[0:00] I said much about the Holy Spirit. And I feel remiss about that. I think he's more important than just about a little thing to find. And yet, he flies in the way it all to think about it.

[0:12] And I just got made him one little truth. I don't want to hammer away at him. I want you to get it and remember it.

[0:23] It's very important. And Esther, especially for you, it's not justice for you, but you won't have dad to run to, or uncle, or mom, or anybody else up here.

[0:40] But if you'll get what I'm teaching tonight and practice it, you'll be taken care of very, very well. As a matter of fact, Coach, one reason that you see a lot of Christians having a lot of problems is what I'm going to talk about tonight.

[1:00] You can absolutely cut down on most of the problems if you get this. All right. Galatians 5.22. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, also translated kindness in some places.

[1:22] goodness is what it says. Good. Faith, meekness, a type of humility, temperance, self-control.

[1:35] Against such there is no law. Now, do you understand that the fruit of the Spirit means the fruit that the Spirit produces in you?

[1:49] You don't produce the fruit. If He has His way with you, He will produce these things in your life, the fruit of the Spirit.

[2:01] Now, we'll talk first tonight about the personality of the Holy Spirit. I don't mean the perfect truth of the Holy Spirit. We all know that He's merciful. All three of them are merciful.

[2:15] Do you have any trouble thinking about God and the Spirit and the person? they're spirits. Jesus has got a body. It's a little easier to think about Him than a lack of a bud.

[2:27] But God is a Spirit. The Spirit is a Spirit. But they're still people. The real you is a Spirit. That real personal that's inside your body is a Spirit.

[2:43] When you die, the body dies, but that Spirit lives on. and so we're made in His name. We're all the Spirit. But when we don't have a body, the negative, maybe it's hard to think of the Holy Spirit as a person.

[2:58] But He is a person, not just an influence. Just as the Father and Jesus are a person. What I think about personal personality is what kind of a person is He?

[3:10] Is He loud or quiet? Is He a slow to anger or quick and tempered? What kind of a person is He? Personality of the Spirit. Well, when Jesus was here, the Holy Spirit was here and there.

[3:31] But when Jesus went back, He sent the Holy Spirit with a mission to take over for Him, Jesus. And He put the Spirit in every Christian body.

[3:48] If you're a born-again saint, you have the Holy Spirit right here tonight living inside you. You're in the temple of the Holy Spirit. The dwelling place of the Holy Spirit.

[4:01] The place is. And I'm thinking of your idea about the temple of the Holy Spirit. I'm not even going to get into that. You have a good talk right there. Temple, what is a temple?

[4:13] It's a place of worship. And I guess I wouldn't get into it. In a book He wrote recently that I have proofreaded, He brought out that place of worship is a temple.

[4:28] And if you are the temple of the Holy Spirit, people ought to be able to worship God better than they get around you. Good idea.

[4:40] Yeah, you didn't thought of that before, had you? This guy here thought of that. He came to earth to represent the interests of Jesus and to promote Jesus.

[4:53] And so he's not described himself but to the Bible. He wanted to take the back seat and promote Jesus. you don't see much about him really.

[5:06] It just names him and says he's here and there. He doesn't tell much about him. He seems to want to remain anonymous so that he doesn't take glory away from Jesus.

[5:17] Now, that's very important. These people who make the Holy Spirit from him, that's not biblical. That's not biblical.

[5:28] he didn't ever want to be prominent. These tongue speakers, for instance, they may be speaking in tongues by some spirit but he's not going to be here.

[5:42] He's never going to promote himself like that. There's a lot of other ways that people make the Holy Spirit too prominent. He's going to be there. He wants to elevate Jesus.

[5:53] He wants you to do all the things. Now, then, what kind of person is he? What is his personality? Look back at our text again. By the way, keep your life.

[6:04] Don't you think if we look at the fruit that he bears in our life, we can find something about the person that he bears?

[6:17] That's it. Don't you think so? Absolutely. I would say he's a loving person. What do you think? I would say he promotes joy. Right?

[6:29] Peace. I know he's connected with peace because in the form of a dove, he came and landed on Jesus and the dove is a symbol of peace. Long suffering.

[6:41] Thank God long suffering. I grieved him and wished him too many times. And it had to be long suffering to be placed in your and my body.

[6:53] And to stay there through thinking then. Don't you know there's a lot of times he wishes he could get out of you. I know there's times he wishes he could leave me for a lot of bread.

[7:10] You probably too. He's got to be long suffering and he's patient with people. Gentleness, he's going to produce gentleness in you.

[7:20] He's going to be gentle. Goodness, faith, humility, meaning this. All these things are positive traits.

[7:34] You didn't notice anything there about wrath or anger. all these are gentle characteristics. So we get a lot of an idea of what his personality is.

[7:49] Now, I said that the dove was a symbol of peace and is a symbol of the spirit. Do you know what bird God referred to himself as in those dead?

[8:03] Anybody know? The eagle. eagle's very different when a dove is eagle. Eagle tear you up one.

[8:15] Eagle's got claws. A dove doesn't have claws. Eagle's got a beak that rips meat. And he's got these eyes that look like they're angry all the time.

[8:32] God was in charge in the Old Testament. God the Father was in charge. The Bible said that God, in the Old Testament, God is angry with the wicked every day.

[8:50] When God was on the earth in charge, he stayed mad all time. And he didn't put up the money. I mean, somebody attacked his preacher and the ground opened up and everybody fell in.

[9:06] Went straight to hell. That's pretty bad. On many occasions, he said, wipe them all out. Men, women, children, babies, everybody.

[9:21] I have a problem with that. Don't you? I can't see Jesus doing it. You say, well, they're all the same. No, they're not. They have distinct personalities, distinct roles to play.

[9:36] But all those times when God just, you know, we say, I'm glad we're not going to do it. You better be. you didn't mess with the Father.

[9:50] Now, he is loved and all that to him. But he has a side. My sermon, the other side of God. People don't think about that. He's still in charge, by the way.

[10:03] You still make him mad. The wrath of God is all through that Bible. God, we need to think about that.

[10:16] Do you know why? I'm just going to use this to hand help. Yes, sir. Do you know why God doesn't exhibit his wrath and anger so much?

[10:32] Where is Jesus? Right-handed Father. Is there any particular reason he happens to take his place?

[10:43] As soon as he got up there, he took his place inside God. Yeah, there's been a lot of times when God said, I'm going to like him.

[10:58] I'm tired of that. And Jesus said, oh, I went down there and suffered. And I died.

[11:08] and I stayed and I asked him over God. That's why you don't see the wrath of God.

[11:18] God's the same. God's still angry. He's angry with the wicked and everything. He didn't change. God's still But Jesus is keeping him off of us. You better thank God for that.

[11:34] Remember how Moses and God argued over whether to kill all of his last night? God said, step out of the way, Moses. I'm going to kill them all. I'll start over with you.

[11:45] And Moses said, no, no, don't do that. And the next time you see Moses said, kill them all, God. I'm tired of it. God said, no, I couldn't not do that. Somebody said, God, Moses never got together on that.

[11:58] Thank God they didn't get mad at the same time. But Jesus went up there to intercede with you.

[12:12] We still make God mad. Jesus keeps them all up. Now you hear about the wrath of God. all through the Old Testament. And Jesus got mad two or three times.

[12:26] You don't ever find the anger of the Lord here. I don't know. I don't know if he's killed. That's why the Lord said, I'm going to protect him.

[12:41] Don't you bring him. Because he's not going to find that. You see that one characteristic temperance, long suffering.

[12:54] He is a very embodiment of long suffering. He never fights back. He never gets mad. Now that's going to play into what I'm teaching you right.

[13:06] So keep that in mind. He never gets angry. He's incapable of anger. As far as I can see, I'm not sure. God, I don't know.

[13:21] He's probably equally love and wrath. I think he's probably evil. Jesus stands more on the love side.

[13:35] But he has the name. He's mostly love. With a little name. step down one more step. That's one way of thinking of the three.

[13:50] As far as their personality. Now don't leave me. I'm just setting this up. Okay? Some of you are actually not listening to me. It's going to be for you. Right.

[14:02] Now then, so what are we concluding about personality? He is very sensitive to meekness, gentleness.

[14:17] You want to hurt somebody kind of a gentleman child. The gentleman personality. You hurt them more than you do to these little kids who don't give up really. They'll throw something back at you.

[14:31] Different personality than trying. The gentler and the meeker you are the more easily hurt you are. And you parents that have different kinds of kids, you keep that in mind, you don't treat them all the same.

[14:49] If the Lord gives you one of those little meek ones that you know that is easy hurt, don't you ride a little shower on him and treat him him. You don't have to be mean!

[15:02] to do! to do! And she said that all the rest of us can't be scared to death of that guy.

[15:17] Said he was mean. And said it wasn't unusual to see one of the other boys running and Roy chasing him with a hammer. and said Roy had caught him.

[15:29] No doesn't have many knots he had on the head with that hammer. But the whole family knew you didn't cross Roy. And so Papa spent most of his time beating up Roy.

[15:46] And Roy would say that didn't hurt. Hit again. He was rough man. And he really got a lot of whooping.

[16:01] But he turned out so good. Mother said I'm so proud of my brother Roy. He was a singer.

[16:12] He was a great Christian man. And I didn't go to other way. And I watched him talk to see him we know at church and we both were songs.

[16:26] He said such a good move for the sermon. I'm trying to imagine that guy chasing a rubber mackerel. So everybody's different, right?

[16:39] And your children are different. Yeah, have you noticed it? Don't be as rough on the gentlemen. You learn them. The only spirit is one of gentlemen that you can hurt them.

[16:53] You can hurt them. Grieve not the Holy Spirit. He grieves. I heard a sermon one time years ago about a man from Carolina on grieving the spirit.

[17:10] And he said I studied that and studied and studied it. And he said the idea behind that word is he weeps until there's no more care.

[17:21] he feels more deeply than you can even describe him. And what grieves him is your sin. You read that verse do not grieve the spirit read the context it's all about how wicked we are and how all sin we are and every time you sin with the Holy Spirit excited you he is grieving he's hurt he'll never leave you with his!

[17:50] so we understand that he's very sensitive and this is it I'm getting down to this is it he's easy to drive away he's easy to drive away I've said earlier this is the reason through!

[18:37] this little talk by invitation only.

[18:51] Only time you have a little spirit help is when you ask him. Jesus was a little bit like that. Jesus takes characteristics of both of them.

[19:07] Remember when Jesus was on the water walking. He was going to pass by that boat then. It said there, he would have passed on by but they begged him to come back in the boat. Remember the mass disciples?

[19:23] He would have gone on but they begged him to stay for supper. Now the Holy Spirit is totally like that. You have to beg him to stay.

[19:37] And Lisa and Esther, that's where I want you to realize you've got to constantly be begging him to stay. because you will make some mistakes.

[19:48] You will get mad at somebody. The occasion is going to get to you. They got to be when I was down there five years.

[19:59] I paid it at me. And he'll walk. You can drive him away. That's the point. He's not automatically there.

[20:10] There is a Jesus introduced the Holy Spirit to us in John 14 and 15 and 16.

[20:22] Four times he called him in those chapters. What did he call it? Comfort. Comfort. That's a little misleading just to think that's all he is.

[20:33] That word in the original language is paraclete. Actually paracletos if you want to play it in Greek but in English it's paraclete not parakeet.

[20:49] But the word paraclete and cleat is a is a is in the family of the word kaleo which means to call.

[21:02] Hear that word kaleo it almost sounds like call doesn't it? And in the Scoville Bible for instance you'll find it you'll find it where the word that's translated comfort paracletos paracletos means one called alongside to aid you.

[21:22] That's that's what he that's his name. You've got to call him alongside to help you. He's not all that that's why you've gotten in so much trouble and wondered if I didn't I didn't have that one why did the Lord have that one because you had driven the spirit away or you hadn't asked him to go with you.

[21:45] Now this is a very important thought very important he'll never force himself onto you and he's easily driven away he must be invited he must be invited he will steal away at any hand he does not want him or will you let sin in his life I told you this one time before I remember telling you I got it in his notes Henry Ford was an old man and he was driving down the road one day and he came across a guy that was working on one of his hot model A4 had the hood up you know and he walked up this old man walked up to the governor and said sir could I lend you some assistance and the man said no man I'll take care of this I don't need you there was the guy that he wanted to buy that car and he wanted to buy to murder because he's the one that designed the building and Henry Ford didn't say one word he didn't say sir do you know who I am

[22:57] I can fix your problem whatever it is he didn't say anything he just quietly got back in his car and drove away now that's the Holy Spirit you can easily find him away but you have to invite him you have to invite him you ever had the Holy Spirit maybe in your heart and you thought that he was speaking to you I don't know he doesn't speak in an audible voice but you know when he speaks have you ever ignored him as much as say I don't think I want to do that I'll take care of this myself he quietly and I don't truth he took his wife and he was trying to get you to understand I am your creator I can fix that but you didn't want him part he can't go now until you get him back you're in you say wait a minute he's inside yeah

[24:09] I know he is he's in there for two or three reasons to seal you be sure that nobody can get to your soul right he's in there for a reason but that reason you find to help you it's to protect you your soul your spirit he doesn't say anything about me in there to help you physically in life he does not automatically look for your problems and bail you out that's not him that's not his personality he has got to be invited I looked up that word it's not it's it's translated comforter four times and advocate one time talking about Jesus but most of the time it's the word beseech are big and you look it up at Strong's and say the meaning is to invite you have to invite him you gotta invite him

[25:28] I wanna show you something here I think I'm ready for it let's go to the book back I turned back to the book back I heard here we got started early and I wouldn't quit her I wanna show her something here and then we're gonna make a statement that's probably not rude in in Acts 19 Paul is on his third missionary journey Acts 19 verse 21 he just come from Ephesus and they had a big to do up there and this is where Selah and you seven sons of Selah tried to cast out demons and so on right after that in verse 21 after these things were ended

[26:30] Paul purposed in the spirit now that's a small s notice that that means he made up his mind that was his spirit not God's spirit have you ever made up your mind and it's awful hard to change you I mean you're stubborn the rest of you are too sometimes we all get stubborn don't what are you looking at him for Paul was stubborn right there right there in 1921 not the year 1921 but Acts 1921 go ahead and smile in order Paul decided in his mind in his heart I'm going to Jerusalem now he just made up his mind right there alright now we go to chapter 20 verse 16 for Paul had determined to sail by

[27:34] Ephesus because he would not spend the time in Asia for he hasted if it were possible for him to be at Jerusalem the day of Pentecost I'm going to be at Jerusalem I hope I can get there from Pentecost and I'm going to leave off some things that I might want to do I might go back to Ephesus again but I'm going to stop at Miletus which call those preachers down and have a meeting with them at moment I want to do I'm determined to go all right now look at Acts 20 22 20 22 Paul talking now behold I go bound in the spirit now what spirit is that small s or big x small s right that's still his own mind his own determination his own spirit I mean I am bound I am bound to go you don't stop he is bound in the spirit unto

[28:36] Jerusalem not knowing the things that shall be for me there save that the Holy Ghost witnesses! in every city saying that bonds and afflictions divide me every town he been in somebody warned him through the Holy Spirit don't you go to!

[28:55] Jerusalem it says the Holy Ghost over you ever ignore him all just flat out ignore him watch verse 24 none of these things blew me neither I count my life here or myself he's thinking of being really no magnanimous I don't want to die maybe God didn't want him to die I know one thing God didn't want me to Jerusalem I know that I don't have done any markets off you think Paul would know it when everybody ever walked up to said Paul Holy Spirit telling me you don't go to Jerusalem but he opened up his mind 21 fold now he's a tire he's already come across the man he's landed on the the culture in which

[29:56] Israel the part of the country in which we is he's a tire for verse four and five new disciples we tarried there seven days and these disciples that tire who said to Paul through the Spirit that he should not go!

[30:10] to Jerusalem everywhere he goes it's the same story is God trying to keep him going here is look at verse 10 now of chapter 21 as we tarried there now they're in Caesarea as we tarried there many days there came down from Judea a certain prophet named Agabus and when he was come unto us he took Paul's girdle and bound his own hands and feet and said thus saith the holy goat so shall the Jews in Jerusalem find the land and own this girdle deliver him into the hands of Gentiles holy spirit is getting even more detail about what's wrong with Jerusalem when we heard these things both we that's Luke and all the company and they of that place they of all the Christians besought him begged him not to go up to

[31:14] Jerusalem they all knew the holy spirit said then Paul answered what mean ye to break my heart I'm ready not I'll be bound on you but all you die and when he would not be persuaded we ceased!

[31:34] saying the will of the Lord be done! He went up there without the Holy Spirit because he just drove him away!

[31:51] What happened to him when he got he was captured turned over to the Gentiles just like he said there spent years in jail now the Lord had to turn it around for good but I have an idea that Paul would have an oh so much easier job than what God wanted to do if he listened to the Holy Spirit and not on!

[32:22] He would win freedom to do what the Lord wanted him to do now he created his prisoner right? You ever done that? Do you know why they captured him?

[32:38] Had their way with him? Treated him terrible? Because Lord He is very broken back. He drove him away. Is that what you want?

[32:53] Is that what you want? And that was Paul brother that's not one of us. If Paul can drive him away don't you think he can?

[33:07] Alright you need wisdom Holy Spirit can fill you full of it. You need healing?

[33:22] There are tons of Christians who don't get healed because they driven the Spirit away or you know this have you noticed have you heard it that everybody that was ever brought to Jesus in the New Testament was evil?

[33:41] Did he ever turn away anybody? Then why did everybody else be healed? The Holy Spirit took Jesus place. If Jesus could heal everybody that brought to him you think the Holy Spirit did?

[33:59] You know why some folks are healthy than others?! Yeah they have better genes They have better relationship with them. Ever need comfort or finances or family problem solved or whatever He's a quiet peaceful dove and while you're arguing with your family he just might have to go and you're going to have to beg him to come back and he'll fix it Samson thought he could do it alone didn't he and wish not that word wish means do not that the spirit had departed!

[34:45] What happened to Samson and the spirit departed? It didn't go very good with him He didn't even know the spirit departed!

[34:57] He didn't he he's so gentle and peaceful and kind and just grips him he's like like Henry boy he gets his guard in him I hope you're getting this most of the problems that we have don't you not look read your Bible and I remind God this every week look at all the times you said you want to be involved!

[35:28] calling me and I'll actually show you great and mighty things he wants to do that there's nothing too hard for God all things are possible to God he wants to be involved in our life he's begging us to let him be involved in our life but the one on site down here to do it is the spirit not the follower and he senses easily driven away and easily grieve God wants to do it but we've got to understand that I've got to have a relationship with the Holy Spirit I've got to get sin out of my life so he's not free!

[36:41] cross town I wouldn't go without seeing no experience I need to drive with him remember that young lady that she was a two big girl for our first two granddaughters and I hadn't told this in a while but when William left him Rachel was two and a half and Sarah was one year old when we went down to Mexico took all to all we took care of her years old and said you know I've got a college degree and I didn't have these kids I'm going to get a job and so she found a job up in Wisconsin teaching school and they took all to get to she got the wrong all was carrying on under the hood you get hurt pulled into a

[37:49] Thursday and had a camp he looked at it and he said well you go on the last mile you train motor long she said I got to get to what was that place outside Manhattan out in the western side there but some of out there!

[38:10] he said you won't get there in his car she said I don't have to get the car and I gotta go he said lady won't even run she said I gotta go she got back in the car started sound like a soldier she got back on the freeway took off north drove all the way the thing ran like a rented!

[38:39] pulled into the driveway clatter clatter clatter clatter had to be no God the Holy Spirit can do that for every one of us and wants to and God is saying nothing too far from me nothing impossible for me calling me I'll show you things you don't even have to have this he he is able to exceed above all we can ask for why do you think all the verses are in there he's begging us to use them in his power but the one of the god dead that's here to use is the Holy Spirit and you can drive him away so he's and even if you don't have sin in your life he still has to be invited he only comes he wants to know if you need you better catch this now it'll change your life you get this conscience can tell you when you're wrong but it can never tell you what to do better that's all it can do it is clang clang clang clang clang this is not right clang clang no remedy at all and the

[40:02] Bible gives you some general principles but what you need is Holy Spirit to get it perceptically through he'll do that if you invite you he never forces himself on you you have to invite him every day any time during the day for every task or problem or need you've got to be careful don't ignore him he's sensitive if he doesn't think you want him around he's gone invite him into every area and activity of your life often and regularly be be friendly talk to him remember that lesson one time about talking to the Holy Spirit thanking him telling him you love him he gets the idea you wish to go to the mall he'll let you we sing my Jesus I love thee and Jesus loves me the love of God is greater far than not any songs about the love of the Spirit and yet the Bible says he loves us in Romans 15 13

[41:03] I think I told you this in another sermon baby Sunday's wife was called Mausunday she lived a long time after he died in 1935 and a lot of the people that I know you know knew her and talked to her about him and she said the strangest thing about Billy William Billy see he's always talking and see he's carrying on a conversation with the Holy Spirit and he would just throw in a conversation with me she said he talked to both of us at the same time and she said holy Billy I don't know which one we talked to right there and he had to explain what he was saying to her and she said he constantly kept up a conversation with the is that why the guy was so great to you powerful and preaching is there any connection there's there's not any of us that keep throwing up a run running conversation with him all the time so that somebody else can talk to them to talk to them there's always a reason folks there's always a reason all right

[42:37] I'm coming down to the end here church unity depends on the Holy Spirit every church that ever busted itself drove the Holy Spirit out because the Bible says keep the unity of the Spirit in the mind there's one Spirit that names seven things sevenfold unity is what Scofield called it and before he names the Father or Jesus he names the Spirit talking about church unity if you and I are going to stay together we better not grieve the Spirit because when we do the devil will bust us without any problem the unity of the Spirit okay let's see I wanted to go there and show you I don't have time I tore out some pages out of the book of the rations that I have illustrations that he used and I want to read a couple of those and wait for that in a little town in southwest

[43:42] Texas I went to Bible services for a young married woman came greatly distressed she said she feared she was not saved she had no joy no happiness no God preached her and she saw her trouble when she had lived in the country and attended country church she went happily and boldly among her friends and neighbors when he sold and God had given her a number of when she moved into the city it was a little town actually she felt self-conscious and inferior being a country girl surely these town people are going to mad at me if I try to talk to them about Jesus watch this sentence right here so when the spirit of God spoke to her heart she would argue that she was too ignorant and she dared not be conspicuous the next sentence she said after a while the spirit didn't speak to me anymore after a while the more impression the more meaning

[45:02] I can do it seemed like God had forsaken me I wondered if I would even save she quenched the spirit the spirit led her and she said no not going to do that he was gone when her resistance to the spirit of God was removed and she confessed and humbled herself and was willing to listen to the spirit of God and began again to follow his leading all the joy and the consciousness of God's presence came back that's exactly what I said I'm saying exactly!

[45:40] exactly! saved people do it all the time folks unsaved people do it it's the most dangerous thing to do the spirit can lead an unsaved person to return and if he never returns they can't get saved isn't that scary here is a picture of what happened it's just a picture of it's another illustration of it I well remember a man who came from the tabernacle of Dallas Texas one Sunday night with a despondent face announced in the paper that preached on broken hearts and broken homes he saw the subject came!

[46:18] after a little tender broken he told this story he said brother I said I leave my wife she's been an invalid for years I spent all my money on her I never looked at another woman I spent no money for clothes I gave her everything she asked for I loved her so I put up with everything she did she scolded me she nagged me but I excused her because she got to where she would slap my face and pull my hair and scream at me and I never lifted the hand against her this went on for you yesterday I gave it all up I don't hate her I don't wish her to heal I just don't ever want to see her again I never saw such despair written on man's face as but little by little his heart seemed to open to the truth I told him that all the trouble weary in heart should come to

[47:21] Jesus find rest I told him the master come call for him in sorrow here anybody loved him to see him find! the doors of his heart sad heart open he by faith!
