How would you react if you heard that the Queen was coming to tea at your house? Maybe your first thought might be 'what will I wear?' Or more importantly 'what will we give her to eat?' One thing is certain, there would be preparations made — cleaning and dusting and a sense of nervous anticipation! But what if God was coming to tea? How would we get on with Him?
Well, look what God said to Judah a long time ago. He told them he was going to come and be in their company. The people were going through a hard time, they had powerful enemies, they were worried about their future, and there was an air of depression hanging over them.
Then God said he was coming to be among them. What difference would that make? First of all, God reminds them that he is strong — a mighty warrior. Yes they had powerful enemies but these were no match for God. Then God tells the people he is going to bring happiness with him; he is going to rejoice with the people, he is going to set them singing, and God is going to calm them in the warmth of his love for them. God in the company was going to make a really good difference.
And of course that is still true. Jesus said "I came so that they (you!) can have real and eternal life, more and better than they (you!) ever dreamed of." (John 10:10)
Dear Lord, help me to welcome you into my company. Amen.
