any work. On it. That person. Shall be cut off. From among his people.
[20:51] But again. Romans. 14. 4. Paul says. One person. Judges one day. Above another. Another judges. Every day. Alike. Each person.
[21:01] Must be fully convinced. In his own mind. If a Jew. According to the old. Covenant. Esteemed. Every day. Alike. He might be. Put to death. By rocks. Crushing his head.
[21:14] But Paul. Writing. Inerrant. Scripture. Did not. Impose. The Sabbath. Command. On Jewish. Converts. Or Gentile. Converts.
[21:24] In the church. But of course. There would be some. Coming out of those. Backgrounds. Who might feel. The. Tradition.
[21:36] Of their fathers. That we have to. Perpetuate this. That they want to. Respect their elders. That. At a time. That's. That's right.
[21:48] But now. In Christ. Something. Has changed. The new covenant. Has made the old covenant. Obsolete. But Paul. Didn't have. Issue.
[21:58] With those Christians. In the church. As long. As they didn't. Pressure. Other people. In the church. To imitate them. Or especially. Subversively.
[22:10] Going. Around. The teaching. From scripture. From the apostle. Which was giving. Who was giving. Inerrant. Authoritative. Divine truth.
[22:20] To the church. He didn't. Pressure people. In the church. Who were still. Holding on. To those traditions. As long. As they. Weren't. Trying to tell people. That they.
[22:31] Must. Obey the Sabbath. Or they're sinning. Especially. Suggesting. That salvation. Hinged on that. Sabbath. Obedience.
[22:44] And. Galatians. Galatians. 4. Verse 9. Paul writes. But now. Having known.
[22:54] God. You who are. In Christ. Or rather. Having been. Known. By God. Which is a more. Accurate description. How is it. That you turn.
[23:05] Back again. To the weak. And worthless. Elemental things. Religiosity. Things. To which. You want to be. Enslaved. All over again.
[23:16] You observe. Days. And months. And seasons. And years. I fear for you.
[23:27] That perhaps. I've labored. Over you. For nothing. The Sabbath. Here's another point.
[23:38] Under this. Sabbath. Is not. Sunday. Now. Today. Many Christians. Who speak. Of the Sabbath. Refer to it. As Sunday.
[23:48] Not. Saturday. It's getting. Awfully quiet. In here. Keep tracking.
[24:00] No. New Testament. Writer. Ever. Referred. To Sunday. As the Sabbath. And if. There were some. Jewish converts. In the early church. Who felt the need. To observe Sabbath.
[24:10] They did so. On Saturday. According to. Jewish tradition. Not. On Sunday. Christians. Christians. Have always. Gathered. To worship. On the Lord's day.
[24:23] All the gospel. Writers. Said so. Including Paul. That's Matthew. Verse. Chapter 28. Mark. Chapter 16. Luke.
[24:34] Chapter 24. Verse 1. And John. Chapter 20. Over and over. Over and over again. The New Testament. Makes it clear. That Christians. Gathered. To worship.
[24:44] On Sunday morning. But this does not. Mean. That they necessarily. Took the day off. In fact. It wasn't until. Constantine.
[24:56] Made Sunday. A day of rest. Across the Roman Empire. In the 4th century. A.D. In Ephesus. Paul.
[25:07] Met with the church. The Ephesians. On the first day. Of the week. To break bread. You remember. Acts. Chapter 20. Verse 7. They met on the first day.
[25:19] Of the week. To break bread. That's Sunday. Likewise. Paul. Instructed the Corinthians. To set aside some money. On the first day. Of every week. Implied.
[25:30] When they gather. For worship. First Corinthians. 16. Verse 2. None of these passages. Show the early church. Resting. As if they considered. Sunday.
[25:41] Their new Sabbath. One writer. Goes so far. As to write. For the earliest Christians. It was not. A substitute. For the Sabbath. Nor a day of rest. Nor related.
[25:51] In any way. To the fourth commandment. And another commentator. Pithley states. It this way. The world. The devil.
[26:02] The devil. Would have us work. Even while we rest. But Jesus. Would have us rest. Even while we work. I got an amen.
[26:13] All right. The word will do its work. For the writer of Hebrews. Writes. We who have believed.
[26:25] We just read it. We who have believed. Is that you? Enter that rest. Hebrews 4.
[26:36] Verse 3. Not will enter. But enter. Fully. Later. In glory. But truly. Now. In Christ. And how do we enter?
[26:49] How do we enter that rest? Not mainly by taking a day off. To be righteous. But. By believing. Trusting. Upon Christ. Which is not an intellectual assent.
[27:00] I believe that's true. I guess I'll start going to church. But a personal commitment. From your heart. I love. The fact that I cannot be right with God. But I love.
[27:12] The fact that. I am right with. Christ. With God. On the basis of Christ's perfect righteousness. That every. Sin. I have ever committed. And ever will commit.
[27:23] Is covered. Under the blood of Christ. Does that. Make you say. I love that. That's what faith is. We who have believed.
[27:35] Enter that rest. And that same writer says. Faith in Jesus Christ. Brings the rest. Of the seventh day. Or the Sabbath day. Into every day.
[27:46] The fact of the matter. Is scripture teaches. That the Sabbath. Has been fulfilled. In Christ. And that our Sabbath rest.
[27:56] Is when we place. Our faith in Christ. We are freed. From the works of the law. As a means. To be right with God. Every day. Should be. A Sabbath rest.
[28:07] From works. Righteousness. Every moment. Of that Sabbath rest. Should be. A laying down. Of self effort.
[28:18] And a trusting. In Christ. Obedience. From the heart. Every single day. Should be. Freedom. From the law. Galatians 5. 1. It's for freedom.
[28:29] That Christ. Set us free. That doesn't mean. That it's necessary. That we work. Every day. Now. We should be. Working all the time. And whatever you do.
[28:41] Do. Take that day off. Whenever you do. Take that day off. It. It. It doesn't matter. Which day of the week. It is. Nowadays.
[28:53] It's easy for us. To work. Anywhere. Anytime. All the places. We go. All the time. And that's a temptation. Some of you.
[29:04] Will know what I mean. It's a temptation. To work. Too much. The creation. Pattern. This is where. The Sabbath came. The creation. Pattern.
[29:15] To take one day. And seven. To rest. Genesis chapter 2. This is wisdom. For the entire. Human race. All mankind. It would be.
[29:26] Indeed foolish. To work. Every single day. For the rest of your life. Without ever taking. Rest. But let's go back. To verse 23.
[29:37] And see what happened here. With the disciples. And Jesus. On the Sabbath. His disciples. Began to make their way along. While picking the heads of grain. The accusation here.
[29:48] Is that they were harvesting. Food. Considered work. But they were. Permitted. To pluck the grains. For food. By taking just as much. As they needed.
[29:59] With their thumb and finger. As much as they needed. To fill their bellies. And it wasn't considered. Work. So the. Verse 24. The Pharisees.
[30:09] Were saying to him. Look. Why are they doing. What's not lawful. On the Sabbath. There are two. Possible infractions. Here. That the Pharisees.
[30:20] Were harping on. It was permitted. According to. Rabbinic. Tradition. To walk. To walk. A certain. Number of steps. On the Sabbath.
[30:31] But not a single. Step. More. Okay. Many of you. Have a watch. Or a phone. I played that game.
[30:42] For a short time. Where it counts. Your steps. And. The rabbinic. Tradition. Was. Twelve. Hundred. Steps.
[30:52] On the Sabbath. If you walked. Twelve. Hundred. Steps. You were. Disobeying. This command. The law. Of God.
[31:03] If you walked. One thousand. One hundred. And ninety. Nine. You had to stop. At the position. Of attention. And not. Take another. Step. And.
[31:15] I know. Some of you. On those. Apps. Get brownie. Points. For how many. Steps. You can rack up. But. For the Pharisees. On this day. It would have. Sounded an alarm.
[31:26] At twelve. Hundred. Steps. Cease. And desist. The text. Explicitly. Mentions. That they were.
[31:36] Plucking. Heads. And so. That's most. Likely. The Sabbath. Breaking. Law. That they were. Attacking. Jesus. And his. Disciples. For. And actually. They didn't have. A problem.
[31:47] With what the. Disciples. Were doing. Just that. They were doing. It. On this. Sabbath. Day. A day. Where no work. Is to be done. So they assumed. This was work. Assume.
[32:00] Never assume. They were not. Thinking the best. Of anyone. Except themselves. They were not. Thinking the best. Of. The great shepherd.
[32:13] The shepherd. Of their. The people. Of Israel. And so. And. Instead of. Asking. The greatest. Teacher. Whoever lived.
[32:24] Instead of. Asking Jesus. To teach them. From his. Perspective. Why he was. Thinking. What he was. Thinking. And doing. What he was. Doing. Instead of. Asking him. To learn. Something.
[32:36] They ask him. To rebuke him. It's rhetoric. The art of. Persuasion. They ask him. This. Chiding. Rhetorical. Question. Assuming.
[32:47] As many. Legalists do. It's not. Possible. And I could. Be wrong. Here. I might. Be able. To learn. Something. They assume. That the Lord. God. Is. Guilty.
[33:00] Without. Hearing. His case. Proverbs. 18. 13. Forbids. That. Something. Like. How. Could. They. Do. That. And more.
[33:10] Specifically. How. Could. You. As a. Godly. Man. Allow. Your. Your. Shepherding. Advice. To let. Them. Do that. Encourage. Them. To do that. They were.
[33:20] Not. Asking. A question. To learn. Something. They were. Asking. A question. To parade. Their. Theology. Which. They were. Proud of. While.
[33:31] At the same. Time. Vilifying. The Lord's. Flawless. Theology. And. Sinless. Practice. They're. More. Concerned.
[33:41] With. Jesus. His. Behavior. Than. His. Disciples. Behavior. Theology. Anyone's. Theology. Does. Not. Have. Authority.
[33:51] On. Par. With. The word. Of. God. Rightly. Understood. What. The word. Of. God. Actually. Says. And. What. It means. By. What. It says. Trump's.
[34:02] All. Authority. Because. Not. Because. It's just. Better. Than. Other. Authorities. Although. That is. Certainly. True. Because. It. Is. Infallible. Authority. And.
[34:14] No. Other. Authority. Is. Infallible. But. The word. Of. God. Is. Jesus. Reminds. Them. About. The. Authority. Of. Scripture. But.
[34:25] Only. When. Rightly. Understood. Why. Is. This. So. Important. Why. Do. I. Keep. Saying. It. Like. That. Because. The. Bible. Is. Not. A. Book. Of. Spells. Or. Incantations.
[34:36] That. If. You. Simply. Quote. It. It. It. Will. Come. To. Pass. Like. The. Words. Have. Mystical. Power. I. Mean. Satan. Quoted. Scripture. Accurately.
[34:47] Though. With. Deception. In. Mind. The. Bible. Is. God. Speaking. It. Is.
[34:58] Divine. Truth. The. Source. Of. Scripture. Is. God. So. The. Source. Of. Scripture. Is. Infallible. Because. God. Is. Infallible. Psalm. 138. 2. Says. Your.
[35:08] Word. Is. Exalted. As. High. As. Your. Name. What. Makes. Scripture. Infallible. Is. Its. Source. God. Is. Infallible. When. Scripture. Speaks.
[35:19] God. Speaks. Do. You. Listen. Do. You. Ask. Questions. To. Learn. He. Simply. Says. Haven't. You.
[35:29] Read. The. Bible. Your. Theology. Your. Systematic. Theology. Does. Not. Have. It. Has. Some. Authority. To. Be. Sure. But.
