Passage

Description

Have you ever considered serving the Lord in some form of Christian work? It is something that we really should take seriously. Look at the passage in the Gospel from which the above text is found.

Crowds of people were gathering to hear Jesus' teaching. As Jesus looked on them, he had compassion on them because they were 'harassed and helpless like sheep without a shepherd' (verse 36). Why were they in such a state? The main reason was I think because the religious leaders at that time were not really teaching the people the whole truth about God. The people needed to hear the gospel of the kingdom — God's way of salvation.

Jesus said to his disciples that they should pray that God would send out people to take the message of salvation to the people. It was as if a harvest was ready to be reaped but there were no harvesters to do the work. But then look what happened. As Jesus urged his followers to pray for harvesters, he appointed these very people to go and be the harvesters — to preach his gospel and to go with his authority (Matthew 10:1).

So could God be challenging you to consider going out to serve him — not necessarily far away, but where he wants you to be and whatever he wants you to do?

Prayer

Dear Lord, "Take my life, and let it be all you purpose, Lord, for me" Amen. (F. R. Havergal)
