[0:00] bibles if you would and turn with me to psalm chapter 64 of the 64th psalm do you ever feel like people are talking about you you ever feel like people are gossiping about you and people are saying stuff about you that is harmful to your character that's what david's feeling like two lessons i think for us today in this passage of scripture number one lesson is control my tongue which we're going to find out from the scripture is pretty hard to do but to control our tongue to get gossip under control the second thing is to deal with that feeling you get whether it's from somebody talking about you or the devil talking in your head and how do you deal with all of that that's going on and the answer is going to be that god's going to come forth in massive ways at the end of this story at the end of this psalm god's going to come forth and take care of those that are attacking david and we don't know when this psalm was written like so many of them sometimes they give us a real clear picture this could have been written while he's working for saul in the uh palace and while he was in the palace and they were working there together maybe it's when all the people that worked with saul and all of the soldiers and saul is saying i want to kill him and y'all got to dig up some stuff and we need a good reason to kill him and words getting around or it could have been even when he was in gath and he was in the cell and people walking around outside talking about him how they hated him and how they're going to kill him or it could have been when he is on the run from absalom and absalom stirring up everything and he's got counselors against him and everybody's talking we don't know but here's the whole deal david is under massive persecution in his heart he feels like everybody is against him look if you would in verse 2 and just underline they're having secret counsels of the wicked look at that verse 2 psalm 64 2 they're having secret counsels of the wicked i think it's really funny when you skip down to verse 3 maybe you'd underline who wet their tongue like a sword now i don't know if we even know what that means but some of you older folks are how many of you carry a pocket knife does anybody carry a pocket knife hold your hand up have you ever sharpened your pocket knife you know you got that wet stone and you spit on it you might know about that uh dan you probably use oil dan probably like i ain't gonna spit on nothing and so but anyway you know you you you sharpen that up and the words he uses here is they've been getting together and they're sharpening their tongue like a man sharpens his sword before he goes into battle look at the verse who wet their tongue like a sword and bend their arrows bend their bows to shoot their arrows david said man they get together and they're i mean together they're all figuring out how can we cut him down more than normal and then they shoot their arrows they're not really arrows they're bitter words maybe they're talking to saul and spreading more junk on david or maybe they're talking to somebody else and they're spreading more junk but they are doing everything they can to hurt him i think verse five is an interesting verse look at verse five they get together and they say man that was a good jab you gave him you stabbed him really good but i got next week i'm working on this and i'm going to figure it out i when i read this psalm to be honest with you and that nothing to do with election but you know you can only imagine both camps both politicians sitting around figuring out how can we get together and stab the other guy and so i mean

[4:03] when i read this time i'm like lord that's a funny psalm for right before an election but anyway they they they encourage whoa let's see what we can do this week let's bring old david down let's chop him down and then they lay snares they figure out how they can do stuff that'll trip david up and get david to say or do something that he shouldn't shouldn't so they can mess with him look at verse six it's just introduction stuff but look at verse six they search out iniquities they do a diligent search do you understand what you're doing they're going to say what do you know about david give me give me get some dirt on david i need some dirt some dirt give me some dirt well hey you give me some dirt come on give me some dirt let's hey everybody run around find all the dirt you can find i mean get on the internet i mean go talk to his wife and his mama and his mom-in-law you go talk to everybody you can let's let's get all the junk together we can and they're just all they think about is how they can bring david down verse seven but god david's pretty messed up at the beginning of the psalm which he often is when he does when he does with these psalms he likes to start kind of low and crescendo all the way up to where he goes but god came through and god took care of me so it's kind of like the way david likes to sing a song like when they get to church david's i mean you if you can imagine singing with them and david's like they were after us they were killing us everything's going really bad my life was in the pits but god came through i'm going to go on a rock scene next week and he says when god came through god made their own tongue fall on them in verse nine everybody started talking about how god moved david didn't take care of himself god did and they wisely considered and they trusted god i want to show you one more thing before we get into the outline or the message of what i'd like to say to you today most of us don't have secret councils going on about us i don't know if anybody in this room does but you do we wrestle not against flesh and blood but against principalities and powers spiritual darkness and high places and you can mark this down the devil and his cronies hate you and they're over there and they're looking for every little thing they can do to bring you down they want to cause you to fall into sin they want to discourage you they want to get you out of loving jesus and serving jesus and worshiping jesus they want to destroy your marriage it's not that they're that much against marriage they're just against jesus and if they can make jesus people unhappy people and destroy jesus people's lives they'll feel pretty good about that so over there plotting and saying what can we say this is one of my little things here it's kind of like a side note for you but i kind of believe sometimes we just let the devil know what weapons he can use he doesn't really have to do all that secret counseling deep search because we're like always broadcasting what discourages us and instead of being people that praise we're people that complain and so when you complain and you talk about how bad things are then the devil says that's a good arrow get that one ready let's sharpen that complaint up and we'll stab him we already know he don't like it we already he told us he don't like it so i mean it's like you league up with the devil so the devil can hurt you but when you praise and praise god

[8:05] the devil loses some of that ability to do that with you go with me if you would back to verse one i just want you to know this morning i think we're under attack i think we're under attack i think the church of god is under attack i think
