[0:00] Seeking the Lord's blessing, then, let's turn together to the prophecy of Habakkuk, chapter 2, and reading again at verse 2.
[0:11] Habakkuk 2, verse 2, And the Lord answered me, Write the vision, make it plain on tablets, so he may run who reads it.
[0:24] For still the vision awaits its appointed time. It hastens to the end, it will not lie. If it seems slow, wait for it.
[0:35] It will surely come, it will not delay. Behold, his soul is puffed up. It is not upright within him, but the righteous shall live by his faith.
[0:57] As you're probably aware, this narrative is presented like a question and answer. And Habakkuk is presenting two questions to God.
[1:10] And God is responding with two answers. This prophecy is unusual in the sense that most, if not all, of the other prophets, when they come with a word from God, they are addressing the people.
[1:32] Habakkuk is addressing God. He's addressing God. And he's asking God some very serious questions.
[1:44] And the two questions that he's asking God is this. Does God hear? And does God see? And I want, for the time that we have, to deal with those questions and with those answers, but particularly to deal with the response to the second question.
[2:09] Just words of introduction in terms of Habakkuk, the prophet. He was seeing something very serious in Judah.
[2:22] This was the problem that he saw and his complaint against God. He was a contemporary of Jeremiah.
[2:33] And that should give us a clue to some of the background narrative to this prophecy. And Habakkuk was alive, perhaps, around the reign of Jehoiakim.
[2:48] And you can read some of that narrative for yourselves in 2 Kings 23. So, here was a prophet of God.
[2:58] His name, Habakkuk, means the embracer of God, or one who clings to God. One who clings to God.
[3:11] But here he is. Here he is, as it were, standing before God. And he's saying, does God hear? Hear, O Lord, how long shall I cry for help?
[3:23] And you will not hear. In the original language, these words mean this. Why are you not doing something, God?
[3:37] Why are you not doing something? Notice the way God answers the first question. He says in verse 5 of chapter 1, Look among the nations and see.
[3:50] Wonder and be astounded. For I am doing a work in your days. Habakkuk is asking God, directly addressing God.
[4:05] Why are you not doing something about the sin of Judah? About the prevalence of evil. The unchecked evil and sin that is breaking out here.
[4:21] He's saying, violence. I'm seeing violence and iniquity. Destruction, strife and contention. The law is paralysed.
[4:33] Justice never goes forth. The wicked surround the righteous. Justice goes forth. Justice never goes forth. Here we have Judah, the people of God.
[4:46] Who have abandoned the covenant and forsaken their God. And he sees all this evil breaking out all around him. And he's saying, Why God are you not doing something about this evil?
[5:00] There was complete chaos, moral, religious, social and political. And his problem, yes it was with the sin of Judah and man's actions.
[5:19] But first and foremost his questions were addressed to God and to God's inaction. He had a difficulty of reconciling the prevalence of evil with God's apparent indifference.
[5:39] We had the privilege on Friday night of hearing John Blanchard in this very building. Speaking about the relevance of the Bible today.
[5:51] Speaking about the Bible, the Word of God. And he does it so powerfully and so wonderfully. And when you look at the context of a prophet and a prophecy like this.
[6:09] You have to say, how relevant is this for our day? Much like our own day. It speaks to us about our day when there is so much chaos in the world.
[6:25] He knows there is a God. He knows and he believes. He's come to a saving knowledge of God. God all powerful, wise and holy and good.
[6:38] But he can't quite reconcile the issue of God's apparent indifference. Skeptics, of course, as you know, take the matter of the prevalence of evil and unchecked evil too far.
[7:02] In that they say, well, if God is good and right and upright, why isn't he doing something about sin and about all the terrible things that happen in the world?
[7:17] Of course, the problem with that kind of reasoning is just that it is, first and foremost, a fallen, sinful reasoning. We've lost all rights to question God about anything.
[7:35] That's where you must start. You've lost and I've lost in our sin. All rights to question God about anything that God does.
[7:47] We live in a fallen world and the fallenness and the corruption of sin has corrupted all our faculties and our reason. Charles Darwin wandered from God, not necessarily because of the theory of evolution and natural selection.
[8:10] That certainly didn't help him and he went too far, as you probably know. But Darwin's problem was this. There was a tragedy in his life and he lost a 10-year-old daughter.
[8:27] He lost a 10-year-old daughter and he could not reconcile this issue. How could a good and all-powerful God let this happen?
[8:42] How could a good and all-powerful God let this happen? But as I said, the reasoning is false. The Bible teaches us that it is of God's mercies that we are not consumed.
[8:59] You have no right and I have no right to say to God, why are you doing this or why are you not doing that? Of course, we do ask questions.
[9:12] There are some questions that are legitimate enough in terms of asking why God is doing something. And asking questions is not necessarily a sign of unbelief.
[9:24] Who isn't at times plagued with issues? When things happen, we all are. I'm not suggesting that for a moment. What I am suggesting is this, that the skeptic goes too far to try to disprove the existence of God.
[9:45] C.S. Lewis in Mere Christianity admits to being a skeptic. For a time in his life, he was a skeptic. All he could see was pain and cruelty and injustice.
[9:59] And he couldn't reconcile that with God. Until he started asking questions. Asking questions. And he came to a point where he said, How do I know what these things are?
[10:16] The pain and the cruelty and the injustice. How do I know what these things are apart from God? How do I know a crooked line? Unless I know a straight line.
[10:29] How can I speak of injustice without having a knowledge of what justice is? How can I speak of evil without knowing what goodness is?
[10:40] And where does that knowledge come from? He asks. And he asks this. Where and who drew the straight line?
[10:51] And the Lord used these questions. And that seeking. And the Holy Spirit drew him to the knowledge of the truth.
[11:03] And to faith in Christ. Does God hear? How does God answer Habakkuk's question?
[11:18] Well, he answers it in verses 5 to 11. God says to Habakkuk.
[11:47] Look, I am doing something. Even in your day. I am doing something. But you're not going to believe it. God was raising the Chaldeans.
[12:01] Or the Babylonians. It's one and the same. God was raising up the Chaldeans and the Babylonians. As a rod of judgment. To judge his people.
[12:15] To judge his people. And to execute his judgment. And to be his vehicle for judgment. Against the sin of Judah.
[12:28] And Habakkuk is more perplexed than ever. More perplexed than ever. Does God hear?
[12:41] Does God see? I can see the iniquity. Why can you not see it? Why are you idly standing by?
[12:54] And he comes to God. With his second complaint. Why do you idly look at traitors. And are silent. When the wicked swallows up.
[13:04] The man more righteous. Than he. He breaks out in a. In a theological discourse. He. He. He. He knows who God is.
[13:16] And he understands. That God is of pure eyes. Than to see evil. And cannot look at wrong. But why are you standing by? And why on earth? Why on earth?
[13:28] Are you raising up. The Chaldeans. Of all people. Of all people. People with whom. He had not established a covenant.
[13:38] A people who were his enemies. Using them to punish. His own. Covenant. People. A pagan. People.
[13:51] The Chaldeans. And he's saying. I know that. Judah is wicked. And evil. I can see it. But.
[14:02] These. Chaldeans. Are even more wicked. And even more. Evil. Evil. Even more. Cruel. And more. Violent. And he breaks out.
[14:14] In that second question. In the text that you see. From. From verse 12. Down to. Chapter 2. And verse 1.
[14:24] And he breaks out. In this. Narrative. Is he then to keep on. Emptying his net. And mercilessly. Killing. Nations.
[14:36] Forever. Forever. He. Is. Even more. Perplexed. In the light. Of God's answer.
[14:47] To his. First question. Than ever. And what does. Habakkuk.
[14:58] Do. Well he tells us. Chapter 2. And verse 1. I will take my stand. At my watch post. And station myself. On the tower.
[15:08] And look out to see. What he will say to me. And what I will answer. Concerning. My. Complaint. What did Habakkuk do?
[15:22] He drew near. To God. To await. God's. Reply. He drew near to God. To await.
[15:32] God's. Reply. Calvin says. That when our minds. Are agitated. With unbelief. When doubts. Respecting God's. Providence. Creep in.
[15:43] When things. Are so confused. In this world. As to involve us. In darkness. So that no light. Appears. We must. Thread.
[15:54] Our reason. Underfoot. And come. And draw. Near. To God. Himself. What you see.
[16:05] In. In. Habakkuk's. Responses. A submission. To the will. Of God. And to the sovereignty. Of God. There's a beautiful picture.
[16:18] Of that. In the life. Of the servant. Of God. Job. After all. That he suffered. What did he do? He fell down.
[16:28] And he worshipped. God. He worshipped. God. And God. Answers. Habakkuk. God answers.
[16:40] Habakkuk. The second time. And he says to Habakkuk. Write the vision. Make it plain. On tablets. So he may run.
[16:51] Who reads it. For still. The vision awaits. Its appointed. Time. It hastens to the end. It will not lie. If it seems slow. Wait for it. It will surely come.
[17:02] It will not. Delay. Behold. His soul. Is puffed up. It is not upright. Within him. But the righteous. Shall live. By his.
[17:14] Faith. Write. The vision. The Bible. Has a.
[17:25] Recurring theme. Of vision. Of vision. And provision. Of vision. And provision. Of writing down.
[17:35] What God wants us to hear. These words remind us. Do they not? Of the ten commandments. God said. Write them down.
[17:45] In tablets. I have got something to say. Something very plain. Something. Very. Serious. And time and time again. In the scriptures. You see.
[17:56] That. Vision. Being written down. And God. Going to. Say. Something. To say something. And he goes on to say.
[18:07] Spread it abroad. Spread it. Abroad. The reference. Seems to be. So he may run. Who reads it. Some of the commentators.
[18:18] Are of the view. That. It's a reference. To. To runners. Who would go about. With messages. To the four corners. Of the land. As it were. To spread. A particular.
[18:29] Message. The vision. Awaits. An appointed time. It will. Happen. And God.
[18:39] Goes on to tell him. That. Yes. In a sense. In. In part of the immediate. Context. God.
[18:50] Is saying to Habakkuk. I know. What I'm doing. And I can hear. And I can see. And I will judge. The Chaldeans. The Babylonians.
[19:03] But Habakkuk. I've got a. More serious. Matter. That I need. To teach you. To teach. You. And to teach us.
[19:15] Here tonight. In 2016. How are we to apply this. Then to ourselves. How are we to apply it.
[19:26] To ourselves. When we too. Are sometimes. Perplexed. And ask. Questions. What. Are we to make.
[19:37] Of. God. And is God. Not. Doing. Doing. Anything. Is God. Not doing. Anything. About. Anything. The Bible.
[19:52] The Bible. Teaches us. Something. And the New Testament. Teaches us. That. These very words. Of Habakkuk. Are quoted.
[20:03] In the New Testament. In Acts. Chapter. Thirteen. Acts. Chapter. Thirteen. And we read. At verse. Forty. Beware.
[20:16] Therefore. Lest what is said. In the prophets. Should come about. Look. You scoffers. Be astounded. And perish. For I am. Doing. A work.
[20:26] In your days. A work. That you will not. Believe. Even if one. Tells it. To you. He's quoting.
[20:38] Habakkuk. One. Five. And what is God. Doing. What is Paul. Saying here. That God. Is. Doing.
[20:49] Well. God is doing this. Verse. Twenty. Three. Of this man's. Offspring. That's David. God has brought. To Israel. A savior.
[21:00] Jesus. As he promised. That's. What God. Is. Doing. Verse. Twenty. Of Acts. Thirteen. We read.
[21:10] This. And though. They found. In him. No guilt. Worthy. Of death. They asked. Pilate. To have him. Executed. And when. They had. Carried out. All that was.
[21:21] Written of him. They took him. Down. From the tree. And laid him. In. A tomb. And verse. Thirty. Eight. Again.
[21:32] Reminded. Of this. Let it be known. To you. Therefore. Brothers. That through. This man. Jesus. Forgiveness. Of sins. Is proclaimed.
[21:43] To you. And by him. Everyone. Who believes. Is freed. From everything. From which you could not.
[21:54] Be freed. By the law. Of Moses. Beware. Therefore. God. Lest. What is said.
[22:04] In the prophets. Should. Come. About. God. Is. Doing. Something. God.
[22:14] Did. Something. Here. God. Was. Doing. Something. In. Habakkuk's. Day. And he. Was. Saying. To. Habakkuk. Habakkuk. Have you. Forgotten. Have you. Forgotten.
[22:25] All the things. That I have. Done. Have you. Forgotten. The promises. Of a saviour. Of a messiah. The vision.
[22:36] Is still. To be fulfilled. Habakkuk. And it will. Be fulfilled. Wait for it. It will not. Delay. It cannot. Lie. I am.
[22:48] Doing. Something. I have. Sent. A saviour. To deal. With the very. Problem. That was. Breaking out. In judah. A problem.
[22:58] That broke out. In the garden. Of Eden. My problem. And your problem. As we are. By nature. And that problem. Is sin. Sin.
[23:10] And Jesus. Himself. Says. I am. Doing. Something. Too. What are you. Doing. I am. Building. My church. I am. Building. My church.
[23:20] And the gates. Of hell. Will not. Prevail. Against my church. No. The gates. Of the Chaldeans. Or the Babylonians. Or the Persians. Or the Romans. Or the skeptics.
[23:32] Or the atheists. Or the philosophers. Nothing. Will prevail. Against. The church. Of the Lord. Jesus Christ.
[23:43] And he's saying to them. Beware. Beware. He's saying to you. Tonight. Beware. Don't reject.
[23:54] The gospel. Of Jesus Christ. Just because you think. Nothing's happening. Nothing's going on. The church. Is so powerless. Where was God. When that happened. And this happened.
[24:07] He's teaching. Habakkuk. Believe. Believe. In the Lord. Jesus Christ. The second thing. That we have to learn.
[24:18] Is this. God is in control. God is in control. Habakkuk understood. And knew who God. Was.
[24:29] That God. In his answer. To Habakkuk. In his answer. To Habakkuk. Second question. Says. In chapter 2. And verse 20. God.
[24:40] Is in. His. Holy. Temple. But the Lord. Is in his. Holy. Temple. Let all. The earth. Keep silence. Before him. Now.
[24:53] We may not. Have all the answers. To all the painful. Things that arise. In our providence. You may not. Have all the answers. There are things.
[25:04] That are mysterious. There are. Sufferings. And there are things. Going on. That are mysterious. But what I was saying.
[25:14] To them in the morning. I had the privilege. Of being in the APC church. And quoting. A comment. That I read. Many years ago. Which I. Embraced. The Bible.
[25:25] Does not tell us. Everything we want. To know. But it does. Tell us. Everything. We need. To know. It does.
[25:36] Tell us. Everything. We need. To know. It tells you. Everything. You need. To know. And he's saying. To Habakkuk. You need. To know. This. Habakkuk. Believe. In me.
[25:46] Have faith. I am. God. Have faith. In me. And live. Exercise. Your. Faith. Exercise.
[25:58] Your faith. God. Is. On. His. Throne. Oh. The. Existence. Of. Evil. Does not. Eliminate.
