Passage

Description

Today we had to go to the bank. The staff were very helpful and our business did not take very long. I was wondering how the staff might feel if they were advising people about money — maybe telling them about savings or investments. People become very possessive about their money! On another occasion, I saw that there were big chains attached to the cash machines — people do break into banks and try to steal even these very heavy cash machines.

Of course there were no cash machines when Jesus was on earth, but he knew that people could be very attached to their money in his day just as people are now. So Jesus warns us about this. The really important 'treasures' are not those you can keep in a bank, but treasures of wisdom and knowledge which we find in Jesus Christ (Colossians 2:3). These treasures contain within them the 'pearl of great price' (Matthew 13:46), which is finding Jesus as our Saviour and the 'real gold and silver' of the precious blood of Christ (1 Peter 1:18 - 19).

When the Apostle Paul was nearing the end of his life, he was able to say (using 'banking' language) "I am convinced that he (Jesus) is able to guard what I have entrusted (my deposit) to him for that day." (2 Timothy 1:12, NIV). By 'that day', Paul means the last judgement.

Prayer

Dear Lord, I pray that I will always treasure you in my heart and know, with Paul, you will keep me always. Amen.
