[0:00] Let's turn for a little to John chapter 16 and reading at verse 8, John 16 verse 8.
[0:14] And when he comes, that is the Holy Spirit, when he comes he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment.
[0:27] When he comes he will convict the world of sin and righteousness and judgment. Now as we know partings are never easy and the Lord Jesus had been preparing his disciples for his leaving them for his departure.
[0:48] And although they weren't grasping, although he had been telling them for quite a while that he was going to be going, they never really understood it and as he's now homing in much more distinctly and clearly on it, things are beginning to dawn upon them.
[1:05] Now as we said partings are never easy and often when we're going to part from people, and maybe it's for quite a long time, we often find it hard to know just what is the right thing to say.
[1:19] But that was never so with Jesus because he has all the right words and he has all the right themes as he works his way through these chapters really that we have here of his message to his disciples and also a message to us.
[1:37] And there were two things that Jesus emphasized here with regard to his going away. And the first was that he was emphasizing to them that he was never here for a long time.
[1:51] It was never his intention to come into this world and live out into an old age. Because a lot of people as they look at the life of Jesus, they say, well, it was really short, 33 years.
[2:04] It was a very, he had a very short life. But Jesus came with the one purpose of a mission. Jesus was on a mission. A mission to fulfill everything that the Father gave him to do.
[2:17] He had a timetable and he did everything that the Father gave him to do. And when he was in the very prime, he was then taken. It was, there was an appointed time. It was an appointed time for you and for me to leave this world.
[2:30] But there was an appointed time for Jesus to fulfill the work that the Father gave him to do with regard to his sacrifice and to his death. So Jesus was aware that he was only here for a short time.
[2:44] The other thing that he's emphasizing to the disciples is the necessity of his going away. Because in his going away, his going away was going to bring the Holy Spirit.
[2:58] The Holy Spirit was going to come in power. He says in verse 7, Nevertheless, I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away. For if I do not go away, the helper will not come to you.
[3:10] But if I go, I will send him to you. So that is kind of almost like the kind of deal that the Lord Jesus Christ is making. This heavenly deal that his departure means that he will send the Holy Spirit.
[3:24] Now some people think that, or some people say, does that mean that the Holy Spirit was never here in this world before? That the ministry of the Holy Spirit was not known or experienced before the Holy Spirit comes in power at the time of Pentecost?
[3:44] Now we know, of course, that's not true. That the Holy Spirit has been involved in everything that has taken place in this world. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit were involved in the creation of this world.
[3:57] Father, Son, and Holy Spirit have been involved in everything. There are three distinct persons in the Godhead. We know Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Yet they have different, there are different purpose, different functions, different aspects of their work that is highlighted.
[4:13] But the Holy Spirit always, always ministered in the hearts and in the lives of God's people. No different for Abraham to the likes of you and me.
[4:27] The only difference was this. That Abraham, and when I pick up Abraham, it's the same for Moses or David or any of the Old Testament believers.
[4:38] The Old Testament believers were saved in the very same way as you and I are saved. But they were saved in believing and accepting and trusting in the Messiah and the Christ who was to come.
[4:52] Who was foreshadowed in all the sacrifices, all the ways, the system that God had set out. This highlighted what Jesus Christ was going to do.
[5:04] That's why it says of Abraham, Jesus said, Abraham saw my day and rejoiced. So way, way back, Abraham saw, he believed, he saw, he accepted God's provision, that God was providing this way of salvation through the promise.
[5:25] And so, it was great faith. And they were saved by faith. But it was the Holy Spirit who gave them to see, to believe, to understand, who enabled them to accept.
[5:38] So, it was by faith, by grace, you are saved through faith. That's how it was for the Old Testament believers. And it's the same for us. We now believe and accept in the Christ who has come.
[5:51] They looked forward, we look back to what Jesus has done. But it's the one Savior, and the one way of salvation. So, the Holy Spirit was always working.
[6:03] And it was always at work, right from the very beginning. But what Jesus is talking about here is, that the Holy Spirit's influence, and impact, was going to become much greater in this world.
[6:18] The Holy Spirit was going to come in power. And his influence was going to be, greater than it had been before. And the Holy Spirit's work was going to, move throughout all the nations of this world.
[6:32] And that is what we're seeing to this very day. That although, the Christian influence might be, waning, in many ways in our country.
[6:43] Thankfully, the Lord has not removed his candlestick from us. And we pray that he never will. But, we know that in many places of this world, there are now many believers, where there hadn't been before.
[6:57] Like I said that in the prayer, the, the, one of the, men who comes here, Adam, and he has worked in Afghanistan.
[7:10] And, he was saying that, that years back, you would struggle to find a believer. Now, there are hundreds, if not thousands, of believers.
[7:22] Of course, they cannot meet, and they cannot operate, and when the openness that we do, as they live under the threat of, the Taliban all the time. But it shows how God's work, is going globally.
[7:35] And the Holy Spirit's ministry, is ministering, in all areas of this world. In North Korea, there are believers there. In, in the most horrific, the, the, the, the pressure, to have a Bible, to confess Christ, to try and, evangelize, and some of these nations, you're putting your very life at risk.
[7:56] So, but the, the fact is, that the Holy Spirit, is ministering, in great power, right, throughout this world. Now, we know that the, the Holy Spirit, has given different titles, given different names, within the Word of God.
[8:16] But the, overriding idea, that we have, with regard to the Holy Spirit, is one, who comes alongside. That is the greatest translation, that you can really have.
[8:27] When you take, the way the Holy Spirit, comes, in, to us, it's as one, who comes alongside. And he is translated, in different ways.
[8:38] Sometimes as a helper, sometimes as, the counselor, sometimes as, the comforter. There are different descriptions. And how wonderful that is.
[8:50] Just you think of the comforter. And how many times, we have gone through experiences. And God has, really comforted us. There have been times, maybe in your life, where you've, you've said to yourself, I don't know how I came through that.
[9:05] I can't get over the way, that I was upheld. I cannot get over the way, that I was carried. And as it were, lifted up. This was the Holy Spirit's, ministry to you.
[9:16] Where he, came alongside. And he comforted you. And the wonderful thing is, that when God, talks of comforting his people, that actual word, involves a strengthening.
[9:30] So that God's comfort, brings strength. And, I'm sure you've often, reflected back over your life, and how, going through a situation, that you felt was, you were so weak, that you couldn't get over, the strength.
[9:46] Yeah, I've often heard people, say that in the face of bereavement. I can't get over, how strong I am. They thought that they would be broken, and they are broken. But they've been given this strength.
[9:58] And that's from the Lord. Because this is, this is, the fulfillment of the spirits, coming alongside, and comforting. And the actual language of God's comfort, means, he strengthens in that comfort.
[10:12] Sometimes when we try and, comfort people, we do the very opposite. And we sometimes weaken them, with the best intentions in the world. We sometimes, our comfort isn't that great, but, the Lord's comforting, is strengthening.
[10:27] And so this is the Holy Spirit. He's at work, comforting. He's our counselor. He guides us. He teaches us. He leads us in the way to go. He prompts us. How often that's happened.
[10:40] We've been prompted, to go and see someone, or do something. Or pray for somebody. These things have just, they've just come, from, like I said, from nowhere.
[10:53] And we should, we should be receptive, to this. Because the Holy Spirit, this is how he works, within his people. And he again, applies, his word, to us.
[11:03] How often, a verse of scripture, has come to us. And it's, it's, it's come with, with meaning, with reality, with power. And I often think, that those who, who live without, the Lord Jesus Christ, just how much, they're missing, out of their lives.
[11:20] Even people who, may be a regular, church attenders, but they, they've never come, to an actual, living faith, in the Lord Jesus Christ. There's, how much, how much a person, loses out, in their life.
[11:31] Not having this ministry, not having, this, this, strengthening, this support, this guidance, and so on. Now, as we, talk about the, the spirit, and we mentioned, that there are three persons, in the Godhead.
[11:45] Very often, when we talk about God, there's God, the Father, God, the Son, and God, the Holy Spirit. When we talk about God, we often, don't automatically, our minds, don't often go, to the third person, of the Godhead.
[11:59] This is part, almost of the mystery, of the Godhead. Of how, the spirit, is, is almost like, the hidden part, of the, the Godhead. Very often, when we think of God, we may think of, the Almighty God, God, the Father, the, the, the sovereign God, the God of might, and power, and majesty, and glory.
[12:18] Or when we think of God, we think of the second person, of the Godhead, the Son of God. We think of the, of the Lord Jesus Christ, the one who came in our nature, and made sacrifice, for sin, who died, and rose again, and has now, seated, the right hand, and majesty, and glory.
[12:37] Very often, our minds, don't automatically, go to the third person, of the Godhead, this Holy Spirit. But he is God, a very God, in all the power, and all the glory, of Father, and of Son.
[12:51] And anyway, here, Jesus is telling the disciples, I tell you the truth. And, when Jesus says this, and we know that every word, of Christ is true, but Jesus is here, making this great promise, that when he goes away, he is going to send, the third person, of the Godhead, in, to, his place, as it were.
[13:13] That he's been here, but now he's going away, but now, he will send the third person. And when Jesus, ever makes a promise, we always know, that every promise he makes, will be, absolutely fulfilled.
[13:25] We've said it often enough, before, you and I make promises, and we don't fulfill them. Sometimes, it's because we forget. It's very easy to forget. You say to someone, well, I'll see you here, or I'll see you there, or I'll be here, or be there.
[13:39] You forget all about it, and maybe weeks later, you think, oh no, I forgot. Or sometimes, we say to someone, we're going to do this, we're going to do that, but circumstances overtake, and our circumstances change, and we can't do, what we planned to do, or thought we were going to do.
[13:57] But here is the Lord Jesus, and he's saying, the Holy Spirit is going to come, and he's going to convict the world. He's going to convict the world, he's going to convict them.
[14:11] We see that there are three things, that the Holy Spirit is going to do. He's going to convict, regarding sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment. Now, there are different levels, in which the Holy Spirit convicts, and we see here, that he's convicting people, or convincing people, of the reality, of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment.
[14:40] So, this is where he begins, the convicting of sin. And the Holy Spirit, begins to reveal to us, something of who we really are.
[14:51] And you and I know, that that can sometimes be, one of the most devastating things, that can happen in our lives. Because, naturally, here we are, in our natural situation.
[15:06] Natural man, natural woman. And, as a normal, law-abiding citizen, if you went round, the town of Stornoway, and you ask people, you say to yourself, how do you consider yourself, what kind of person, do you consider yourself to be?
[15:21] I don't believe, that any person, would have the audacity, to say, you know, I am as good, and as perfect, as I believe it is possible to be. I don't think anybody, would make such a boast.
[15:34] But I think, the vast, vast, vast majority of people, would say, look I'm not perfect, don't hold up my hand, to be perfect in any way. But I'm a decent, law-abiding citizen.
[15:45] I'm a decent person. I'm a decent neighbor. I'm a decent work colleague. I'm a decent family man, or family woman. By and large, I'm a decent person.
[15:57] And I think that's how most people, would look on themselves. But you know, when the Holy Spirit, comes to convict us, of who we really are, that idea, that picture, of we have of ourselves, is shattered, into a thousand pieces.
[16:17] There's just this, fearful realization, of just who we are. God gives us, a little glimpse, only a little glimpse, of what we're like, in a sight.
[16:32] And that is one of the most, traumatic discoveries, that a person can make. Where we come to see, that from, the crown of our head, to the sole of our feet, that there is nothing about us, that's righteous.
[16:45] The Bible makes that declaration. There is none righteous, no, not one. You can go all around the globe, and you won't find, one, righteous person, standing, in the sight of God.
[17:00] And that's quite, an extraordinary statement. And so, the Holy Spirit, cuts into our heart, into our life, convicting us, of sin.
[17:12] And that, exposure, of who we are, before God, as we say, it's an awful discovery, where we see something, of the twistedness, of our nature.
[17:24] Something of the perversion, of the crookedness, of the enmity, of the inbuilt rebellion, against God. All these things, that are against God. That's how we are, by nature.
[17:36] And that is why, it's so urgent, that people will find, the Lord Jesus Christ. That is why, it is so important, for the Holy Spirit, to convict, the world.
[17:47] Because you and I, cannot convict ourselves, without the Spirit's ministry. You and I, cannot convict other people, without the Holy Spirit. I mean, there's no point, in you and me, telling people, somebody else, and you, you know, if you went to, down the street just now, went down Francis Street, or along Cromwell Street, and started saying to people, you know this, you really are corrupt, you are such a perverse individual, you probably get hit.
[18:14] People say, how dare you? So, we cannot, by ourselves, do that, but the Holy Spirit can. And that's what the Holy Spirit does.
[18:26] He shows us, gives us a glimpse, of what we are, in the sight of God. And as I said, it's a very, very painful, and a sore discovery, to see these things.
[18:39] And, again, we've got to remember, that, this is the Holy Spirit, who is engaged, in this ministry. Now, again, we might find this, a wee bit, strange, because whenever we think, of the Holy Spirit, we think of somebody, who is tender.
[18:56] This is a picture, that we have. The spirit of, like pouring in oil, or of water, or gentle as a dove. We tend to think, of the gentleness, of how easily, the spirit is grieved.
[19:11] And so we think, of the gentleness, of the Holy Spirit. Yes, we know of Jesus, his gentleness, but we're also told, that we're told, in scripture, that the day will come, when Jesus, as a lamb of God, today we see him, as a lamb, who has been slain.
[19:31] We see Jesus, as a lamb, who is offering himself, to sinners. But there's going to come, a day when the world, will see the wrath, of the lamb. And that's why, it says in Psalm 2, kiss ye the son, lest in his wrath.
[19:47] But we tend not, to think, with regard to, of wrath, towards the Holy Spirit. But that's exactly, what the Holy Spirit, is doing, revealing to us, our sin, and revealing to us, the wrath, of God, against sin.
[20:03] And that is why, it is so important, that the gospel, is preached. And not just the gospel, but the law, is preached. Because people will say, no need to preach the law, just preach Christ.
[20:18] Well, we need to preach both. Because you see, it's important that people, if you're going to preach salvation, what does salvation mean? Salvation means, being delivered, from something.
[20:30] So unless people know, that they need to be delivered, that they need to be saved, then they're not going to look, for a saviour. Why do I need a saviour?
[20:43] You need to be saved. Saved from what? Saved from the wrath of God, against sin. So unless people, come to understand this, they're not going to look, for a saviour.
[20:54] So that is why, it is so important, that people are told. The Bible itself says, that one of the worst things, that you can say is, peace, peace, when there is no peace.
[21:07] It is no kindness, to anybody, to tell them, that all is well. People will say, when I come to church, all I want to hear, is a nice, soothing message. Well, let us be thankful, that so much, that is in the word, is soothing, it is encouraging, it builds people up, it is, we're so thankful, to the Lord, that he has put it there.
[21:30] But the Bible also, warns us to flee, from the wrath to come. And Jesus Christ himself, when he was here, in this world, there was nobody, more gentle, and more gracious, than the Lord Jesus Christ.
[21:45] And yet Jesus, frequently, spoke to people, about hell, spoke to people, about the danger, of dying, without him, of the awfulness, of hell, all these things, Jesus spoke frequently, about it.
[22:01] And so, that is why, in order that, we are faithful, to what the word of God says, we have to, we have to tell people. And this is where we pray, that the Holy Spirit, will come, and convict.
[22:13] And I, if there is anybody, here today, who has never, come to, know Jesus as Savior, please, please, please, ask the Lord, to show you, yourself, in such a way, in such a way, and this leads us, on to the second part, move through this, very, very quickly, it moves, to the righteousness, of Jesus.
[22:37] Jesus lived, in this world, a righteous life, every day, every step, every breath, every word, was righteous. But he is now, departing.
[22:49] So the role, of the Holy Spirit, now, that Jesus has gone, is to continue, to display, into people's hearts, into people's lives, the reality, the reality, of this righteousness.
[23:04] So on the one hand, people need to come, to know, what it is, to be a sinner, and they need to know, how to be saved. You see, it's possible, you might be here today, and you say to yourself, you know, I believe all this.
[23:20] You see, it's possible, to have a head knowledge, of the, all the truth, and to know, and to believe, and say, you know, I know that. With my mind, I believe everything, that you're saying.
[23:31] I believe we are sinners, in the sight of God. I believe, that without Jesus Christ, as Savior, people will be lost. People can know, and accept, and say, yeah, I agree with all that, and yet they don't, really know, it's not going into their heart, it's not become, part of them.
[23:51] There's a huge difference, between knowing about something, and feeling something. To know it, and to feel it. To know that there's such a thing, as conviction of sin, and to feel conviction of sin, are two totally different things.
[24:08] I remember, when we lived in Muir of Ford, there was quite a big back garden, and there was a wall, and outside, there was just this kind of, this was the back of the house, this kind of, nothing short of a wilderness, it was a no man's land, and there were just, it was, I remember at certain times, he used to be full of nettles, and Norman was always playing with that ball, and he was just a wee boy, and this day, he was playing around, and I, there was a gate out into the back there, back part, and I would say to him, right, see if your ball goes over the wall, come and tell me, do not go in there, because see these nettles, they are so stinging, and they, you will be so sore, and he was saying, yeah, yeah, oh, I, oh, not, I won't go, I won't go, that was fine, wee while later, I heard the howls, and of course, the ball had gone over, he'd opened the gate, and he'd run into the nettles, just in his shorts, and t-shirts, the nettles were up to here, and he was stung all over, and I was thinking to myself, I thought he had understood, because I told him,
[25:11] I'd explained it, and I tried to do it in child language, so that he would understand, and I was quite satisfied, he understood, but he hadn't, he thought he had, but he went into it, and then he felt it, and that was a whole new ball game altogether, and that's how it is often, with regard to the lack of conviction of sin, you can know about it, accept it, and believe it, say it, and say, yeah, I know, but you know, when the Lord will convict you, you will then know, what it is, to be a sinner before the Lord, and what it is, to need this righteousness, righteousness, so we have here, it says, when he comes, he will convict the world, concerning sin, and righteousness, and I believe, on the one hand, it's following on, from the conviction of sin, showing that there is none righteous, no, not one, but the spirit will convince us, of all that Jesus said, all the scriptural truth, of who Jesus is, the Holy Spirit will convince us, that Jesus Christ, is the righteous one, but it is more than, convict and convince us, that Jesus is righteous, the Holy Spirit works personally, within us, and again, we're coming back, just as I used that illustration of Norman, this is the important thing, again, you can know, and accept, that Jesus Christ is righteous, and you can know, and accept, that Jesus as a righteous one, died for sinners, and that Jesus as a righteous one, is offering himself to you, in order that, you will become righteous, in God's sight, but unless you, make it more than head knowledge, unless you come to believe it, in your heart, to accept it, that truth you know, is not ultimately, going to benefit you, and that's where you need, the Holy Spirit to say,
[27:12] Lord, I know all this is true, please enable me, to come to, lay hold, upon this truth personally, so that it will become, part and partial, of my life, and you know, this is a wonderful transaction, that's taken place, is that, Jesus, and he's the only one, who could do this, because Jesus, is God, a very God, absolutely, gloriously, perfect, and righteous, in all his being, but he's also man, and Jesus, came to stand, in our place, and fulfill, the law, in our place, and to die, on the cross, taking, while he was doing that, he was bearing, the wrath, of God, for sin, where God, was dealing, with our sin, there was a, a transaction, taking place, on these hours, on the cross, where Jesus, was the living, and becoming, the dying sacrifice, for sin,
[28:20] God, was laying, upon him, everything, that our sin, desired, and so, for the believer, to accept, what Jesus has done, God, says over that person, righteous, because he's looking, at us now, clothed, with, the garment, of what we term, the robe of righteousness, he's looking, at us, through the righteousness, of Jesus, and, with regard, to our legal standing, which is quite extraordinary, we are, as righteous, as Jesus, because we're standing, in his righteousness, not in our own, and there will come, a day, when not only, will we be standing, with regard, to our legal standing, but there will come, a day in glory, when we will shine, in our whole being, with his righteousness, where we will reflect, we will be reflecting, who he is, it's extraordinary, we shall see him, as he is, and we shall be like him, and so, the Holy Spirit, is convincing us, and convicting us, of this as well, and then finally, just now word, and also of judgment, now, while the Holy Spirit, also convinces us, and convicts us, that there is a coming judgment, but I don't think, that's exactly, what it means here, but there is, we all know, there's a judgment coming,
[29:48] Bible makes that very clear, there is a time, there is a place, there is a judge, there are all these things, and you and I, and all created humanity, will have to appear, before the judgment seat, of Christ, and give an account, of all that we have done here, in the body, good or bad, Bible tells us that, but I think, the context, makes it very clear, that the judgment here, is concerning, the ruler of this world, that's what it says, in verse 11, concerning judgment, because the ruler, of this world, is judged, what an encouraging, statement that is, who is the ruler, of this world, who is the God, of this world, well we all know, that's Satan, he has been termed, that in scripture, and we know, that he has caused, utter havoc, over the centuries, he has, he has, held the world, in the grip of darkness, but on the cross, it tells us in Colossians, that Jesus Christ, spoiled, principalities, and powers, when you go through, the letter, the writings, of the apostles, you will see, part of the great work, that took place, on the cross, was a fulfillment, of the promise, made in Eden, on the cross,
[31:11] Christ's, heel, was bruised, but on the cross, Satan's head, remember there was, the promise, Satan's head, was going to be, bruised and crushed, and that's what Jesus did, Jesus broke, the power of darkness, now Satan knows, his time is short, he knows, that he is, he has been judged, and he knows, that there's going to come, a final judgment, for him, and his final judgment, is going to be, beyond description, where he will be, in the very depths, of hell, but in the moment, he still has, freedom, in this world, his time is short, and he knows it, and he's angry, and he's waging war, against the church, and we see it, in so many different ways, and I believe, as time goes on, and as time becomes, shorter and shorter, that his anger, and hatred, against the church, will become, ever greater, but one day, it's going to be over, and he knows it, because he has, already been beaten, he is, he is, you know, if you, sometimes,
[32:23] Ravos comes into the house, or something, and you give it a bang, try and, try and kill it, but you don't, it just, you just make it angry, it becomes, it becomes angrier, and, you go after it, eventually, to get it, but in that period, where you've got an angry wasp, or a couple of angry wasp, they're worse, than if you hadn't done anything, to them at all, and to a certain extent, it's almost like that, with Satan, he knows, that the crushing, has come upon him, and his time is short, and that is why, he's waging war, against the church, but the wonderful thing is, that he is a defeated foe, Christ, alone, is victorious, and all his people, in Christ, will be victorious, if you today, are without Christ, please, please, please, do not leave it there, ask Jesus, to become, and you know something, there's nothing he loves more, than saving people, that's why he came into the world, he came to seek, and to save, those who are lost, if you're without Christ, today, you're lost, but you don't need, to remain lost, because Jesus said, it's for you,
[33:38] I've come, that's why I came, to seek out, and you know, what he seeks out, his people most, is in his house, because that's part, of what he's drawn, he's drawn them there, and he does his work, and it's not the only place, he does his work, but it's the place, he most does his work, and you are in his house today, you ask him, while you're here, Lord, I'm lost, admit it, you know, it's sometimes hard to do, but we've got to swallow our pride, and say, Lord, be merciful to me, a sinner, please, save me, let us pray, oh Lord, our God, we pray, that, we might be enabled, to understand, and appreciate, more and more, of the great ministry, that goes on within us, we so often take, being a Christian, for granted, help us to remember, that Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, were involved, in our salvation, each one of us, personal, individual, we give thanks Lord, for the, the eyes, that never stopped, searching for us, the heart, that never stopped, loving us, the arms, that reached out, to draw us in, and we pray today, that every one of us, will know the safety, and security, in Jesus, take us to our home, safely we pray, do us good, and forgive us our sin, in Jesus name,
